Scan fears at Cork hospital Errors lead to late cancer diagnosis for Bantry patient By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
A patient’s cancer diagnosis was delayed at Bantry General Hospital by an error in a radiological investigation reported by a temporary consultant radiologist. The entire caseload of the locum, comprising of 4,388 scans and Xrays, has had to be reviewed by the Health Service Executive (HSE) after consultants at the hospital and local GPs raised concerns in relation to the quality of the work being carried out. The locum was employed at Bantry General Hospital between May and September 2013.
Based on the investigation, the HSE recalled 50 patients and offered them priority follow–up appointments. “Most of these patients have not suffered any adverse clinical outcome and did not need further treatment,” said the HSE in a statement. “Regrettably one patient has had a delayed cancer diagnosis.” The patient in question is now under the care of clinicians while the consultant at the centre of this incident is the subject of a Medical Council investigation. The locum also worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and Connolly Hospital in Dublin, which are currently carrying out a pre-
liminary audit to determine possible patient safety concerns. In both instances the time period involved was four weeks in 2013. The locum also worked at Wexford General Hospital and Roscommon Hospitals for short periods of time, however management at both hospitals have confirmed that no patient safety concerns were identified. Thousands more scans and X-rays have also been examined as two other locum consultant radiologists from two separate hospitals were reviewed by the HSE in the past two years. continued on page 2

T
aking a step back and relaxing can sometimes be all that’s needed to clear the head and see things a little more clearly. Modern life being what it is, with all its banging and clattering and stress and running around, it can seem pretty tough to exhale and ‘enhance your calm’, but there are times when there’s literally nothing else for it. Whether it’s a quiet few moments during your lunch break, an hour of blessed silence when you get home from work, the drive back after depositing several rambunctious children at school or even — and this is presuming that all the stars and planets align in your favour and you win the metaphorical, or perhaps even literal, lottery — planning a few days away on your own, far from the madding crowd, we all owe it to ourselves, and to everyone who has to deal with us, to snatch those few fleeting moments of peace, quiet, solitude and whatever else you need, to get rid of some of that stress which has drawn your shoulders up and stabbed tension into the back of your skull. Not that hurly burley is 100% a bad thing, in and of itself. We’ve seen just what happens when there isn’t enough of it around, either, and it’s not a pretty sight. The key is balance, I think. Unfortunately, now that things are starting to get a little busier again, we’ve gone past the point of equilibrium (I think we may have achieved it for about nine minutes some time last September, though I wouldn’t swear to it) and are careening wildly back and forth like some sort of demented pendulum. As I type this, I’m bearing two things in mind: Firstly, Carey’s Lane, where we have our offices, has been vibrating and resonating to the relentless clack of pneumatic drills and hammers for a fortnight now, as well as the whine of saws, the whirr of drills and the occasional sounds of shattering and cheering as yet another bit of the former Mangans and Newport are relegated to the history books. That’s progress for you, but there comes a point where the barrage of low and high frequencies starts to grate a little. Secondly, I got far away from it all last weekend (you can see how far in Going Places) and in between gazing in awe at the our Atlantic shores and spluttering with “argh!” actually in the Atlantic (it’s still pretty chilly at this time of year, in case you’re wondering), I was reminded just how vital a little bit of fresh air and lack of phone reception really is. Somewhere between the dreamy daze of western solitude and the manic mayhem of a standard Cork News Thursday is a LaGrange point where everything is just about right. The “creamy middle” as Homer Simpson might say. We’re heading into the first long weekend of “the Summer” (I’m leaving those quotation marks there because weather wise it’ll probably be a good deal less summery than Spring was) and thousands of us will be on the move. Personally, I’m heading to west Cork to catch up — and possibly fall down — with some old friends. Others will stay at home and shut their doors against the chaos of the city, will host or attend parties, will take their families to the beach or the forest or the hills, or will bam out on the couch in their underwear, eating bowls of cereal and stabbing at PlayStation controls, and it’s all good: whatever you’re having yourself. Just don’t forget that next Tuesday will be around sooner than you expect, and whatever your plans, be sure to make the most of them. Drive safe, smile a lot, sing if you’re the victim of a noble call, be good and be happy. You’ve earned it.

Oncology nurses at Cork University Hospital have served notice of industrial action to hospital management on foot of claims that the hospital’s oncology unit is “seriously” understaffed. The unit is operating at the same staffing levels as when the ward first opened nine years ago, according to Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), despite a rise in cancer diagnoses in the Cork region. The nurses have also said staffing levels are insufficient for more intensive treatment regimes, which require more manpower, that are now being implemented on the ward. Strike action will begin on Tuesday, May 12th with INMO members engaging in work to rule and refusing to carry out any non–nursing duties. “We feel that management are overwhelmed at the staff shortage in the unit. They don’t share our sense of urgency to remedy the situation,” Patsy Doyle of the INMO told The Cork News. “(They) are simply drifting,” she said. Ms Doyle said concerns were raised with CUH management last November, and the hospi-
tal has failed since then to address the issues which the nurses brought to their attention. She also said the oncology unit is typically left three to four nurses short per week, and that the hospital has repeatedly failed to ring–fence beds for oncology patients. “Oncology, by its very nature, is an emotionally–charged environment. Patients often stay long–term, and some will pass away in our care. We’re trying to do our best to help our patients on their final journey, but staffing levels are making it increasingly difficult. “Our nurses have what I would call ‘compassion fatigue’,” she continued. Patsy Doyle called for a major review into the advancements in clinical treatment regimes since the ward first opened, and adequate support for nurses dealing with traumatic cases. While direct patient care will not be compromised by the action, the INMO has appealed to the HSE to engage with them before it commences. Ms Doyle said she expects the work to rule, with a mandate of 93 percent support of INMO members, to continue for a week before they review their next course of action. Cork University Hospital did not respond to requests for an official comment.

