Colorado’s Premier guide to hemp culture

A letter to our readers What does it mean to be a hemp connoisseur? The dictionary defines the word connoisseur as “a person of informed and discriminating taste.” It sounds pretentious doesn’t it? Well the THC team is anything but that. We are passionate about industrial hemp and cannabis, and what’s not to be passionate about? Medical cannabis has done wonders for a countless number of people across the world. Legal states have created thousands of jobs in the middle of an economic recession and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the pioneers who are paving the way for mass acceptance of medical cannabis.

Director of Sales and Marketing Then there is hemp; poor, poor hemp. Throughout history it has proved by far to be the most useful natural fiber known to man. It’s a super food, a natural fuel alternative, and can help save our environment, but it still gets no love. The benefits of industrial hemp usage are so vast that we haven’t even scratched the surface, yet it is still illegal to grow in the United States. Hemp, it seems, is guilty of being too useful. Too many corporations worry about the shift of “power to the people” that the manufacturing of hemp can (and will) create. So now that you know where we stand, welcome to The Hemp Connoisseur. We hope you enjoy our cover story on Hoodlamb (page 30). What better company to feature in our premiere issue than one that believes so much in what we are doing here in Colorado, that they uprooted from Amsterdam to come here? When a lot of hemp companies are afraid to show support for cannabis, Hoodlamb holds no bars. Please take the time to read through our business guide. We only list the medical cannabis businesses that operate at the highest level of professionalism. These people take pride in their medicine, and most importantly, the patients that they help daily. For all of you new patients, be sure to check out our “Know Your Dose” article (page 24). It’s our way of starting an ongoing conversation about the importance of how to best medicate for your individual needs. The entire team here would like to thank you for picking up The Hemp Connoisseur. THC is our baby, but as they say, “it takes a village to raise a child.” While we have a lot to say, we know you do too. If you are as passionate as we are, we want to hear from you. What do you want to learn about? Whether it’s a hemp or cannabis topic, we want to always be informative, useful, and entertaining. We would also like to give a huge thank you to all of our contributors, advertisers, and MMJ businesses. You are all true pioneers, and are paving the road to mass acceptance for both of these amazing plants. It may be bumpy, but we are ready to travel with you down that road with our hemp shoes on. Respectfully, The THC Team

Roundtable

What do you think about the impact of potentially legalizing marijuana in Colorado? Mitch Woolhiser of Northern Lights I tend to think that, overall, legalization will be bad for business in the MMJ field. I fear it would lead to a rushing in of bigger players and that would drive the price down. At the same time, I have to allow my loathing of the prohibition law to override that unease. Still, legalization might drive out some of the smaller operators, and everybody is worried that tobacco companies would rush in. That’s why [a similar initiative] failed in California—the growers rallied against it.

Janene Nachtsheim of Mother Nature’s Miracle I think it would be a good thing and I’m hoping it happens. That being said, I’m afraid of what will happen to dispensaries. It’s not really clear who would be able to sell it and if big cigarette companies would be able to come into the market. Dispensary owners have all been through background checks and done what we’re supposed to, and I think everyone should have to go through dispensaries to obtain the marijuana.

Ed Kieta of Alternative Wellness Center I look at it from two perspectives. I don’t want a push for full legalization to give the impression that cannabis is not a valid medicine. I know that some people look at the medical legalization of cannabis as a cursory step toward full legalization, but in my opinion, it’s the safest and most effective medicine on the planet. My sister passed away from alcoholism, so the other side of it for me is that cannabis makes for a safer recreational drug and social lubricant. Many of the current drugs of choice, like alcohol, have a very negative impact on society, when you take into account factors like domestic violence and auto accidents. I think it would be good to have an alternative recreational drug of choice, but again, I don’t want to underplay the effectiveness of cannabis as a medicine.

Kelly Moore of Flower of Life I think legalization is inevitable, given the amount of momentum and education developing around cannabis. We’re all for it. My business is positioned to help patients even in an environment of full legalization—the patients we serve aren’t going to go to the liquor store to pick up their cannabis. From where I sit, this movement is really about taking our health and well-being into our own hands and we need guidance to do that.

Brian Vicente of Sensible Colorado (co-author of the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act of 2012) We consulted with many medical marijuana business owners and advocates when drafting the Regulate Act and we think it provides them new opportunities. All medical marijuana laws will remain intact when this passes. We’re just establishing a new licensing system that these guys can opt into. They’d be able to sell to a much bigger market, much like a liquor store. Several provisions benefit existing businesses. For instance, we’re setting up a whole new licensing system and preexisting businesses will get preferential treatment. They can also apply for the retail license for $500. Non-licensed folks will be spending significantly more. I’ve heard people express fears that big tobacco or big pharmaceutical will try to step in, but that hasn’t happened with medical marijuana, even though it’s a $200 million-a-year business. There will likely be residency requirements that will keep giant corporations from coming in. I think citizens will be leading the charge.

Medical Marijuana Helped Me THC sat down with a few Colorado residents to see how MMJ was helping them cope with pain and improve their quality of life. This is what they had to share with us. While attending school on an Air Force base, I wrote a paper about the benefits of medical marijuana, never thinking that I would need cannabis myself as a patient. However, in November 2009, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the lining of the large intestine (colon). Three months later, I was let go from my job, thus losing my medical insurance. Without health insurance, the cost of my pharmaceutical medication skyrocketed to $658 per month, which was more than the mortgage on my condo. Luckily, I was able to receive a year’s worth of pharmaceuticals because of my unemployment status. However, the medicine I take results in loss of appetite; I do not feel hunger pangs and I have alarms set to remind myself to eat if I haven’t already. That is one reason I turned to medical marijuana. I was fortunate enough to find out about MMAPA (Medical Marijuana Assistance Program of America). I had never been in a low-

income situation before, but the loss of my job combined with mounting medical bills affected my financial situation quickly, and they were there to help. Cannabis now helps me stimulate my desire to eat, and the financial assistance through MMAPA makes the medicine affordable. I am indebted to them for their help during my battle with a painful, incurable disease. —D.B., Colorado I had bone cancer back in 1993—before medical marijuana was legal. I was 16 at the time. Personally, I didn’t use marijuana, but I had a friend going through cancer treatment with me and he would smoke marijuana on top of the parking garage of the hospital. I worked for Boulder Medical Center Oncology in 2001, and that was when there was a huge push for legalization of medical marijuana for pain treatment and other symptoms. I do use medical marijuana now for bad joints as well as golfer’s elbow and pseudo-gout. When I first put a salve on my joints, it worked amazingly well.

