Hi All and welcome to the July edition of RoadHOG. I’ve just returned from a cracking Hogs in the Hayfields. Great bands, great rideout, great company and to cap it all the weather gods smiled on us with a bubble of decent weather for both rally and rideout. You’ll find various mentions and photos throughout this issue. I know I’ll find them interesting as the Friday night was a bit of a haze. Was this as a result of aging or the fact I’d lost count of the number of pints of Thatchers I’d consumed?

www.greatwesternchapter.uk

Other than our rally and the usual articles keeping you informed of all things chapter there’s not a lot in this issue. This is partly due to the fact that I’ve had only a few days to pull it together before joining ‘Hardarse’, et al on the long awaited GWC European Tour. I can’t wait. So, we’re halfway through the riding season and everyone’s off doing their thing. So this seems like a good time to prompt you all to consider your poor ol’ editor and put finger to keyboard for an article of your adventures to appear in a future edition of your very own Chapter’s RoadHOG emag. Go on, don’t be shy. You know you want to.

Director’s Cut Hi All, Hogs in the Hayfields 9 was another great success with around 180 tickets sold. The weather was very kind to us, given I got drenched going to the rally on Thursday and as soon as we got home on Sunday it’s done nothing but rain. Luckily most of the rain, over the weekend, was during the night, so it was dry for the rideout, Dave Curtis on the patio and the outdoor games. All of this combined with the evening entertainment of the dance-off and the bands helped create a great atmosphere for our event. It was lovely to see Chepstow Mencap and Blood Bikers at the weekend to hand over our charity sponsorship after 2 ½ years with Mencap. Each Charity brings something different, so I look forward to our involvement with Bloodbikers. Over the weekend we raised circa £700 from the silent auction, raffle and Sonja’s patch sewing.

I must also say THANK YOU to Riders of Bristol who supported us over the weekend, by attending our rally, providing raffle prizes and transporting all of our gazebos and stuff to and from the site.

I’m afraid it’s more bad news for poor Phil Blake. Phil and Sue had to canCongratulations to Darlow Lloyd for cel their GWC European trip with winning the egg roulette, beating me ‘Hardarse’ and now Phil has suffered in the final. I’m not ‘eggstatic’ about another small seizure within his 6 that! month off road period, so the off-road Congratulations to Andy Ball for win- period is now a further 12 months, ning the ride-in bike show with a van, which means they also had to cancel because there were no bikes in the their place on P&Y’s Enigma tour. show! we will be forced to look elsewhere, which won’t be easy, because we need a Biker-friendly place central to our membership, a separate room (cost free) large enough to hold us all and ideally serving reasonably priced food. Answers on a postcard to me! Friday the 24th June was the start of the 3 peaks challenge for the intrepid Riders Ramblers, so more to come on that from Duncan, but I know they’re all chuffed with raising over £3,500 for Meningitis. Remember the Committee is representing you, so if you have any ideas or comments to make, good or bad, come and talk with us. Secretary’s Update Hi Everyone! Peter and I are unable to attend the Club nights in July and August at the Cross Hands, as we will be doing a recce for our Enigma Tour in July and we’ll be in the USA in August on a 2,000 mile tour on hired Harleys with a group of friends. We plan on spending some of the time at the 76th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. GWC patches and pins will be available at Club nights as usual, and if you want to order any items of clothing, just contact me.

Genghis presents Keith Swarbrick with his Road Captain certificate and patch

Here is a round-up of our Committee Meeting in June Duncan reported that Riders would soon be launching a brand new website. He was pleased to announce that Riders had achieved a Podium finish in the Isle of Man TT and had come 12th in the Seniors. The team from Riders have exceeded their target for their attempt at the 24 hour Three Peak Challenge in June by raising over £3.5K. Duncan has been liaising with the American Museum in Bath, planning a joint Riders and GWC presence at their 4th July celebrations. Genghis presents Gareth Jones with his Road Captain certificate

Peter had sent out his Treasurer’s report in advance of our meeting. The GWC balances for May were in good order and both branches of Mencap had received donations from the Chapter. We agreed with proposals made by Andy and Mike, for criteria for appointing Road Marshals and Road Captains, to ensure that our rideouts were as safe as possible. Anita thanked Andy and the road crew for the safe rides to and from Benelux and updated us on GWC activities. In particular, our Rally, the G.Y.O.W. ride to the Ride for Life event in aid of our regional Air Ambulance in July and our GWC Christmas Party. I hope to see you all soon, enjoy the summer and ride safe. Yvonne Secretary Email: secretary@greatwesternchapter.uk Home: 01225 751017

Charity Update I’m back!!! I’m sure you have all missed my musings in May and June and are keen as mustard to get the answers to May’s coffee corner! I hope all of you that joined us at the HITH 2016 Rally are recovered and enjoying your great memories of the weekend!

