Northside jobs boost Teamwork numbers ‘will quadruple’ By Tomás Kavanagh news@thecorknews.ie
A brand new idea, built from the ground up in Cork, will see local technology company Teamwork quadruple its staff between now and 2017 be-
ginning today, the company’s Vice President of Growth and Marketing has told The Cork News. Donal Cahalane highlighted that the company, led by Corkmen Peter Coppinger and Daniel Mackey, is taking a leap into the unknown with
a new concept, Teamwork Desk. The software forms the basis of a new online platform aimed at streamlining interaction between disparate arms of a business, whether locally or globally. The platform management company was founded in
Cork by Coppinger and Mackey in 2007 and has eschewed outside investment, aid and grants, getting by strictly on its merits and in–house innovation.

Do you hear the people sing?
Editor’s letter
I
’ve just about recovered from the rugby (men’s and women’s) last weekend, and was a twitching, gibbering mess by the time Paul O’Connell lifted that legendary trophy over his mighty head. “That’s the start of it now,” I thought in the sunshine. “That’s set the tone for the country for the next while.” The effect certainly seems to have lasted for a lot of people, even as the sun skedaddled for the latter half of the week, as if it had suddenly remembered that it is, after all, just March, but the general background hum of bonhomie and optimism seemed fairly pervasive. Things were going great shapes until a friend contacted me last night. “George Hook writes for The Cork News, doesn’t he?” “And how!” I replied. George may have retired from television in the wake of possibly the best day the sport of rugby has ever seen in Europe, but he’s still writing for us and he’s still presenting The Right Hook on Newstalk. “Did you see it?” At this point my heart dropped — had something happened to George? I’d received his column by email just a few hours before. “Just look up ‘George Hook letter’ on YouTube. It’s…it’s just really bad.” I didn’t know what to expect, so I went to YouTube and did as I’d been told. There was George, looking younger than his years, steely–eyed, self–assured. And then he started to speak. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to make of what he was saying. Awful, debased things. Low blows. Thoughts far beyond the realm of any sense of decency. “What on earth is he on about?” I wondered, but I’d already guessed. If you haven’t seen the video of George reciting a letter that someone had the unmitigated gall to sit down and write to him, then you ought to watch it. It is a filthy, disgusting, repugnant diatribe full of the lowest and most insulting sentiment you’re likely to hear coming from the mouth of an elderly man. George continued undeterred, and proud. “This doesn’t hurt me!” he declared. I think it would have hurt anyone. George has been no saint, but he has — and nobody should ever expect less from him — confessed every sin, held his hand up to all his wrongs, been penitent and repentant and asked for forgiveness. For someone to try to use the details he has freely given about his own shortcomings to sit down and slowly, deliberately, anonymously (of course — what a coward) write a letter, and go to the trouble of posting it, hoping to inflict pain is just beyond disgusting. In our Family section this week you’ll read about bullying, especially anonymous bullying. It’s important to remember, as George pointed out, that it can happen to anyone. Follow Hook’s example. Rise above it. Be dignified. Be fearless. Be better than the bullies. Words — especially vicious, rotten words like the ones that were sent to him — can absolutely hurt, every bit as much as sticks and stones, but push through the pain. Talk to someone, just like George did, and you’ll find that it helps. And I hope you’ll join me in saying, loud and clear, to our columnist and to everyone who has been on the receiving end of a coward’s malice: ‘Don’t let the bastards get you down.’

Northside jobs boost continued from page 1 The strategy saw the original team of five expand to a workforce of 21, turning over between half a million and one million dollars a month. Their flagship product, Teamwork Projects, has more than 1.7 million users worldwide, among them some of the world’s biggest companies: PayPal, eBay, Disney and Adidas are all customers of the Blackpool–based enterprise, along with roughly 350,000 other businesses globally, from the very big to the very small. With revenue for 2015 already projected to approach the €20m mark, the new move — a closely guarded secret until today — is expected to drive Teamwork well beyond the €100 million milestone by 2019. Describing the announcement as “one of the biggest by an indigenous software company this year”, Mr Cahalane told The Cork
News that when he joined the company in June 2014, 14 people worked there. “The number of employees has already doubled since then, and we expect to at least double it again by 2016. In May, the Taoiseach and Richard Bruton will be in Cork and will officially announce more new jobs but we’ll be starting to recruit for those immediately. As the company has grown up now, we’re hiring for support, administration and marketing roles, as well as, of course, software development.” Donal Cahalane also pointed out that the new system is optimised for smaller and medium–sized businesses, and that part of its strength is its focus on keeping costs to a minimum. The huge expense of a dedicated call centre, now a staple of larger, technology–heavy companies, can be abandoned for a much more streamlined, flat–rate option. As Ireland’s economy rebounds (it is ex-
pected to once again be one of the best performing in Europe by next year), providing more latitude for SMEs to reorient expenditure will prove instrumental in fuelling the redevelopment of the indigenous business sector. “If you think of Cork you have Abtran and Voxpro, which are huge call centres dealing with customers all over the world, but if you’re an SME you’re not going to hire a call centre of your own and you’re going to have a couple of guys in–house. What this product does is categorises and organises it all, allowing you to run a technical support operation at a fraction of the cost. Tradtionally, every support employee is paid ‘per seat,’ whereas this new system is one fixed cost, allowing for much better budgeting. Everyone in the company becomes customer support. “There’s huge interest from our existing customer base, and it’s a whole new sector and market for us to ap-
proach. Companies are made up of teams of teams: accounts, warehousing, sales; they all use different software. With this, that will all integrate and the projects will become more than the sum of their parts.” The current pace of development has meant that Teamwork is already planning its next move beyond their newly–refurbished current offices, but the “We are from Cork, and we are staying in Cork” philosophy will be a constant, providing not only prospects for the city but also security for existing Cork–based staff. “We know that in two years time we’ll have to move out of this building and we won’t be thinking about moving to Shannon or to Dublin: we’ll be trying to find somewhere else on the northside,” Cahalane highlights. “We’re from Cork. If it’s not somewhere we can wear Munster jerseys there’s no hope there’ll be a Teamwork office there.”

Cork loses its European LEADER Cork’s funding to address poverty reduction, social inclusion, and economic development of rural areas has been cut by 70 percent for 2014 to 2020. County Cork is to receive €13.9 million funding under the European LEADER programme, Minister Alan Kelly has confirmed.
CIT academic staff will strike By Eoghan MacNeill news@thecorknews.ie
Industrial action is to be taken by Cork Institute of Technology academic staff opposed to the forthcoming merger between CIT and IT Tralee. Staff represented by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) have given CIT management formal notice that action will begin following a ballot of its members, which found 92 percent in favour of industrial action. Staff at the institute have confirmed to The Cork News that action will commence on Monday, April 13th following the IT’s Easter break, at first with a refusal by academic staff to cooperate with any merger–related activity. “There is no educational basis to this merger. Its only purpose is to cut costs,” June O’Reilly of the Teachers Union of Ireland told The Cork News. Estimated to cost in the region of €6.7 million, the merger of the two institutions has been proposed to support the creation of Munster Technical University (MTU). TUI–represented staff in CIT are not opposed to attaining technical university status, but are vehemently against being subject to a mandatory merger.
The decrease from 2007– 2013’s allocation of €46 million is the highest in the country. “These cuts will have a significant impact on the ability of community–based project promoters to access support for vital community services and facilities, and will negatively impact on business de-
velopment growth and employment across rural areas of the county,” said John Walsh, chairperson of the Irish Local Development Network. Mr Walsh called on Minister Kelly to increase the total budget for LEADER. Concern has been raised as to allocating the funds, with County Cork considered to be
just one unit. Funds for Cork are subdivided between the three administrative areas of North Cork, South Cork and West Cork. Under the terms of the 2014–2020 LEADER funding, North Cork will receive €5.1 million, South Cork €3.8 million, and West Cork €5 million.

“This has led to serious feelings of alienation.” “This is an example of the ‘corporate culture’ – running universities as businesses first – that is damaging third–level institutions worldwide. Resources that should be spent on educational services are being used to fund this merger. “Academic staff in CIT are being neglected, and this has led to serious feelings of alienation,” said Ms O’Reilly. While TUI industrial action will begin with a refusal to cooperate with merger–related activity, there are plans to escalate to work to rule, and a full strike if necessary. With the dispute referred to the Labour Relations Commission, an MTU spokesperson said: “CIT and ITT can confirm that we have agreed to meet the TUI at the Labour Relations Commission and will be making no further comment while that is pending.”

