See the arts through expert eyes

Thames & Hudson is relaunching its signature World of Art series with the publication in 2020 of 20 titles on art, architecture, design, photography and fashion.

Landmarks in the World of Art

1958 The World of Art series is born.

1959 In 1958, Thames & Hudson launched its longest-running series, the World of Art. Affordable and pitched at a nonspecialist audience, the series brought art books to the masses. As the series developed, it produced pioneering titles on global art, women’s art and art movements beyond the Western mainstream. Over 60 years later, more than 300 titles have been published. The World of Art remains at the forefront of high quality art publishing. The relaunched series: • includes never-before-published books along with classic volumes in updated editions • carries a contemporary new cover design • features an easy-to-navigate and highly readable page layout See the arts through expert eyes with the World of Art, which stands at the vanguard of art scholarship and remains a bedrock of knowledge for students and lovers of art and culture everywhere.

‘The single most influential series of art books ever published’ Apollo

Herbert Read’s A Concise History of Modern Painting is published and becomes a foundational text for art students everywhere.

1964 The Sunday Times says of Michael Levey’s From Giotto to Cézanne, which will become one of the World of Art’s top-selling titles, that ‘no better introduction to Western painting has ever been produced’.

1965 Hans Richter, co-founder of Dada, publishes Dada: Art and Anti-Art, his first-hand account of the movement; it is subsequently quoted by David Bowie in his lyrics for Scary Monsters.

1979 Performance Art by RoseLee Goldberg ‘charts new territory’ according to Robert Rosenblum, and is hailed as ‘a bible’ by DJ Spooky.

1990 Whitney Chadwick’s Women, Art, and Society is ‘packed with information, controversy, argument and very good art’ (TES). As always, the World of Art is at the vanguard.

1997 Richard J. Powell’s ‘breakthrough work‘ Black Art and Culture in the 20th Century is the first book to survey the artworks of the African diaspora.

2001 The new millennium sees the World of Art take on a new look.

2015 World of Art is always at the forefront of cuttingedge art criticism; Kelly Grovier’s book Art Since 1989 is praised by the Times Literary Supplement for its ‘sparkling prose’.

2020 The World of Art relaunches.

A contemporary new cover design based on classical principles The World of Art's new cover design features fluid shapes based on a grid inspired by the Golden Ratio, the system of mathematical proportion believed for millennia to be the secret of aesthetic harmony in nature, art and design.

A fresh, modern page layout Every element of the page grid has been reworked to: • create dynamic layouts that enable the reader to focus on the text and the imagery at the same time •

allow the images to be reproduced as large as possible, so the reader can study key works in detail as well as unearthing rarer surprises

• provide a versatile new template that works for the varied subject matters throughout the series
