A new edition of a book that has sold 150,000 copies worldwide: the definitive retrospective of one of the world’s most popular and acclaimed artists working today.
The story of Hockney is one of passion: passion for seeing, passion for telling, passion for images. Hockney’s art is a celebration of what it is to be alive. All his pictures – sometimes tender, as when he draws close friends and family; sometimes playful, as in his paintings of lazy, carefree days by the pool; sometimes awe-inspiring, as with his monumental images of the Grand Canyon – convey what it means to be in the world, to see it, to move in it, to love it.
This constant exploration of how to communicate such experiences and perceptions through art emerges with particular clarity in this visually dense volume, now updated with a new final chapter that focuses on his prolific recent work in series across various media, including the iPad. Charting almost sixty years of extraordinary creativity, the book is arranged thematically to show the evolution and diversity of Hockney’s prolific paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints and photography.

A new take on the history of art through the eyes of the international phenomenon that is Banksy.
Few would dispute that Banksy is the most famous urban artist in the world today. That he is also one of the most perceptive art historians of our age might come as a surprise to many. Taken together, the myriad memorable works the street artist has created over the course of the past thirty years, since his emergence in the Bristol underground scene in the early 1990s, constitute an audacious commentary on the history of image-making – a captivating critique waiting to be pieced together.
From his droll lampooning of the Lascaux cave paintings to his reinvention of Monet’s enchanting water-lily pond, a reboot of Géricault’s tragic gutwrenching vision to Vermeer’s girl now instilled with street cred, everyone’s genius is grist for his unmerciful mill. Far from being diminished in their significance, however, the works that Banksy ruthlessly parodies are ultimately refurbished by the ordeal. Banksy’s iconoclastic works force us to rethink our affection for, and appreciation of, great works of art that define cultural history.

In The Artist’s Palette more than 50 unique palettes are presented alongside stunning paintings by the celebrated artists who used them, revealing through expert analysis of colour, brushstrokes and technique fresh insights into their work and practice.
The Artist’s Palette will appeal to an art history audience, a wider audience eager to learn more about the use of colour by the great artists and amateur painters looking for inspiration in the creation of their own work.

A charming compilation of the many depictions of cats by the artist John Craxton, who was closely associated with Lucian Freud, with an introduction and commentary by the writer and artist Andrew Lambirth.
Here is a highly appealing, picture-led account of the cat-loving passion of the artist John Craxton (1922–2009), an important figure in modern British painting, written from the viewpoint of someone who knew him well. Craxton’s significance as an early artist companion of Lucian Freud, his time in Greece, and his collaborations with Patrick Leigh Fermor have generated growing interest in his art, and he has been championed by David Attenborough and Andrew Marr, among many others.
Cats permeate Craxton’s art, weaving their way through his paintings, drawings, and prints, bringing humour and mischief to his images, as they did to his daily existence. This delightful book offers an accessible introduction to this popular artist, and will appeal to the devotee and the uninitiated alike.

Matisse and the Sea offers a new approach to the understanding of the important painting, Bathers with a Turtle, exploring, for the first time, the seminal role of African sculpture in the evolution of the painting.
Matisse and the Sea focuses on the Saint Louis Art Museum’s iconic painting, Bathers with a Turtle. The exhibition catalogue brings together related works by Matisse in a range of media (paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, prints, textiles, paper cutouts) and objects that influenced the picture, including African sculpture and painting by Cezanne. It also includes revealing new conservation analysis.
The book examines two themes related to Bathers with a Turtle. First, the evolution of the picture, exploring Matisse’s appropriation of a range of sources as he sought to develop an experimental and novel visual language. The second examines the afterlife of the picture, looking at its impact on Matisse’s later imagery of bathers and the sea, as well as its collector and exhibition history in Germany and the USA.

Yayoi Kusama: Infinite Present
Stefano Raimondi
A tribute to Yayoi Kusama, the world’s most popular artist, according to The Art Newspaper and The Guardian.
Yayoi Kusama is one of Japan’s most important and famous artists, beloved across multiple generations and different audiences, capable of wonder and amazement. Infinito presente is a tribute to her original and unique art, focusing on Fireflies on the Water one of her most iconic Infinity Mirror Rooms from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Fireflies on the Water is a room-sized installation where, as the title suggests, the lights seem almost natural, like fireflies on a quiet summer’s night. The pool of water creates an incredible sense of stillness and the mirrors reflect never-ending images of themselves, creating a sidereal ambience. Space appears infinite, without top or bottom, beginning or end. Fireflies on the Water embodies an almost hallucinatory approach to reality. Although linked to the artist’s personal mythology and the process of therapeutic work, this work also references sources as diverse as the myth of Narcissus and Kusama’s native Japanese landscape.