Time is money A watch which costs almost twice as much as an average house has been sold by Keane’s Jewelers in Cork, just in time to mark the long–awaited ‘spring forward’ which will see Ireland’s clocks set to summer time from this weekend. The remarkable €349,000 Patek Philippe timepiece, officially called the Grand Complication Celestial but known simply as “The Celestial” took a full 18 months to build. “It is created out of solid 18ct white gold and is set with over 5.5ct of diamonds,” Keane’s Elaine Sheahan told The Cork News. The face of “The Celestial” features the sky as seen from Geneva. “It is truly a beautiful piece of engineering, combining the beauty of diamonds with the precision mechanics of a grand complication movement. Our customer was over the moon to be able to collect his piece,” said master jeweler Patrick Keane. Patek Philippe watches of this calibre are so exclusive that buyers have been known to travel half way around the world in order to purchase

Tourism booster for Cork
Donnchadh Ó Laoighre
Ó Laoghaire urges Dunnes strike support Cork Sinn Féin Councillor Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has urged the people of Cork to support Dunnes Stores workers in strike action on Holy Thursday, even as efforts continue to stave off the planned one–day work stoppage. “The refusal of management to engage with trade union representatives has left the Dunnes Stores workers without any other option but to strike,” said Cllr Ó
Laoghaire. “The workers of Dunnes Stores are ordinary people from our communities. They are our family members, friends and neighbours. They deserve our support. “Management…must engage with the workers’ trade union representatives and with the industrial relations mechanisms of the State” the Carrigaline–Ballincollig councillor concluded.
The launch of a new government tourism policy is expected to provide substantial benefits for the Cork region. As announced this week, People, Place and Policy – Growing Tourism to 2025 aims to create an additional 50,000 jobs in the tourism sector, and a concurrent increase in revenue from air and ferry fares by €1.5 billion, to a projected total of €5 billion. The policy also aims to grow overseas visits to Ireland from 2014’s 7.6 million to 10 million. Welcoming the launch, Cork North West TD Áine Collins said: “This is great news for counties like Cork, which have a lot to offer to tourists and depend so much on the sector. “As well as its music and heritage Cork has a buzzing city and a stunning coastline. There is so much to offer tourists here and Cork is now well placed to benefit from this ambitious new ten year tourism policy.” “The government is committed to tourism growth as part of its plan to spread the economic recovery to all regions of Ireland. The news comes following

Responding to the announcements, Cork South TD Jerry Buttimer and the chief executive of the Cork Chamber of Commerce both called for increased funding for the Cork tourism sector: “We need to put in place a strategy, in conjunction with Failte Ireland, that markets the Cork region as whole,” Deputy Buttimer told The Cork News, adding that he

is “very anxious to grow inbound tourism in the area.” Concurring with Deputy Buttimer, Conor Healy, Cork Chamber said: “What’s needed for the Cork region is a mixed package of measures, including financial support, to facilitate marketing of the area.”

Cork’s help sought for two brave boys A five–star Cork hotel is to host a fundraising event in aid of an operation to help a young Cork boy take his first steps. Due to brain damage caused at birth, four–year– old Alex Foley has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, and is not able to walk independently. Parents Patrick and Laurane established the “Alex’s Wish to Walk” campaign, aiming to fund a €60,000 operation in a US hospital. To date, €55,000 has been raised for the operation that is known to aid cerebral palsy patients, helping them to walk and lead an independent life. Castlemartyr Resort will hold a teddy bears’ picnic on Sunday, 29th March, which will feature face painting, gymboree, balloon modelling and Easter egg hunts, all to aid Alex. Tickets for the family event are €10, and are available from McCarthy’s Newsagent in Midleton. Donations can be made by texting ALEX to 57802, or online at alexswishtowalk. com/donate.

Meanwhile a Sligo couple who named their little boy, who suffers from the same condition, after Cork guitar legend Rory Gallagher are asking Leesiders to rally behind a similar campaign.
Gerry and Shauna Gallagher want to bring two–year– old Rory to a state-of-theart hospital in Missouri for surgery. The operation, selective dorsal rhizotomy, at St
Louis Children’s Hospital is the same that two young Cork girls — Abbey McGeough from Dublin Hill, and Katie Byrne from Cobh — undertook last year. “It broke my heart to re-
ceive his diagnosis at eight months old,” said Shauna. “I was very down for a number of months, but with Gerry’s support I got back my fight and strength to face the world.”
Rory can stand, but can’t walk unaided, and doctors in the US say he is an “ideal” candidate for surgery. A text line has been set up for Rory and you can donate €2 by texting FEET to 57802.

Hook uncorked As Ireland continues to bask in unprecedented rugby glory, George Hook warns of potential dark clouds on the horizon... george@thecorknews.ie
T
he concept behind how a living organism is able to grow and mature is a relatively easy process to understand. Take a tree as an example. If 10 trees are planted across a large area in a forest, it is reasonable to assume that each tree will grow at a different rate to the others. There are a number of variable factors as to why this is so. Trees, like all other living things, respond to the circumstances of their environment. If one tree is allowed more sunlight and nutrients from the ground than the others, it is safe to assume that it will grow quicker and taller than the others during a given period of time. Similarly, if a tree is denied sufficient levels of sunshine or is incapable of absorbing enough water due to the circumstances of its position in the ground, it stands to reason that its development will be stunted or drawn out over a longer period of time. People operate under a different set of conditions because genetics plays a crucial role in the development of the human body: Some people develop and mature faster than others, even though the levels of nutrition and sustenance over the course of their early lives might be broadly similar. Some adolescents go through puberty at 12 or 13 years of age, while others might not begin their development until 15 or 16. The physical manifestation of the human body, where external factors do not vary from one extreme to another, owes more to genetics than it does any artificial input. With that in mind, it would be foolish and unfair to cast aspersions about the prognosis of a young man after only 17 or 18 years. Perhaps, if the issue was forced, one could make an educated guess as to
“Will Ireland’s most talented young players give up the game?”
a person’s physical capabilities in later life, but pigeon– holing someone in the midst of their formative years is just plain foolish. Young men develop and transition from childhood to adulthood in anything from 5 to 15 years. A strong physical specimen at 18 might have reached the end of their development, while a short and skinny male of the same age might only be starting to grow. I think about this when I ponder how the provincial rugby academy operates. The concept of a rugby academy, as it is in its current guise in Munster, Leinster, Connacht and Ulster, has never
sat easy with me. In fact, I would go so far as to suggest the academies are not fit for purpose. Academies are designed to single out underage talent and to develop potential in young players over a period of three or four years. But of the lucky few selected out of school, how many actually graduate through to the senior ranks in professional rugby? The majority of talented schools players give up the game long before they are even considered for senior selection. A system that is designed to encourage the best and brightest underage stars is actually having a negative effect on the numbers gradu-
ating to senior rugby. Why is that? The professional rugby pool in Ireland is tiny, even in comparison to our neighbours in England or France. Where the Aviva Premiership in England has twelve teams competing in the top flight and 14 in France, Ireland has just four. There are only a certain number of squad places available in each team, so those who are deemed surplus to requirement in the early stages of the academy are removed from the player pool. So, in essence, we have an academy system that signs players directly out of school and gives them a tiny window of opportunity to prove their
worth to the senior squad. If a guy falls short during his first two years, his contract is scrapped and his chances of playing professional rugby are over before they even begin. Sadly, the club game is falling further and further down the pecking order. Where once the top flight All Ireland league could be used as a gateway to a provincial contract, now the IRFU is making it as difficult as possible for clubs to forge a link with the provinces. Academy and Development players are shunted into a provincial ‘A’ team, rather than being encouraged to line out for their clubs. This week, as Ireland celebrates a second successive
Six Nations title, I wonder what the future of the game will hold. Will the next Paul O’Connell or Brian O’Driscoll come through the system and progress to the senior ranks? Or will Ireland’s most talented young players give up the game because the system that was designed to spot them is incapable of catering for their development? As it stands, too many young men are being passed over at a ridiculously young age because they are deemed surplus to requirements. Either the system changes to fulfil its brief or Ireland will continue to miss out on star potential. And that would be a great shame.

Remembering Lusitania Four Cork coastal communities are preparing to mark the centenary of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. Kinsale, The Old Head, Cobh and Courtmacsherry will pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in 1915 and those involved in the rescue efforts. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat, with a loss of 1,201 lives, hastening the USA’s entry into the first world war. The Old Head of Kinsale is the point from which the Lusitania took her final bearing and is the most prominent accessible point on land to the ship’s final resting place. Currently, the Old Head Signal Tower is being restored and transformed into a Lusitania Museum, with plans to exhibit artefacts recovered from the wreck. It will be officially opened on Thursday, May 7th. Eventually the Museum will also host an iconic piece of sculpture with the names of all who sailed on the Lusitania on May 7th, 1915. The commemorations for Lusitania100 Cork will include wreath laying ceremonies, with President Michael D Higgins in Cobh, and Minister Simon Coveney at the

Smile, you’ve won! Cork’s Smilestore, the Dental Specialists, has won a coveted ‘What Clinic?’ award from whatclinic.com, a website used by 15.7 million people around the world every year to select the best in dental, orthodontic, medical and cosmetic care. The website carries a global database of thousands of the world’s best clinics, and has selected Smilestore as the winners of their 2015 Customer Service Award; one of only a tiny fraction of clinics to ever have shared the honour. The award is given by the healthcare search engine
only after the highest praise from customers over a 12– month period, and signifies excellent customer service, superior satisfaction and overwhelmingly positive consumer feedback. Award– winners are rated across a number of metrics, including how well the clinic treats them, h o w quickly they are contacted and s e e n and how satisfied they are with their treatment. Smilestore’s managing director Tamás Kirchnopf told The Cork News “We are delighted to be recognised for
our commitment to customer service. As a practice, it is something we focus on in everything we do and to receive such positive feedback from our patients is great.”
The whatclinic.com awards are now in their sixth year, having grown to become an internationally recognised mark of quality. Whatclinic. com CEO Caelen King con-

