Mallow Garden Festival ...
PREMIER GARDEN SHOW OF THE SOUTH
THIS WEEKEND
Scene from a winning garden at the Festival 2014.
Ireland’s only Garden Festival with 25 new mature landscaped gardens ... Established gardens are imbued with an elusive spirit, a lingering presence of the passing years, and whilst no one could argue that the permanent gardens at Mallow racecourse are in any way ancient, they do seem to have a kindred spirit. Born of commerce I must admit, the gardens hide a wish to exist in perpetuity! And perhaps they will, for this coming June 5th 6th and 7th the festival is once again set to attract the gardeners of Munster and beyond. The three day event will have all the garden related attractions of the past; over 20 display gardens (many completely new) plant specialists, trade stands for pottery, decking specialists, unusual exotics, water plant specialists, plus free demonstrations and presentations from a team of well-known personalities and a flower arranger. Boasting 3 million plants in display the show this year is expected to attain the kind of notoriety and success it achieved in its inception-with none of the upsets or disappointments. Additional attractions include the use of the new Pavilion for the demonstrations and presentations, a Vintage Car and Motorcycle display, Arts and Crafts, an Artisan Food Hall, Marigold Active Retirement area, a Pet Show, and on the Saturday, a visit from RTE to film part of their series ‘A Taste of Success’. The permanent gardens are once again being completely re-vamped under expert landscaper Darren Drummond, and whilst some will retain features from their original design all except one, will have new additional plantings.
Darren’s new ‘Children’s Christmas Garden’ will give followers of the very successful ‘Frozen’ an insight into the magical world of snow and a frozen landscape! As in the past, there will be flashes of brilliance from designer Larry Lynch. His creations are normally of the type you would love to take home at the end of your visit. Another gifted gardener Chris Heffernan is constructing a special interest garden on the site of the Turtle Mound garden of old. Work is already well advanced on this. If security in the garden is important then the re-worked display of Ger Baker’s trellis-topped aluminium fencing, outdoor storage bins and summer houses will surely tempt and delight. More again will possibly be quirky, outré, expensive, impractical, and impossible to replicate at home. All however will draw comment and speculation and that’s what the show is all about. The Mallow Homes and Garden Show is as always, located on a major arterial road and rail network and you can arrive by car, rail or shuttle bus service. There are other reasons of course why this splendid annual event sets it apart from all the other festivals around the country. For starters there’s unlimited spacious parking on site, which is totally free to all exhibitors and visitors. Just imagine what this one facility would cost you elsewhere! Then there’s the fact that children go free and the cost per adult remains a mere €10.Tell me where else today can you get a whole day’s gardening entertainment for this kind of admission price? Come see the gardens, meet your friends, peruse the plant stalls, sit for the presentations and enjoy the food area. Wet or dry, Mallow is the place to be on June 5th 6th and 7th.

split has reportedly emerged within the R i g h t 2 Wa ter campaign — a broad alliance of political parties, trade unions and community groups — over organisers’ failure to appeal for mass non–payment of water bills, advocated by many members as a vital part of the anti– charges movement. Members of Cork’s anti–water charges campaign, who have organised a ‘Burn The Water Bills’ protest march which will take place in Cork this Saturday, have directly questioned the motives of Right2Water leaders who refuse to publicly advocate a payment boycott.
The Non-Payment Network has been established by the People Before Profit Alliance (PBPA), the Anti-Austerity Alliance (AAA), and other members of the Right2Water group to push for a payment boycott. Their decision to hold a Dublin meeting six days before Right2Waters’s policy conference has been criticised by Cork Right2Water member Jim O’Connell, but he insists that the broader movement remains unified: “It’s unfortunate it’s being portrayed as a spilt, as the Right2Water campaign had never agreed to advocate for a non–payment strategy,” Mr O’Connell, a member of PBPA, told The Cork News, before going on to encourage a boycott: “Our main tool at the moment is non–payment, as there has been a lull in demonstrations. We need to push
ahead with non–payment,” he said. A Cork anti–water charges leader who did not wish to be named told The Cork News that it is “strange to see leaders of an anti–water charges movement refusing to advocate non–payment.” He accused Sinn Féin — a Right2Water member — of refusing to publicly push for a mass boycott because they are “hedging their bets” ahead of the next general election. When this was put to Mr O’Connell, he said “it’s a possibility.” “If somebody doesn’t support a mass boycott, I don’t know how they can justify not paying themselves. I’m puzzled by their approach, and that’s why I question their motives,” Mr O’Connell added. continued on page 2

Editor’s letter
S
eeing the fidgety trepidation and wide–eyed apprehension of students on the way to their Junior Cert and Leaving Cert on Tuesday brought back a lot of memories. It’s been 20 years now since I did my Leaving Cert, sweltering in the June heat in Glanmire, and 23 since I bluffed my way (I finally feel comfortable admitting that I did hardly any study for it…sorry Mam) through the Junior Cert. My most vivid memory of each is the last day of each round of testing. More specifically, the first five minutes after each final exam. If you’re a Junior or Leaving Cert candidate reading this — or more likely, if you’re the parent of a Junior or Leaving Cert candidate reading this — then hold on to the realisation that that’s probably going to be the main memory for you too. The Junior Cert is important in its own way, but it’s certainly not the lynchpin on which your entire future rests. I’ve heard more than one story this week about 15– and 16–year–old boys and girls driving themselves to distraction over an exam which, in the very grand scheme of things, won’t make a huge difference. It’s an important watershed on the way to adulthood, but don’t get too caught up in the hysteria. I can remember plainly, after failing English Paper I in ‘the mocks’, the anxiety of heading in to the exam hall for the real thing and being wary of putting pen to paper for far too long. Looking back, whichever draconian Hauptsturmführer had been assigned to our class cut a swathe through everyone and made us all fear for our futures, but that didn’t matter. That gruesome “F”, I was sure, meant that I was destined to live the life of a shoeless hermit. Somehow, we all rose above it to do rather well — thanks in no small part to our overworked English teacher Bean Mhic Cárthaigh — and in retrospect, the “official” Junior Cert results had no more bearing on any of our futures than our terrifyingly low mocks marks. The Leaving Cert is, of course, a different category of beast. It really can influence your future, but resist the temptation to fall into despair. By now you’ve done all you can do. The best advice you’ll get between now and the end of your exams is to revise and relax. Eat a healthy diet, drink lots of water, eschew sugary foods and coffee, try to ensure some “me time” for yourself every day, get some fresh air and exercise and get plenty of sleep. Whether or not third–level education is on your agenda, the effort you put in for these next few days will have a bearing on the rest of your life, but don’t forget that everyone older than you has also had their life planned out for them by someone in their late teens, and they’ve done more or less ok. Even though most teachers and many parents have been trying to hammer the message home that without a good Leaving you can kiss your college dreams goodbye, remember: that’s simply not the case. Over the week I heard Newstalk’s Jonathan Healy speaking to the President Elect of Trinity’s Student Union, Lynn Ruane, who left school as a single mother at the age of 15. She is absolutely inspiring, and I’d heartily recommend that you read her story. She’s an addiction counsellor, and is studying philosophy, political science, economics and sociology. Lynn left school after her Junior Cert, never did a Leaving Cert, has accomplished much and will accomplish more. I can’t think of a better role model for anyone who feels like the Leaving is the be all and end all of their hopes and dreams. It’s not. That said, however: good luck to all of you, and I hope you make yourselves proud.

