This beautifully illustrated catalogue and its accompanying exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris demonstrate how Modigliani’s partnership with his gallerist Paul Guillaume influenced his painting. When Amedeo Modigliani arrived in Paris in 1906, the Jewish-Italian artist was a painter. His meeting with sculptor Constantin Brancusi in 1909 was a revelation, and inspired Modigliani to sculpt—almost exclusively—until 1914, when he met art dealer Paul Guillaume. The effects of this meeting were sudden and total. Modigliani would return to painting and never look back. This volume unveils the relationship that prompted this change through analysis of Modigliani’s paintings and Guillaume’s writings.

benandsebastian : Silent Parties
Languages: English, Danish
Edited by benandsebastian
Photographs by David Stjernholm
Ruttkowski;68 – 10 Years
Ruttkowski;68
Silent Parties is benandsebastian’s recently completed public commission for the Court of Aarhus. This artwork focuses on mute, nonhuman participants in legal history, spanning from a 15th century case involving a cock being tried for allegedly laying an egg, to a contemporary case examining whether life-size, singing and dancing robots at an American restaurant chain should be considered live performers.
benandsebastian have collaborated with specialists working within the fields of law, robotics, ethics, anthropology and cognitive science, addressing ways in which nonhumans have been silent, but also revelatory, parties in legal history.

Reena Saini Kallat: Deep Rivers Run Quiet
Edited by Helen Hirsch
Plastic is everywhere. It permeates our everyday lives, is inexpensive and available worldwide. Thanks to their literally astonishing plasticity, plastics soon began to fascinate artists as well - both as a symptom and a symbol of mass culture. In the brief history of the “Plastic Age” the versatile substance transformed from the epitome of progress, utopian spirit, and democratization of consumerism into a threat. Plastic World offers a broad panorama of the artistic use of plastic and a position towards a matter that matters to us all.

The Great Masters of Art

Christoph Wagner
The Great Masters of Art
Life and work of the artist and style icon Frida Kahlo in a compact overview.
Frida Kahlo has become an icon of art with her powerfully expressive work. Her pictures not only reflect a view of herself, her fears, the biography of her illness, her passions and her joie de vivre; they also take up subjects which were regarded by society as taboo. As a pioneer of the feminist movement, this Mexican artist serves women the world over as a figure of identification. Kahlo’s biography had a direct influence on her subjects: her not uncomplicated marriage to the artist Diego Rivera, her tragic accident, and her childlessness, loneliness and grief.

His paintbrush set everything in motion: the landscape of Provence, the colourful still lifes, his portraits and the picturesque coast of southern France. More than any other artist, Paul Cézanne, the “Father of Modernism”, captured the light and the play of colours of the South in his pictures and lent them through his new pictorial language a liveliness and dynamism which continue to fascinate viewers to this day.
In this publication the author Christoph Wagner positions Cézanne as an artistic genius who opened up for future generations a completely new view of the world through his paintings and watercolours.

A Picture of Poetry
The Artist’s Books of Dia al-Azzawi
Edited by Louisa Macmilan
While the incorporation of Arabic text in paintings, sculptures and graphic design is one of the best-known features of the work of the Iraqi artist Dia al-Azzawi (born in 1939), these artist’s books (dafatir, plural of daftar) more directly reflect Azzawi’s love of literature itself and how it informs his overall practice. A deep fascination with poetry, both written and spoken, led him to create over 100 artworks based on a huge range of literature, including poetry from the medieval and modern eras and works by Arab and non-Arab writers.