MMJ has also helped members of my family. My uncle passed away in 2008 and he had pancreatic cancer. He used medical marijuana as one of his treatments for pain relief. I think it really changed his quality of life, and lengthened his life. He was given two months to live and passed away after eight. When I talk to centers, I ask them what sort of edibles patients are using to find out what strains are the most effective for various symptoms. I know, for example, there is a strain that helps with sleep issues. For a long time I couldn’t sleep, but there was an edible that really helped me. My father-in-law used a salve too. He was totally against it until he realized how powerful it could be. It’s been amazing to see him do a 180. When you get over the stigma, you realize medical marijuana is not just for the high—it’s a legitimate medical treatment. —Mandy Martin, Cancer Survivor Longmont, CO

Getting the Best out of the Bud Growing up, I was only privy to two methods of extracting THC. One involved crumbling a sandwich baggie of ditch weed into a pan of simmering butter which then went into a package of brownie mix. The other came in the form of some CannaBeer my friend Conrad made. While fat and alcohol extraction are indeed viable methods, it turns out THC can be extracted from the mighty marijuana plant in a whole myriad of interesting and more efficient ways. Take, for instance, something called water extraction. According to Nikka T, of Pink House Blooms, water extraction is a method he learned in his native Northern California and refined studying in Amsterdam. “The water extraction method that I’ve devised over the last 10 years is a combination of different methods and techniques from hash-makers around the world. It’s similar to bubble hash in that we use a series of silk screen separation bags, but our final product is of superior quality than the ‘bubble hash’ patients are used to seeing.” T says that the reason he uses water, is so he doesn’t have to use any chemical solvents. “Water is used as a vessel to mechanically separate

16

the trichome heads from the stalks and the rest of the plant matter” He likens his progression with extraction to his time spent behind the turntables as a DJ. “To me, it’s just like DJing. I feel like I can always get better. There are always things I can do dial it to a specific patient’s need. And there are new strains and genetics being created every day. I’ll run Sour Diesel trim differently than I run Grape Ape trim—there’s always more learning to do.” —Lionel Green

Oral Relief Dixie Scrips A.M. Focus

I popped one of these pills before a screening of Drive, fully expecting the movie to blow my mind. Imagine my surprise when the THC in this little pill (presumably aided by the herbs eleuthero and ashwagandha) opened up a portal into my emotional core that the film bore straight to the center of, to the point that every time I listen to the soundtrack, I’m transported back to the darkness of the theater. These pills promise “increased focus, for early daytime use without any drowsy side effects.” That description hits the mark, but unless you’re an ingestion vet, I recommend finding a way to split this lovely little capsule in half.

Julie & Kate Baked Goods Flo Granola

It’s hard to beat a top quality granola made with organic ingredients that also packs the punch of THC. The dividends come through in the taste and, a short while later, in the balanced medicinal effects. With the Flo granola, the sativa (60percent of the blend) kicks in first, giving a mellow but invigorating sense of well-being. A few hours down the lovely road, the indica walks in front, giving your body a chance to unwind.

Standing Akimbo Bubble Brownie

Hats off to Standing Akimbo for making a large and delicious brownie that you can finish half of without putting yourself in the old brain box for 10 hours. Weighing in with 72mg of active THC, the Bubble Brownie, roughly the size of a slice of bread, is nicely restrained and twice as delicious. Upon testing, the high seemed mellow and increased my pingpong skills exponentially.

Gaia’s Garden

After a quarter of a Patty’s Peppermint, Seinfeld reruns had never been more insightful and hilarious. After the TV went off, however, the meds really went on, and I got sweaty palmed thinking about the next day’s big tasks (going shopping and cooking dinner for family). I switched gears by imagining running through some piles of leaves in the yard and soon was asleep. Then I woke at about 4am, when the meds seemed to be peaking. Seems the only real problem with the fruits of Gaia’s Garden are that they are so damn tasty—their Mac Daddy Blues are some of the best nut cups around, period—that it’s difficult to regulate your dosage with willpower alone. —Lionel Green

CannaScience Know Your Dose: Part one Medical marijuana has about as many applications as it does delivery systems, but it’s crucial to remember that if you’re not giving yourself the right dose, you could be setting yourself up for an underwhelming or extremely overwhelming experience— especially when ingesting. With that in mind, we bring you Know Your Dose—a two-part conversation with experts in the medical marijuana field that will help you approach your medicine with more savvy and safety. It’s part of a broader section of the magazine, called CannaScience, that will explore the technical aspects of medical marijuana. “For somebody who’s never tried pot and someone who is a daily user, it’s a totally different story,” Julie Dooley says. One half of Julie & Kate Baked Goods, famous for their line of infused granola, Dooley urges potential patients to consider, along with the ailment they are seeking to alleviate,

18

their set and setting. The former refers to a person’s values, attitudes, experiences, and personality; setting is the user’s physical and social circumstances. “Where are you in your life? Are you in a home, do you have family around, are your finances in order? These are important things to consider,” Dooley says. “Also, how intense do you want your euphoric effects? If you eat 35-50mgs of THC, you’re probably going to be stoned all day. Then again, I talk to chronic users who smoke over 600mgs daily who say they can’t get high off of an edible.” Dooley recommends that everyone start with a lower dose when trying out edibles, between five and 10mg. Then, it’s important to wait 90 minutes for the medicine to kick in. The THC in edibles is processed by your liver, and it can take some time for the effects to kick in. After that window, it’s safe to eat another five to 10mg.