The parting of the Waters continued from page 1 On the issue of why Sinn Féin hasn’t called for a mass boycott of water charges, a senior spokesperson for the party responded: “Sinn Féin will stand with all in the community opposed to water charges. We will not allow the campaign to be divided and weakened. The decision to register or not with Irish Water is a personal one reflecting each individual family. Sinn Féin will not advocate a Won’t Pay campaign because it is not necessary — charges can be defeated on the street and at the ballot box — and because it runs the risk of increasing hardship on families. Non–payment may incur consequences upon already suffering families and as such, Sinn Féin does not believe in advocating a mass boycott. (We) say that each
individual and each family must make that choice for themselves.” Jim O’ Connell, who is the PBPA general election candidate for Cork South Central, said the movement can accommodate those who advocate non–payment and those who don’t: “We need to adopt a common platform, not fight over whose way is better. Right2Water consists of a lot of disparate groups. Some advocate non–payment, some don’t,” he continued. However Noreen Murphy, a member of Ballyvolane Says No and Right2Water, told us that the Non–Payment Network places too much emphasis on a boycott of water bills: “Using non–payment as a standalone tactic is like trying to make a cake with one ingredient. Non–payment is all the Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party
talk about. They don’t talk about a whole lot else,” she said. Ms Murphy also insisted that the Right2Water campaign has not split, saying it “works extremely closely with unions, political parties and communities.” Ms Murphy’s sentiments were echoed by Councillor Ted Tynan of the Cork Workers Party, who said that while he will attend Saturday’s protest he does not feel non–payment is the movement’s most powerful tool: “The Socialist Party goes into communities opposed to water charges and treats them like cannon fodder ahead of the general election with the simplistic slogan of ‘We Won’t Pay.’ We will attend on Saturday, and issue our own leaflets, that highlight our opposition to the privatisation of Irish Water.” Socialist Party Councillor Mick Barry, a member of
the AAA and the Non–Payment Network, disputed Cllr Tynan’s claims: “There is clearly a strong sentiment for a boycott in working class communities and among anti–water charges activists. It’s common sense that mass refusal gives an important boost to working class communities,” he told The Cork News. Responding to suggestions that non–payment may not be the most effective tool at the anti–water charges campaign’s disposal, Cllr Barry added: “That sentiment is out of step with the feeling of working class communities where a boycott is already taking hold.” Cllr Barry added that those choosing to boycott their first four quarterly water bills will not face any financial penalty, and that it would be “political suicide” to prosecute non–payers.

New deadline for city beautification grants
“The rate of cancer in Cobh is 37% higher than the national average.”
The deadline for applications to grant schemes aimed at improving the aesthetics of the city has been extended. The new deadline of Friday, June 19th is for the Painting Grant Scheme 2015 and Architectural
Conservation Area (ACA), targeted at the city centre from Blackpool to Barrack Street, and the Oliver Plunkett Street Grant Scheme. Cork City Council outlined that “well kept and attractive” buildings “improve the
appearance of an area, and also help to instil pride and a wider confidence boost to an area”. The financial incentives are to encourage people to paint and undertake repairs to their buildings.
Multi–million boost for Cobh Harbour clean–up The government is to allocate a total budget of €61 million to complete the clean–up of the Haulbowline toxic dump in Cork harbour. The additional €21 million boost will mean the core clean–up will be finished by the end of 2015, with further work continuing until 2017 as part of an ‘all-island’ effort. “This news will come as an enormous relief to the people of Cobh who desperately want to have the entire island freed from the health implications the dump posed due to unchecked emissions
of a carcinogenic toxin, chromium VI, which came from an unlicenced landfill,” said MEP Seán Kelly. Mr Kelly has been a long– term lobbyist for action on the issue as MEP for Ireland South, and successfully brought a petition on the issue before the European Parliament in 2011 which resulted in the European Commission directing that the Irish government take action to clean up the toxic dump. “This toxic dump was a scar on the otherwise very scenic location in Ireland and while
it is difficult to measure its impact in monetary terms, no one can deny its existence has had a detrimental effect on Cobh’s tourism potential,” Mr Kelly continued. “While a baseline health study has never been carried out, the National Cancer Registry of Ireland proves that the rate of cancer in Cobh is 37% higher than the national average. Furthermore, we cannot forget the environmental and economic concerns also at the fore of the Haulbowline campaign for many years.”

ext week marks the 20th anniversary of one of Ireland’s — and the world’s — all time musical greats. Rory Gallagher, born in Donegal but raised in Cork and a familiar sight around the city in his heyday, even when he had become one of the most respected and renowned musicians of his generation, died on June 15th, 1995. The former North Mon student, famous for his amiable nature, trademark scuffed Fender Strat, epic live performances and blistering skill was just 47 years old. Now, an English playwright and actor is set to bring her tribute to Rory Gallagher to Cork to mark the anniversary of the former International Guitarist of the Year, who is buried at St Oliver’s Cemetery in Ballincollig. Liz Lucas first saw Gallagher play in her hometown of Sheffield, and her play The G-Man and Me is based on her experience that night, and the continuing influence the guitarist played in her life: “I was just starting to perform in school plays, and it had a very big influence on me. I was 16, so it was a long time ago. The play centres on the first gig: the music, the level of concentration, and the relationship between Rory and the band. “The understanding they had has incredible: the way they would watch him and

slow down when he slowed down, and speed up when he sped up. “It was just so exciting,” Ms Lucas told The Cork News. The G-Man and Me is set to have its Irish premiere on Monday, June 22nd in the Cork Arts Theatre, just after the 20th anniversary of Gallagher’s untimely death.
Performed over two nights, the play is a loosely autobiographical piece charting the life of an everyday fan, her first experience of Gallagher, and the influence he played on her life: “All the way through my life, I’ve been coming back to him. He’s been a constant, and I wanted to explore why. When I was 16, bands were smashing their guitars up, or putting on really glittery, gimmicky shows. “He just played. It was refreshing. That really appealed to me,” said Ms Lucas. While stressing the play’s broad appeal to both Gallagher fanatics and those not familiar with the bluesman’s work, Ms Lucas added: “It does carry the message: ‘Why don’t you go home and listen to him?’”