What a great weekend it was – Glam Rock costumes and dancing; raffles, rideout and auction; egg roulette and 4-person sack racing and the first ever ride in competition for camper vans! Well done to our very own Josh Oswald who took 3rd place with his very fine motorhome! The Charity activity was a great success, thanks to everyone putting their hands deep in their pockets and parting with their hard earned cash. The auction raised £207.50, the raffle, after expenses, another £367.30 with sales of some dodgy H-D jewelry from the back of my car (courtesy of Alan Evans aka ‘Blood Bike Bloke’) adding another £100 and finally the lovely Sonja’s sewing raised another £103. So in total this starts the Freewheelers fundraising with £777.80

ry, which trashed the hilltop castle. The ruins were purchased by the Mayor in the early 20th century and a series of elaborate plans (non of which ever came to fruition) were drawn up to create a great edifice.

Pete & Duncan’s Pump Stop Hi Everyone and greetings from Portoroẑ in Slovenia, the location for the 2016 European H.O.G rally. I guess that, like us, most of you have not had the opportunity to visit this small country, roughly the size of Wales and with just one city, Ljubljana its capital.

Close by to Bled is a gorge, through which a river pounds its way. There is even a wooden walkway, precariously fixed to the walls of the gorge, with the water rushing under your feet.

If we had at least a couple of spare weeks, we would have ridden down to Slovenia instead of taking a cheap flight from Bristol to Venice and then driving the 160 km to the Slovenian border. For the inward journey from Venice, we deliberately avoided the autostradas and, once over the border, we followed the spectacular mountain road (loads of twisties, which would have been great on two wheels), eventually dropping down to Lake Bled. Talk about picture postcard with clear green lake, an island with a church and a castle perched on a rocky promontory above and the That was quite an experience! lake shore ringed with splendid villas. From Bled, we were onwards to Ljubljana, which presents a mix of stylish old buildings in the historical quarter, many new affluent properties in the suburbs, yet peppered with austere communist era tower blocks (just like 60s Britain). The city has been hit by several major earthquakes, in its history, one in the 16th centu-

12

Finally, in the 1980s, a competition was held to design a “new” castle that would become a cultural centre for the city. What they achieved was quite remarkable, not a pastiche but a timeless elegant complex. This includes a brilliant hands-on Museum of Puppetry and a Museum of Slovenian Life, which illustrates its turbulent history through to its modern success, achieved through hard work and outward looking confidence in itself. At one stage, they did have a motorcycle company, Tomas Colibri, which made amongst other machines, this 1957 VS50K moped., which was displayed in the museum.

(Continued on page 13)

Apparently, this satisfied the consumer demand of the time! Today, while Slovenia does not make bikes, it is well known internationally for Akrapovič, a company that makes high-end post market chromed stainless steel and titanium pipes. I have them on my CVO – they give out a really gorgeous sound and they are actually street-legal throughout Europe. Next stop, was Portoroẑ and the rally. We thought Cascais, in Portugal, had been a good location, but Portoroẑ was brilliant with the rally occupying the entire main street alongside the sea. It is amazing that Slovenia has just a tiny coastline with the Adriatic Sea (around 20 miles), with Portoroẑ roughly in the middle. Otherwise, it is completely surrounded by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

Our overall impression of the rally was that it was very well organised and, although there were the usual rip -off prices for the official merchandise (e.g. 10 € for just a patch or a pin), the Harley Dealer stores from Slovakia and Italy had plenty of decent stuff on sale as did the non-H-D merchants in the shopping village. Even the bands weren't bad – allegedly, as mostly we didn't stay around to listen to them.

important, which means that having the right luggage is a must. The Harley Davidson touring luggage range is vast and has many options; some are even made to look at home in the swishest of hotels. They are also designed with various features, including integrated rain covers, glovefriendly zipper pulls, Scotchlite reflective trim and quick release mounting straps, all helping to make the luggage user friendly, secure and safe.

Slovenia is a lovely country and the people are so friendly and polite, with many having nigh on perfect fluency in English. One interesting observation was the price of fuel is considerably less in Slovenia, so there were daily forages by Italians zipping over the border, just to fill up!

Why not come and see the wide range we have in stock and don’t worry about spending too much money before you go away - use our new 0% finance scheme so you can get the luggage you need and still have plenty of beer money to go with on your long-awaited trip.

So, what’s our tip of the month?

Safe Riding.

Now that the holiday season is here, being able to pack all the right gear is

Peter and Duncan@riders

There were a few UK riders there from 1066, the Hatters, Chelsea & Fulham Chapters, but it was really dominated by Italians, French, Austrians, Germans. There were well over a thousand bikes so, all lined up, they were an impressive sight – very like Sturgis. As always, there were some blindingly good custom bikes to be seen. Everyone was really relaxed and chilled out and the rideout, along a highly scenic route down into Croatia, was well supported.