“It also helps to eat a fatty food before you eat the edible,” Dooley says. “The fat helps facilitate and intensify the effect. Conversely, if you want to flush the medicine from your system, don’t eat anything fatty. Eat carrots and celery and drink hot tea and water. Sugar also moves THC out of your system.” Equally important as the amount of THC you consume is the strain. Someone suffering from anxiety will likely not do well with a strong sativa, but might find relief in an indica strain. And, of course, the ability to know just how much THC—and for that matter, how much Cannabidiol and Cannabinol (something we’ll be discussing in future issues)—you’re getting in an edible requires laboratory testing. According to Co-Owner Genifer Murray of Cann Labs, “You’re not going to get the proper dosage unless the edible is tested, and I’m not just saying that because I own a laboratory. Companies need to test every single batch.

Purveyors need to test the hash oil and butter and then also test the end product. When you take a Vicodin, you know exactly how much medication you’re getting, and it should be the same with medical marijuana.” “For instance, I just found my perfect dosage for an edible is 20mg,” Murray continues. “I was able to learn this because my chemist exact-dosed an edible with that amount, and it was perfect for me—as far as being able to function and not fall asleep.” Murray also notes that testing is important because different patients use the medicine to different ends. “If it’s a cancer patient, maybe they need it tonight to sleep and they need it tomorrow because they need to eat. We all know marijuana is a great recreational drug, but people need to understand that it’s a medicine and they need to understand dosage.” —Lionel Green

Holistic Health

Heralding the possibilities of Five Element Acupuncture Joni Jackon, Owner of Inner Phoenix Acupuncture in Colorado, has long been an advocate of holistic health. We caught up with her to talk about a body stress treatment known at Five Element Acupuncture, which she practices with clients at her studio. Many of those same clients use medical marijuana, but have reached out to her to round out their treatment regimen.

What are the underlying goals of Five Element Acupuncture?

Who is this type of acupuncture intended to treat?

Is it often used in conjunction with other treatments?

The underlying goal of Worsley Five Element Acupuncture (WFEA) is to work with natural law to restore balance and harmony within a person so that any symptoms they are troubled by will subside and they will return to health. Worsley Five Element Acupuncture does this in a unique and effective way by diagnosing and treating the underlying cause of disease which is referred to as the Causative Factor (CF). In other words, the CF is the root cause of symptoms of disease whether it comes from body, mind, or spirit.

In ancient times, acupuncture was used to prevent illness or disease. This theory holds true today, as many people who feel fine benefit from WFEA and find that they have more energy, can think more clearly, or feel more like themselves. That said, the world we live in today is a very different world than it was in ancient times. The main causes of disease today are different from the main causes of disease in the distant past. Still, acupuncture is very effective for many conditions people struggle with today, especially many of the chronic conditions that Western medicine often looks at managing rather than resolving. WFEA is truly a holistic approach, so anyone with any symptom—physical, mental, or emotional—can benefit from WFEA.

Yes, depending on what those therapies are. Any caring professional health care provider should respect a client’s choice as to how they address their health. At the same time, it is often recommended that a client not receive different therapies or treatments too close together, depending on what those therapies are.

In addition, as the owner of Inner Phoenix Acupuncture, LLC, I work with a person rather on a person. I follow the Laws of Healing, honoring nature as the true healer and myself as an instrument of nature to facilitate healing. I educate a client on how acupuncture works and what the client can do for themselves to attain their desired goals. WFEA treatment works best when there is a partnership between the practitioner and the client. I have the utmost respect for where a client is in their life, how they got there, and where they desire to go. When performed in this manner, the results a person experiences are more effective and long-lasting.

Dr. J’s Hash Infusion turns potential waste into amazing taste

A simple enough idea, and certainly a smart one, but a notion that’s often left in the backseat. Not so at Dr. J’s Hash Infused Edibles. Keeper of the state’s first official license for a medical marijuana business, Dr. J’s has honed a unique and incredibly sensible modus operandi. Partnering with dispensaries, Dr. J’s consolidates the trim from plants, turns it into hash, splitting the consolidated, infused product with the center at a prearranged contracted percentage. Then Dr. J’s creates hash-infused-edibles with the percentage they keep.

Small and potent is our claim to fame.”—Tom Sterlacci

the ever-popular Chocolate Buzz Buttons (a demure little chocolate brownie muffin) or a Lemon Poppyseed Magic Muffin into your mouth, and 125mg of pure, quality medicine is on its way.

All of the treats are made in-house from scratch using natural ingredients. The same TLC extends to the hash, which is procured using methods honed over the past decade. What began in Amsterdam, learned under the leading hash makers in that city, has become a streamlined, safe method that Dr. J’s keeps as a trade secret.

“It’s vertical integration,” Owner Tom Sterlacci “We’ve refined our process to get the says of Dr. J’s Premium Gold Partnership, absolute highest quality hash,” Sterlacci says. Courtesy Dr. J’s Hash Infusions “and it creates a symbiotic relationship “We don’t believe in dangerous things like with the centers. The trim they give us jumps in value can take to the bank.” approximately 400-percent and they get a high return because we also offer them a discount on our edibles—edibles made from their own plants. The That professionalism extends to all aspects of Dr. J’s business—”We’re MMCs we work with absolutely love being able to offer their patients buds, the poster child for Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division compliance,” hash, and edibles that feature their own meticulously grown medicine.” Sterlacci notes—contributing to the company’s staggering growth rate. And part of that growth includes a new line of chocolates called Star Barz— In a nutshell: what essentially could have been waste becomes profit, in the adding to the already famous and much loved line of Hash Handies. form of premium hash and some tiny but seriously powerful baked goods. “Like our other products, these will offer the highest dosage in the market,” “Small and potent is our claim to fame,” Sterlacci says. Potent indeed—each Sterlacci says. And like those other products, potency, professionalism, two-pack of Dr. J’s edibles packs 250mg of hash infusion. Just one example of the influential (and ingenious) role of hemp in American history, the Battle of the Hemp Bales marks a time when hemp farming was not only allowed in the young United States, but encouraged. The illustrious history of hemp goes back thousands of years, however, and was integral to the well-being of civilizations long before our founding fathers gained notoriety. Beginning life as the fibrous backbone to linens and a key source of nutrition in the Far East, hemp’s original uses were practical. Regular application in clothing production and diet continued until, just before the turn of the Common Era calendars, a Roman surgeon by the name of Dioscorides experimented with the leaves of the hemp plant (now known as cannabis) and found they held some medicinal properties— purportedly as pain medication. Still, hemp was by far and away more valuable to societies as an ingredient in fabrication. It wasn’t until the 20th century in the West—not long after opium’s reign ebbed in the East—that the plant cannabis sativa (so named by the Dioscorides) was found to harbor intoxicating properties if imbibed correctly.