Fine Gael Cork North Central Senator and the Party’s Seanad Spokesperson on Health Colm Burke told The Cork News that the incident regarding locums highlights the growing concern of vacant consultant posts. Figures released to Senator Burke at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children in February revealed that there were five consultancy posts in Bantry
General Hospital last December, two of which were filled by temporary staff while one was vacant. In Cork University Hospital, out of 197 consultancy posts, 12 were temporary and 14 vacant at the time; while at the Mercy University Hospital, out of 45 posts, one was vacant. Senator Burke highlighted a February agreement on new salary scales for new entrant consultants, which was accepted by Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) members, and had been intended to fill vacancies. However, this week the IMO called on health service management to “bring to an end the inordinate delays” in implementing that agreement.
“We now have stand–off between the HSE and the IMO whereby there’s different interpretations given to the agreement,” said Senator Burke. “As a result we have a high number of consultant positions which are vacant, and when consultant positions are vacant, we then have to employ locums. “When you have locums in — and in fairness most locums are of the highest possible calibre — you still will run into problems.” Fianna Fáil Health spokesperson Billy Kelleher highlighted his concern that the initial reports and the numbers of patients needing to be recalled “may just be the tip of the iceberg”. “The major gaps in perma-
nent consultants in our hospitals and the chaos around consultant recruitment are at least in part to blame for this,” he said. “The idea that you can run a health service with temporary posts at the highest level of diagnostics is ludicrous. The chaotic nature of locum cover and the lack of consistency in expert care is putting patient safety at risk.” Bantry councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy said the news is “very worrying” for his constituents. “Generally speaking, it’s people from west Cork who attend Bantry Hospital and it’s an elderly population around here. It’s very regrettable that something like this could happen,” he told The Cork News.

Apple faces crunch Apple, the world’s second largest company, faces a potential ‘back tax’ bill of billions of dollars in relation to its Cork–based Irish arm. However, there are no fears that the European Commission’s ongoing investigation into tax deals in Ireland will affect Apple’s Leeside operations, according to a UCC– based economist. The investigation is considering whether Ireland improperly gave Apple state aid, and the US company this week announced that: “If the European Commission were to conclude against Ireland, the European Commission could require Ireland to recover from the company past taxes covering a period of up to 10 years reflective of the disallowed state aid.” The technology firm’s Cork office, which was established in 1980, employs 4,000 people, the majority of whom

If they do make a judgment against Ireland, the Minister for Finance has already indicated that it will be appealed to the European Court of Justice, a process that could take up to three years,” Seamus Coffey, UCC, told The Cork News. Mr Coffey said that any judgment against Ireland is unlikely to affect the day–to– day operations of Irish–based foreign technology companies: “Apple’s share price is higher than it was last week so it doesn’t seem that investors are too concerned that Ireland is going to take a big chunk of Apple’s profits. “This isn’t about changing Ireland’s tax laws,” he said, adding that “Apple can adapt and change their tax structure without changing their presence on the ground in Cork.”

Cork is rallying to support survivors of Nepal’s deadly earthquake, described by a renowned local adventurer as a “heart-wrenching” disaster. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake has killed over 5,500 people, and has driven tens of thousands of people into open spaces and temporary camps in the Kathmandu valley. Cork mountaineer Pat Falvey, who has led expeditions to many parts of the world, told The Cork News about 38 close friends of his who are based in Nepal. Five are still missing. Trips he organises to Nepal have been cancelled until October and all efforts are being concentrated on helping those in need there instead. He added that his company, Pat Falvey Irish & Worldwide Adventures, is also supporting the Nepal Ireland Society, which has organised a central fund to bring relief to crisis–stricken areas. “I have been to Nepal 43 times, and have spent an average of one or three months there every year as part of my spiritual
home, so to see the likes of the Hindu and Buddhist temples destroyed; and schools, hospitals and family homes, along with the tragic deaths, is heartwrenching. Nepal is also coming into the monsoon season, so it’s a fearful time,” said Mr Falvey. Clonakilty native Declan Murphy, founder of the Nepalese Street children’s charity Just-One, said his friends based in Nepal are “traumatised by things they have seen”. This is his first April away from the country since 1999. He is back in Ireland due to family matters, but said part of him wishes he was in Nepal. The children supported by Just–One and their team have all survived.
Two fundraisers are to take place this weekend to go to Just-One children and their families affected by the earthquake. Clonakilty Lions Club have organised a coffee morning today, Friday from 10am to 12.30pm, while a separate coffee day and cake sale will be held at the Parish Centre in Clonakilty from 9am to 1pm on Sunday, May 3rd. “One of the big worries over the coming weeks is access to clean, safe water and access to food. The tangible benefits of Ireland’s economic recovery will not be felt in Cork until the “still stagnant” domestic economy picks up, according to a Cork economist. Reacting to the government’s spring statement, Dr Robbie Butler said that Cork’s retail sector needs to gather momentum for the recovery to be felt on the ground: “It’s very hard to see the positive effects, as our recovery has been driven by our export economy. “Ireland’s domestic economy is still stagnant, and real positives won’t be felt until

the city’s high street and bar trades begin to improve, for example” he told The Cork News. Dr Butler, of UCC’s Department of Economics, said that harsh austerity measures have been successful in reducing Ireland’s budget deficit: “When this government came to power, public finances were way out of kilter. The Fine Gael and Labour government inherited a huge budget deficit. While we can never know whether cuts were carried out with the least amount of pain possible, austerity measures