The hotel, which has attracted high– profile guests such as Bruce Springsteen, Bill Clinton and the honeymooning Kim Kardashian and Kanye West since it opened in 2007, was developed at a cost of €70m. Tom Barrett of Savills, who is managing the sale, said Castlemartyr Resort is “one of the finest hotels to ever come to the market in Ireland”: “The significant increase in domestic and overseas trips taken in Ireland has boosted Ireland’s hotel trade and Castlemartyr has huge potential,” he said, adding that strong demand from both local and international buyers is expected.” The hotel is located on 210 acres of land, and incorporates a historic 18th century manor house. It lies adjacent to a 13th century castle originally built by the Knights Templar under Richard, Earl de Clare, better known as Strongbow. It also features an 18 hole inland

Cork experienced its wettest May day in over 40 years last month. New statistics released by Met Éireann reveal 38.5mm of rainfall was recorded at Cork Airport on Saturday, May 2nd, the biggest one–day rainfall in May in the entire country, and the wettest May day in Cork since 1973. In contrast, the highest mean monthly temperature in Ireland in May was 11.0°C, recorded at Roche’s Point and Sherkin Island. In spite of the May downpours, Valentia Observatory

Potential witness to Karen’s murder Glasgow detectives investigating the murder of a Cork nurse in April have been speaking to a potential witness about the case. Karen Buckley (24) from Mourneabbey in north Cork, who was studying occupational therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University, disappeared during a night out in the city in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 12th. Friends raised the alarm after she failed to return to her rented home, leading to a four–day intensive search that ended with the recovery of her body on High Creighton Farm, to the north of the Scottish capital. Alexander Pacteau (21) has been charged with her murder. A plea had gone out on Thursday for the potential witness to come forward, with Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr emphasising that she “may have information that could assist with

our investigation.” Now DS Kerr and the team pursuing the investigation have made contact with the young woman, who was spotted on CCTV close to The Sanctuary, the nightclub where Karen was last seen. Police Scotland have stressed that she is in no way connected to Karen’s murder but hope she may provide vital evidence which could expedite the case and help the police with their ongoing enquiries. Alexander Pacteau, who had initially approached police to identify himself as the man with whom Karen had been seen leaving Glasgow’s west end on the night she disappeared, has been charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice, as well as with her murder. He remains in custody while DS Kerr’s team investigate the crime further and work on building a case.

Daytripper John Lonergan is a six–time World Champion Irish dancer from Ballyphehane. He's performing with Riverdance at Live at the Marquee from Thursday, June 11th to Sunday, June 14th.
W
e normally have mornings off when we’re on tour, so I wake up around 10am or 11am, always thinking the same thing: ‘‘Oh my God, I was dancing last night; my legs are killing me!” I find that once I get up and walk around for a bit, they’ll be fine. I’ll have a bowl of corn flakes, or tea and toast, or yoghurt with a bit of fruit, and organise to meet a group of the other dancers. I joined Riverdance three years ago. I can remember watching the videotape of the 1994 Eurovision performance as a child, and and trying to do what Michael Flatley and Jean Butler were doing. Obviously, at that time I thought it was the hardest thing of all time, and wasn’t able to do it. I always wanted to be in the show, but I never thought it would actually happen. You just assume that you have to be scouted, or that only the really amazing people get picked. It’s the pinnacle. There’s nothing higher than Riverdance, really. I sent in a dance CV and a video of me dancing, saying I was interested in joining. I went for a group audition and was then told I was accepted on to a waiting list, and that’d I’d be notified of any upcoming tours. I didn’t think anything was going to happen, so I took a part in a different show. I was touring in Germany when I got the call asking me to go to Australia and New Zealand. It didn’t hit me for a while. When it finally did, I was buzzing. I couldn’t believe they’d actually called me. The dance troupe turns into a family when we’re away because we’re all we have. We all get on; we’re great friends. Don’t get me wrong, there are obviously arguments — it wouldn’t be healthy if there weren’t.
“I always wanted to be in the show, but I never thought it would actually happen.”
A group of us will go for lunch in whatever city we’re in. We’ll usually find a Starbucks, and I’ll have a hot chocolate or caramel macchiato with a chicken wrap. Our diet is important in that obviously, you can’t be going away and having ten McDonald’s a week, but because we’re so fit and naturally small it’s not a major issue. We do look after ourselves, but not to the point of worrying about cutting things out of our diet. If our show’s at 7pm, we have to be in the venue for about 5pm. When I go in for a warm–up

an hour before the show, I start to get nervous. The nerves really kick in five minutes before the show, when you’re standing at the side of the stage waiting to go on. I’d feel anxious — in a good way, though; not frightened. It’s sort of like that ‘butterflies’ feeling. Being onstage in front of 2,000 people just feels great. It’s the simple things like looking out at the end of a show and seeing a woman in the front row crying. She’s so happy she’s seen the show and the music has made her really emotional. When you see things like
that, you pinch yourself, and say: “We’ve done that. We’ve made that woman cry from happiness.” That feeling is amazing, and it makes you appreciate it so much more. It feels brilliant. I actually can’t believe Riverdance is coming to my home city. Last year when we were touring the UK, so many dancers got to perform in their hometowns. I was saying to a couple of my friends “This is never going to happen for me.” It was about two weeks after I said that, we were told Cork was on our schedule. I couldn’t be-

lieve it. It’s going to be a very special, and will be a proud moment for me. Being the only Cork person in the show is going to be insane. You’re always wrecked after a performance. It’s just one of those things; it’s hard. When you come home from a show, you’re always on a buzz and don’t really feel that tired, but when that buzz wears off your legs are killing you. They’re throbbing. You go into a drowsy state. After a show, six or seven of us will try to find a restaurant and go for a meal. Vapiano is my favourite place to eat. It’s a
pasta place, and I’ll usually go for a chicken arrabiata. When we’re eating, we’ll have a normal chat and kind of forget about what we’ve just done. That’s the only way to do it. If you were to go straight to bed it just wouldn’t work. By going out and being social, that brings us down gently. Touring can be hard at times, and you have to love it. It is my life. I would’ve put my dancing before school: not a great thing to say but I did. I always knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Ceiling collapses at CUH The collapse of part of a ceiling at the ophthalmology out–patients department in Cork University Hospital led to appointments for a number of patients being cancelled yesterday, Thursday. The Health Service Executive outlined that some ceiling tiles were water damaged in the reception area of the department, and subsequently gave way. “There has been no disruption to casualty ophthalmology patients as a result. This service is continuing as normal,” said the HSE in a statement. The local maintenance department responded immediately to the incident and worked to replace the damaged ceiling tiles. The fire services also provided industrial fans to assist in drying out the unit.

Lack of upgrade will badly hurt Cork’s economy The N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road upgrade project, recognised as a key piece of national infrastructure by successive governments, has not been duly prioritised, according to the Cork Chamber. The proposed upgrade would run from the Bloomfield interchange, bypassing Shanbally
and Ringaskiddy village, before linking directly with eastern side of the Port of Cork’s container terminal. With 26,000 vehicles currently using the road daily, Conor Healy of Cork Chamber highlighted the upgrade’s importance: “The N28 is a hugely impor-

tant in that it will form the main corridor to a significant industry base in Ringaskiddy. “We’re also now seeing development of the maritime industry in the region. When you combine all that, you have significant evidence from a costbenefit analysis to see the N28 developed,” he told The Cork
News. Mr Healy said that government commitment to the upgrade work has been lacking: “The N28 has consistently been identified as a key piece of infrastructure. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much in the way of real commitment.” An Bord Pleanála’s recent
decision to award planning permission to the Port of Cork’s €100 million redevelopment of Ringaskiddy harbour has further heightened need for work to be carried out on the N28: “Further development over and above this phase will require will the N28 to be in place,” Conor Healy said.
The road will be worth up to €231.9m to the local economy over the next 30 years and would create nearly 900 jobs during the construction phase. However, without an upgrade potential future loss in trade through the Port of Cork counld amount to nearly €23m by the year 2033.