Slowly, the growth of hemp fell out of sight in the United States. Though its history boasted usage in everything from medicinal hemp oil to car bodies, the confusion with marijuana was too great. Government incentives to grow the plant disappeared, replaced with subsidies for plastics. By 1957, hemp had seen its last legal crop grown on U.S. soil in the 20th century.

According to Leno, hemp legalization has had bipartisan support in the California state legislature for several years. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed one of Leno’s bills while still in office, however, and newly elected Governor Terry Brown vetoed a newer bill on the grounds that it countered federal mandate as outlined in the Act of 1970.

These days, hemp survives in almost every country but the United States as a viable— and critical—crop for industry, medicine, nutrition, and construction. By 2009, the U.K. had completed construction of the Renewable House, built in part from hempbased materials. Even today, the European Union (EU) continues to use hemp for animal bedding, and hemp fabric is used the world-

For Leno, however, the issue is education and awareness. “There would be no reason for the federal government to become involved because there would be no interstate commerce,” he explains. “The seeds for hemp growth are already here. We also have a court case which we believe stated Congress knowingly exempted industrial hemp from The Control Substances Act of 1970 because it’s not a drug.”

These days, hemp survives in almost every country but the United States as a viable—and critical—crop for industry, medicine, nutrition, and construction.

Still, hemp was a product of industry. During WWII, the U.S. government subsidized the growth of hemp under the banner of “Hemp for Victory”—an appeal to domestic farmers to grow hemp for the production of industrial fibers used to make rope, cloth, cordage, and other products vital to the war effort. By the 1950s, hemp was beginning to be confused with marijuana—both classified as the cannabis plant, but grown quite differently. Hemp’s uses come largely from seeds and stalks, whereas marijuana utilizes the flowers of the plant. Myths about hemp’s potential use as a drug abounded in the mid-20th century, but science has always shown hemp to be exceptionally low in tetrahydrocannabinols (THC), the chemical product rife in cannabis flowers that provides the “high” associated with marijuana.

over for clothing of all kinds. There is even jewelry made from processed hemp. So why does the ban on hemp farming in the U.S. persist? In short: perception. According to Senator Mark Leno of California (D, District 3), the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 began a deep-seeded aversion to hemp. Often confused with marijuana—which was dubbed an illegal substance in 1970—hemp has had a hard time making a positive name for itself in the last four decades. Senator Leno has been working on legalizing hemp as viable crop for farmers since 2004. “I’ve long been fascinated with the marvels of industrial hemp, and how ridiculous it is that we import the crop, use it to make thousands of legal products, but deny farmers the ability to grow it,” he says.

Several statewide agencies and organizations in California have come out against Leno’s legislation, arguing that regulating the production of the crop would be too much of a tax on law enforcement. According to Leno, “Two groups in California are against the legalization of hemp and have run misinformation campaigns—the California Police Chiefs Association and the California Narcotics Officers Association.” Both claim that, should hemp be legalized, law enforcement wouldn’t be able to differentiate between fields of hemp and marijuana, making it exceptionally difficult to crack down on the growth of one crop while allowing cultivation of the other. Here in Colorado, the fight for legalization of hemp farming has been going on since the 1990s. In 1995, a bill was introduced and failed in committee that proposed virtually the same thing as Senator Leno’s California bill. It read: “... The development and use of hemp is in the best interest of the state economy and ... the production of hemp and hemp products can be regulated so as not to interfere with the strict control of controlled substances in the state.” Fear of federal crackdown, however,

left the bill without adequate support and it died in the Agricultural Committee. More recently, the Colorado legislature has been focused on the legalization of medical marijuana. In 2005, that legislation passed, leading to the explosion of the medical marijuana industry in the state. Hemp farming, however, is still illegal. But that doesn’t mean imported hemp isn’t key to several industries in Colorado. Of the more prominent—and established—hemp companies in the state is EnviroTextiles, the brainchild of Summer Star Haeske. This year marks 10 years for the business. “A lot of people in all walks of life are enjoying these

hemp will be used for self defense during military advances, it is obvious that it feeds a growing industry in the U.S., rife with legal and legislative frustrations. Despite these obstacles, history has shown repeatedly how much hemp can do and how vital its role is—from clothing fabrication to nutrition. It would seem it’s only a matter of time before hemp farming gains a foothold in the United States, pushing the hemp industry further into spotlight, and expanding hemp culture. Some progress has already been made—in 1995, by executive order, President Clinton designated hemp as a strategic crop of importance to national security. In 2005, a bill was introduced in Congress that would allow states to regulate hemp farming, though no further

It stands to reasons: hemp fabric breathes well, making it ideal for clothing, while its innate antibacterial and antifungal properties make it perfect for body care products like soap and moisturizers. But EnviroTextiles is not the only Colorado company making a profit on hemp products. Among them are The Good Dog Company (offering high-quality hemp leashes, collars, and other canine-friendly products), Living By Design (a window manufacturer), and Red Barn Cloth Diapers—just a smattering of the possible profitable businesses with hemp as their foundation. While the Battle of Hemp Bales marks the first and, perhaps, only time in history when

action was taken on the bill. In 2007—perhaps the most positive movement yet towards the legalization of hemp farming in the U.S.—the first hemp licenses in 50 years were granted to two North Dakota farmers. But there is still much work to be done. The next steps must broaden educational efforts and encourage grassroots participation in the legislative process that has long misrepresented hemp as the intoxicating brother to medical marijuana. “Hemp is a sustainable product,” Haeske explains. “It comes from the earth and goes back to the earth without the use of herbicides, pesticides, high water usage, or harmful processing.” Why wouldn’t we to take advantage of it?