Anastasia Samoylova is one of the most dynamic image makers of our time, using her mastery of color and formal dynamics to explore issues of climate change, consumerism, and the overdevelopment of twenty-firstcentury cities. Russian-born and now a resident of Florida, Samoylova moves between observational photography and studio practice, creating imagery that is absolutely “of the moment” but also drawing from influences including the Russian avant-garde, cubism, pop art, and the postmodern interest in the blurred lines between image and reality.

A World of Our Own Women Artists Against the Odds
Frances Borzello
101 Surrealists
Desmond Morris
A new edition of one of the first books to focus on the world of women artists and their practice.
Women have always practised as artists, but for centuries the art world considered them mere dilettantes. Their work was derided as secondrate and they were considered intruders in a male profession. This study examines how, against the odds, they overcame these difficulties and shifts the focus away from women artists as ‘victims’ to give an account of how they actually practised their art. This stirring account documents the centuries-long struggle of gifted women who confronted the exclusionary tactics of a maledominated art establishment but pressed ahead undaunted to gain acceptance as sought-after professionals.

2024 marks the centenary of Surrealism, one of the most influential artistic movements of the modern era. In 1924, André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to arms which established Surrealism as a literary and artistic movement.
Featuring 101 artists, from the famous – Duchamp, Dali, Magritte, Miro, Carrington, Kahlo, Picabia, Ernst and others – to the neglected – Mesens, Rimmington, Sage, Fini, Bellmer, Colquhoun and Gonzalez – this book draws on the author’s personal knowledge of the Surrealists, capturing in concise form their life histories, idiosyncrasies and often-complex love lives.

Foreword by Paul Dash
The Curator’s Handbook
Museums, Commercial Galleries, Independent Spaces
Adrian George
The first major monograph on sculptor Ronald Moody, exploring his legacy and impact through his key artistic relationships, networks and influences, and his relationship with nature, humanity and spirituality.
Jamaican-born sculptor Ronald Moody is one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, yet until now there has been no comprehensive monograph on his work. Coinciding with a major retrospective at The Hepworth Wakefield in summer 2024, this biography moves beyond the dominant narrative, which grounds Moody as forgotten, invisible and marginalized. Instead, it contemplates Moody through a lens that explores the development of his art practice, contributions, impact and value to the landscape of British and international art history.

Tracing the final 30 years of Michelangelo’s career, this book examines how the great master used art and faith to explore the common human experience of ageing in a rapidly changing world.
Michelangelo was not the isolated, tortured genius of artistic legend but a man who maintained a close circle of friends and associates into old age. His late drawings, letters and poetry offer powerful insights into his psychology, reflecting his Catholic faith, his commanding intellectual engagement, and his hope for eternal life. Built on the British Museum’s extraordinary collection of drawings, this book explores Michelangelo’s relationships and late creativity to go beyond the towering Renaissance master known today.

Lee Quiñones: Fifty Years of New York Graffiti Art and Beyond

Michael Stipe: Even the birds gave pause
Michael Stipe
The first monograph of Puerto Rican born artist Lee Quiñones presenting his monumental work and following his evolution over five decades.
When 14-year-old Lee embarked on his first spray paint mural in 1974, he carried marker drawings into the New York City subway train yards that served as studies to his 52-ft long rolling murals. Drawings, artifacts, and subway photography illustrate how Lee’s emergence served as a catalyst for what is now acknowledged as the street art movement. Images of Lee’s trains illustrate how he changed the face of the movement, infusing kinetic elements of futurism in over 120 subway car murals across the transit system.

”I wanted to draw attention to this geometric, rationalized, quantified world.” – Peter Halley
Throughout his career, Peter Halley (b. 1953, New York) has developed a vocabulary derived from geometric abstraction that reflects the contemporary world. His works are inhabited by “prisons”, “cells” and “conduits”, the result of a personal interpretation of New York society in the 80s and the advent of technology. Many institutions have works by Peter Halley in their collections: the MoMA in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Tate in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Unique view of the ‘tronies’ in art from the Netherlands
Our fascination for faces transcends eras and cultures. This book highlights a remarkable genre in painting to which little attention has so far been paid: tronies or study heads, which were intended first and foremost to depict an emotion or a character trait. Since the model’s identity did not matter, painters could truly go to town with these heads.

