Magazine of the Thames Valley HOG Chapter

Here at Thames Valley we’ve already started to celebrate Christmas, with the Chapter Party at The Calcot Hotel and the LoH Christmas Dinner at The World Turned Upside Down. Read about both events in this issue. TV wish everyone a merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

It’s a strange month, December. Along with all the excitement of Christmas festivities, and parties with families and friends, comes a feeling of finality as yet another year comes to an end. They seem to be going far too quickly these days and all the things I promised myself I’d do never seem to be entirely achieved. This year saw a major change in my lifestyle as I finally took the plunge and retired. I can’t say that I really know what to do with all this extra time but, hopefully, as the days get warmer and biking weather is once more upon us, I will be out there clocking up the miles for next year’s challenge! And don’t worry about the dark, in just two days, 21st December, it will be the winter solstice - the shortest day - and then the days start getting longer again! Sue

Happy birthday to you all!

Special Christmas cheer wished to those who have contributed to this month’s magazine: Ralph, Linda, Sue, Don, CJ, Nick, Bernie, Pat & Dave.

Hi everybody, and welcome to the last edition of Tales from the Riverbank for 2013. It’s been yet another great year at Thames Valley UK Chapter. We have been blessed with such good weather this year which has enabled us to enjoy even more rideouts and rallies during the summer months. As well as Harley Davidson celebrating its 110th & HOG celebrating its 30th, we also celebrated our 15th birthday in style at Sportsable with a great party and hog roast! For me, the icing on the cake for 2013 was the announcement of our new Dealership opening in 2014 with Mike Wilson as Dealer Principal. Christmas Party What a great evening! 44 of us celebrated Christmas together at The Great Western Hotel in Reading, albeit a bit early in November, but what the hell! We sat down to a 3 course Christmas dinner followed by coffee and mint chocolates. The entertainment went on until midnight which many of you enjoyed. A great event which I’m sure will be in next year’s calendar. Windsor Toy Run A great turn out of members for the Broom Farm Toy Run. Sixteen bikes at Sportsable and a total of 28 at Legoland. It was great to enjoy the parade this year for the first time as we normally marshal the ride for the organisers. It was estimated around 500 bikes took part this year. As usual, an enormous amount of gifts were donated for distribution. Thanks to everyone who managed to attend, it was a great ride for a good cause. Thames Valley Mileage Challenge At last club night we announced the winners of the Chapter Mileage Challenge. Forty seven members signed up for the challenge with 5 members who have not returned their final mileages. However this still gives us 43 who have covered a total of 182,507 miles from March to October! This year’s winners in the ladies section was Toni Charles with 6,267 miles. Runner up, Sue Brown with 5,325 miles. In the Guys section, Paul Major with 12,047 miles, runner up, Paul Houghton with 10,888 miles. The member who receives the booby prize for returning the lowest miles travelled is Bruce Rumsby with 277 miles. 4