Meanwhile, Flybe is commencing its new route to Cardiff tomorrow, Saturday, from Cork Airport. The service will initially operate once a week — on Saturdays — before increasing to twice weekly from September.
A Cork man has warned fellow landlords in the city of the dangers of letting property to a family he says destroyed his house, leaving bin bags full of maggot–infested faeces on the floor. Landlord Val Calnan told Cork’s RedFM of his experience leasing a house to a family with three young children who, having blocked the property’s three toilets, used black bags instead. According to Mr Calnan the house was in “pristine” condition when first let, and he is now facing a repair bill of €6,000. All of the house’s appliances now need to be replaced, and significant cleaning needs to be carried out to restore the property to its former state. Mr Calnan said he decided to go public with his experience so to warn other Cork landlords to be aware that this family are currently seeking a house to rent on the city’s north side. Cork’s hoteliers have called for increased route development support for Cork Airport to encourage greater air connectivity into the south of Ireland and enable the region to live up to its full tourism potential. Darragh Brady, Chair of the Cork branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said that additional, ring– fenced funding is now required to support new airline routes and increase passenger numbers at the airport. “Increased connectivity into Cork is critical if the region is to attract more holidaymakers and business travellers,” said Mr Brady. Management at Cork Airport have outlined their commitment to securing new routes and growing traffic following the disappointing news that Czech Airlines will not proceed with proposed new routes to Prague and Ibiza, due to commence this month for the summer season. Cork broadband provider expanding horizons Cork internet innovators Nova Broadband have announced significant expansion plans, widening their scope across a large proportion of the south of the island in the coming months. Nova has invested over €250,000 into broadening its customer base into Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, as well as beyond Munster into Kilkenny and Laois, as the first phases of an expansion throughout Ireland. The move will mean rural broadband customers, who have suffered for years with slow fixed line, 3G and satellite broadband, will finally see investment into their broadband service which to date has been extremely poor in many areas. Nova Broadband Managing Director Dave McDonald said “I started the business in 2004
“We are thriving and continuously growing.” as a one–man show. Eleven years on, we are thriving and continuously growing at a rate we could not have predicted. We are going from strength to strength achieving record months every month and double-digit growth in the last three years. We feel now is the right time to broaden the service we offer outside of Munster. We are very excited.” The roll out of the first phase of the expansion is expected to be completed in July, creating 20 new jobs.

Marty will be having a ball
Final frontier coming to CIT It’s been announced that Cork Institute of Technology is set to host the International Space University (ISU) Annual Space Studies Programme (SSP) session in summer 2017. The SSP is an intense nine–week programme that allows participants to develop skills in all aspects of space programmes and enterprises, including space engineering and space physical sciences.
April’s Cork Person of the Month Marty Morrissey is set to MC the inaugural County Mayor’s Midsummer Charity Ball on Saturday, June 13th. Morrissey, who was born in Mallow, is sure to provide entertainment at the event according to Mayor Alan Coleman: “He’s a fun guy, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously, so people can expect a fair bit of slagging. “We got a real surprise when we find out that he’s a Cork man. He hasn’t taken the Clare jersey off yet, but he might throw a Cork jersey over his shoulder,” he told The Cork News. The ball is to be held in Cork County Hall, which adds extra “excitement,” says Cllr Coleman, and will benefit Marymount Hospice: “I felt the office of the County Mayor should be involved in fundraising. The Marymount Hospice’s cause is close to every community, and we’re delighted to support their work,” said Cllr Coleman. The Alex Ott Appeal and Friends of Jamie Wall will also benefit from the event, that will see Cork County
Recent SSP’s have been held in Beijing, Florida and Montréal, and the decision to hold the 2017 session in Cork has been welcomed by CIT’s president: “CIT is delighted to host SSP 2017 and we look forward to an event that will live long in the memory and have a positive impact not only on the participants, but also on our own faculty and students,” said Dr Brendan Murphy.
Pictured at the launch of the County Mayor’s Midsummer Ball, which takes place in County Hall on June 13th, are Yvonne O’Mahony, County Mayor Alan Coleman and Fergal Harte.

Irish in decline in Cork’s Gaeltachts A report carried out by Údarás na Gaeltachta suggesting Irish won’t be the primary language in Gaeltacht areas in ten years’ time has found that just 37% of Cork Gaeltacht residents are daily speakers of the language. The report notes that are 3,403 residents in the Cork Gaeltacht, just 1,269 of whom use the language on a daily basis. 67% is generally considered the minimum threshold for language survival, and with only 21 Gaeltacht regions nationally reaching this figure, the report concludes that Irish will no longer be the dominant language in the Gaeltacht by 2025. The research, based on census figures for 2006 and 2011, further found that the language is becoming confined to an academic setting; a point that is recognised by a Cork Údarás na Gaeltachta representative: “There are naíonraí, primary and secondary schools that are all Irish speaking in the

Cork Gaeltacht. Young people in these areas are learning strong Irish. The problem is, where do they speak it when they walk out the school door?” Rachel Ní Riada told The Cork News. According to Ms Ní Riada, for the language to survive, establishing an Irish–friendly environment outside of ed-
ucational settings is critical: “For a language to survive, it needs to be used in every domain: the bank, the shop, the hairdressers. Otherwise, users’ vocabularies will shrink. “People in Gaeltacht areas are bombarded with English through television, technology and other media.
“It means that certain environments in Gaeltacht areas aren’t as Irish–friendly as they once were,” she said. Ms Ní Riada added that the language’s continuing decline can be partly attributed to geographical trends: “There has been a huge influx of people into Gaeltacht areas over the last number
of years. It’s the same in any town across Ireland. Population profiles are changing,” she said. Sinn Féin’s MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada described the report’s findings as “a damning indictment of the strategies implemented by successive governments.” “Where we needed sustained
commitment to the language from political leaders, we got tokenism and stroke politics instead. Given this lack of commitment to our Irish language community by those in power and given the lack of thought–out and measurable strategies over many years, is it any wonder that things are so bad?” she added.

