The Art of Colour
The History of Art in 39 Pigments
Kelly Grovier
A illuminating approach to a subject of perennial interest from a highly regarded writer: this is a history of art through colour, not a history of colour through art.
Did you know that the surging waves that crest and curl in Hokusai’s perilous Great Wave off Kanagawa owe their absorbing blue lustre to an alchemist who was born in Frankenstein’s Castle in 1673? The history of colour is an epic saga of human ingenuity and insatiable desire. Read this book and you will never look at a work of art in quite the same way.

Time and again Daniel Richter devises new ways of being “modern” in a medium that has long been labeled old-fashioned and anachronistic. Kabul was once famous as a city of blossoming gardens. What once was, can one day become again, wrote the political scientist Ekkehart Krippendorff. Marc Chagall (1887–1985) is regarded as the poet amongst modernist artists. His works from the 1930s and 1940s are less well known. In over 100 haunting paintings, works on paper and costumes, the volume traces the artist’s search for a pictorial language in the face of displacement and persecution. It presents important works in which Chagall increasingly focuses on his Jewish environment: numerous self-portraits, his devotion to allegorical and Biblical subjects, important designs from his time in exile in the United States and main works like The Falling Angel

In recent years, Heinrich Campendonk has enjoyed an unparalleled rediscovery and a new critical assessment of his extensive oeuvre. Biermann described Campendonk’s early work as a unique symphony of color and rhythm. Embracing Forms
Edited by Yvette Deseyve
In around 1800 Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764–1850) was the most famous artist in Prussia. More than most others he knew how to combine the outstanding position as court sculptor with entrepreneurial success and a steady bourgeois existence, and thereby to cultivate an international network. Leonardo da Vinci and Bernardino Luini
Edited by David Alan Brown
This book examines a selection of paintings by Bernardino Luini (ca. 1480/85–1532) that were influenced by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519). This book revisits the idea that Leonardo da Vinci was the essential inspiration for his younger contemporary Bernardino Luini. Instead of a broad notion of Leonardo’s influence, however, the book offers a more complex understanding of the relation between the two artists, one that seeks to account for Luini’s much-criticized lack of originality vis-à-vis the older master.

One of the key figures in Japan’s pivotal Mono-ha phenomenon of the late 1960s and early 1970s, artist Kishio Suga has realized a visionary practice of ephemeral, site-specific installations and performative interventions into the everyday environment. Writing is an important mechanism in Suga’s artistic process, and his output spans aphoristic statements, fragmentary notes, art criticism, theoretical essays, and detective novels. Foreword
Romare Bearden: Patchwork Quilt
Romare Bearden’s art speaks powerfully of specific, often disregarded, life experiences while making them broadly accessible. Patchwork Quilt (1970), a monumental composition dominated by a prone figure and bands of fabric unfolding across the composition, was acquired by The Museum of Modern Art the year it was made, and quickly became a landmark in Bearden’s career. In this latest volume of the MoMA One on One series, curator Esther Adler explores Bearden’s complicated centrality in mid-twentieth century art, and the continuing reach of his legacy.

If I Had A Hammer
The FotoFest Biennial 2022 central exhibition, If I Had a Hammer, considers the ways artists utilize images to unpack the ideological underpinnings that inspire collective cultural movements around the globe. Together, the twenty-three included artists propose alternative techniques of seeing and engaging with the world, working with both conventional and new media to shed light on the systems that encourage social theories and political imaginaries to become dogma at the click of a shutter or tap of a button.

Making a Scene!
How Visionary Individuals Created an International Photography Scene in Houston, Texas
Making a Scene! is the story of how visionary individuals created an international art world around photography. This is the story of how Houston became the place to be for photography.

The Norse Myths that Shape the Way We Think
Carolyne Larrington
A fresh look at the stories at the heart of Norse mythology, exploring their cultural impact right up to the present day.
The heroes and villains of Norse mythology have endured for centuries, infiltrating art, opera, film, television and books, shape-shifting – like the trickster Loki – to suit the cultures that encountered them. Through careful analysis of the literature and archaeology of the Norse world, Carolyne Larrington takes us deep into the realm described in the Icelandic sagas, from the gloomy halls of Hel to the dazzling heights of Asgard. She expertly examines the myths’ many modern-day reimaginings, revealing the guises that have been worn by the figures of Norse myth, including Marvel’s muscled, golden-haired Thor and George R.R Martin’s White Walkers, who march inexorably southwards, bringing their eternal winter with them.

Loosen up with a smile on your face...
Marion Deuchars has practiced yoga for many years, and well knows the benefits it brings. Now she shares that passion with her illustrated character Bob the Bird, whose expressive poses will charm you into a reviving session of yoga breathing, stretching, posing, and mindfulness.
Yoga for Stiff Birds rejects the clichés of studio photography in favour of a more immediate, inviting look. With a few brush strokes Marion helps Bob into every position from the downwardfacing dog to the tree; both useful and inspiring, her art will raise a smile, whether you’re a regular practitioner or a yoga novice, and will encourage even the creakiest reader to breathe, stretch, and bend like they never have before.

Forest Dream
A Flow State Jigsaw Puzzle
Elin Svensson
We all know flow, even if we don’t yet know what to call it: that blissful state of absorption, when you’re so engaged with what you’re doing that you don’t notice the time passing. Psychologists now know that this still, almost meditative, state, brings us a host of mental health benefits: balance, tranquility, and less stress.
With the first of her Flow puzzles, Elin Svensson uses gently harmonious colour gradients to create a calming mandala that will captivate the puzzler, and take them on a gentle journey to a place of calm.
The box also includes a short introduction to the flow state and its benefits, written by an authority in the field.