Thousands set for Choral Fest
Cork’s Karen Egan (centre) accepting her Everywoman in Technology FDM award in London. Picture by Rebecca Bolton
International award for Cork businesswoman Cork–based Karen Egan has been awarded International Leader of the Year at the 2015 FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards. The awards recognise women’s achievements in science, technology, engineering and maths, with the aim of addressing the gender diversity gap in the sectors. Ms Egan is a senior director at the Europe, Middle East and Africa headquarters of VMware, a cloud computing provider. Responsible for leading a
team of 300 in global support services, she has been credited with driving the company’s positive customer satisfaction results over the course of the last year. Accepting the award, Ms Egan said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see so many women in the audience of such a high–calibre event. “I really am honoured to accept this award, and will make sure I use it to bring even more females into IT and further their education and learning.” Ms Egan has also been involved in Cork event IWish,
which aims to inspire more young females to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. While females consistently achieve higher grades than males in IT–related subjects, they fill a mere 16 percent of IT and telecoms positions, according to a 2013 report. The FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards were established in the hope of recognising those who demonstrate that women can achieve great success if they opt to forge a career in IT.
Nearly 5,000 participants will take part in this year’s Cork International Choral Festival. International choirs will travel from Finland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, the UK, Poland, Sweden, Estonia and Canada for the five–day event on the May Bank Holiday weekend. The opening gala concert will take place on Wednesday, April 29th in Cork City Hall with Cork’s re-
nowned vocal ensemble Madrigal ’75 presenting Music of The Baroque, accompanied by the Cork Baroque Orchestra. Also performing will be one of Europe’s finest vocal ensembles, Rajaton, and German ensemble VocaMe. Festival manager Sinéad Dunphy stated: “It is always our aim to drive business into the city and county but to do so while maintaining artistic
integrity and ensuring the level of quality we offer remains at the high standard that has been set over the years. “As it grows and improves each year we hope our festival can continue to be an important part of the great cultural community that is helping both city and county become a real destination for many to visit and enjoy,” she concluded.

The Cork–based National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) has announced the details of an historic lead role in delivering the Canary Islands’ first offshore survival training centre. The Spanish centre, which is to be completed by September of this year, will provide mandatory safety training to workers employed on oil rigs off the coast of Spain. “Cork is lucky that it is Ireland’s maritime capital. This centre, for the most part, is effectively being built in Cork,” said Conor Mowlds, head of NMCI, a constituent college of CIT. “SEFtec, who have partnered with us on this project,
“This is a real opportunity for us to export Irish expertise.” build training units in Cork and then ship these to Las Palmas, where the training centre will be situated,” he added, speaking to The Cork News. Until now, Spanish citi-
zens and ex–pat seafarers employed in the Spanish oil industry would primarily complete survival training in Aberdeen. The development of the Canary Islands facility will allow these seafarers to receive training immediately upon arrival in Spain. “This is a real opportunity for us to export Irish expertise,” said Mr Mowlds, explaining “it was incumbent upon NMCI to capitalise on the €60 million government funding” the institution has received. The announcement of the project follows similar NMCI work in Ukraine, Abu Dhabi and Angola.

Cork Tech Cluster announces landmark Europe agreement Regional winners Seán Kelly and Olan Hegarty from Scoil Mhuire gan Smál with Liam Harrington and Maev McGovern from Bishopstown Community School. Picture by Gerard McCarthy
Student entrepreneurs are Dublin bound Student teams from Bishopstown Community College and Scoil Mhuire gan Smál are to compete in the national finals of the student enterprise awards at Croke Park. Mark Lenihan, Seán Kelly and Stephen O’Shea from Scoil Mhuire gan Smál devised a board game promoting literacy in primary school children. “One in ten primary students struggles with literacy, and one in three from disadvantaged schools struggle. “We wanted to address this problem,” said Mr Lenihan, speaking to The Cork News. Maev McGovern is member of a six–student team from Bishopstown Community Col-
lege progressing to the final for their work on Changes — a mental health booklet for teenagers. “It’s a 30–day positive health challenge,” she explains. “It seems like everyone our age is affected by mental health issues, and they’re still viewed negatively. We wanted to try change that,” added Ms McGovern, speaking to The Cork News. Having been named as winners at the regional finals for the Cork Student Enterprise Programme held in UCC this month, both teams will now represent Cork in the national finals on Wednesday, April 22nd.
it@Cork — an alliance of those working in Cork’s technology sector — has announced a deal that brings with it the possibility of thousands of new pan–European partnerships. The alliance, known as a tech cluster, this week signed a deal with other European clusters that will allow for the sharing of infrastructure and expertise of member companies. Comprising 300 members working in the tech sector and their 30,000 employees, it@ Cork has now forged partnerships with 3,000 partner firms under the terms of the Business Roaming Agreement. “Having the option to strategically use the knowledge, offices and connections for a time in a foreign market would allow for diversification, competitive intelligence and the opportunity for our members to investigate additional revenue opportunities from overseas,” said it@Cork chairman Ronan Murphy (pictured right).
Members of it@Cork at a meeting in March
“It would also expose them to the various management practices and methods of doing business which would be invaluable, especially if they are considering expanding internationally. “Naturally, building connections and relationships with businesses abroad is the core benefit of this Business
Roaming Agreement.” Tech clusters party to the agreement include 900 French–based companies, 900 German–based companies, and 500 UK–based companies. European companies who have identified a potential Cork partner can now contact it@Cork, or vice versa.

Garda speed campaign An Garda Síochána will conduct an intensive national speed enforcement operation for a 24–hour period from this morning, Friday. The objective of the operation is to reduce the number of speed–related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries. It will consist of high– visibility speed enforcement activities on national primary and secondary roads. Every enforcement technology at An Garda’s disposal will be utilised, including handheld lasers, ROBOT vans and in–car speed detection systems. GoSafe vehicles will also be deployed for maximum visiblity. Last year saw another increase in road deaths, resulting in 190 fatalities around Ireland. Excessive and inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor to road traffic collisions, and as a general rule a 1% reduction in speed will bring about a 4% reduction in fatal collisions. “We want to reduce the number of speed–related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads,”
Sally (right) with parents Ken and Sabina.
‘The Gift of Life’ “We appeal to drivers to treat the speed limit as the absolute maximum.”
said Chief Superintendent Mark Curran of the Garda National Traffic Bureau. “We appeal to drivers to treat the speed limit as the absolute maximum they will travel at or slow down when road, weather or traffic conditions dictate. It sounds a very simple ask – but we also know that approximately 80% of our speeding detections are between 10-29km/h over the posted limit, with nearly half occurring in 50km/h zones.”

