“The Village” - A.D White Sculpture Cast Museum & Research Center ARCH 2102: Comprehensive Design Location : Ithaca, NY Team: Thanh Nguyen, Kate Chen, Reuben Chen Located on a hilltop overlooking Bebe Lake, shared by the Fuertes Observatory, the sculpture cast research center houses numerous casts from the Cornell A.D White collection, as well as research and restoration facitlities. Each of these programs are assigned an individual volume, whose design responds to its individual need. The museum is also a play between indoor and outdoor, between positive and negative space. Each required indoor program is paired with an outdoor public program, as their designs influence each other. The angles and rotation of the museum’s volumes articulate this duality between its 2 anchors: the observatory and the walking trail. 2

Ground Plan and Roof Plan

The negative space of the museum creates an amphitheater, a small outdoor cinema, a vegetable garden, courtyards as well as seating area for a food truck. Circulation through the building is created by linking each volume’s individual circulation. 6

Through fenestration, the outside world is brought into the museum’s volumes. Punctuation that creates mini interior courtyards, or shearing the garden into the office are some examples of how the idea of inside-outside, negative positive is articulated throughout the building. The use of white concrete and glass is the unifying elements of these distinctive volumes. 12