Raphael: Revolution in Tapestry Design
Katja Schmitz-von Ledebur
Art and its Market
The spectacular beauty of Raphael’s tapestries as you have never seen it before
In 1515, Pope Leo X commissioned the Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), now generally known as Raphael in English, to make the cartoons for a series of ten tapestries with scenes from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. This commission played an instrumental part in the stylistic development of the Flemish tapestries, a marvellous illustration of princely splendour in the sixteenth century.

Otti Berger created fabrics that fundamentally changed the understanding of what textiles could be and do. A core member of the experimental approach to textiles at the Bauhaus, she also was a female entrepreneur in the frenzied time that was the early 1930s in Berlin. His Life and Complete Works in Oil
Sanyu: His Life and Works in Oil traces the life of the Chinese artist (1895–1966) from his early years in China and Japan, to his artistic experimentation and development in Paris and New York, ending in his tragic death, impoverished and forgotten.
Today, however, Sanyu is one of the most coveted Chinese modern artists. An examination of his life reveals that it was precisely the polarities and tensions he experienced that spurred him to create a unique pictorial language that so dynamically integrated the spirit of Western modernity with centuries-old established Chinese traditions. This biography is the most comprehensive record of Sanyu’s life to date.

In 1921, Sanyu was among many Chinese artists who left his homeland to travel abroad. He started to paint in oil in 1929, under the direction of author and art collector Henri-Pierre Roché. In contrast to his drawing, here he preferred to reference images or memories from his youth and his rich cultural heritage. After World War II he traveled to New York, where he became roommates and close friends with Robert Frank, and became influenced by the New York School. Sanyu returned to Paris in 1950, where his life was characterized by hopeful but false starts and debilitating failures. Charles Stankievech: The Desert Turned to Glass
Edited and with contributions by
Dehlia Hannah and Nadim Samman
In 2019, Stefan Marx began his series of monotypes. In collaboration with Berlin-based screen printer Bjorn Wiede, he developed his own working method: Three individual images are created in three steps - one positive, one negative and the “ghost.” What initially fascinated him about this new approach was the bold application of paint and the intensity of the pigments. During the application of the paint, the surface of the picture itself is not touched - instead the image results from the manipulations on the silkscreen itself.

Zhou Li’s lyrical abstract paintings capture her acute sensory observations of the world: lightness and shadow, solidity and dissolution, the sense of being. Building upon the history of European painting and the central tenets of traditional Chinese art, Zhou Li harnesses both traditions to develop a distinct painterly language. Insightful poetic texts and a distinctive thematic colorway respond to each body of work.

Grayson Perry
The Vanity of Small Differences
Foreword
by Caroline Douglas Essay by Suzanne Moore, Adam Lowe and Grayson Perry
An essential companion to one of the key contemporary art works of the last decade, Grayson Perry’s series of tapestries, The Vanity of Small Differences
The book features Perry’s six vibrant and highly detailed tapestries bearing the influence both of early Renaissance painting and of William Hogarth’s moralising series, literally weaving characters, incidents and objects from the artist’s research into a modern day version of Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress (1733). This is an essential guide to the work of one of Britain’s best-loved artists.

Edward Hopper: Inner and Outer Worlds
Edited by Stefan Koja
Slow Painting presents the work of 19 primarily British and UK-based artists whose work explores ideas around the concept of ‘slowness’ and what it might mean in relation to contemporary painting: how it might be present in the making of the work, how the works reveal themselves slowly, and how they fit into the continuum of art history.

Edward Hopper (1882–1967) is one of the best known American artists of the 20th century. His works are regarded as the epitome of a representation of American life. This catalogue casts a fresh look at Hopper’s oeuvre and analyses it in a dialogue with works by the old masters. This is a completely new approach, because to date works by Hopper and the old masters have never been shown together. Central to this catalogue are the points which his works have in common with those of Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675).

Edited by Frank Feltens Essay by Paul Berry and Michiyo Morioka
Hex: Through my hands I see
Edited by Jürgen Tesch and Valentina Fogher
This volume focuses on the ways Japanese painters from the late 1600s to the twentieth century pictured China, both as a real place and an imagined promised land. It features three essays by renowned Japanese art historians in addition to more than fifty catalogue entries highlighting unusual artworks revealing Japanese artists’ complex responses to Chinese art, history and culture. It also challenges the established narrative of an exclusively Western-inspired modern Japan by offering a more nuanced approach to understanding the country’s struggle with reconciling the old with the new as it reinvented itself into a modern nation-state.