The winners received a bottle of wine each and a gift voucher for £25 - Bruce has yet to receive his prize! 28th Reading Toy Run What a fabulous day for the Toy Run. The weather was great which brought many extra bikes out to participate in the ride to Dr Barnardo’s School in Wokingham. As well as the extra bikes, there were so many spectators this year lining the route from Foster Wheeler’s through to Wokingham, clapping and waving at the bike riders as they passed. On arrival at Dr B’s, the first job was to find somewhere to park which is always a problem as the school has limited parking available, but everyone seemed to manage to park somewhere in Wokingham. It’s amazing just how many gifts are donated at the school every year. This year the queue to drop off the gifts stretched down the drive towards the main road. By the time the last gift was handed in the whole room became just packed, bursting with gifts which left only standing room for the volunteers who had a busy few hours stacking toys! On behalf of the Reading Toy Run committee I would like to thank every one of you who came to the Toy Run and donated gifts for the Barnardo’s children and local, needy families in the area. Those few hours riding in the toy run make a hell of a lot of people very happy and allows the underprivileged to enjoy Christmas. Well done folks!! Thames Valley UK Chapter 2014 The start of the year is always the busy bit for our club and the top of the list is always the riding season and the calendar. The Activities Team with Nij & Nick have been busy organising the road crew and organising rides for the year. This is where you, the members, get involved. We need ideas for events, rallies and rides to places of interest and things you would like to do. Our road crew are eager to lead rides to just about anywhere in the country so please talk to these people they are house trained and don’t bite ...often! Planned for next year we have already booked in the calendar The Cider Rally, Chapter ChillOut weekend, The Boys Weekend in the Lake District and Thunder in the Glens. Bookings for non-Dunedin Chapter members for Thunder in the Glens opens on the 3rd January via their web site, www.dunedinhog.com. Included in the cost of the rally tickets is your camping pitch for the weekend. If you are looking for something a bit more upmarket they have three hotels and a number of Alpine Lodges to rent. Each lodge has three bedrooms all with luxury bathrooms and everything you require for the weekend. These are suitable for three couples to share which you need to organise before booking tickets and accommodation online. If you are looking to book a lodge or one of the hotels on site you need to be pretty quick on the 3rdJanuary. I have certainly had another great year as your director at Thames Valley and am looking forward to 2014 and everything Thames Valley has to offer. Hazel and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Sue says... Hello Ladies Well, what a fab Xmas meal the ladies enjoyed! The World Turned Upside Down did us proud again and a good time was had by all. Hopefully a few pics will reach the editor before the mag goes to print. (See pages 8/9 - Editor) Thank you to everyone who responded back to me about the ladies 2014 trip away. A shopping trip came out tops and as a result I am proposing we combine our annual Xmas meal with an overnight trip to Bath Christmas Market from 28th – 30th November 2014. Having visited it this year, I think it would be a great place for us to go. So please let me know if you would like to come and I will start looking at hotels. It will also give us plenty of time to save up. In the meantime there was support for the Comedy Night at The Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell on 28th March. I will let you know soon what the prices are. 6

Last club night saw the announcement of who had ridden the most miles this season. Whilst the boys majored in the top spots us girls did a great job, too. Well done Toni for heading up the lady riders list and came 7th overall . Also, not that I am at all competitive (well maybe just a little bit) but, I just had to slip in that both Toni and I beat our esteemed Director into 12th position . Better luck next year Don All in all 47 people signed up to the Chapter Challenge and 9 were ladies - that's almost 1 in 5. 38 men rode an average of 3,876 miles each (147,317) and 9 ladies rode an average of 3,910 miles each (35,190) So, the ladies averaged more! …Well done girls! Anyway, it’s not about winning it’s about the taking part and the Miles of Fun programme is a great way of including and recognising the participation of club members and especially pillion riders. Congrats to Di for putting in 1,205 miles on 8 club rideouts and to Pat Jackson for joining 11 official rideouts and putting in 848 miles. Looking to the New Year, our first Saturday Social is planned for 25th January, at the Crooked Billet in Iver Heath www.fayre-square.com/pub/ crooked-billet-uxbridge-road-iver-heath/m8872/ All welcome from 12.30p.m. Happy Christmas everybody, looking forward to riding with you next year. Love to all, 7

LADIES OF HARLEY

THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN On Friday 13th December, the Thames Valley Ladies of Harley had their Christmas Dinner at The World Turned Upside Down in Reading. The food was excellent and plentiful - plates were piled high. A great party atmosphere prevailed and gifts were exchanged from the ‘Secret Santa’. A really good evening was had by all!

Calcot Hotel

The Thames Valley HOG Chapter met at the Calcot Hotel, Reading for the Chapter’s Christmas Dinner and Dance. Several couples were staying the night, and after getting all poshed up, they joined

the rest of us in the bar area. We then went into the Carvery and sat at our tables. A 3 course dinner was included, and after the empty starter plates were cleared away, we all went to the carvery service point to get our dinners. The whole main course (beef, gammon & turkey) was excellent and there was plenty of it; no one went hungry! It was followed by a choice of several desserts. Coffee and mints were Included, too. The disco played some very good music and we all danced the night away. Linda Friend