Mini Museum touring west Cork A ‘portable museum’ is beginning its trek around west Cork’s islands today (June 5th), starting off at the Sherkin Island Museum before moving to Heir Island next week (June 12th) and then to Bere Island on July 17th. The Museum of Miniature has been described as a ‘pop up and wondrous’ museum of tiny artworks made to fit in the palm of your hand. It incorporates work from Irish island artists as well as
other islanders from around the world, Faroese, Saltspring and Fogo islanders from Canada, and Hawaiians among them. The tour follows on from a much– lauded exhibition in Skibbereen in 2012, which featured miniature work from 142 international artists. The residents of Sherkin, Heir and Bere also collaborated with curators Tess Leak and Marie Brett to create miniature communities.
Weather or not to wear socks In the wake of confirmation that May was one of the wettest on record (see Page 8 for more), a survey has revealed that nearly half of us are willing to pull a ‘sickie’ from work for the sake of a sunny day. The HB Ice Cream survey has also shown that 10% of people will don shorts or a skirt as soon
as the temperature hits double figures, ‘grand drying weather’ and ‘it’s Baltic!’ top our most– used weather clichés, and 25% of us are aghast at being unwillingly exposed to other people’s ‘bits’ when the weather gets warmer — bad news for the 15% who see nothing wrong with wearing swimming gear
anywhere other than the beach. Other results from the survey show that we’re unforgiving when it comes to judging others for their fake tan, socks– and–sandals combos or high heels on the beach. ‘Farmer tans’, sunburn and insect bites round out our least favourite summer experiences.

Paws for thought Every week, Cork's animal shelters are called upon to take care of our city's injured, abandoned and unwanted animals. After veterinary treatment and plenty of TLC, these rescued cats and dogs are ready to start a new life with a loving owner. If you have the budget, time, space and commitment to welcome an animal into your home, adopting a rescue animal might be the right option for you. Meet this week's furry friends of The Cork News...

What’s Left in the wake of Irish Water? Sir, In response to the AAA/ We Won’t Pay(Socialist Party) and People Before Profit (Socialist Workers Party) decision to run a rival conference to the Right2Water campaign: I find it so quite disturbing that the extremist left parties want to split the only social movement capable of effecting real and lasting change in Ireland. The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party have never really made a dent in Irish politics and here we see them trying to divert a section of the right2water movement for their own political gain. On a point of principle, I will personally never pay for water and as someone who would vehemently oppose water charges and ultimately the privatisation of our public water services I would like to make a few comments on “non-payment”: The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party (AAA/We Won’t Pay/NonPayment Network) contend that non–payment will “bring down” Irish Water. Firstly, the government want to borrow monies “off the books” for IW, and place even more debt on our shoulders. In order to do that IW needs to have revenue over 51% from charges or it will not pass the Eurostat Market Corpora-
Bambi is a five (–ish…maybe six) year old female pomeranian cross who is housetrained and spayed. She is very affectionate but unfortunately she is a little bit nervous around other dogs and so she needs to homed as an only dog. Bambi will need to live with someone who’s at home for most of the day, as she does not like being left alone. Bambi’s family are moving house and unfortunately they cannot take her with them, which is why she’s being rehomed.
Django the American Bulldog Django is 16 months old. He is great with children and other dogs but he’s a little bit ofa lady’s man and prefers the company of females. Django is looking for a family experienced with his breed, ideally. This friendly, loving boy needs plenty of exercise every day and is looking for a home with children over five. An enclosed garden is a must as Django has a bit of wanderlust!
tion Test. If 30% of families pay, that leaves 70% to collect; one option the government have at their disposal is to sell the domestic debt to debt collection agencies. Hypothetically, they could sell that debt for 50% of its value — 30% plus 35% equals 65% which brings IW over the line on the market corporation test. There are some intelligent people controlling those extremist Marxist parties; why are they misinforming the general public on this matter? Secondly, on the privatisation issue: Globally, the private, for–profit water industry is worth approximately $500 million annually. Ireland is set to become 11% wetter over the next ten years while many parts of the world are heading into catastrophic water crisis. Ireland is very attractive place to do business for water companies. If no revenue whoatsoever was to be collected by IW, I believe it could be sold off to one of the multinational water companies like Thames Water or Voelia as a bankrupt entity. Again we see the radicial Trotskyist parties of the left misinforming those who are following them. In my opinion, “non payment” will neither prevent more debt being piled on the Irish people nor prevent the

Dear Editor, A Remembrance Ceremony for the soldiers and naval personnel from Ballincollig and surrounding parishes who died in World War I will be held in Ballincollig Shopping Centre on Saturday, June 6th, at 3.00 pm. Almost 250 people from the Ballincollig area fought in the Great War and 96 of these were killed in action or died later from their wounds. The dead came from Ballincollig, Ballinora, Carrigrohane, Coachford, Crookstown, Dripsey, Inniscarra,
Kerry Pike/Clogheen, Ovens/Farran and Waterfall. Muskerry Local History Society is organising the ceremony, and all the names of the war dead will be read out by primary school pupils as part of it. The list of war dead is based on the work of local historian Anne Donaldson. All are welcome to attend the ceremony, particularly descendants of those who died in the war. Regards, Dermot Lucey
privatisation of our water and waste water services. Podemos and Syriza are offering a balanced alternative to the extremist right or left in Spain and Greece, they spread a message of hope and the possibility of a better society. Millions have come out in support of the balanced message of both those social movements. The “Right2Water” campaign has given a voice to hundreds of thousands of average people in Ireland and it has evolved into the most powerful social movement that I am likely to see in my lifetime: Families, pensioners, teenagers, workers, the unemployed, united and supported by hundreds of community groups, five trade unions and some progressive politicians. Together, we are out on the streets saying NO. NO to the privatisation of our human right to water. NO to our families being made homeless at the behest of the banks. NO the export of our children. NO to cuts in health and education. NO to corruption, cronyism and the list goes on and on. And just like other movements in Europe, Right2Water has created a spark
of hope, a spark of possibility of a better, fairer, more equal society. Why would anyone wish to divide that? Why, indeed? Noreen Murphy Ballyvolane

in Ireland for new businesses. Additionally, the number of insolvencies fell a very encouraging 85% in May of this year, compared to the same period 12 months ago, with just two companies going under last month. More than a dozen closed their doors for the last time in May 2014. “Our data is highlighting growing numbers of new businesses opening up and established businesses becoming less vulnerable to collapse” said Christine Cullen, Managing Director of Visionnet.ie. “Balance and normality is starting to return to the Irish economy.”
Blue is the colour for Cork As an island nation, it’s not surprising that Ireland is leveraging itself to take advantage of the ‘blue economy’ — maritime business, fishing, recreation, energy production and more — and as one of Ireland’s most maritime counties, it’s only natural that Cork should be playing a leading role. Our maritime economy grew by nine percent from 2010 to 2012, outstripping the country’s GDP by almost 100%. From 2012 to 2014, the blue economy continued to outperform the national economy with growth rates of eight percent, supplying 18,480 jobs. The value of Ireland’s maritime economy, the commercial opportunity it presents and its contribution to the Irish economy will be discussed at a major marine industry conference to be held early next month in Ringaskiddy: ‘Our

A weight off your shoulders Health and fitness are growth industries as we move into the second half of the twenty–teens, especially in the wake of a WHO report which says that Ireland will be one of the world’s most overweight nations by 2025. The trend is one that’s being repeated right around the world as sedentary lifestyles become more prevelant and the Internet makes it easier to do almost everything from the comfort of your armchair. That’s why it makes business sense to train in anticipation of the world’s collective “oh my god I’m fat!” moment, and luckily there’s a world–class training facility in Cork which can qualify you to work in health and fitness all over the planet. New Minds Fitness Academy, based in Glanmire, is a state–of–the–art ITEC cer-
tified college which grants qualifications recognised all over the world — leaving cert not necessary. There are also
grants available to attend the academy’s courses; for full details visit newmindsacademy.com.
MICE is mighty nice in US A delegation from the River Lee Hotel has represented Cork as part of a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) trade mission to the US and Canada recently. A contingent of Irish tourism experts crossed the Atlantic to highlight Ireland as a world–class business tourism destination. The events were attended by senior representatives of American and Canadian companies involved in organising international conferences, who were presented with Cork’s many advantages in the sector. Meet in Ireland comprises three tourism authorities — Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland — who work in partnership to promote the island as a leading conference and meeting destination.