Thread Painting is an original exploration of the relationships between dye, thread, paper, paint and time. British artist Ptolemy Mann’s studio practice bridges weaving and painting, creating distinctive, refined and radiant wall-based work, often on a large scale. Her early work was focused on weaving and she then turned to painting on paper, later combining the two to paint directly onto her handwoven artworks. The results are simultaneously linear and gestural, meditative and vibrant.
Features over 300 stunning full-colour images of these three phases in Mann’s artistic career, and is the first published monograph on the artist.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens
Charlotte Bolland
This is an incredible selection of images, created through AI promtography. None of the places, people or creatures in this book exist in the physical realm. Instead, they are conjured from the sum of human experience in our deep collective well. “I press enter and four versions of an image start appearing in the darkness. I have prompted deliberately, starting with characters and themes, the mood, and what matters most. Adding lesser details towards the end. I do not reference any existing work or artist, but I am specific with the time and setting. Slowly layers are added, and shapes are taking form.” The result is a book that is both beautiful and intriguing.

Arnaldo Pomodoro: The Great Theatre of Civilizations
Edited by Lorenzo Respi and Andrea Viliani
Born in 1940 in New York, New York, Jessie Homer French lives and works in Mountain Center, California. Homer French is a self-taught, self-proclaimed “regional narrative painter” who routinely, perhaps even obsessively, paints archetypes of death, nature, and rural life.
Through a simplified language of apparently naive, flat colors and calm brushstrokes, her paintings emerge as a continuous analysis of her surroundings, in which creation and destruction coexist with exemplary candor.

Walasse Ting (b. 1929, Wuxi, China, d. 2010, New York) was one of the most radical and independent figures of his time. His work fused the traditions of Chinese art with the rebellious spirit of the French avant-garde, and combined the joy of the Northern European CoBrA movement with the kinesthetic power of Abstract Expressionism.
This book provides readers the opportunity to immerse themselves in Ting’s world, in which female figures with rainbow-colored flesh are surrounded by flora, fauna and a wild menagerie. It also documents the story of Ting’s diasporic life, the formation of his transnational identity and his defiantly independent spirit.

Accompanies the first major exhibition on Käthe Kollwitz in the U.S. in more than thirty years, and the first presentation at a New York City museum.

ON THE CONTEMPLATION OF NATURE
One of his generation’s most popular artists, German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich is known for his allegorical landscapes that convey a deep sense of contemplation and melancholy. 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of this outstanding artist, whose paintings continue to gain in topicality - hardly a discussion on climate change without one of his iconic paintings, such as The Sea of Ice, being invoked as a silent witness. Barbara Hess examines the painter’s work and his life, from its lasting poignancy to the great themes of Romanticism and drawing.

Dive into the colourful, fun, and futuristic universe of Verner Panton
Verner Panton is the enfant terrible of Danish design. While his Danish colleagues during the 1950s and 60s prioritised natural materials and manual craftsmanship, Panton went abroad and experimented with coloured plastic, fibre glass, steel and synthetic fabrics and tried out new industrial mass-production methods. This book examines Panton’s almost scientific approach to environments, colours, systems and patterns unfolded in colourful total interiors and imaginative product designs.

A collection of writings that sets out Kengo Kuma’s theories of architecture, but also a left field critique of where the architecture world finds itself today.
This is architectural theory, but written as narrative, full of intriguing vignettes, such as the fact that in Ancient Rome windows were fitted with slices of marble because glass was so expensive. It’s written in a very Japanese form - a series of mini essays that circle around a theme, and is aimed at a highly literate audience. Seventy related essays across four sections set out Kuma’s rejection of the architecture of volume and mass that categorised the 20th-century in favour of a more ad-hoc architecture that can be easily disassembled and, by drawing on tried and tested practices of the past, touches the earth more lightly.

The book is intended to awaken an appetite for green architecture; a catalog of successful project examples shows in detail how the design and practical implementation of greened builidng exteriors can succeed around the globe.
For some time now, climate change has been a major concern that has also led to a rethinking of construction worldwide. Cities in particular aim to become ‘greener’ to improve their quality of life. The most exciting and most visible strategy in this regard is undoubtedly the planting of roofs, facades and courtyards.
This volume presents impressive and promising concepts and projects from around the world, which explore the potential of greened building envelopes. The focus of this book is on the diverse ways in which organic materials are used in construction today and how they can function as independent planning elements and design factors also in combination with new and innovative building technologies.

A Photographic Pilgrimage to the Temples of Modernism
Sacred Modernity documents the dramatic shift in ecclesiastical architecture across post-war Europe. Boldly designed, outrageous and provocative for their time, the aesthetic of this period still ignites great debate between modernists and traditionalists. The book represents the first attempt by a photographer to collate the religious architecture of the mid-century high modern years that took many forms, from Brutalism to Structural Expressionism, under a singular artistic vision.