A giant step for Alicja Ballintemple girl defies the odds to start walking By Nick Bramhill THE parents of a Cork girl who is battling multiple disorders have described their brave daughter’s sixth birthday earlier this week as the happiest to date, after she defied the odds and learned how to walk. Alicja Nowicki was born with a badly deformed right leg, which medical experts in Ireland and Europe repeatedly advised should be amputated. The youngster, the only child of parents Ania and Radek, is almost blind, partially deaf, cannot swallow and has heart problems. Doctors had said the removal of her damaged leg — which had no tibia, no ankle joint and just half a knee joint,
as well as a club foot — would represent her only chance of walking in later years with a prosthetic limb in its place. But surgeons at St. Mary’s Medical Centre in Florida successfully reconstructed the youngster’s leg in three highly–complex operations that spanned eight months. In recent months Alicja, after undergoing intensive physiotherapy, has literally taken a huge step her Polish–born parents once never expected to witness by learning to walk. Her mother Ania, who lives in Ballintemple, said: “This was Alicja’s happiest birthday. It’s given us such joy to see her being able to walk and has given her so much happiness and confidence. “She needs support when she walks because she has problems balancing. Her

right leg is shorter than her left leg, so she needs to wear a shoe lift and she may need up to three more operations to lengthen her right leg in the future, because it’s growing more slowly. “But it’s made such a huge difference to her. She’s almost blind and before the surgery, she could crawl but didn’t
want to. Now she wants to walk all the time.” In 2012 Alicja, who was deaf from birth, made medical history when she became the first child from this country to be fitted with a bionic ear in a complex operation in Italy. Her parents’ next goal is to tackle their daughter’s inability to swallow.
“It’s given us such joy.” Ania explained: “Alicja has been tube-fed all her life and she still has problems swallowing. I think she’s afraid of

Cork in European green list top ten Cork City has been placed in the top ten environmentally friendly cities in Europe, outranking Porto, Istanbul and Cascais to make it to seventh in the European Green Capital for 2017 standings. This was Cork’s first year applying to the awards, and Cork City Council engineer Michael O’Brien praised the cohesive effort from a number of Cork organisations: “Cork City Council are very grateful for the important support it’s received from a range of stakeholders in mak-
ing this application, in particular Cork County Council, Gas Networks Ireland, ESB Networks and Energy Cork.” University College Cork, CIT, Cork Airport, Port of Cork and the Cork Chamber also supported the application, and there are hopes that the city can achieve higher rankings in the years to come: “This was the first year that we have prepared a submission and we have learned a lot from the experience,” said Mr O’Brien.
No go on motorway There are fears that the continuing failure to progress the Cork to Limerick motorway to the planning stage will hamper anticipated growth in the agriculture, food, and dairy sector in the region. “These sectors will experience growth in the coming years. They are transport– heavy industries that will result in increased traffic between the two cities. “The current road structure is simply not equipped to serve this growth. The concern is that the planning process for the M20 motor-
way hasn’t yet begun,” Conor Healy, Cork Chamber, told The Cork News. Mr Healy, while criticising Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe for refusing to allow the motorway to progress to planning, accepted the project is “significant from a cost point of view”: “It’s important however that the process begins, which will allow the project to be completed in a reasonable timeframe,” he said. Meanwhile, Dr Orlaith Borthwick, economist with the Limerick Chamber,

300,000 charity meals served in seven months It has emerged that a food bank has served 300,000 meals to Cork people in need since the start of last September. The figure equates to 1,260 meals a day, and has been cited as evidence by a Cork City councillor that Ireland’s economic recovery has been solely “for the rich”. The Bia Food Initiative is a Cork–based government– funded charity that redistributes surplus food from a number of sources including Tesco, Aldi and Lidl. The charity supplies this food to organisations such as St Vincent de Paul, who in turn supply food parcels to those in need. According to Karen Horgan, a project manager with Bia Food Initiative, those availing of the service include people in employment who are struggling to survive from paycheque to paycheque: “What we’re hearing from our partners is that the people coming into them are previ-