Why Cannabis?

A look into the historical and political role of hemp and medical marijuana

by Dr. Alan Shackelford, M.D.

28

The cannabis plant is native to almost all climate zones, from Siberia to southern Africa, and is thought to exist in three varieties: cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. Each variety has distinct characteristics. Cannabis sativa can grow to be very tall and tree-like, while cannabis indica is usually short and bushy. Ruderalis is generally spindly and short, and has largely been ignored in both practical use and as the object of scientific study, though with the increased interest in both medical and industrial uses of cannabis, this is changing. Humans have used cannabis for thousands of years for a variety of purposes. Hemp fibers are thought to have been fashioned into rope, twine, and cloth as far back as 10,000 years ago and perhaps much longer, and were probably the source of the first paper made in China more than 2,000 years ago. Human interaction with cannabis is probably much older, however. Some scientists have even speculated that cannabis and humans—as well as other animals—have co-evolved, because all vertebrates, including mammals, birds, fish and reptiles, have receptors for and produce substances known as endocannabinoids that are similar to compounds found in the cannabis plant. Discovered only in the late 1980s, the endocannabinoid system is one of a number of systems that helps maintain balance, or homeostasis, in most body functions and systems. Because the endocannabinoid system is so vitally important, it has been the subject of hundreds of research studies conducted around the world in recent years. The medical uses of cannabis are many, and include the treatment of many kinds of pain, nausea, muscle spasms, and seizures, among other conditions. Excellent studies, conducted largely outside the U.S., indicate that cannabis may also treat PTSD, Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions. Studies conducted at the National Institutes of Health in the late 1990s showed that substances found in cannabis are such powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that they might prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. In fact, a patent for the use of certain cannabinoids to prevent damage to the central nervous system by strokes or mechanical trauma was issued to the Department of Health and Human Services in 2003. Evidence is also mounting that THC and some of the other 108 physiologically active cannabinoids may also kill cancer cells. In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 1975, researchers showed that THC and cannabidiol, or CBD, could kill the cells of certain tumors and reduce their size. Unfortunately, this astonishing

work was lost or suppressed, and follow-up studies have only recently shown that compounds found in cannabis are capable of killing the cells of a number of different cancers, including breast, prostate, pancreatic, colon, melanoma, certain lymphomas, and brain tumors. But the cannabis story isn’t just about medical uses. As noted above, cannabis has played an extremely important role in human societies for more than 10,000 years, including the United States. Hemp was first planted in what is today Nova Scotia in 1606 by the French botanist Louis Hebert and by British colonists in Virginia in 1611. By 1619, the Jamestown colony made it illegal not to grow hemp, and Massachusetts and Connecticut passed similar legislation in 1631 and 1632. So much emphasis was placed on hemp because it had many industrial and nutritional uses. Hemp seeds are a source of high-grade fatty acids, including omega-3, and is also very high in protein. Hemp fibers were used to make paper—Benjamin Franklin grew hemp to make newsprint for his newspaper so he would no longer be dependent on imports from Britain—and hemp fiber was processed into a great many industrial products, including cloth for sails, clothing, and rope. But because processing hemp was labor-intensive, cheaper alternatives began to replace hemp until new processing equipment was introduced in 1917, and hemp began to make something of a comeback. During World War II, American farmers cultivated hundreds of thousands of acres of hemp, but after 1945, hemp production was sharply curtailed and the last legal American hemp crop was harvested in the late 1950s. However, as many as 30 other countries have recognized the many proven and potential uses of hemp and allowed its cultivation. Estimates are that as many as 50,000 different products can be made from hemp, including building materials, cloth, nutritional products, automobile parts, biofuels, and many others. Hemp cultivation could revitalize American agriculture, and some 16 states have passed legislation authorizing either industrial hemp cultivation or research into its potential benefits. Nonetheless, none have begun cultivation to date because the Drug Enforcement Administration has threatened to intervene and sanction, arrest, and/ or prosecute farmers who try to grow industrial hemp. The problem, of course, is that industrial hemp, which has a THC content of less than 1-percent and is incapable of causing a “high” in any easily consumed amounts, remains federally illegal. Just across the border in Canada, however, farmers are cultivating industrial hemp under a program of strict supervision and monitoring. Indeed, many of the hemp products sold in the United States come from Canada. A similar program could be implemented in this country, with the profits going to American farmers and hemp processors. Additionally, concerted action to inform the public and political leaders of the many benefits of medical cannabis has resulted in 16 states and Washington D.C. enacting medical marijuana legislation, despite the continued federal illegality of medical marijuana. It’s time for similar efforts to be made on behalf of American farmers and consumers, whose livelihoods and product choices would be greatly improved by legalizing the growing and processing of industrial hemp in this country. It’s time to drag the U.S. into the 18th century, at least as far as cannabis is concerned.