A young Montenotte woman born with a rare kidney condition has said she “won’t ever be able to thank” an organ donor and their family for the gift she received. Sally Nagle (23), who has idiopathic multicentric osteolysis, was diagnosed with total kidney failure in 2006. “For the next two years I was on dialysis for 12 and a half hours every night,” she told The Cork News. “It
was hard not being able to do things that my other teenage friends were able to, such as having sleepovers and enjoying teenage life, as I had to be connected to my dialysis by around 7pm every night.” In July 2008, Sally had a dream she was going to get a call for a transplant while away at a summer school in Waterford. “The following week the call came,” she said. “It was early in the morning and I thought when my mom woke me up that I was still in my dream. I remember feeling
mixed emotions…overjoyed but also sad that another life was taken for me to live.” Seven years on, Sally can go to college, take holidays, and socialise. She sends a card to her donor’s family each year on the anniversary of her transplant. Organ Donor Awareness Week — organised by the Irish Kidney Association — commences tomorrow, Saturday. Daytripper Chloe Nagle (36) is the sound engineer and tour manager with Mick Flannery & Band. Also a tutor in sound engineering at Colaiste Stiofain Naofa, Chloe has toured Europe and the US as sound engineer for a host of Irish acts.
I
literally don’t have a typical day. It all depends on whether I’m teaching or on tour in Ireland or abroad somewhere. When I’m teaching in Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa I’m up at seven to be in for nine. What I’d normally have is porridge, freshly squeezed orange juice and an espresso – it can be hard to replicate that on tour, though. When you’re on tour in America, generally the drives from venue to venue would be quite long. You either do some of that driving after the gig or you start early in the morning. My first thoughts on tours are purely functional: food, shower, and looking forward to the gig. To be a sound engineer, you don’t have to be musical, but you have to understand music. I’ve always been obsessed with music. I went to UCC after school and did a degree in French and German. My father’s a GP and my initial plan was to go into medicine, but most of my energy went into playing in bands and organising live music. My father is quite musical. He learned the violin as a child then picked up trad fiddle later on. He was bit ropey to start, but it became a huge part of my childhood. Dad steered me away from medicine. He would say it’s always a good thing to work in an area you love and enjoy, and that it’s always possible. After UCC, I went to Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa to study music. I soon enough realised I was a good musician, but I that I was never going to be absolutely brilliant. I don’t like not being really good at things, and wanted to be really good at something. I knew that if I worked hard at engineering, I would come across a lot of opportunities.
Interview by Eoghan MacNeill Picture courtesy of Chloe Nagle
“I don’t like not being really good at things.”
There have been some rough experiences along the way — long tours in people carriers with a five–person band and all the gear; dodgy hotels with bulletproof reception areas. I’ve been able to see the other side now, too. I had a few lovely gigs over the weekend, like playing in the Olympia with Mick Flannery and staying in the Gresham in Dublin, which is a lovely hotel.
The food gets nicer and the tours get more comfortable. The longer you’re at it the easier it gets. Since having my son, Benoît, three years ago, I won’t go away for more than five or six days now. He’s definitely changed my philosophy towards work. I don’t do gigs I don’t particularly want to just to pick up money. I’m able to choose the
events I really want to work on. It’s great teaching part– time in the college because it allows me to spend four days a week at home with my boy. I’d break for lunch at 12 on teaching days. My husband, Julian, is a chef. It’s brilliant because he’ll prepare some homemade soup and things like that for my lunch. He’s head chef at the Poach-
ers Inn in Bandon. I actually met him when I was doing my music degree. He was a singer in a rock band — the Shambuenos. He makes incredible curries, and just cooks meat really well. He works five nights a week, but the nights when he’s home are a huge treat. After work, times for relaxation are few and far be-
tween, unfortunately. We’ve got a lively three year old running around so we just try to keep him calm, reading books with him or doing some painting. My idea of a good night out is a good night in with my husband, a fire, a film, some really nice food and maybe some wine. Nights away aren’t as frequent as they used be, but when I’m on the road I like being part of the physical takedown of the stage after a gig. Even if there’s a huge crew to do that, I like to get up on stage and wrap cables and take down things. That’s a really nice comedown from the craziness of a gig. I might have a drink or two or after gigs — that would be quite rare, though. I would never mix partying with work. It’s been my rule all along. You have to be really careful. The temptation when you’re playing or working at a gig is to think that every night is a celebration. Every night there’s this party atmosphere, then there’s this anti– climax once the gig is over. It’s one of the big hazards of the industry, really. I’ve seen it destroy people. I’ve seen people bickering on stage, people throwing up on stage. Some talents have been extinguished quicker than they should have been. That’s the dark side. The best bit is the vibe in the room. When you’re turning up music that you really love in a gorgeous venue to a huge audience full of happy people hearing things the way they should be: that’s what makes me happy. I may have had a few flashes over the years — ‘what if I had become a doctor?’— but I really don’t have any regrets about my career choice. The places I’ve seen, and the things I’ve been exposed to: it’s just fantastic.

1D show goes on for Public urged to be alert for wildfire risk Zayn’s Cork double
wildfires that destroyed or damaged property, including farmland and forests. “These events endanger people’s homes, and put the lives of rural dwellers and emergency service personnel at considerable risk.” The Fine Gael TD called on the public to report any suspicious activity or unattended fires to the gardaí and fire and emergency services. It is illegal to burn growing vegetation on uncultivated land between March and September.
Those engaged in such activity are liable for prosecution and could face fines and imprisonment. As the weather becomes drier through Springtime, old scrub and vegetation can ignite very quickly, and even a short spell of dry, windy conditions can be enough to make any form of flame a hazard in the right areas of the county. Mountainsides covered in scrub and gorse, for instance in west Cork or Duhallow, can be especially vulnerable and difficult for fire crews to reach.

Farmers, forest owners and members of the public in Cork have been warned to be alert to the risk of wildfires over the coming weeks. A wildfire risk can quickly develop following dry weather patterns in areas where grass, gorse and heather are present, and have affected hundreds of acres of Cork’s countryside in recent years. Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Tom Hayes highlighted the threat: “In recent years we have experienced a number of major
The show will go on for a Kinsale singer who stars as Zayn Malik in an acclaimed One Direction tribute act. Jamie Searls (25) of London–based Only One Direction told The Cork News that despite Malik’s shock departure this week from 1D, he still has a job, as the tribute act continues as normal for their upcoming tours. “We are definitely continuing as a five–piece,” he said. Jamie (pictured second from right), who moved to London five years ago, told The Cork News that recent days have been “manic”. “When I heard the news, I was like everyone else and thought ‘oh he’s leaving’. It’s sad in some ways I guess, with it being the end of a chapter,” said Jamie. “But good luck to him, I’m sure he made the right decision for himself.” In a statement Malik said that after five years with One Direction, he felt it was the right time for him to leave the band. “I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do
what feels right in my heart,” he said. Jamie, a psychology graduate from University College Cork, said Only One Direction has changed his life. “I’m very lucky,” he told us. “There are a lot of performers I meet on a day–to–day basis who don’t have the opportunities we get. We have been able to sing in Dubai, and all around Europe. I’m very privileged.”
Coincidently, on the day of Malik’s departure, Jamie also launched his self–penned song, Doing Time. The single will be available on iTunes next week. “It’s almost bizarre timing!” he laughed. “The media spotlight really isn’t that important to me, it’s more about writing, that’s what I really want to get into. I just wrote the song, put it out there and all of this blew up, it’s been absolutely bananas.”

Coveney is FG’s ‘Yes’ ambassador It is hoped Minister Simon Coveney’s appointment as director of elections for the marriage equality referendum will encourage Cork TDs to canvass for a ‘Yes’ vote in May. “We have contacted all Cork TDs asking them to play an active role in the ‘Yes’ campaign,” said advocacy group Yes Equality Cork, noting that support among politicians is not yet explicitly unanimous. “We’ve received an awful lot of silence,” said Ken Curtin, Yes Equality Cork, speaking to The Cork News. Three Cork South Central TDs — Ciaran Lynch, Micheál Martin and Jerry Buttimer — have actively canvassed for a ‘Yes’ vote, as has FG Senator Colm Burke. Meanwhile, Cork North Central TDs Billy Kelleher and Kathleen Lynch have spoken at public events in aid of the ‘Yes’ campaign. Minister Coveney’s “high profile and broad support

base” however may encourage more TDs to begin canvassing, says Mr Curtin. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine has said that ten years ago, while he agreed with the idea of same–sex unions, he had reservations on same– sex marriage: “Like a lot of people, my views on marriage were traditional, and not reflective of the complexities of relationships. I now feel that the role of government is to support solid relationships. If you believe that marriage is a good thing, a ‘Yes’ vote is positive for society,” he told
The Cork News. The Minister said he approached the Taoiseach in January, asking to be director of elections: “I did so because for this referendum to pass, we need to reach out to rural and traditional communities and reassure them a ‘Yes’ vote will not undermine their rights and traditions. “It’s about extending these rights to a new cohort of people. I hope as the Minister who represents rural Ireland, and as someone who has made that journey myself, I can instil confidence,” he said.

Medicine meets art at Jennings Gallery A Cork–based consultant oncologist is to hold an exhibition of his art work in a bid to show that “medicine and art are not mutually exclusive.” Roscommon–born Conleth Murphy, a consultant in medical oncology at the Bon Secours Hospital and senior UCC lecturer, this week

launched his first solo exhibition at the Jennings Gallery. Life Class is a tongue–in– cheek combination of mixed art and traditional life drawings that includes X-rays peeking through portraits and other art and medicine mixes. The exhibition will run until Wednesday, May 6th.
Cork organisers urged to apply for €1m fund People and organisations running events in Cork have been called on to apply for a national €1 million fund aimed at supporting community events and festivals. The Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora last year supported 22 Cork
events, and the 2015 application process is about to draw to a close, prompting a last round of applications for festivals and other events which could help to enliven County Cork and the city. As Ireland’s largest county, Cork is renowned for the
sheer volume of community events which are organised here every year, covering music, drama, food and drink, the arts, science and nature, land– and sea–based activities, history and much more. “I would urge anyone out there with a good idea or in-
teresting event, which would help us to reach out to the diaspora, to get in touch with us and make an application,” said Alan Coleman, Mayor of County Cork. Applications will close this Tuesday, March 31st. For full details, see corkcoco.ie.

Unique Cork journey planner launched Jack Ahern

Cork composers in national final Two Cork composers have progressed to the national final of a jingle–writing competition, competing against three other acts in the Today FM studios. Following a public vote,
Jack Ahern, Carrginavar and Mark Cosgrave, Youghal have made it to the final five for their entries to the Le Crunch Apples 7G jingle competition. Both men are now guaran-
teed a share of the prize fund for their four–line jingles — “Le Crunch” and “Crisp, Fresh, Reward,” respectively — and have the opportunity of winning the overall prize of €5,000.
A journey planner that will help Cork commuters make more green transport choices has been newly launched. The planner — the first of its kind specific to Cork — will inform users of the carbon emissions of their proposed method of travel. The Mix Your Mode Journey
Planner allows for the planning of a trip by public transport, cycling or with the use of an electric vehicle. Developed by Cork County Council, it is hoped the planner will encourage people to make more sustainable transport choices. For more information, see corkcoco.ie.