George Floyd is an African-American who died during his arrest on May 25, 2020, when a policeman suffocated him by pressing his knee onto Floyd’s neck for nine minutes to immobilize him. After seeing the images of Floyd’s death, Giangiacomo Rocco di Torrepadula shot nine photographs, one for each of those nine minutes, and sent postcards of one of them. The reaction was surprising, with more than 300 responses from well-known cultural figures, artists, and creatives, as well as the general public. Hannah Villiger (1951–1997) was an extraordinary voice in late twentieth-century contemporary art, but her oeuvre came to an abrupt end with her untimely death. This publication traces a path from the sculptures she created in the 1970s and her little-known drawings to the black-and-white photographs and works with the Polaroid camera that Villiger started making in the 1980s. Alex Webb: Dislocations
Alex Webb
A contemporary reimagining of Alex Webb’s long out-of-print, limited edition book Dislocations.
• Recognized as a pioneer of colour photography, Alex Webb reimagines his 1998 limited edition artist’s book Dislocations for the 21st century.
• Originally gathering images from disparate locations over Webb’s oeuvre, this revisited mediation on the act of photography as a form of dislocation was spurred by the pandemic, its closed borders and disrupted travel.
• Includes new photographs taken in the 25 years since first publication.
With an essay by Garnette Cadogan, this characteristically exquisite book brings a fresh perspective to Webb’s expansive catalogue, and speaks to the palpable sense of dislocation in our time.

Lee Miller. Man Ray
Fashion - Love - War
Edited by Victoria Noel-Johnson
Model, photographer, muse, the first female war correspondent to report the horrors of the concentration camps liberated by American troops, and 20thcentury icon. Lee Miller was all this and much more.
Through approximately 140 photographs by Lee Miller and Man Ray, some objects d’art, and video documents loaned by Lee Miller Archives and Fondazione Marconi, this book intends to do justice to this woman as beautiful as she was clever and talented, taking her out of Man Ray’s overpowering shadow. It will reveal a deep but complicated relationship more objectively (Man Ray was first her teacher, then lover, and in the end friend), and document the effect they both had on each other and how it inspired their work.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice, the volume features texts by the curator, Ami Bouhassane (Miller’s grand-daughter), and Anthony Penrose (Miller’s son). It also includes portraits by Man Ray of friends and important protagonists of the period (Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí), as well as surrealist shots of Lee Miller in which she seeks to investigate and reveal her soul and torments.

Photographer Céline Clanet takes interest in this little-known and rarely shown underworld. The word which returns in the work of Ivor Prickett is home, ‘house’. Japan on a Glass Plate
The Adventure of Photography in Yokohama and Beyond, 1853–1912
Sebastian Dobson
In the 1990s, The Mission District in San Franciso was the center of a queer cultural renaissance, and the feeling of community was palpable. Chloe Sherman was both a member of this community and an ardent visual chronicler. Her documentary photographic work on 35mm film stems from a commitment to capturing the vibrancy, tenderness, individuality, resilience, and joy within this subculture that was derided by mainstream society. Distilling the spirit of the time, her debut monograph is a candid portrait of a vibrant era that connects current and future generations to the pulse of San Francisco at a pivotal chapter in queer history.

Reframing Nomadic Pastoralism
On the Move features three different groups of nomadic or seminomadic pastoralists in three vastly different regions – the Central Sahara in Africa, the Arabian Gulf and the Central Eurasian steppes – highlighting crosscutting themes relevant to contemporary concerns about the human condition and our planetary future. The book shares lessons we might learn from the ways of pastoral nomads, such as living lightly on the land and working creatively with and through the sometimes challenging natural environments within which they move and know intimately. Themes under exploration include mobility and self-sufficiency; materialism, consumerism and environmental destruction.

Preben Holst: The Stranger
Edited by Joakim Borda-Pedreira
This book presents The Stranger, a photographic series that spans over nearly two decades. It began when the photographer Preben Holst decided to approach a stranger in a park and asked if he could do a portrait of him. Fascinated by the strength and immediacy of the resulting images, he continued to make portraits of strangers in cities such as Copenhagen, London, and Oslo, where he now lives. The young men captured by Holst’s analogue camera become testimonies of the subtle and gradual changes that urban masculine identity has undergone since the turn of the millennium.