Cannabis King Adam Dunn of HoodLamb sets up shop in Denver by Josh Tyson

Many years ago, as a teenager growing up in upstate New York, Adam Dunn made himself a license to get high—a photo ID he laminated and carried around in his wallet. It was a symbolic gesture by someone who felt he had a fundamental right to use marijuana. When he was 19, the license went with him all the way to Amsterdam, where his ideas and ambitions surrounding cannabis and hemp steadily flowered into three successful businesses: T.H. Seeds, a marijuana seed distributor; Hemp Works, a retailer of all things hemp; and HoodLamb, an apparel company specializing in durable, fashionable products made with hemp. But things soured somewhat in Amsterdam over the past four years. Once considered a stoner Mecca, the city’s inconsistent handling of its tolerance policy toward marijuana, combined 30

with new legislation, was making it increasingly difficult to operate there, so Dunn moved operations to the most marijuana-friendly city he could find: Denver. “I think Colorado has the best shot of making medical marijuana work because it’s regulated and people are taking it seriously as an industry,” he says, sitting back in a chair at Hoodlab, the showroom and art gallery he runs with his wife, CiCi. Located at the south end of the Santa Fe Arts District. HoodLamb jackets are a pot aficionado’s dream come true: warm, comfortable coats with a faux fur lining made from hemp and recycled plastics, plenty of pockets (many of them hidden), and a rolling paper dispenser inside the front breast. They’ve quickly become the stuff of legend among those in the know— including Woody Harrelson, Michael Franti,

Tommy Chong, and Snoop Dogg, who was the first to request one of their classic parkas with a bulletproof lining. Another of the bulletproof parkas (which are custom made) was donated to Paul Watson, captain of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the group responsible for aggressively impeding the whaling efforts of the Japanese. In 2008, Watson was allegedly fired upon by a Japanese whaling boat as he and his crew were trying to prevent the ship from hunting whales off the coast of Antarctica. Watson’s efforts— including the firing incident—are chronicled on the Discovery Channel hit Whale Wars, and while plenty of companies have spent thousands of dollars to get their products shown on the program, HoodLamb has been able to get their logo front and center by simply donating their gear to clothe the men and women aboard the Sea Shepherd fleet.

“We’re totally dependent on donations,” crew member Lincoln Shaw says, speaking from a dive show at the Denver Convention Center. “We use all of the money people send us to buy fuel for our ships and all of the food we eat on our journeys is donated. Having the HoodLamb coats is definitely appreciated.” For his part, Dunn describes the partnership with Sea Shepherd as more of a friendship than a business venture. “We’re both committed to similar ideals,” CiCi says. “We use our abilities and influence to improve the world.” Where HoodLamb is concerned, hemp is the keystone to those efforts. Easy to grow with minimal resources, hemp is one of the most versatile—if not the most versatile—plant known to man. Currently, HoodLamb products are made in a factory in China that’s

in the same valley where the hemp is grown that goes into the fabric. Dunn would love to bring the operation to the U.S., but can’t because growing hemp is illegal here.

the wash. I don’t want someone buying one of our hoodies and then throwing it out because it fades after one wash. That’s not helping the environment either.”

While having their production headquartered abroad isn’t ideal, Dunn finds balance in the fact that they are able to make their products with a smaller impact on the planet while also promoting hemp as a valuable, sustainable textile product.

Although their bulletproof jackets aren’t available at HoodLab, the space serves as an exclusive outlet for their wares—including a line of Sea Shepherd clothing with a portion of the proceeds going to the organization. HoodLamb t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, hats, and accessories are available in over 300 shops worldwide, but Dunn and CiCi are treating HoodLab as the brand’s flagship store, while also approaching it as more than just a retail outlet.

“Our goal is to be as environmentally conscious as possible, but you have to make sacrifices to make a lasting product,” Dunn says. “We’ve tried using organic dyes, but they bleed too much in

Hoodlab is also a vehicle to educate the masses on the benefits of growing and manufacturing hemp for health, the environment, and the economy.

“Ultimately, we’re envisioning this as a collaborative gallery space,” Dunn says, highlighting a recent collection of refurbished BMX bikes by Sheldon Reed as the sort of showcase they’ll

be featuring more of. “Painters like Van Gough and Rembrandt used hemp canvases—the word “canvas” actually comes from the word cannabis—so it makes sense that we work so closely with artists we respect.” He’s pointing to the series of coats that have been painted on and customized by artists of multiple disciplines—graffiti, graphic design, illustration, and tattoo.

“Hemp competes on every level, and it’s going to happen eventually.” —Adam Dunn “We have so many artist friends from all over the world who we met during our time in Amsterdam,” CiCi adds. “When they come through Denver, we want them to have a space where they can be creative.” This invitation to creativity extends to the walls, which are alive with pieces by graffiti artists who’ve passed through the shop since it opened earlier this year. As Dunn was unpacking in his first weeks in Denver, he stumbled across his old license and set it next to his state medical marijuana card. “It’s sort of like this dream come true,” he says. For as passionate as he is about cannabis—his seeds have won many prizes for their quality and the potency of the plants they grow into—he is equally so about hemp. Thus, HoodLab is also a vehicle to educate the masses on the benefits of growing and manufacturing hemp for health, the environment, and the economy. He sees a legal future for both plants in the U.S. as inevitable. “Hemp competes on every level, and it’s going to happen eventually.”

Altitude chose its location near Hampden and Yosemite because the staff wanted to be close to the Denver Tech Center, Inverness Business Park, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Parker, and Castle Rock. They wanted to be accessible to those patients not wanting to drive into the heart of downtown Denver. The second you walk through the door, you’ll feel welcome. Altitude is a family-owned business and the staff is very knowledgeable—everyone can help “what ails ya,” and each one is happy to answer whatever questions you may have. Additionally, the team at Altitude has an extensive headshop with hand-blown glass pipes from the country’s top artists—Darby Holm, Lunch Box, Cowboy, ABE (North Star Glass), Blade, and brand names like Illadelph, Medicali, and Jetter Tubes. sample menu selections top strains:: Durban Poison (Sativa) The sweet, minty, candy-like flavor of Durban Poison is not the only thing most daytime patients like about this weed. It's also extremely potent and causes and extremely a joyful, upbeat yet relaxed, and somewhat tranquil high. Favored by growers with above average abilities, Durban Poison rewards those who cultivate her with huge buds loaded with THC and a large yield. She’s an extremely bushy plant with a low calyx-to-leaf ratio. However, some growers use her trimming to make potent hash due to the amount of foliage they have after harvest.