Hook uncorked 'Desperation and ignorance,' says George Hook about some of the tactics on the 'No' side of the equality referendum ... george@thecorknews.ie
H
ere is an extract from a piece I wrote for The Cork News three years ago, in July 2012. “For me, marriage is a commitment between two people. It is a promise that they will look after, protect and love one another for the rest of their lives. It has nothing to do with religion, race, belief or sexuality. Marriage is a public declaration of love. It is a celebration of beauty, devotion and companionship and it should be available to everyone who chooses to celebrate its sanctity. The world changes so quickly. We all grow and develop with those changes because it makes for a better and more understanding place in which to live. There was a time when scientists thought the world was flat. Not so long ago, some women were accused of practising witchcraft and were burned at the stake. In the middle of the last century, children were still being beaten in Irish schools for writing with their left hand. All the while, homosexuals and lesbians repressed their natural feelings and desires for fear of being misunderstood and shunned by their community. Gay people do not choose to be gay. They do not decide all of a sudden to wake up one morning and lust after members of the same sex. It is as natural a feeling for them as an attraction to the opposite sex is for straight people. Why then, should they be punished for living a life that makes them happy and content? Surely society in Ireland has progressed and matured enough to understand that equality means equal treatment for all types and not just conforming to the majority. How boring and backward would life be without different values to embrace? The world is big enough to

cope with everything the human race has to offer it. Nature does not discriminate on life and neither should we. Ireland has a duty to protect all of its citizens — gay and straight — and marriage must be a fundamental human right for everyone.” The most effective method of avoiding a tough question is to give an answer that is factual but wholly and entirely unrelated to the original query. Politicians claim to be seasoned experts in this field, but as is usually the case when a hand is overplayed, their rhetoric soon becomes jaded and obvious. The trick these days is to be as subtle as possible in skewing an issue to suit one’s own means. A point–blank U-turn on a question is easily spotted, but

a delicate side–step to swerve a dipping curve–ball is more difficult to pick up on. Politics for Dummies: Never tackle an issue head-on. Fudge it with distraction and then slowly back away. The ‘No’ campaigners in the gay marriage referendum need to brush up on their deception skills. Unrepentant in their quest to keep Irish society in the Stone Age, they have set their campaign trail on a course of public confusion and misinformation. Students the world over know that the first rule in addressing any exam is to answer the question in front of them. Yet where this referendum is concerned, the ‘No’ side insists on addressing issues that have nothing to do with the question being
asked. This referendum is not about children’s rights. Or parents’ rights. It is about the right of two consenting adults to get married. That the ‘No’ side has seen fit to drag children into the equation is an act of desperation and, frankly, ignorance. And it shows that they are all too aware of the impending result on May 22nd. Democracy allows for the expression of both sides of the argument and the ‘No’ campaign are entitled to their views just as much as the ‘Yes’ side. But when scaremongering supersedes common sense and issues are skewed to suit an argument, it has no place in a fair debate. Ireland is on the verge of taking a major step towards

real and tangible equality for all. As things stand, we cannot truly say we are a fair and open society when so many of our fellow country men and women feel like second class citizens. If the latter phrase seems obtuse or exaggerated to any of you reading, Una Mullally’s powerful piece in The Irish Times this week will set you straight on the realities of life in Ireland as a gay couple. The right of marriage should not be reserved for heterosexual couples adhering to religious restrictions. The definition of marriage as we all know it today has changed radically over the last 50 years anyway, and this referendum merely offers Ireland the opportunity to catch up with the everyday realities

Certainly, two consenting adults should not be at the mercy of a religious pardon or institutional approval in order to be united as a couple under law. By rowing in behind the ‘No’ side, we are saying that one group of society is unequal. That, because of the way a person is born, they should be precluded from being afforded the same rights as those who happen to have been born in the majority. Does that tally with your notion of equality? May 22nd is a hugely important date for the respectability of this country in protecting the rights of all of its citizens. I trust we will do the right thing.

No panic? Alarm worry in north Cork Proposed changes to a panic alarm scheme for the elderly have been condemned as a cost–cutting measure amidst fears that prices will be increased for those who avail of the scheme in Cork. The Senior Alert Scheme provides government funding to community groups to purchase panic alarms for the elderly and vulnerable. It has been decided to move responsibility of the scheme from the Department of the Environment to Pobal, a company that manages funding programmes for the Irish government and the EU. The change, due to be implemented this summer, means that community workers will no longer have a say in the procurement of the alarms, with Pobal tendering contracts for them to private operators. “It’s taking the onus out of the hands of voluntary workers and putting it into the hands of private contractors. “It doesn’t seem like anybody is winning from the change. It’s

A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment insisted however that “decreasing the level of ad-
ministration for community groups will allow them to spend more time on the key aim of the scheme, which is enhanced interaction with older persons in our communities.“ The spokesperson further claimed that finding for the scheme will remain the same, and that “increased and open competition should bring prices down” for the elderly.

The Carrigaline post office has relocated to a new, 1,000 square foot modern purpose– built unit in the Carrigaline Shopping Centre, following significant investment in the outlet. Now 100 percent wheelchair accesible, the post office will
provide over 200 services, including passport applications, international money transfers, and facilities for the payment of 160 different bills. It is hoped that the new post office — run by Barry Collins and family — will deliver a positive, sustainable economic impact to both the shopping centre and Carrigaline town.

When Tyndall was established in 1982, salaries were set on an ad–hoc basis, and allowed to remain at these levels until the present day,” Mr Mulachy told The Cork News. A 2014 PriceWaterhouseCoopers report advised that two–thirds of Tyndall’s staff should receive a pay increase averaging €9,034, with the remaining third currently earning more than the equivalent UCC salary by an
average of €10,000 per annum. According to Mr Mulcahy, the union has moved to strike due to the report’s methodology and the refusal of UCC authorities to allow for an appeals process regarding the its findings. A UCC statement however disputed the legitimacy of the union’s industrial action, saying “the university cannot accept that there is any reasonable justification for this industrial action, most particularly during the examination season.”