The direct sequel to a classic photobook. An exceptional selection of photographs from Daido Moriyama’s seminal magazine publication Record from 2017 to today.
The first thirty issues of Record were edited by Mark Holborn into the now classic 2017 photobook of the same title. This sequel, also edited by Mark Holborn, picks up from where the original left off, with a selection of images and texts by Moriyama from issues thirty-one to fifty of the magazine. With Moriyama now in his eighties, Record 2 will likely be the end of the story. But despite his advancing years, the work is unmistakably Moriyama’s aesthetic— fiercely contrasted images with fragmentary, intensely composed frames that express the vision of one of the greatest photographers.

The Synthetic Eye Photography Transformed in the Age of AI
Fred Ritchin
During his six-year journey across the United States creating the project that became American Geography, Matt Black collected objects in the locations he visited. Each location is designated as an area of ‘concentrated poverty’ – a US Census definition for places with poverty rates of 20% or higher. Over time, the objects he found and collected began to take on symbolic significance.
This new monograph, a companion volume to American Geography, presents photographs of these objects, assemblages and collages, previously unpublished images, and the voices of those who are cut off from the ‘American Dream’.

‘The best account of Angkor available in English … takes the reader on a panoramic tour of Cambodian history from earliest times to the latest finds’ — Ben Kiernan, author of The Pol Pot Regime
A great deal was already known about the history of Angkor and the brilliant Khmer civilization that built it thanks to pioneering work by archaeologists and scholars, but our knowledge has now been completely revolutionized by cutting-edge technology. Airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) has revealed entire cities that were previously unknown and a complex urban landscape with highways and waterways, profoundly transforming our interpretations of the development and supposed decline of Angkor.
Respected archaeologist Michael Coe is joined by Damian Evans, who led this remarkable programme of scientific exploration, to present for the first time in book form the results and implications of these ground-breaking discoveries that are rewriting history.

The Emperors of Byzantium
Kevin Lygo
Introduction by Bettany Hughes
Foreword by Robert Peston
After an introduction into the historic and geographic timeframe of the ancient Pharaohs, the book explores royal iconography, decoding the insignia worn and held by the king, or the names and titles covering most royal monuments. The core of the book investigates the main roles of the king, as high priest, as the head of the royal family, as the administrative ruler of the country and as the leader of the army and diplomat. Following an investigation into the preparation for the king’s eternal life, the book closes on a contemporary perspective from Egypt and how the notion of the Pharaoh still resonates today.

Mandarin, citron, pomello, bergamot, kumquat… Citrus traces the history of today’s global superfood from its cultivation in the ancient world from three original ‘true’ species, via Arab trade routes, the noble collectors of medieval Europe, imperial conquerors on the high seas, and merchants risking ruin for the highest-value fruit crop ever known.
From the art of the Renaissance to modern advertising and graphic design, this richly illustrated, invigorating cultural history reveals how these extraordinary, life-giving fruits have flavoured, scented, healed and coloured our world.

Elements is an eclectic, evocative and resoundingly beautiful treasury of imagery exploring depictions of the elemental forces that reveal their profound significance to ancient philosophers, alchemists and astrologers, and modern artists, photographers and scientists alike.
Expertly curated, themed and paired by image alchemist Stephen Ellcock, modern and visionary images are juxtaposed with the ancient and arcane; the creative power of the elements is contrasted with the disastrous; and the connections of the elements with the seasons, the humours, the signs of the zodiac and parts of the body are revealed.
Following physician and occultist Robert Fludd’s (1574–1637) presentation of the order of the elements, Ellcock guides readers through a remarkable selection of images. He makes parallels with the five elements of eastern philosophies and their relationship to the chakras, acupuncture and Chinese astrology. Introductory text and insightful panel texts punctuate the pages, illuminating key concepts.

Written by award-winning performance poet Joseph Coelho, this book is a collection of 14 poems that takes readers on a gentle journey into dreamland. Each poem is inspired by a calming work of art, reproduced in the book alongside the heart-warming illustrations of Allison Colpoys.
The book takes its title from Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night, which inspired Coelho’s evocative poem River Sky:
I gaze upon the starry night It twists into a river-sky my every breath, a swirling light I gaze upon the starry night.
Features poems inspired by David Hockney’s Sleeping Dogs, Vivian Maier’s Woman with Baby and Faith Ringgold’s quilted artwork of Cassie Lightfoot flying against a night sky.