Grand Daddy Purple (Indica)

OG Kush (Indica) From the sunny mountains of Southern California, OG Kush remains as one of the most in-demand strains of medicinal cannabis. Rock stars, movie stars, and every day hippies all enjoy its sticky feel, aromatic sent, crystal-covered buds, and waystoney high. It's an indica-dominant hybrid that produces an intense high, but also requires somewhat elongated recovery times. When properly grown and dried, its leaves are nearly neon green and are just a treat to look at. Add in the heavy crystallization that occurs during flowering over every inch of the plant and you'll see that OG Kush marijuana is revered for loads of excellent reasons.

Sour Diesel (Sativa)

Green bud nuggets begin to show purple hues as they mature on Granddaddy Purple cannabis plants. This all-indica marijuana strain is known worldwide for its many phenotypes that include Grape Ape, Grandaddy Grape Ape, and Purple Erkel to name just a few. She is able to produce heavy yields when left to growing the way she prefers. Indoors, this shrub-like plant will grow up to three feet. Outdoors, up to eight.

Excellent in the early morning, Sour Diesel gives you a bright, energetic, and quite possibly talkative wake-n-bake experience, mixed with just enough indica calming to make you chill and thoughtful. These beautiful females top out at about six feet indoors and develop to display an ever-pleasing Christmas tree shape. As the ladies mature fully, they begin to display purple foliage and pistils with hues of pink. Loose buds, shaped like spears, are common.

Chem Dawg (Indica)

Sour Grape (Hybrid)

The famed Chem Dawg, aka Chemdawg, is one of the most potent marijuana strains in existence. Originating in mystery and legend, Chem Dawg was supposedly found as a seed in a bag of high-quality bud bought by the strain's namesake, who is now breeding various new varieties with these genetics. Chem Dawg is powerful medicine, with a strong smell of Pine-Sol and jet fuel, and a very strong high—which can be too strong and anxiety-producing for less-experienced smokers. As the progenitor of many kush and diesel varieties, Chem Dawg is a proud parent of many currently popular marijuana strains.

A delectable hybrid of Grape Ape and the legendary Sour Diesel, this strain is gaining more and more popularity. The buds are medium-sized, light-green, and astonishingly coated with sticky tri-chromes. The aroma from these near-perfect nugs is fragrantly similar to white wine, citrus, and fruit, with undertones of sour dank. Arguably one of the best tasting medications around, Sour Grapes also has a potency that few other strains are able to compete with. The sweet, sour, grapey, and candy-like flavor of this indica-dominant bud is followed by a most euphoric body high that won’t land you in a hopeless case of couch-lock but it will make laying down extremely comfortable.

Master Kush (Indica)

Skywalker OG (Sativa)

This strain is hardy and vigorous, thriving in most conditions and doing especially well indoors and in greenhouse settings. It's a medium-sized, compact, dense plant with spiky forest-green leaves and ball-shaped buds with long orange hairs. The flavor is definitely a kush derivative, with citrusy and earthy notes, as well as hints of pine and spice. It's highly potent, and is an excellent choice for most medical treatment, but is especially beneficial for pain relief and appetite enhancement.

Despite the potency, this strain is rather clear-headed and leaves the user capable and relaxed, able to handle whatever situation may come their way. This strain is good for an early evening unwinding session, as it won’t incapacitate, but definitely relaxes the body and mind. Moderate pain relief, aid with nerve issues, aid with digestion, mood elevation, and body relaxation are all strong medical qualities which the Skywalker possesses. hempconmag.com

The New York Power Diesel (NYPD) is an indoor power strain with a radical mix of Sativa Mexicana father and Afghan/Dutch indica mother. The Nirvana addition to the diesel family stays close to the New York variant. NYPD is an F1 hybrid that is balanced but sativa-dominant, with potential for gardeners and home breeders. Its mother plant, the Aurora Indica, is a combination of Northern Lights and an Afghan strain that was stabilized especially for use in this cross. The heavy, greasy narcotic effects of the Aurora Indica beautifully cut the edge of the crispy, speedy Oaxacan sativa father known as Eldorado. The resulting terpenoids have a powerful diesel aroma with a lemon-edged fuel flavor.

Aurora Indica Indica dominant 90/10 Aurora Indica's leaves are dark and impressively wide and its smell is dense and spicy, leading gardeners to anticipate the cosmic indica experience its name suggests. The buds are thick and greasy to the touch, with a deep Afghani flavor that is more apparent when grown in soil. A great stone before bed, this heavy buzz comes on quickly and can be quite sedative. People have reported hot ears as a common side effect when vaporizing. This strain has medicinal potential for treating hyperactivity and insomnia.

Sweet Tooth (Sativa 60/40) This is a smooth smoke with a very sweet taste and smell. It will give you a very mellow and relaxing buzz. This one is great for migraines, glaucoma, and pain.

The Purps (Indica 80/20) This bud is great for insomnia, relieving muscle tension and nausea, and great for patients with MS and Crohn's Disease.

Southern OG Kush (Sativa 65/35)

Sweet Grass

Caviar

Comes on strong with an instant effect. This sativa dominant strain does not ignore the Indica side of its roots. It has a wonderful head high with a heavy body effect. Southern is a great way to relax after a long day.

Brownies, banana bombs, and cookies

Smiley's Lollipops

Now this product is an excellent one for inflammation and pain. It is high in CBDs which help to alleviate those symptoms.

Standing Akimbo

Bubble Hash

Pecanna Bars, Buddy Mix, and Chronic Crispies

We have seven different types of bubble hash currently. These are all made in-house and from our own strains. We recently had it tested and it came back at 51-percent THC and 1.4-percent CBDs. Nice and slowburning without expanding too much in your lungs and making you cough.