Major crackdown from Gardaí Mobile phone use while driving, along with drivers who speed, drink or drug drive or do not wear a seatbelt, will be specifically targeted by gardaí over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. To support An Garda Síochána’s enforcement message, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has developed a 30–second radio advert to remind drivers that if detected using a mobile phone, they risk getting three penalty points on their licence.

from “careless and dangerous drivers”. “We know that the vast majority of people are law abiding and we want to thank them for their good road behaviour, it’s saving lives. But for those who continue to ignore the safety appeals, I’m afraid we will have no alternative but to sanction
those drivers because they put lives at risk,” he stated. Focus will also be on motorcycle safety over the weekend, with drivers urged to watch out for motorcyclists using the road. Since January, five motorcyclists have died in crashes compared to two up to the same period last year.
Driving while using a mobile phone has been shown conclusively to have a major impairing effect on attention to the road and reaction time. As the May Bank Holiday is one of the busiest times of the year on Irish roads, the risks are exacerbated.
Cork’s outdoor enthusiasts are being urged to protect themselves against Lyme disease, which can result in severe debilitating heart and nervous system damage. The HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre specialist in public health medicine Dr Paul McKeown stated that ramblers, campers, mountain bikers, and others who work in forested or grassy areas or visit them for recreation must be vigilant against
tick bites. “If you find a tick, remove it — consult your GP if symptoms develop,” he said. “Only a minority of ticks carry infection. Ticks generally have to be attached to a person for a number of hours before passing on the infection, so rapid removal of ticks is important. If a tick is removed within a few hours, the risk of infection is low.” To remove a tick, grasp it with tweezers as close to your skin as you can and pull gently.

I
f I have a shoot, I’ll be up early; about 7am or 7.30am. I wake up in a positive mindset. I just think: ‘Jesus, it’s a lovely day to be healthy and alive.’ I’ll start off my morning with four egg whites, a protein shake and a piece of fruit. I’ll shower and do my hair. I don’t really allow anyone else to touch my hair but me, so I’ll do my hair myself before work. I’ll pack fruit, water and then travel to meet clients. Photo shoots can be tiring because you’re standing there and you’re holding the same pose in the one spot. You mightn’t know it, but you have to perfect poses. You can’t just stand in front of the camera. You need to get the right look going for the outfit that you’re wearing. It’s tough. To be honest, I do enjoy the extra bit of attention. Anyone would. I don’t think anyone doesn’t like attention. I wouldn’t be blowing my horn about it, though. There’s confidence, and then there’s cockiness. I haven’t changed. I haven’t gotten one bit cocky, and I’m still the same person. I’ve came across people who are so stuck up, and seem to think that because they’re models, they’re ‘so much better than everyone.’ That’s not it at all. I believe in being humble and gracious. You have to be. Under the terms of my modeling contract with Assets, I can’t change anything about my body without informing the agency. I have to keep my body in proportion. At the moment, I’m slowly pushing towards putting on a small bit more weight in the gym. I have a really lean physique, but I would like to add a tiny bit of size to it. Not body building size — more like an Abercrombie & Fitch kind of size. For that, you need get your protein and carbs in, so when we break for lunch on a shoot, I usually go for

pasta and chicken with some kind of sauce. My diet would be important to me, and not just because I’m a model. It should be important to all of us to be healthy. I’ve been playing hurling for Blackrock since I was ten, and have won a lot of county medals with the team. I play corner–forward, but when the ball’s not coming into the corner, I might be pushed out to wing–forward. I love the skill of the game. I love how fast the game is played. I have great admiration for Dónal
Óg and Conor Cusack for coming out in the GAA. It really helped me as young hurler. They’re men’s men. People seem to think you need to be really camp to be gay. You don’t. You can still be a very sporty, man’s man. I’ve always loved sport: boxing, hurling, and I used to play soccer. I have to work sport around the modeling work now, though. Some weeks I’ll have two or three shoot bookings; others I’ll have one. It depends on what’s out there, and a lot of the time you can
be booked at the last minute, so you have to be available. After a shoot, I head home for a shower. You’re sweating a bit, and you want to get your makeup off. My dinner would more than likely be green veg with some kind of meat. I need to change it up so I don’t get sick of what I’m eating. If I don’t have a shoot or show the next day, I like going out with the lads, or maybe going out with the girls for food. My favourite places to go out in Cork City are Havana’s or Rearden’s, and I do like the
odd time popping into Chambers. They’re just filled with nice, good-humoured people. I haven’t had a bad experience in those clubs. I would like a few drinks when I’m out. I’d be a very social person. Grey Goose is, like, my middle name. I’m a lads’ lad. I hang around with a group of lads who are sporty and go out and pull good– looking girls and stuff like that. People wouldn’t expect someone like me to be gay, which is very annoying. I still get: ‘Are you sure you’re gay? I

don’t think you’re gay. You’re very masculine, and you haven’t changed.’ You don’t have to change to be gay. You don’t have to be ‘a, b or c’ to be gay. Everyone is different in their own way. Just because I play sport and I’m a bit of a lad doesn’t mean I’m not gay. It really does annoy me. I always stay positive, though. Before going to bed, I’ll think over how my day went and look at the positives and the negatives: see what I can do to improve my daily routine. I realise that I’m very lucky.