Meet the Members

Spotlight on... Ralph Ward Are you married/in a relationship? I am married to Liz. We have just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. She has no interest in bikes but is, fortunately, tolerant of mine. How long have you been together? We met almost 28 years ago in a wine bar in London near where we were both living. She had been to the cinema with a friend and popped in for a quick drink before closing time and ended up with me! Do you have any children? Yes, my son Matt is 21 and my daughter Katherine is 18. She has just moved to Nottingham to start university there. Any pets? Not at the moment. When my kids were younger they had two guinea pigs. How long have you been riding motorbikes? I started when I was 17 and am now 57. I did have a long break of over 20 years when I did not own or ride a motorbike. What was your first bike? It was a BSA Bantam D14/4. I have always had an interest in British motorbikes and have owned a Triumph Tiger Cub, two Triumph Bonnevilles and a Norton 750 Commando. 12

When did you get your first Harley? Just over three years ago, but I have always been fascinated by Harleys. It was a 1200 Sportster Custom and a great introduction to riding Harleys. What do you ride now? A 2008 Street Bob. I bought it just over two years ago. Matt black and chrome – wonderful! How long have you been a Thames Valley member? Almost two years. I have really enjoyed meeting other Harley owners and the ride-outs and rallies are always great fun. I went to school with Mike Connolly, who joined shortly after me, and it was Mike who sort of encouraged me to buy a Harley. Any hobbies apart from motorbikes? I play the guitar and really enjoy watching live music, especially ‘blues’ guitar bands. I play golf, but only when the sun is shining. Oh, and real ale and wine. Any special Harley experiences? Mike and I have had a couple of bike trips to Northern France with some other old school friends which have been great fun. It would be good to travel further into Europe or Scotland when I can find the time. I have not done Thunder in the Glens yet – maybe next year? Nice getting to know you, Ralph, thanks for the chat!

Continued from November issue…

Part Three Paul, Trev, Clive & CJ, four guys with their Harleys, riding from England to Rome for Harley Davidson’s Celebration Rally in Ostia to mark 110 years of making Harley Davidsons. When they had sorted Paul’s bike out we decided to go to the Rally site (whilst Paul (Slippy) & Gill went onto a trip to Rome. Time to say goodbye to them). We rode to the site which was a lot easier now things were wrapping up! We had a great blast along the seafront and one last walk around whilst enjoying our usual mix of laughs and piss-taking and finished off the evening with a few beers. Monday was spent mostly by the pool where Clive and I made a new friend who would not leave us alone! Enough said. That evening, nicely relaxed, we had a real nice meal with quite a Main stage few beers which was seriously unusual. Honest! This is where we agreed our new job titles which are as follows: Doughnut (Paul) Fashion Advisor, Clive, Entertainment Manager, Trev, Planning Manager and my good self - Linguistics Manager. We also agreed we would one day do a Wild Hogs Part 2 Lads Trip, over a weekend with no hotels only canvas or sky, and without any technology e.g. Mobile Phones etc. Tuesday morning we headed for La Spezia in blazing hot temperatures so we had to stop more regular to take on fluids. It was easier to contend with because we rode some of the most beautiful twisty roads and scenery before reaching our destination some 265 miles on. The Hotel had a lovely pool which we obviously took full advantage of and then set off into the local town for food. We settled for some good Italian Pizza and a beer. Wednesday morning saw another scorching day so Clive and I took full advantage again of the hotel pool before loading up the bikes for the next leg of our journey home. This part of the journey would take us across mountains & coastal roads to Genoa and then inland to Mont Blanc which I must confess holds the record for the most expensive tunnel / péage of the entire trip, although I must say, what an experience!

20

We covered yet more beautiful roads with loads of scenery and stopped at some nice cafés on route where I experienced my only technical issue of the entire trip when my bike alarm kept activating. But, well prepared, I produced my code for the bike and disabled it, and we were quickly on our way again. The same thing happened to Trevor’s bike later (being the same model, who would have thought? lol) but all he had to do was move his bike a short distance and the bike was ok. On arrival @ our next hotel we got checked in and was really ready for some food so we ate out in the open in front of the hotel for a change. It was fabulous, we were surrounded by the most spectacular mountain views. This was another ‘pinch yourself’ moment. Thursday morning greeted us with rain so, not so lucky today, we had to put on our wets! We were able to remove them shortly after, and before we rode some fantastic roads through mountains. Then after stopping for dinner we had to put the wets on again. This was for most of the remaining journey to our next Motel. We arrived pretty wet - another drying session of all our gear was called for so we again started hanging them all over the place and on all the available heaters on full blast which did the job in no time. We are clever and a dab hand at looking after our gear now… aren’t you all impressed? After this task was done it was feeding time which must go down as the most unusual place we had eaten on the entire trip! It was at a Truckers stop, but hey, what a menu! Good value for money, good food with a waitress service and help yourself buffet. Friday morning arrived too soon, with an overcast sky. After breakfast we set off along motorways so as to cover the miles we needed to do to catch our train which was an earlier one because we made good time in the days leading up to this point. We all arrived home safe and sound in England after what was an exceptional trip through great countries with a great bunch of guys. Would I do it again? Damn right I would! Would I have changed anything? Yes, of course, because no matter how much good planning you do there is always room for improvement to which we all agreed. However, when you travel with friends who are like minded, and you all understand nothing’s ever perfect, then you have everything to look forward to. The 2,800 miles we covered this trip is a true testament to the planning we all played a part in but in particular, recognition for Paul & Clive who worked out the routes we took and the hotel bookings. Roll on the next trip! Happy & Safe Riding to you all - CJ