Dear Sir, On March 22nd 2015, and in the context of Marriage Equality, Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin called for a legal conscience clause to allow lay people to express religious objections without breaking Irish equality laws. Allowing a conscience clause would allow people to
discriminate against members of the LGBT community in Ireland. It would effectively institutionalise prejudice and discrimination, under the guise of permitting religious freedom. Certainly, the human right to religious freedom is very important. Furthermore, people can be

“We’ve got it covered” Our hair can be a vital part of our self–identity, and when illness takes it from us the effects can be more than just physical. Two Cork sisters have made it their mission to help, as Róisín Thornhill finds out.
L
isa Myers co– owns The Wig Clinic with her sister Fiona O’Riordan, and it’s obvious that working with clients who have recently lost their hair is more than just a job to her. “It’s a privilege to do this,” she says. “It’s not just a business to us. It’s more personal.” Lisa and Fiona’s mother passed away in 2007 after bravely fighting her own cancer battle. However, her diagnosis in 2004 was the catalyst for what was to eventually become The Wig Clinic. “Our mother was an amazing character, independent and very fashion conscious, one day she came home having gone off on her own to pick out her wig. She came home with a wig that was nothing like her. She wasn’t shown how to style it, or maintain it, there was no after care, and she wasn’t told about the grants available. We were very upset by the whole thing,” says Myers. This however, spurred Fiona, a successful hairdresser, into investigating what services (if any) were available to Irish people who were suffering from hair loss and what could be done to improve the
state of play. Pouring all of her time and energy into research and training eventually led her to come to the decision that if she was to provide the best hair replacement service for potential clients in Cork, she would need to sacrifice her successful salon. Fiona asked Lisa to join her in the business six months later and according to Myers they “haven’t looked back since.” Lisa admits that she and her sister had to grow the business steadily over time to ensure that firstly; they were providing a proper service for their clients and secondly, that they didn’t over extend themselves both physically and financially. “We approached our bank for a loan; it was before the crash, I’m not sure if we’d get it now. We also got great support from the Local Enterprise Board and through various courses and grants,” she explains. The sisters had a lot riding on this new venture: at the time they were both mothers of young children, Lisa also had a full time job and Fiona had built up her successful hairdressing business over the course of more than a decade. So, in Lisa’s own words, this new venture “had to work.”
However, while the business took off slowly at first, word began to spread about the sisters’ sensitive, hands–on approach: “we treat all our clients like we would have liked our own mother to be treated and I think it shows,” she says. When dealing with cancer and alopecia patients at their most vulnerable, sensitivity is the key, meaning that sometimes the sisters had to put their own grief aside to ensure that their clients got nothing but the best care. “I do recall a woman asking me how my Mom was doing — this was about three weeks after her passing in December 2007 — and I had to say ‘she’s fine, thanks for asking’. The lady in question was just starting her own treatment. She since went on to have a full recovery and we were there to help her through it,” Lisa remembers. She also admits that with every passing year she and her sister garner more and more knowledge about how to deal with patients who are going through a life–changing experience. “It’s not for the faint hearted,” she highlights: “both our cancer and alopecia continued on page 44

continued from page 43 clients are going through a highly emotional time in their life, often being diagnosed as recently as just a few days or weeks ago. With our alopecia patients it can be difficult too, as they are very unsure of the cause (of their hair loss). So, dealing with people’s emotions is challenging but one that comes very naturally to all our staff, who are all extremely empathetic.” The staff Myers mentions are employed part time and are “amazing,” in their boss’s words. While the prerequi-
site for employment at the Wig Clinic is previous hair dressing experience, the most important factor is personality and how prospective new members of staff interact with the patients. “You have to have the personal touch, you can’t be taught that,” emphasises Lisa. This attention to detail when selecting the right staff to deal with such emotionally vulnerable clients has certainly paid off for the two sisters, and since they started the business they have opened weekly clinics in Boots pharmacies in Wilton, Killarney, Limerick and Mitchelstown
“It’s not just a business to us. It’s more personal.” as well as in the Irish Cancer Society–run Recovery Havens in Mallow and Tralee. When dealing with cancer patients, The Wig Clinic prefers to see clients before they
begin chemotherapy, as not only does it help to put the person at ease, it also allows the clinic to see the how they normally wear their hair so they can have a product tailored specifically for the client when the time comes. “People are amazed at how realistic the wigs and hair pieces look: it enables the client to go out and do normal everyday things. Quite often people are amazed at the reactions they get, like ‘your hair is lovely — where did you get it done?’ or ‘aren’t you lucky you didn’t lose your hair!’” says Myers. The patient’s hair usually returns a month after chemo
“Why waste precious time? When McCarthys can check and compare 20 Insurers and get you the best deal.”
ends, however their business with The Wig Clinic is not quite finished yet, as the clinic offers clients a complimentary ‘first trim’. “It’s a great day for all concerned and a source of great inspiration for all our clients who are starting their treatment,” says Lisa with pride. While she readily concedes on more than one occasion that the work she and her sister do is not for the faint hearted Myers is full of inspiring stories of the individuals The Wig Clinic has helped over the years. “We had a 90–year–old lady come in for a wig after 20 years of alope-
cia. Her hair had been getting thinner and thinner and she eventually stopped going to mass and bingo. Her daughter convinced her to call into us and explore some new possibilities. She was so amazed with the results she went out and bought herself a new coat to go with her new hair right in time for her 90th birthday. It doesn’t get better that that for us.” For more information on, clinics, free consultations and The Wig Clinic’s involvement with the Little Princess Trust see wigclinic.com or email info@wigclinic.com.

Pasta with tomato and strawberry sauce...yes, really!
Y
ou may not be overly impressed at the initial thought of adding strawberries to pasta, but there are one or two things to bear in mind before you dismiss the idea out of hand. Firstly, if you’ve ever tasted strawberries with balsamic vinegar or even with a very light sprinkling of sea salt, you’ll know just how well they can mingle with savoury flavours.
Secondly, if the idea of ‘fruit and pasta’ seems intrinsically wrong with you, then just remember that tomatoes are a fruit themselves. So are peppers. In fact, they’re berries. This is in stark contrast to strawberries which not only aren’t actually berries, they’re not even true fruits! So before you decide that this recipe isn’t for you, leave your fruit and vegetable prejudices to one side and take a leap into the unknown with this tangy, tasty treat.
Ingredients Serves: 4 • ¼ cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling • 1 large tin of whole peeled tomatoes, drained • 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes • Kosher salt or sea salt • 1 pound strawberries (preferably fresh) cleaned and cut into quarters • 2 teaspoons sugar • Enough pasta for four people: spaghetti works well, as
does penne or conchigliette • ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced • 1 cup fresh ricotta cheese • Freshly ground black pepper Preparation • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium–high heat. Add tomatoes and red pepper flakes, season with salt, and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until the tomato juices have reduced slightly; this will take less
than five minutes, so don’t go anywhere! Add the strawberries and the sugar and cook down for about five minutes, stirring often, until the strawberries are soft and sauce is slightly thickened; let it cool slightly, then pulse in a food processor to a coarse purée. • Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until al dente; drain pasta, reserving one cup of the salty, starchy cooking liquid.
• Add the pasta to the sauce along with ½ cup of the cooking liquid and continue to cook, tossing and adding more cooking liquid as needed: it has starch in it which will thicken your sauce. • Keep cooking and stirring until the sauce evenly coats the pasta and is consistent throughout. • Remove from the heat, drizzle with more oil, and toss to combine. • Serve topped with onion, ricotta, and black pepper.

The Masterpiece Egg which is to be auctioned for Cork Penny Dinners. Picture by: Rob Lamb.
Taking chocolate to How’s your tolerance? the eggstreme Easter is a time for a chocolate indulgence: there’s nothing quite like cracking that brittle chocolate egg and selecting the perfect shard for your first bite, especially if you’re been a good boy or girl over Lent and have practically forgotten the taste of this rich brown food of the gods. However, your easter eggs this year are likely to pale in
comparison with a gargantuan one–off masterpiece from The Chocolate Shop in Cork’s English Market, which stands more than a meter tall and contains six and a half kilos of Belgian chocolate and marshmallows. What’s more, this vast egg has come into being for a good cause: it’s to be auctioned to support Cork Penny
Dinners, who have appealed to business owners (and chocoholics) in Cork to have a whip around for a good cause. If you’re interested in bidding for a once–in–a–lifetime chocolate experience, contact The Chocolate Shop on 021 425 4448, but don’t forget to reserve the week after Easter to eat it!
For some people, foods others take for granted can be a recipe for disaster, causing symptoms ranging from upset stomach to skin conditions, headaches, joint pain and wheezy breathing. Food intolerance begins when the digestive system is no longer able to process particular foods. The by–products can cross into the blood and spread throughout the body, creating a toxic effect.
Intolerance can build up so slowly you may not even link cause and effect. This ‘delayed reaction’ can make intolerance hard to diagnose, but Phelan’s Pharmacy in Blackrock can zero in with a quick test. These life–changing tests can make a huge difference to sufferers, and The Cork News in association with Phelan’s Pharmacy is offering a chance to have your intolerances identified. To
enter, email comp@thecorknews.ie with your name, address and phone number and answer this question: How does food intolerance begin? The winner of the Fitzwilliam Food Test, worth €255, will be announced in next week’s edition of The Cork News. Please note that all food intolerance testing should be undertaken under the guidance of your doctor. Call 021 4358595 to find out more.