Opera defender celebrated The man credited with keeping Cork Opera House in the hands of the people of Cork has been commemorated with an art collection in the venue named in his honour. The late Charlie Hennessy, who was former chairman of the Board of Directors, and a lifetime patron and supporter of the arts in Cork, has been honoured through the Charlie Hennessy Art Collection, which fea-
tures work by some of Ireland’s most celebrated national artists as well as work by emerging local artists. The bulk of this collection was curated by Mr Hennessy while chair of Cork Opera House, and most recently includes a new commission by Debbie Godsell’s Second Circle marking the Opera House’s 160th year, along a portrait of Mr Hennessy by his friend John Cunningham.
Miki Barlok has been photographing theatre for years and his attention was always drawn backstage, where all the magic happens. He dedicated a large portion of last year to capturing the essence of life behind the scenes at Cork Opera House with a specific vision of giving credit to all the hard work happening backstage. A sense of community Deal with it Fernhill House Hotel & Gardens in Clonakilty has seen their way through nine other finalists to win the coveted title of Ireland’s Most Community Minded SME at the Blacknight SME Awards in east Cork. The SME awards were held at the Radisson Blu hotel in Little Island to celebrate Ireland’s almost 200,000 small and medium sized businesses. Fernhill were also finalists in the ‘environmentally minded business’ category as well as being shortlisted as one of the best food and drink SMEs in Ireland. Fernhill is well known for its contribution to the community. They annually host and help to organise a pink ribbon walk which has raised a significant amount of awareness for breast cancer and over €50,000, and last year they sponsored over 50 local groups and events in west

Cork. Its properieters, the O’Neill family, are also involved in Sustainable Clonakilty, Tourism West Cork, Clonakilty Chamber of Commerce and the new rural bike scheme among others. The hotel carries out a range of environmentally friendly
initiatives, including making use of solar panels, sourcing their own water supply and planting over 600 trees this year alone. Over 100 local people are employed at Fernhill House & Gardens, along with sourcing local products.
Let’s Get Started Cork is among five cities which have been chosen to host the Startup Gathering 2015. Our Gathering is expected to draw significant numbers to the city when the Region Open Day takes place at the beginning of October. he Good Fish Company is a family business based in Carrigaline, specialising in supplying fresh fish from around the coast of County Cork, for instance Castletownbere, Kinsale, Union Hall and Crosshaven. At their base in Carrigaline, Denis Good and
his family have their own artisan smoke–house as well as a kitchen where award–winning fish dishes are prepared by hand every day, such as this delicious topped cod! Ingredients • 4 x 150g cod or haddock fillets • 1tbsp olive oil • 1 large yellow pepper

• 1 clove garlic • 4 peeled plum tomatoes • 1tbsp (20g) red pesto • 8 stoned black olives, sliced • A pinch of saffron strands, optional • 1tsp smoked paprika • A handful of parsley leaves, chopped • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste
Method: 1. Preheat oven to 190ºC and dry the cod on kitchen paper. Brush a non–stick baking tray with a little of the oil and sit the fish fillets on the brushed area. 2. In a small non–stick frying pan, fry the de–seeded and chopped yellow pepper over medium heat for 10
minutes until softened and slightly tinged gold, then add the peeled, chopped garlic and stir for a minute. Add the tomatoes (no juice), pesto, saffron and paprika and stir for two minutes, then stir in the olive slices and chopped parsley, plus seasoning to taste. Cook for a further
minute then spoon the mixture onto the tops of the fish fillets. Bake for 12 minutes or until fish is just cooked through and topping is bubbling. 3. Try serving each portion with, straight–cut oven chips and steamed greens, or a sessional summer salad.

Baby survey yields surprising results Pressure to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ is everywhere, but a new survey has shown for the first time just how damaging that urge can be. Nearly a third of parents here say they feel under real pressure to outdo other mammies and daddies. Striving to overachieve in the “keeping up” stakes can do more harm than good, as the motivation can shift from trying to show your child how much you love them towards neglicting them in the race to show off or to compete.
More than nine out of ten mothers and fathers said that becoming a parent turned out to be even better than they imagined, with 93% saying that having a child had brought them “a new kind of happiness” and 91% saying they feel that their lives are more fulfilled. Only half admitted to feeling overwhelmed from time to time, though mothers seem to feel pressure more than fathers by a margin of about three to two. Just over half of the parents surveyed
said they stress themselves out on a regular basis by worrying that their child isn’t hitting traditional baby milestones on schedule. Parenting consultant Kate Barlow says this is “a very common problem; the fear that baby ‘should’ be sitting, rolling over, crawling and walking by a certain time’,” and reassured parents that if something was actually wrong “you and your support team – your family, friends, GP or health visitor – would pick up on it very quickly.”
Get on air Path of least resistance? Teenagers who have an interest in media and broadcasting can get some real–world experience behind the microphone and the mixing desk this summer at the Cork Campus Radio studios in UCC. The CCR Radio Camp, now in its fifth year, is a week–long introduction to presentation, broadcasting and production which can open up a world of opportunity in radio and televison journalism, as well music and even print. The camp runs through June and July from Monday to Friday, 12pm to 5pm and is aimed at 14 – 17 year olds who will learn how to present a radio show individually and as part of a team, learn about production skills and interviewing skills, learn how to record and edit sound, how to do research and how to put a podcast together. forest, you can create new pathways in your brain to break old habits, to think, act and feel differently. The key is to repeat them so that in time you take new paths automatically without having to think about them. Stride with Pride winners Scoil Barra Naofa from Monkstown in Cork has been awarded the title of Ireland’s Park ‘n’ Stride School of the Year. An Taisce Green Schools presented the school with their award at the event honouring the winners of this year’s Green Schools BIG Travel Challenge 2015. “What change can you achieve in three weeks?” was the question asked of over 1500 schools as part of the BIG Travel Challenge. Schools were asked to concentrate on one sustainable transport mode for the month to see if they could achieve real, lasting change in the travel behaviour of their staff and students. oulouse – also known as ‘La Ville Rose’ (the pink city) – is a very affordable city which takes its name from the dusty pink bricks of the medieval Vieux Quartier. It has a rich cultural lifestyle which boasts a strong Latin vibe through its medieval streets, with a unique Spanish influence evident in the Old Town. That being said, this south– western gem is still unmistakably French, with excel-