21

Whose Bike? Our ‘Jammy’ photographer, Linda, has been taking candid shots of our bikes when we weren’t looking! Do you recognise your bike, or that of another club member? If you correctly identify the bike and owner, you will win a bottle of wine, to be presented at club night. If there’s more than one correct answer, names will be put in a hat and one drawn out - at club night. Good luck!

If you can identify this bike, send your answer to Linda, c/o: editor@thamesvalleyhog.org.uk October’s winner: Sue Dodds

SAFETY BRIEFING FOR NON ROAD CREW Please note that HOG insists that ALL participating riders get a briefing before they ride with an organised group. If you miss the briefing you may not participate in the ride ! Your full attention is required at the briefing. It is an important part of safety for the whole group. Please try not to interrupt unless you have a genuine question. For some crew members, it is the most daunting part of their responsibility. You will hear much of the same information each time but please support your volunteer road crew by being patient. Listen carefully to the overview of the route. Take note of any hazards which may be mentioned. Make sure you understand the DROP-OFF SYSTEM. If not, ask a member of the Road Crew. Identify the LAST MAN / TAIL RIDER at, or during, the briefing. Make sure you know how we operate the staggered file as many Chapters operate this slightly differently. Thames Valley HOG DO NOT change position in the staggered file when a man is dropped off. Riders MUST stay at their drop off point until the last man arrives. Use an arm signal when dropped off to indicate the direction of the route. (Switch off your indicators !) Drop off will be indicated precisely, but only stop precisely at that location if you are happy to do so. Alternatively, stop as close as you can and consider walking back to mark the route. Leave at least 4 seconds gap behind the LEAD rider and 2 seconds between you and the next rider in the formation.

The LEAD RIDER is NOT a part of the staggered formation. He/she will move to different positions in the road depending on what he needs to do next. Do NOT change your position in the stagger behind the leader. Close up at stops and junctions. No overtaking within the group. Please leave 7 -10 second gaps on motorways and dual carriageways between groups of 5 riders. Overtaking other traffic on dual carriageways:- Only pass / overtake when you reach the obstruction. Do not pull out to allow the rider in front to pass. (He/she may not be ready to pass and you will hold up other road users unnecessarily). Every rider MUST fully observe the whole group, NOT just the rider ahead, in order to be alert to changes in speed Use your mirrors frequently. Be courteous to other road users (even if undeserved!) Leaving the group:- Pull over and wait for the last man then signal your intention to leave Missing a drop-off:- In the unlikely event that you miss a dropped marker, or take a wrong road, DON’T PANIC! Continue to a safe point to turn around and go back to pick up the ride at that point. The rest of the ride should follow you and the ride will get back on track. Breakdown procedures:- Last man or his/her marshal will stop and assess your needs. Be aware of other riders joining who are not part of the group. Do not use unauthorised signals. This can confuse following riders. All riders must be aware that… YOU ARE DEEMED TO BE IN CONTROL OF, AND RESPONSIBLE FOR, YOUR VEHICLE AND YOUR RIDING AT ALL TIMES IRRESPECTIVE OF ANY GUIDANCE OR INSTRUCTION FROM ANY MEMBER OF THE ROAD CREW. YOU MUST, AT ALL TIMES, RIDE WITHIN THE LAW AND OBEY ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.