EBO HOME RESCUE WILL BUILDYOU AN AMAZING EXTENSION ON TIME AND WITHIN BUDGET Confusing and complex mortgage criteria mean many people have decided to stay in their current house rather than buying again. Savvy homeowners choose to maximise their space, turning their house into a dream home with a clever, well–designed extension. Building work in Ireland can be notoriously frustrating, with sub–contractors evaporating into thin air to ‘finish another job’ in the middle of your build. If you want to have a completely hassle–free, guaranteed positive experience, then there’s one company that can get the job done: Ebo Home Rescue. “We do everything, from start to finish”, explains Ebo Home Rescue owner Mike Boyle. “We have an entire Ebo family at your disposal, comprised of an interior architect; plumbers, electricians, builders, and more….and I’m a civil engineer. We adopt you into our Ebo family for the duration of the project; we see you every day until the job is done. We practically live with you!” As their business model allows Ebo Home Rescue to control all of the elements needed to build your extension, they are able to manage all of the moving parts and you will never, ever have to worry about anyone not showing up, or de-prioritising you. You and your extension are all that matters to the Ebo family until the last lot of dust has been swept away and your gleaming new addition is finished. The Ebo experience is unlike any other. “Building can be complicated, as some things require planning permission — for instance, any windows overlooking a neighbour in an upper story of an extension — and there are many regulations about what can and can’t be done”, explains Mike. “We’ll provide advice and a guiding hand to help you realise your vision, find the most cost– effective way to go about it, start work and get the job done on time and within budget.”
For a limited time Ebo Home Rescue will include the services of their interior architect free of charge to help you design an amazing extension. If you’d love to make the most out of your house and turn it into the kind of home you’ve always wanted, without any broken promises or missed deadlines, do the sensible thing: call Ebo Home Rescue today on 021 2348524 or visit ebohomerescue.ie.

On average 23 children contact the service each day to talk about bullying, with an increasing number of those calls related specifically to cyberbullying. “The solution is not to remove or ban technology,” says Gráinne Long, CEO of the ISPCC: “rather to teach
children to be safe online, and support parents to understand and manage risks online. Bullying online can be pervasive, with no ‘let up’. A single message about a child is sometimes repeated by a network of perpetrators, often leaving children feeling deeply isolated.” The ISPCC has a full set of resources on its website aimed at supporting children, young people and parents on how to cope with cyberbullying, go to ispcc.ie/shield to know more.
Beat PMS This is National PMS Awareness Week, and surveys carried out to learn more about it have revealed some surprising insights into how Cork women deal with a difficult issue, with almost 80% who responded saying that PMS has “prevented them from being their best selves”. Four in ten Cork women regularly suffer from PMS,
Cork Cancer Help Programme
Mind your mind The concept of mindfulness has been gaining a lot of traction lately, emphasising that we need to be more aware of our own thoughts and feelings, how our environment is affecting us, even the feeling of our bodies and our posture. Thursday, April 2nd will see a lecture on mindfulness in Cork, hosted at the Kingsley Hotel by irishpsychology.com and featuring Timothy Sweeney. The benefits of mindfulness, as established by research, are both physical and mental, including a reduction in stress and pain management. “It’s a method of mental train-
and one fifth of those have had to take time off work because of the condition. Meditation, herbal teas, fresh air, and avoiding stress can all help to deal with the emotional changes brought on by PMS, while drinking plenty of water, topping up on B vitamins and staying active can all help to make the physical symptoms less acute.
The Cork Cancer Help Programme is for anyone over 18 years who has had diagnoses of cancer. It is a 10 week programme of weekly 2 ½ hour session. It is modelled on the Cancer Help Programme in Commonweal, San Francisco, USA.
ing,” says Cork consultant psychologist Dr Gillian Moore– Groarke, who has organised the free public lecture to celebrate 25 years in practice. “You can practise it anywhere, bringing mindfulness awareness to whatever you are doing, be it sitting on a bus or train, eating, going for a walk.” Register for the lecture and find out more details at 021 434 3073 or at irishpsychology. ie.
Following your diagnoses of cancer you may be left with some questions such as, You may find that the supports you had before your diagnoses were fine but your needs have changed and they might not be a support now, how do you find out what your needs are now and the support you need? You are also finding that the doctors may cure you but how do you heal? You can measure your pain on a scale of 0 to 10 but how do you measure your suffering and what to do with it? You may think about death and dying but it’s the elephant in the room, how can you talk about it? How can you stay as well as you can and what exercises can you do? These questions are explored and discussed during the 10 week programme. There is a fee of €200 and assistance is available to meet this cost on request.
Walk in Ballincollig to support Parkinson’s sufferers Actor Tom Hickey is encouraging everyone in Cork to support World Parkinson’s Day by participating in an awareness– raising Unity Walk in Ballincollig on Saturday, April 11th. Tom, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, urged as many people as possible to make the effort and show solidarity with the
estimated 9,000 Irish people living with PD. Tom is one of Ireland’s most successful stage actors and he is fondly remembered for his role as Benjy in RTÉ’s hugely popular The Riordans. “It is vital for people to know the symptoms of PD and to speak to their doctor if they have any concerns,” said Tom.
Parkinson’s primarily affects movement and is most commonly diagnosed in people aged over 60, but can also affect younger people. Symptoms to look out for include tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement, freezing, dry mouth, speech and language problems, fatigue and mood changes.

Great Outdoors
27 March 2015
All things wild and wonderful: The Great Outdoors Now that the clocks are going forward and the days are longer, it’s the perfect time to consider stretching your legs and exploring all the magnificence that Cork has to offer. Whether you’re into walking, climbing, cycling, kayaking, camping or even glamping, it’s all out there: here’s our take on the best of The Great Outdoors in Cork!
Do it the Ballyhoura way
Coasting along Cork’s coast is over 1,000 kilometres long, following a jagged line from the mouth of the mighty Blackwater at Youghal along the Celtic Sea and then around the rocky turn of Baltimore, with Sherkin and Cape Clear standing guard, into the vast and wild North Atlantic before round-
ing Kilcatherine Point and following the Beara Peninsula up past lonely Ardgroom to where it joins with Kerry. In those 1,000 kilometres, our coastline holds a vast store of treasure. Coves, inlets, bays and beaches line the route — including Inchydoney, Ireland’s best beach
— along with caves and crags, sentinel rocks and centuries of wrecks. It is one of Ireland’s greatest resources, and no matter where you are in Cork it’s never more than an hour’s drive away. When it comes to The Great Outdoors, it’s hard to beat. Why not start a coastal diary, and aim to see
as much of it as possible over a few weeks, months or even years? You can follow it by car, on foot, by boat, by kayak and by bike, and eventually boast that you’ve gone the long way around from east Waterford to south Kerry, having seen some of the very best that the planet has to offer on the way!

WALKING FESTIVAL 2015
If you have any love at all of walking, the outdoors, great views and great company, then you ought to be seriously excited about the Ballyhoura International Walking Festival, taking place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. That’s plenty of time to wear in some new walking shoes and get yourself in shape to see some of Cork’s most impressive scenery, joining over 1000 other walkers. Ballyhoura — straddling the Cork/Limerick border — is renowned for its forgiving terrain married to spectacular views and a warm, warm welcome.
Part of the festival’s success is the range of walkers it caters for, from casual strollers right up to the most determined mountain stompers from all over the world. Participants will be in the company of local experts who will tell them all about the heritage, archaeology, history, flora and fauna of this land apart. The festival will also feature shorter walks, ideal for little legs, so the whole family can join in the adventure. To find out more, call 063 91 300 or visit visitballyhoura.com.

Set up camp There’s nowhere more beautiful than Ireland if the sun is shining – we just never know when it will. If you’re brave, though, you can get a fantastic family holiday on a budget, see the country and have quality bonding time by going camping, glamping or camper–vanning. There are lists of campsites and campervan stops all over the Internet, and most have great facilities. If not using a site, do your research to check
out where is safe, and what the rules are on building a fire, a latrine and so on. Do bring: a small tent for extra storage; this gives you extra space in your campervan or family tent once you’re safely ensconced at a site. Layers and waterproof gear — it’s Ireland after all! Comfy bedding; store it properly so it stays fresh and dry. A tablet or dvd player, solar charger and board games.