Hong Kong Diesel (Sativa 70/30) This is an uplifting high that is excellent for back pain, muscle spasms, cachexia, and Crohn's disease. You also get a happy, euphoric high from this great bud. Be warned, you will be hungry!

Dusk (Indica 80/20) This is an excellent indica blend. You actually start out with a bit of a sativa effect for the first 30 minutes or so and then come down into a euphoric, relaxing indica couch locker high.

Tahoe OG Kush (Sativa 60/40) Another great sativa blend. You will get a wonderful body high that really helps alleviate all pain and it is great for muscles spasms. Expands in the lungs and can be a little harsh, but is an overall great smoke.

“I like Rocky Mountain Miracles because it’s run by a family. They care very much about their patients, all of them, especially ones with real health problems or on disability like myself. I’ve received very good advice on certain edibles that have helped me tremendously with my PTSD, my immune disease, and chronic problems with my back. It has helped take me off most of my medications, where I’m not having to take as many pharmaceutical drugs anymore and I can rely more on natural medicine.” Jannae, patient at Rocky Mountain Miracles

Testimonial #2 “Shopping at Rocky Mountain Miracles is fun. I laugh with Ali and her daughters every time I come in and they are so friendly and knowledgeable. There are always new products to try and they take the time to explain how the medication can affect me and answer my questions. They have a great selection of edibles. I have horrible back pain and prefer edibles during the day--my favorites are the Jolly Drops. I always feel like I’m getting a good deal--like I’m part of the family.” Susie, Rocky Mountain Miracles patient

COLORADO GROW CORPORATION

Colorado Grow Corporation Englewood, CO 80151 PH: 303.495.2040

"Here at Colorado Grow Corporation, we don't make the bud you smoke, we make the bud you smoke better... Our focus the past two years we've been in business was not to make a large variety of products, but instead to create the highest-quality concentrates in the industry," Carmen says, one of the founders of the company. It's the classic quality-over-quantity argument, and the Colorado Grow Corporation truly delivers on that promise. Just sprinkle a little of their strain-specific "moonrock" wax over your favorite bud and you will reach MMJ nirvana without having to smoke an entire bowl. For those who need serious medication, this is the way to go to get the most out of your medicine without having to medicate as much or as often to get the desired effect. "It is very important to be able to provide strain specific wax to the patient. This allows them to pick the exact right medication for their ailment. Most wax you find on the market is a hodgepodge of many different strains. The problem with this is the patient doesn't know from one purchase to the next how they will be affected and, more importantly, how their ailment will be relieved," Carmen explains. Next time you're in your favorite dispensary make sure to ask if they carry CGC's strain-specific wax. If they carry it, you will not be disappointed.

JULIE & KATE BAKED GOODS

Infused Products :: Edibles

www.julieandkate.com CannLabs Tested Strain Specific Gluten-Free Non-GMO

Julie & Kate Baked Goods offers a healthy and effective way to medicate. They begin their process by handpicking each strain of high-grade organic marijuana based on potency, flavor, and known medicinal qualities. Then it is off to our Denver dedicated gluten-free kitchen (as someone with celiac, Julie insisted). After they have selected the strain, their methodical cannabis infusion process uses clarified, unsalted, hormone free butter. This helps to avoid impurities, saturated fats, and to support a long shelf life. The strain specific Cannabutter is then lab-tested for results that ensure accurate labeling of THC and other important cannabinoids. With this information on every label, patients can gauge the appropriate dose (amount of THC) that will provide the type of experience they desire and need. Strain-specific products allow the team at Julie & Kate to offer patients the dependable therapeutic qualities associated with each unique kind of cannabis. Julie & Kate Baked Goods' hand-crafted Cannabutter is baked or roasted into an edible that is effective, healthy, potent and delicious. Enjoy responsibly! over three years ago, when the owner became a patient. John, also a patient and long time rock climbing friend, joined the owner to form Mountain High Suckers LLC. Their interest in growing for our extractions led to testing for cannabinoid content. Soon after testing with a local lab, they discovered that they had not one but two rare high CBD strains in their grow. Testing continues because of new interest to inform patients of the active cannabinoids in Mountain High Suckers. For over a year now Mountain High has been offering patients suckers and lozenges that have the highest CBD milligrams per edible in the state. They are proud to provide Colorado patients with a product like this, and the feedback is great. With 20 flavors to choose from, Mountain High Suckers has something for everyone!

"For over 10 years I've been an MMJ patient. I'm 54 years old, and suffer from spasms, nausea, and severe joint and muscle pain. I have looked for an edible option and have continued to be dissappointed until this spring when I found Mountain High Sucker. I was amazed at how well it worked— not only for relief, but for the amount of time that I was able to be active. I am looking forward to more products from MHS. I wish more companies would follow MHS and produce an honest edible."

Thanks, Mountain High Suckers "First off, I’m a 30 year old with stage 3 colorectal cancer, and with treatments, a lot of days I'm just plain sick. But I’ve been introduced to Mountain High Suckers—by far the best suckers I have had. They have some that are THC and others with more CBD and I love those ones because it helps with appetite, nausea, pain, and just being able to sleep. The flavors are awesome and sometimes I love to add a sucker to some coffee or tea and that really helps."

CANNLABS

Testing Facility

www.cannlabs.com

info@cannlabs.com Denver, CO PH: 720.998.9454

Since opening in May 2010, CannLabs has established itself as the premier lab for accurate results, quick turnaround time, and extraordinary customer service. The lab tests for the three main active cannabinoids: CBD, THC, CBN. At this time, they do not test for THC-V, CBC, and CBG because certified standards for these cannabinoids are not currently available in the U.S. They are available outside the U.S., but it is illegal for them to be brought into the country. A standard is the pure form of the cannabinoid. You need the standard to calibrate (communicate) to your instrument what you are testing for in the sample. Without a standard, you can’t calibrate and calculate with accuracy how much of that substance is in the sample. CannLabs is the only MMJ lab in Colorado that uses certified, third-party standards, and sourced from three different manufacturers to calibrate and check their instrument.