Menu Slow-Roast, Twice-Fried Cold-rubbed Super Steak
M
ost people think they can cook a steak and, to be fair, a lot of us can. Once you’ve realised that the pan ought to be different temperatures for each cut, and that the meat absolutely, positively must be at room temperature and be seasoned several minutes before you cook it, then a basic steak isn’t too tough to master. But if you’ve got the hang of the basic unadorned rare/ medium–rare steak, then perhaps it’s time to push your boundaries a little in order to really impress your dinner guests — or to set yourself up with ultimate in carnivorous indulgence for a night in with a beer and a good film! This is quite a bit more advanced than “hot pan, decent butter and oil, salt and pepper” and will take quite a bit of time and preparation, but we think you’ll agree it’s worth it. Whether you’re using a t– bone or a porterhouse, this is hands down the best bone–in steak you’ll ever cook. To really cook like a pro, you’ll have to use a food thermometer. Ingredients • 1 2” thick, 3lb porterhouse or t–bone steak • 1 tablespoon kosher salt or sea salt (you need the big crystals, so it has to be one of
these) • 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper • Vegetable oil for frying. We recommend rape seed oil (see last week’s Menu for more) • 55 grammes or so unsalted butter • 1 teaspoon of your favourite spice mix — paprika and dried garlic are particularly good with steak; try combining them with salt, red and black pepper and some coriander and dill for a really good steak rub. Method 1. Score the steak ¼” deep all over in a crosshatch pattern, making cuts 1” apart so that the seasonings will work their way right down into the flesh. 2. Mix the salt, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl and rub all over the steak, massaging it in. 3. Up–end the steak on the flat side of the bone on a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet and chill for 12 hours. Don’t scrimp on time because you think it’s cold enough, this isn’t about temperature: chilling will dry out the surface of the meat and intensify the flavor of the rub. 4. Once the chilling is done, pop it into the freezer (still upright) and freeze
5 June 2015
for a further 24 hours. We told you this one would take a bit of time! 5. Preheat your oven to 95° C. Pour the rape seed oil into a 12” frying pan, preferably cast iron, to a depth of ¾”. It should be deep enough to come halfway up the side of steak; add a little more oil if needed. 6. Heat oil over mediumhigh until your thermometer registers 175° C. Now things start to get exciting: Transfer your steak straight from the freezer to the skillet and cook, turning once, until it’s deeply browned all over and a crisp crust has formed, about three minutes per side. There will be lots of spitting. You’ve been warned, and it’s all worth it. 7. Put the frying pan and oil to one side and transfer the steak back to the rack on a baking sheet. Roast it
in the oven until no longer frozen in the middle (the interior will still be cold but thawed enough to allow the insertion of the probe thermometer), which will take about 30– 35 minutes. 8. Meanwhile, cook the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until it foams and then browns. This will take 5–8 minutes but once it starts to brown watch it very carefully to be sure it doesn’t burn. Remove from heat and stir in your spice mix. 9. Let the whole lot cool down for 20–25 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a small bowl and discard the solid gunk that’s left over. 10. Remove the steak from the oven and spoon one– third of your delicious spice–infused butter over it, making sure to coat both sides. Poke the ther-
mometer into the center of the strip side and roast your steak, basting every 30 minutes or so with the remaining butter, until your thermometer registers 50°. 11. Remove steak from oven. Reheat reserved oil in the frying pan back to 175° over medium–high heat. Fry your steak a second time, turning once, until a deeply browned crust forms on all sides. 12. Transfer back to rack and rest for 10 minutes — the resting is absolutely vital so don’t skip this step. Frying again re–crisps your crust, locks in the juices, and develops more flavour, while standing lets the meat fibres re–expand, evening the juices out and distributing them right the way through the steak. 13. One last vital part of enjoying a steak you’ve put
so much care and attention into: invest in good steak knives. They don’t just make it easier to cut the meat, but cleanly slicing through those lovely pink fibres ensures more juice, better texture and better taste. Pour any butter and juices that have accumulated in the baking sheet over the top and serve with your choice of side — personally I’d recommend baby spuds par–boiled and finished with a quick fry in garlic and coriander butter and a nice strong–tasting peppery salad. There will be absolultely no call for pepper sauce or the like, so no need to bother with them. 14. Accompany with a not– too–strong red wine (you don’t want anything to overcome the taste of the meat) or, if you’re feeling crafty, a good hoppy IPA like Brewdog Punk.

Family 5 June 2015
Take action to combat cancer!
Stay safe this Summer The beaches are gradually — very gradually! — filling up again and that means more swimming for lots of Cork’s families. Swimming is great exercise and it’s great fun, (even when the water’s as cold as it is at the moment), but it’s also got its risks. The sea, as well as lakes and rivers, can be very powerful and deserve respect. Here are some handy guidelines to staying safe in the water this summer: First and foremost, don’t go out of your depth. Make sure you can tip the bottom with your toes at all times, and bear in mind that the bottom can drop away fast, especially at the beach or in a lake. Always swim parallel to the shore. Never swim while intoxicated. Your coordination will be impaired, as will your judgment and your stamina. You’re a danger to yourself and others. Parents: Make sure you can see your children at all times and remember; when someone is in trouble in the water it doesn’t always look like a big, splashy, dramatic affair.
A lack of movement, a lack of lifting the head out of the water, or a head bobbing just at the surface without managing to get the nose or mouth out of the water are much more danger signs than panic or frantic splashing. Never swim alone. Make sure you have some buddies with you, and if you have someone keeping you company on shore, make sure they know how to swim and know where you are at all times. Never use pool toys such as lilos in the sea. They can drift out beyond your depth or get caught in a current of wind or water in seconds. Only swim where there are buoyancy aids in easy reach and in good condition. Pay attention to the flag system on beaches; don’t swim anywhere you’re not familiar witih unless you can see lifeguards, and always follow a lifeguard’s directions. Never swim near currents or rocks, and make sure you’re not drifting too close to groynes, breakers, rocks or drain outlets when you’re swimming. Check maps and diagrams beforehand.