Pod people
On your bike Not just ridiculously good exercise, cycling is arguably the best way to experience the fullness of nature as you get from point A to point B. You’ll cover a lot more ground than walking or hiking, and there’s nothing quite like the freedom of coasting along downhill (having put in the effort to get up the hill in the first place, of course!) or
stopping on a whim to take in an especially wonderful view or lovely little nook or cranny of the Rebel County which you’d never even have noticed from a car. Cork is blessed with an abundance of prime cycling routes, ranging from the tough and mountainous to the level and leisurely. You don’t even have to get too far
out of the city to see the county from a whole new angle, though the further you go, the better it gets. According to the cycling website mapmyride.com, County Cork provides 4,746 separate routes for two– wheeled warriors. We’re pretty sure nobody has ever done them all — could you be the first?
As a base from which to explore both the Sheep’s Head Way and St Finbarr’s Pilgrim Way, the Top Of The Rock Pod Páirc is hard to beat. Self–contained wooden pods set on a 48–acre farm in some of the best, most unspoiled countryside in Ireland, the páirc is a perfect way to stay close to nature while allowing for
sturdy, safe shelter, completely integrated into the local environment. For €39 midweek or €49 per night at weekends for a smaller pod — modelled on the famous Gallarus Oratory in Kerry — guests can benefit from super fresh air and the best of hearty local food before heading out for hikes which can take you all

Into The West West Cork is renowned the world over for its scenery, culture, wilderness (though never really too far from a pub or a superb restaurant!), rugged coastline, history, archaeology and pretty much everything your standard outdoor enthusiast could possibly want. The long and craggy peninsulas, the countless little bays and inlets, the gentle hills and less gentle mountains all combine to make it a really special place, especially for walkers and wanderers. That’s why,
from the middle of Spring to the early Autumn every year, you can call into a local and hear voices clamouring with accents and languages, and of course songs, from right around the world. West Cork is pretty much a one–stop–shop for everything that makes hiking and camping worthwhile. Some of Ireland’s — if not the world’s — best food producers are based here, providing everything from spectacular meats and cheeses right the way through
to ultra–pure vegan fare. The coast, from Kinsale right around to the remote Kerry border, is practically made for sailing, motorboating and kayaking, and scuba divers flock here in the Summer too. So rather than heading for the Costa Del Sol or scrambling for a good deal in a hotel, do yourself a favour: pack up your tent, lace up your boots, fill up your rucksack and head towards the setting sun for an adventure right on your own doorstep!

hen it comes to formalwear or big occasions like a wedding, it’s important to work toward the period of your dress: vintage, classical, boho or urban chic. As a general rule, if the neck line is high, hair tends to go up, and vice versa. These are
guidelines and it’s important to not over think it; always go with what works for you. Practice your chosen look a few times on the run up to the occasion, so even if you’re under pressure on the day it will be almost automatic. Most importantly, stick to the plan! Be prepared for hair emergancies. Always have a kit with extra hair clips, bobby pins, comb, fold–up hair brush and mini hairspray or travel size dry shampoo hair spray like Drynamic from Sebastian.

You see, this is simply no ordinary tea; far from it in fact, this is an amazing revolutionary tea blend which, because of its ancient Chinese herbal properties, is helping people everywhere to shed excess weight quickly, naturally and safely, simply by drinking two cups of it every day. Weight loss and detox could not be any easier than this, ever! Already, everyone wants to get their hands on this natural miracle worker and let’s face it why wouldn’t they? Already, J-Lo is singing its praises (sorry, we couldn’t resist that little pun!), blissfully sipping it till her heart’s content as she marvels at its benefits in terms of weight loss. in it so if it is good enough for two of the world’s biggest showbiz celebs, we are pretty sure it is more than just a little bit good! The good news? Yo Chi is available in Ireland, exclusive to Therapie Clinic. Clinics have reported waiting list around the country as Therapie have been struggling to meet the demand for tea both in store and online with many customers eager to aid new year weight loss using a more holistic approach. Commenting on its arrival at Therapie Clinic, Manager Jennifer O’Donovan said: “The response to Yo Chi Tea so far has been fantastic, it’s flying off the shelves! The great thing about Yo Chi Tea is it’s 100% natural, and has been proven to be effective in aiding weight loss and detox in a easy, safe way”
The blend contains Lotus Leaf, Oolong green tea and number of other ancient Chinese herbs, all of which have been specially selected because of their proven natural ability to purify and cleanse the body, and to essentially act as a nuisance in stopping the body from storing up food as excess weight, and burn excess fat which is stored in the body! Drinking just two cups of lotus leaf Yo Chi weight loss tea a day over a 14 day period will help to increase weight loss by up to 50%! Yo Chi Tea is exclusively available from Therapie Clinic nationwide, including 17B Opera Lane in Cork. Simply call them direct on 021 427 8736, to find out more or to order. Jordan: the ancient jewel of the East
R
oughly two thousand years ago, give or take, work began on what is still one of the wonders of the world; the maginificent carven city of Petra, in Jordan. Its façades and doorways, hewn from rosy rock, have been popularised in photos and films since they were first ‘rediscovered’ by the wider world in the late 19th century. Nearby is the Dead Sea, a few miles beyond that the astonishing ruins of the ancient Hellenic/Roman city of Jerash, and to the south Aqaba, sitting on a narrow inlet of the Red Sea and within sight of
Israel and Egypt. It’s a haven for scuba divers, beach lovers and high society. It’s amazing to think that these legendary destinations, and many more, such as the Dana Nature Reserve and the Bronze Age town of Madaba, are all in the same small country. Jordan is surrounded by Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel but is a remarkable contrast to all of them, having been a calm and peaceful country since independence in 1947. Petra remained undiscovered for centuries and was known only to the Bedouin people who lived there until a Swiss adventurer rediscovered it in the 1880s. When
you see the entrance from a distance you would not know that there is a natural “crack” in the mountain called the Siq; at places only six metres wide and in other places 12, wending through the rock for about a kilometre until you come face to face with the legendary ‘Treasury Building’. It certainly has the Wow Factor, and more. You could turn back at this stage and be quite satisfied but there is more to see following a tough 3km trek, ending with 800 steps up a mountain to another magnificent building; the Monastery. Amazing sights line the route and you will be greeted by native Bedouins selling

souvenirs. If you sit to speak with them they will offer you their famous (very, very sweet) tea which gives you the energy to carry on. The Dead Sea is the lowest overground point on the Earth’s surface and stories you may have heard about floating there are all true. In fact the hardest part is trying to stand up because it is so buoyant: the sea is a heavy brine, packed with salts and much denser than normal sea water. The minerals in the Dead Sea have healing properties for persons with various skin ailments, especially psoriasis, and have been a destination for health tourists for millennia.

Scout’s honour Skoda has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, and their new Scout is a powerful, practical workhorse says Seán Creedon
S
koda launched their new Octavia Scout at the Ploughing Championships in County Laois last September. It was an appropriate location, because this car is so powerful it could, if needed, replace a tractor and pull a plough for you.
The Combi, which is the station wagon version of the regular Octavia, is a massive car. The Scout is very similar, but it sits slightly higher than the Combi and there is great ground clearance. Inside the controls are much the same as the regular Octavia, which means that they
are well laid out and easy to use. There is plenty of leg room for the front and rear passengers and the boot is massive, plus you get a full–size spare wheel. It’s a lovely car to drive and travel in and there is massive space. It would be ideal if

you want to do a bit of spring cleaning and maybe shift some of that rubbish which has been piling up in the shed and move it to your local recycling centre. It would also suit a newsagent, who has to make weekly visits to the cash and carry; you can leave down the back seat for even more space. Or it might be attractive for the man who likes to do a bit of shooting and fishing. The dogs would certainly love the huge boot. As it’s a 4x4 no matter if you live at the end of a rough boreen or half way up a mountain the Scout won’t let you down. The Scout uses the fifth–generation Haldex

inter-axle clutch. The rear axle connection is controlled by the Haldex clutch control unit on the basis of signals received from the engine control unit. All very technical, but it works. It’s a very long motor and two roof rails accentuate the elongated look. The version I drove had a 2.0 litre diesel engine with 154 brake horse power. And if you want even more pulling power a 184 brake horse power version is also available. According to Skoda, the Scout has a towing capacity of 2,000 kilograms, so no trouble towing trailers, mobile homes, indeed any kind of an object that has wheels.
FROM LEHANE MOTORS ON PAGE 66 BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! OFFERS END MARCH 31ST
Initially I thought that the car was a bit expensive at €33,795, but then a friend in the motor trade pointed out that the Scout is only four thousand euro more than the top–of–the–range Mini that I drove the previous week. Point taken. We are always told that a Scout’s motto is ‘be prepared.’ So if you are ‘financially prepared’ then the spacious Scout is certainly worth a test drive. In Cork you can check out the Scout and all the other cars in the Skoda range at: Blackwater Motors, Fermoy; Eamonn Tarrant, Banteer; Finbarr Galvin, Bandon and Noel Deasy, New Mallow Road.