Summers in Toulouse are filled with affordable events for all ages such as the Toulouse d’Ete jazz festival which runs from July to August. A must–visit for kids is the Cite de Escape, which is home to an Imax planetarium and stellarium as well as the Mir Space Station and Soyuz spacecraft. It only takes 15 minutes to drive here from Toulouse city centre and its well worth the effort. The most striking feature of the city is its architecture, with its bricks and roof tiles unique to the region. The Basilica of St Serni, the biggest Romanesque church in the western world, is an architectural masterpiece. On Sundays, a lively flea market kicks off where you will find some vintage fur-
niture and knick–knacks for sale. Framed by gracious pink–bricked buildings, the Capitole Town Hall is an impressive structure with eight imposing pink marble columns, a concrete reflection of the city’s cultural identity. Toulouse is a walkable city; small, compact and easy to
get around. it was also of the first cities to adopt the city bike scheme, and is a model for Cork’s scheme: Velo Toulouse operates very efficiently throughout the city and is well worth trying out to get a real feel for the local experience. Free electric shuttle buses drift around the town
and can be flagged down whenever you locate them. When it comes to places to eat, this city boasts several Michelin star restaurants and, while you will see plenty of Spanish tapas bars, the traditional gourmet specialities are very French. I’d never been to Mayo before, in spite of years of listening to people tell me how brilliant and wonderful it is, and now I’m sorry I waited so long because nobody did it justice. From the beautifully desolate high roads to the towering, monolithic mountains and the long incursions of the Atlantic between fingers and spits of limestone countryside, this is almost a land apart. It’s stunning. There’s nowhere better to base yourself for a foray into
the Yew County than Westport, clung to Clew Bay and its (if the stories are to be believed) 365 islands, Clare among them looming like a massive boulder guarding the horizon. If you really want to get up close and personal with the Atlantic, then head to Clew Bay Bike Hire and book yourself some kayak time. If you’re a novice be prepared for a dunking, though. Paddy the instructor spent about as much time fishing me out of the water
as he did expounding on the history, geography, geology, hydrology and palaeontology of this coastal wonderland. Then, thankfully, he kept me warm and alive with coffee and a scone. A
few weeks back on these pages I said that I was probably too old to drive a five–door Mini. Well I’m definitely too old for a Disco, but not for this Disco or — to give the car its proper title — the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Discovery Sport is
a replacement for Land Rover’s Freelander, and the five–seater version I drove is a very neat and impressive motor. It’s also available as a seven seater. The Disco Sport looks very like the Range Rover Evoque and it’s going to be a difficult call for Land Rover fans whether to opt for the stylish Evoque in the Range
Rover brand or the equally stylish Discovery Sport. Land Rover has many famous fans. The British Royal family are big supporters of the brand and the Middletons are also regularly seen driving one. The car definitely has a British feel to it, and the logo on the dash for mobile phone connectivity had a picture of a
red British Telecom phone box. My test car was a 2.2–litre diesel nine–speed automatic and it just seemed to glide along. It really is powerful and has a towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes. Many new cars now have electric handbrakes, where you are never 100% sure that the handbrake has engaged as you exit the car, but not with the Disco, where you have the most gorgeous gear selector you will ever see. Once you stop the car it automatically switches to ‘P’ for park. When you switch off the engine the gear selector disappears into the floor, but you will leave
the car confident that the handbrake is on. We had some beautiful weather the week I had the car and it was a pleasure to cruise on motorways and by– roads. You will definitely feel like the ‘king of the road’ from your high driving position. At traffic lights I began to look down on other motorists and see what they were doing. Many looked back up, probably in envy. Inside I really liked the decor, which was very stylish and most importantly brightly coloured. There was ample leg room for front and back seat passengers in the five–seated version I drove. A ‘mini’ spare