Our neighbours in the Kingdom have put out an invitation for anyone and everyone from Cork who appreciates a good walk and who wants to make a contribution to the battle against cancer. New treatments unveiled this very week — one based on using a modified virus to combat tumours, and anoth-
er which allows the body’s immune system to recognise and fight cancer cells — may be the most promising therapies to be developed in years, but like everything other weapon we’re using against this heart–wrenching disease, they’ll need lots of funding to make a difference.
That’s where events like the Breakthrough Cancer Research walking event come in; gathering teams and individuals to have a lot of fun, and raise money for a vital cause while they do. This year’s big events will take place along the famous Kerry Way over the course of three days at the end of this month
or nine days at the end of July. Teams can choose to make their way along a 200km route between July 18th and July 26th, and individual walkers can tackle a three–day, 71km route from June 24th to June 26th. Visit breakthroughcancerresearch.ie to find out more or to sign up.
Testing times The Junior Cert and Leaving Cert are in full swing now, and they can be stressful times for any family! Parents; now is the time for encouragement and support. Pushing your budding geniuses too hard while they’re in the middle of exam season can be a recipe for disaster, so ease off a little and make sure they’re eating well, drinking plenty of water and sleeping enough. And don’t forget that everybody needs a break
every once in a while! Instead of encouraging them to study all weekend, make sure they leave a little time for relaxing, winding down and socialising. Encourage them to cut down on sugary foods and caffeine, and try to minimise their access to social media during exam time: it’s not only a distraction, but it can do a lot of harm as the traditional exam ‘post mortem’ becomes an all– out Facebook obsession!

ormandy is known for its picturesque coastline and interesting history. With a 360–mile coastline of beaches and cliffs, some of which were those famous World War II landing points, the region combines quaint market towns, lush farmlands and historical sights. Home to many museums, galleries and the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame, immortalised by French Impressionist Claude Monet, the city of Rouen is particularly culture rich and a fascinating place to visit. The third largest port town in France, Rouen is a perfect choice for a short break away. Often referred to as the City of a Hundred Spires, William the Conqueror and Joan of Arc both died in Rouen, making it very well known as one of Europe’s historical centres. A great city to visit with a wealth of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries, Rouen is the perfect place for leisurely exploration, with four miles of restored mediaeval cobbled streets, half timbered houses and shops. The shopping

Mercure Rouen Centre Cathedral (****) Complete with a bar and lounge, this hotel is located beside the cathedral and Saint Rouen Church. All guestrooms are complete with satellite TV and luxury bathrooms. Balcony rooms are available on request.

streets have a great relaxed atmosphere, as the roads are pedestrianised and visitors can stroll at their own pace, stopping to browse the stalls and enjoy a coffee and pastry along the way. If you have an interest in history, then Rouen is a great destination for you. The market square where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake and the stone tower where she was held prisoner still exist and can be taken in whilst enjoying a drink in one of the market bars. The French writer Flaubert is partly responsible for putting Rouen on the map, as his 1860s romance novel, Madame Bovary was set in the city. Relive the romance, like Madame Bovary herself, by taking a horse drawn carriage around the city streets at dusk. On the outskirts of the city you will find the must–see ancient monuments and ruins dating back to the 1500s. Rouen’s Cathedral is one of France’s oldest churches and is flanked with carved statues, complete with three different towers, one of which is France’s tallest.

Box clever with the Juke
Mini Qashqai or giant Micra? Seán Creedon takes the Juke for a spin to find out…
I
left my wife sitting in my revamped Nissan Juke in the local supermarket car last week while I ran into the shop for a message. When I returned to the car she told me that a man had been admiring it, but said he wouldn’t buy a two–door car. Trouble is that this cute blue Juke with white trim did have four doors, but neither my wife nor the passer–by realised that the handles for the two rear doors are hidden
away. To be fair to Mrs C it was early in the week and she wasn’t really familiar with the revamped Juke at that stage. The Juke, which could be described as a smaller version of Nissan’s best–selling Qashqai, was voted Irish Continental Car of the Year for 2011. In truth it wasn’t to everybody’s liking, but then what car is? The second version comes with new front and boomerang–shaped rear LED lights, a new front grille and sporty
rear bumper. The boot size, which was the only major complaint with the first version, has been increased by 40 per cent. You now get two layers in the boot, and underneath is a mini spare wheel. The first version came in 1.6 petrol; now it’s a 1.2-litre petrol, which has much the same brake horse power. With it quirky design it could be described as having a bit of a ‘Tonka toy’ look to it. Somebody also described it as a ‘Micra on stilts.’ I think the
latter is accurate because a few years back when we had that famous heavy snow fall I drove the first version of the Juke. Our road, which has a slight incline, proved too difficult for the Juke, while my daughter’s trusty Micra was well able to cope with the frost and snow. At the front you get two huge lights which dominate your line of vision. They look like bad blisters you would get on your feet after too much walking, but they can also act as a guide to help you squeeze through a narrow space if required. Inside the cabin, clever use of the exterior colour gives the impression that you have a motor bike fitted between the
driver and front seat passenger. The ‘motor bike’ console is home to the gear lever, hand brake and various cup holders. It’s a very neat car and I really liked the high driving position, but there is a lot of black material over your head which I didn’t really like. Overall I think the Juke would be more suited for urban driving rather than long trips on the motorway. Prices start at €19,295 for the 1.5 petrol version, rising to €21,045 for the 1.5–litre diesel. Nissan has a €4,000 scrappage deal on your old car or van until July 31st, if you opt for their PCP package. I drove a very attractive blue version with a white trim, but
the beauty of the Juke is that you can personalise the car with whatever funky colours you like. And don’t forget to add the same colour to the alloys so they look the part. A word of warning, maybe you should think of the day you will be trading in the car; the next person to buy it may not be as bold a thinker as yourself. However, as the old saying goes, you can cross that bridge when you come to it. Nissan has 39 dealers countrywide and five in Cork. Check out the Juke at: Keary’s, Carrigrohane Road and Kinsale Road roundabout; Fermoy Nissan; Luceys, Charleville and Kevin O’Leary, Silversprings.