Renegade arrives
Why renting makes sense It’s no exaggeration to say that circumstances and persepectives have changed, and the notoriously sensitive car market has endured lots of uncertainty in the past few years. As we emerge from the financial darkness, people’s attitudes towards ownership have evolved. We’re no longer obsessed with owning the newest, best cars. In fact, in some cases, we’re not obsessed with owning cars at all. “People don’t necessarily want to get car finance,” says Europcar’s Liam O’Donohoe. “Banks don’t want to give it, either, and in major areas
public transport is getting better. It makes less sense for families to have two cars sitting there depreciating when there’s no need. Owning one and supplementing that with rental when needed is a much better option these days.” Rental prices have moved to reflect this too, and are now
better value than ever: if you only need a car a few days a month, say for a weekend away or a quick business trip, then you could have a 151 C for three days for less than €90. It’s hard not to call that a viable option! Call Europcar on 1800 948 855 to find out more.

Go Twingo, go go go! Renault’s funky Twingo — a good looking, nippy little thing, far removed from the ugly boxy styling of its predecessor — complete with punchy rear–mounted turbo engine and fun–oriented styling, is the 2015 GQ Car Awards city car of the year, having taken the title of “Best Answer To The City Car Dilemma” as the latest in a string of wins, including the equivalent accolade from Top Gear Magazine late last year, just after its release. Renault has emerged from the doldrums of humdrum styling and questionable reliability in recent years to really re–establish itself as a manufacturer of
The
Drive used car review
gorgeous, dependable, practical–yet–desirable cars (have a look at the new Clios and Meganes if you’re not convinced) and this Twingo is no exception, brimming with hot–hatch pedigree but remaining an ideal town runabout. Its rock–bot-
tom price point is just another plus; you can Twingo from just shy of €14,000. To check out this ridiculously fun, super–efficient, delightfully stylish city expert call to Kearys in Midleton and Cork or Deerpark Motors in Charleville.

E
state cars are now considered kinda sexy, as they’re incredibly handy for people with children, animals or lots of gear and give you way more bang for your buck than the standard mid–sized family car. Today I drive a swanky Opel Astra SRi Tourer 2.0 diesel from Lehane Motors. Opel dropped the ‘estate’ description in favour of the slicker ‘Sports Tourer’ moniker, and this red beauty is surprisingly slinky with black leather seats and pretty massive spec, including a rear view camera so you can have what every mother needs; eyes in the back of your head. It has handsome, curvaceous lines and loads of fabulously usable space, which I’m going to use to gather up
party favours for my daughter’s birthday this weekend: she insists on coming with me as she’s terribly exacting and a bit of a control freak. No idea where she gets it. I have a particular penchant for heated seats, although my little girl says it feels as if you’ve wet yourself and wants me to switch them off. “I’m in charge”, I say. “You think you are”, she smirks. She’ll be four on Saturday. I buy a gazillion party treats and several piñatas for 20 glucose–crazed children to beat the tar out of. I load in several bags of shopping too, and there’s still plenty of room to spare. The Astra is authoritative on corners and the SRi chassis provides a very composed ride on the motorway. With 165 BHP to draw on from the
2.0 CDTi engine, you have access to plenty of power even with a loaded caboose. Astra owners enthuse about its impressive reliability; and the spec on this model is so high you’d be hard–pushed to pick holes. It has Sat Nav; electric folding door mirrors, Bluetooth and even an advanced tyre pressure monitor; something you don’t realise the value of until your slow puncture makes you judder to a halt in the middle of nowhere. The previous owner must have only taken this 131 reg to the supermarket and back, because there’s only 9,000 miles on the clock. For €20,900 I’d call John Hayes at Lehane Motors quick, as this car won’t be around for long. Call 021 481 7700 or see www.lehanemotors.ie.

Seán Kelly launces Cork to Galway cycle
Tadhg Mac Cárthaigh’s clubman Brian O’Driscoll (pictured) is to captain the Cork U21s as they take on Tipperary in the EirGrid GAA Football U21 Munster Final on Wednesday, April 8th. Considered favourites for the Semple Stadium matchup, Cork have defeated Tipperary in the last three U21 Munster finals. Managed by Sean Hayes, the Cork U21s have progressed to the final after a three–point semifinal win over Kerry, last year’s All–Ireland Minor champions. If Hayes’s side overcome Tipperary it will be a record–equalling fifth consecutive U21 Munster title for Cork.
F
ormer world number one cyclist Seán Kelly this week launched the annual Cork to Galway Charity Cycle, which takes place Friday, June 19th, and Saturday, June 20th. Open to all levels of cyclist, participants will cover 100 kilometres a day on their way to Galway: “There is a fantastic route planned: very manageable for the leisure cyclist while still presenting a good challenge,” said Mr Kelly, launching the race. Supporting the work of Breakthrough Cancer Research, the cycle is limited to 300 participants and is now open for registration at corktogalway.com.

See what Túcan do
From playing to “about a thousand Sligo people” at their first Electric Picnic to entertaining aging 90s ravers with their Daft Punk covers, Túcan now bring their “cinematic post–folk rock” to Cork.
H
aving started out as an instrumental guitar twopiece in 2006, Túcan have gradually swelled in numbers, and are now an eight strong band. With the release of second album Towers — “an album that will live long in people’s hearts and minds” according to 2fm’s Dan Hegarty — Túcan are playing Coughlans on Thursday, April 2nd. The gig will see founding members and guitarists Donal Gunne and Pearse Feeney joined by brass and rhythm sections, and a classically trained violinist. “It doesn’t make any business sense. As everyone else is downsizing, we’re expanding!” says Donal Gunne. “We’ve always gone in the other direction, anyway. Our decisions have always been artistic, not monetary. “We need to put our best
foot forward playing live, if we take a hit financially: so be it,” he adds. Donal started Túcan with fellow Sligo man Pearse Feeney in 2006, releasing debut Aliquot Strings in 2009, which found favour in the usually–conservative trad circles. “There’s a definitely a trad element to what we do — the energy is probably trad or folk-like — but we didn’t come from trad backgrounds at all. “I grew up with Guns N’Roses, Metallica, Alice in Chains. “The iPod or Spotify generation — whatever you want to call it — all listen to everything, anyway. Genres don’t mean as much anymore,” says Donal. While the 2009 release was primarily a folk and roots affair, the band broadened their audience with the viral success of an acoustic Daft Punk cover.
Recorded on the fly and uploaded to Facebook, the cover saw Túcan share stages with Lisa Hannigan and Cathy Davey and become a fixture on the Irish festival circuit “It definitely appealed to a different crowd who were maybe a bit older, and remembered raving to The Prodigy and the like in the 90s. “It brought a lot of festival gigs, which was great. If you’re an instrumental band, you’re not going to get a lot of radio play. Playing live has always been our strong point,” says Donal. The band’s first appearance at Electric Picnic came in 2007, just a year after forming, and reception to their two performances at the festival provided a “real sense we could take things further,” Donal remembers. “Word got out that a Sligo band was playing at a small stage on Saturday afternoon. By the time we took the stage,
“Playing live has always been our strong point.” there must have been about a thousand Sligo people there. “We had an amazing show, and the organisers asked us to close out their main stage on the Sunday. “We got there at 3am and there was a DJ on before us, banging out tunes to three or four thousand people. “I was just thinking: ‘How are we going to follow this with two acoustic guitars?’ “I don’t how we did it, but we did. The crowd ended up going bananas,” says Donal.
Deciding their dance covers beloved by live audiences were “nothing more than a novelty,” the band added drums and bass to their lineup and began concentrating on original material. Second album Towers features one throwback to their covers past: a cover of Massive Attack’s Teardrop complete with newly–added horn section, with a video shot by one half of the Rubberbandits. “Bobby Chrome is actually a great filmmaker. He shot a video for our song As it Was — a really weird, crazy, odd video — and now he’s done another for us. “He’s got a really twisted imagination. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it’s very much to ours,” says Donal. Released next week, the video launch follows the release of Towers, Túcan’s first LP with their four new members. Produced by God Is An Astronaut guitarist Torsten
Kinsella, the record sees the band move away from their trad/folk beginnings, with classically trained violinist Claudia Schwab and a three– piece brass section debuting as Túcan members. The influence of producer Kinsella, whose Wicklow– based post–rock band are considered one of the word’s foremost instrumental rock bands, has resulted in a record more representative of the band’s listening tastes. “I’ve always been a rocker, really. I think that comes across on Towers. I don’t think I’ll be asked about my ‘trad background’ anytime soon,” says Donal. Tickets for Túcan’s 9pm Coughlans show on Thursday, April 2nd are priced €10 from tickets.peoplesrepublicofcork.com. Towers is released today, Friday, March 27th on Quiet Arch Records. Being pregnant at a young age is hard but even harder when you gain so much weight, you feel very low in yourself and give up on hope that you will ever lose the weight. After a few weeks I went to Women's Fitness Plus for advice and from the second I walked in they were so helpful. There were tears and moments I wanted to give up but everyone made sure I got the results I wanted. Knowing that I can go into a clothes shop and not worry if their clothes will fit me is amazing.