Givenchy Catwalk
The Complete Collections
The Catwalk Series
The first and only comprehensive overview of Givenchy’s collections, presented through catwalk photography and published in collaboration with the celebrated fashion house.
Founded by the dashing Hubert de Givenchy in 1952, the house would go on to symbolize the height of effortless elegance, as embodied by Givenchy’s muse (and close friend) Audrey Hepburn. After its founder’s retirement in 1995, John Galliano first took the reins of the house, before being succeeded by a young Alexander McQueen, who created his first (and only) haute couture collections for Givenchy. More recently, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci took the brand into a resolutely contemporary direction following his appointment in 2005 (dressing icons such as Beyoncé), followed by Clare Waight Keller and American designer Matthew M. Williams.
This definitive publication – the only monograph in print on the house of Givenchy – opens with a concise history of the fashion house before exploring the collections themselves, which are organized chronologically. Each new era in Givenchy’s history opens with a brief overview and biography of the new designer, while individual collections are introduced by a short text unveiling their influences and highlights, illustrated with carefully curated catwalk images. A rich reference section, including an extensive index, concludes the book.

The first Sports Banger retrospective, published to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the anarchic, genre-bending cult fashion house.
Sports Banger is a genre-defying, boundary-breaking fashion collective run by Jonny Banger, who interrogates British pop culture, fashion, class and politics through the subversion and (mis)appropriation of branding. This book tells the story of the first ten years, charting the rise of the brand from an underground bootlegging operation to an all-inclusive, internationally recognized fashion house, record label and socially conscious satirist in the mould of a modern-day Hogarth.

Ornament is Not a Crime
Contemporary interiors with a postmodern twist
Rebecca Gross
An escape from minimalism, celebrating bold colour, curves, patterns and the unconventional in contemporary interiors.
Today a new wave of interior designers are once again turning to postmodernism for inspiration. These contemporary rebels are challenging the Modernist gospel of ‘ornament is crime’. Breaking free of the minimalism of mid-century modern and the neutrals of Scandinavian design to inject homes with pop and personality.
These twenty-one homes from around the world transform the ordinary and everyday with joyful colours and patterns, the celebration of surfaces and the juxtaposition of materials. There are twists and plays on shape, scale and form, and expressive and symbolic references, as well as a healthy dose of wit and whimsy. Whether you’re a design enthusiast or simply looking to infuse your home with some fresh inspiration, this book is sure to spark your imagination.

The Slavic Myths
Noah Charney and Svetlana Slapšak
A Pulitzer-nominated author and one of the great public intellectuals of Slavic culture bring to life the unfamiliar myths and legends of the Slavic world.
Though less familiar to us than the legends of ancient Egypt, Greece and Scandinavia, in the world of Slavic mythology we find much that we can recognize: petulant deities, demons and faeries; witches, the sinister vestica, whose magic may harm or heal; a supreme god who can summon storms and hurl thunderbolts. The vampire – usually the only Serbo-Croatian word in any foreign-language dictionary – and the werewolf emerge from the shallow graves of Slavic belief.

The Enemies of Rome
From Hannibal to Attila the Hun
Philip Matyszak
This engrossing book looks at the growth and eventual demise of Rome from the viewpoint of those vanquished by Rome. They varied from the highly cultivated Greeks and Egyptians to wild and rebellious Britons and Germans, to the Asiatic empires of the Persians and Parthians. Their leaders were driven by ambition, vindictive hatred, fear, political calculation, or naked greed. Some fought to preserve their heritage, some for personal survival, and others from a warrior’s love of battle.

Welcome to the Grand Hotel of Feelings, where all kinds of feelings come and stay. Every guest has unique needs. Anger, for example, is very loud and needs plenty of space to scream and shout. Sadness speaks in a small voice and occasionally floods the bathroom. Gratitude likes wandering about in nature; you never know when she might come and sit by your side.
A beautiful and imaginative title that brings the difficulties of emotional management to life with warmth, humour and a touch of Wes Anderson.