Spirits high as we await 152 C plates The motor industry continues to put in a strong showing as we approach the half–way point of 2015, with nearly every metric showing a significant improvement in terms of sales and jobs compared to the last few years. New car registrations for May are up 11% in just 12 months, bringing 2015’s total sales for new cars up a very encouraging 25% in comparison with
last year. Commercials are also doing very well, and as they’re always a good barometer for the economy in general it’s great to see a 35% sales boost for lights and a whopping 38% increase for heavies over 2014. Jobs figures in the motor industry overall continue to climb too, with 2,800 new jobs added nationwide in the first quarter of this year. There are currently nearly 45,000
people employed in the motor trade in Ireland. A note of caution has been sounded, however, about the used car and after–service markets, which are growing more modestly. Newer cars being bought means more availability and less demand for second–hands, while improved technology has slowed growth in services and after– sales work.
Astra–nomical
Hold it right there! If you’re anything like me, you’re well used to the sound of things rattling about in your boot like steam in a kettle every time you go around a corner. For me it’s usually groceries, screenwash, fuel additive, a half–full container of motor oil and, oddly enough, boots. A few weeks ago we reminded you to clear out your boots to improve fuel efficiency, but there are times when
you can wish it was a little more crowded in there, if only to stop everything from moving around. Luckily, there’s a new product on the market which, like all simple–but–effective ideas, has made us here in The Cork News go “ahhh, of course! Why didn’t I think of that?”. We didn’t, of course, but Irish inventors Michael Culleton, Alan Harrison and Ben Mil-
A few weeks ago we brought you a sneak peak at a very much under–wraps new Opel Astra. The Germans have finally revealed the 11th version of their ultra–popu-
lar small car and proudly announced that it’s 200kg lighter, fully wired (or rather wireless) for entertain-
ment, always in contact with Opel’s diagnostic servers, significantly cheaper to run and, we have to agree, pretty damn good looking.
lett did. Well–designed ‘shelving’, extra strength velcro and a selection of straps make it the best way we’ve ever seen to divide up and organise your boot, creating little standalone cargo sections to keep everything in one place. Have a look at stayhold.com for more details and to see how you can get a little more organised before you head out on the road.

Cycling legend Sean Kelly is pictured at the launch of the 13th annual Cork to Galway charity cycle in aid of Breakthrough Cancer Research. This two–day cycle takes place on Friday and Saturday June 19th & 20th.
Cycle with a legend
End of an era O’Connell to experience “new environments” After continued speculation, the IRFU and Munster Rugby have confirmed that Paul O’Connell will be released from his IRFU Munster contract after the 2015 Rugby World Cup, clearing the way for a €1.2 million move to Toulon. Confirming his international retirement following the World Cup, the second-row said: “After the World Cup I would like to experience new environments, and it is my genuine hope and ambition that I will have some future involvement with Munster
“Paul has epitomised what it means to wear the red jersey.”
and Irish Rugby.’ It is believed that O’Connell has outlined to IRFU officials his desire to finish his career in France, and three–time European champions Toulon have made his signing a priority. Reacting to the news, Garret Fitzgerald, Munster Rugby CEO, said: “Over a 14–year career with the province, Paul has epitomised what it means to wear the red jersey, and through his own hard work, commitment and leadership he has become an iconic figure in world rugby.”
There are limited spaces remaining for the Cork to Galway Charity Cycle, an event which gives participants the chance cycle with former world number one cyclist Sean Kelly. Now in its 13th year, the event is held to support the
work of Breakthrough Cancer Research, who fund the efficient and effective development of new treatments for poor–prognosis cancers. “I’m delighted to lend my support to this year’s Cork to Galway cycle. There is a fantastic route planned, very
manageable for the leisure cyclist while still presenting a good challenge,” said Seán Kelly. While the cycle kicks off on Friday, June 19th, the deadline for registration is Monday, June 15th. To sign up, see corktogalway.com.
Mintern dominates Cork triathlete Chris Mintern has dominated the opening round of the Triathlon Ireland Super Series, claiming top spot at the Athy leg having led from start to finish. Having established an early lead in the 750 metre swim, Mintern extended his advantage in the cycle, posting the fastest bike split of the day. The Leevale Athletic Club man held his lead over the course of the five kilometre run, finishing in a time of 57.29 to earn what was a hard-fought victory.

Coronation Treat After building up a devoted following in Ireland, The Coronas are stretching their legs with a move to the UK. Play’s Eoghan McNeill talks influences, playlists and break–up albums with guitarist Dave McPhillips.
O
nce considered a band for students due to their relentless gigging on Ireland’s college circuit, The Coronas have now gone international. They’ve relocated to London and signed to the home of Hozier, Island Records, releasing fourth album The Long Way to widespread acclaim. Where once the band’s material detailed boozy J1 holi-
days – “We sleep all day and we drink all night” — set to a Kooks—like acoustic rock soundtrack, their major label debut makes for a more sophisticated affair and signal of the band’s ambitions. With two Live at the Marquee gigs on the horizon this month, guitarist Dave McPhillips says the band’s UK operation is beginning to reap rewards: “We’ve just completed our English tour with a gig in KOKO, which is a real land-
mark of the London indie– rock scene. “We’re seeing the crowds grow, which is great, and we’re playing 400– and 500– people venues. “On a lot of previous tours we were seeing a lot of Irish people. Now more English people are showing up,” he says. McPhillips was recruited to The Coronas having met school friends Danny O’Reilly, Conor Egan and Graham Knox while studying at UCD. After selling out Dublin venue Whelan’s in 2006 with little to no marketing budget or assistance from management teams, The Coronas became regulars in universities and major festivals the length and breadth of the country. McPhillips now says his band’s move across the water has been of both personal and professional benefit: “It takes about six or seven months to get used to, but I really like it. I spent my whole life in Dublin. “We have a lot of friends nearby, too. “It’s great if you can afford London rent,” he says. Living with his bandmates
has resulted in a particularly prolific songwriting stretch, the commune ideal for working on new material: “It’s great to all be living in the same house. We can wake up in the morning and knock into the writing straight away. “It’s good to be working on something all the time, to keep ticking over,” says McPhillips. With frontman O’Reilly recently breaking up with Irish MTV presenter Laura Whitmore, his former long–term girlfriend, The Long Way has been described by both critics and O’Reilly himself as a ‘breakup album.’ McPhillips says that while “Danny obviously wrote the numbers about a breakup,” the band treat songwriting as a collective endeavour: “Danny is the captain. If I have a musical idea, I’ll bring it to Danny and we’ll exchange thoughts and work on that,” he says. Although lead guitarist in one of Ireland’s most ambitious musical exports, McPhillips is self–deprecating about his abilities, saying he had little experience when he first started with the band,
“It’s good to be working on something all the time, to keep ticking over.” “learning as he went”. “It all depends on the song. I don’t have a huge catalogue of riffs, but I can fill in the gaps. “I don’t like to overcomplicate things with a big range of pedals. “I try to play a small number of notes in a not ‘showy–ass way,’ more in a simple, melodic way,” he says, adding that Lindsey Buckingham, David Gilmour, and Jon Squire have remained constant influences throughout his career. McPhillips is bullish about the band’s UK ambitions, and although accepting the
British circuit is “more competitive,” says he’s confident The Coronas will continue to thrive from their new London base: “I definitely think that no matter what type of music you make, if you’re good enough, it’ll happen. “There is less space on UK radio, because stations seem to be only picking two–odd guitar bands for their playlists. “I don’t think it’s a huge concern, though. It’s not like we’re going to change our whole sound and go electro. “Fingers crossed we’ll get recognition,” he says. Of more immediate concern are two Cork gigs on Friday, June 19th and Saturday, June 20th, particularly special for McPhillips, who has family connections Leeside: “I’ve got family in Cork, and used to visit regularly for holidays. It’s easy to say the Marquee is up there with the best, but it really is. It’s amazing,” he says. The Coronas play Live at the Marquee on Friday, June 19th, and Saturday, June 20th. Tickets are priced €35.50 from ticketmaster.ie.