Self–driving cars could reduce congestion by 90%

I
’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the Opel Insignia is still a damn fine looking car. Particularly this one, gleaming in the (suddenly chilly) sunshine at Kevin O’Leary Opel at Silversprings. It’s a dazzling white SRi LE, fully kitted out, extra sporty, and reassuringly luxurious. I mentally tick off details as I sit in. “Leather seats…check. Six–speed gearbox…check. Classy perforated aluminium pedals…check. Tinted windows…check. Massive centre console that looks a bit like Walter the Wobot from Judge Dredd…check.” Looking good. Off we go. This amped–up edition of the Insignia boasts a 2.0 CDTI engine, which gives it a bite to match the bark of its interior. No need for the air conditioning today, as it’s Baltic, so I tweak the temperature up just a little and wait patiently for my turn to take a place on the road
before making the odd, in retrospect, decision to turn up towards Silver Springs and Mayfield in rush hour traffic. The first twenty minutes of this test drive become a test sit, but that gives me plenty of time to mess about with the Bluetooth and get the car all buddy buddy with my phone. Eventually I get a chance to point the 18–inch alloys towards Glanmire and finally off I go…straight into more traffic. It’s still ok, though. Those extending leather seats are very comfy, and I get to have a little fun with the lumbar support and the SatNav. Not taking any more risks once I finally start moving again I make a few deft turns to end up on a very narrow, very twisty country road somewhere on the far side of Riverstown, and everything suddenly becomes a lot more fun. In contrast to the last hour or so, there isn’t a soul to be seen. The car’s barely a year old,

with only 8115km on the clock and, thanks to that CDTI being as efficient as it is, has had to be covered with a mere €180 in road tax. Eventually the M8 appears before me and I power my way down the on–ramp, hitting 120KPH in what feels like pretty much no time flat. Without a close eye on the speedo I would have had no idea: it’s no effort at all to the Insignia and it’s as smooth and quiet as a marble desktop. I finally get to use that sixth gear, which makes it feel as if I’m driving at a stately pace down a well–maintained driveway. If you have a lot of miles to cover (unlike the previous owner) but still enjoy the occasional short burst of energy, this is a car you’d seriously want to check out. Practically brand new though it is, it’s more than €5,000 cheaper than list price, at €28,900. Big shiny lots–of–fun–to–drive bargain? Check.
If you’re one of the many thousands of people who’s had it up “to just about here” with Cork’s rush–hour traffic, the future might be bright thanks to a study which has shown how up to 90% of traffic could be eliminated with fast–develop-
ing self–drive technology. Data gleaned from car journeys in Lisbon have shown how a fleet of self-driving, shared “TaxiBots” would change traffic management completely. In the Lisbon model, au-
tonomous cars would roam throughout cities, coordinating with one another to keep lanes as open as possible. The model is so successful that even public transport options like buses would become less necessary.
The miracle of water into diesel Audi has successfully made diesel fuel using nothing but water, air and renewable electricity. The process, which releases oxygen as an industrial by–product, results in a new fuel called “blue crude” which can be processed to make an e–diesel which is not only more environmentally friendly than ‘real’ diesel (it’s hydrogen–based and sulfur free) but also burns much more efficiently, at 70% compared to about 55%. The Germans can only
make a few dozen litres of blue crude a day currently, but they’re already pushing
to ramp up production and commercialise it within a few years.

“Your voice is like silver…” Lorcan MacMuiris chats with Camilla Staveley–Taylor of The Staves about family, friendship, close harmonies and closer sisterhood ahead of their upcoming performance in Cork…
T
he Staveley–Taylor sisters are prodigiously gifted singers and songwriters, and it’s not surprising: they’ve been practicing for a long time. Their light, clear voices belie their relatively tender years, especially when married with lyrics which are by turns plaintive, insightful, playful and profound, but their real power is in the union of three perfectly interlocking voices, and harmonies borne of years of second–nature sisterly singing. As The Staves, they’ve worked their way from a home in Watford to world tours and critical adoration and are now five albums (and sundry EPs) into their career. “It was a very musical household,” Camilla, the youngest of the three, tells me. “Our parents aren’t musicians but they loved music and had really good taste. They could naturally harmonise too, and we always used to sing in the car. I can’t remember a time when we didn’t harmonise together. We change it up quite a lot now but it always used to go in order of age: Emily has the lowest range, Jess is in the middle, and I was always the higher.” I ask if that’s become a comfortable trap, and whether it takes effort now to not rely on those same old familial habits, and she giggles. “The road has fettered my voice,” she claims, sounding as light and lyrical as anyone I’ve ever spoken with. “All the nights out, all the drinking, you know how it goes! But we are a bit more ambitious with our vocal arrangements
now, I think. Definitely. Normally, when one of us has written a song or written part of it, we’ll all start singing along and will naturally fall into some kind of basic harmonies, but then we pick out certain sections and see which ones we want to build on. It’s tempting to just sing block harmonies, but a lot of it is knowing what to leave out; otherwise we’d indulge ourselves and harmonise all the way through!” The three girls are, as Camilla puts it, “best friends”, and always have been. “As cheesy as that might sound,” she protests. “We are very alike in lots if ways. It’s kind of inescapable that we are, but definitely in the last few years we’ve come to realise more and more that we are different people and we have to allow ourselves to be. It’s not like it’s hard work: even before we were gigging we always spent most of our time together. We do bicker and argue, of course, but there’s an honesty that you get from working with your family. I feel very lucky for that.” I know better than to ask the source of bickerings between sisters, but I do prod a little to try to find out whether their family roles (Emily is the eldest, Jess is in the middle and Camilla is the youngest) are reflected in how they comport themselves or arrange their songs. I can sense Camilla’s diplomatic grin from the other end of the phone line but also, plain as day, how much she adores her big sisters. “There are the clichés,” she allows, “you know what different siblings are supposed to be like. There’s

Emily used to be much more the sort of ‘mother hen’ type character…but we swap on a regular basis, depending on what kind of mood we’re in or whether one of us is having a hard time and needs support.” They’ve turned out some truly beautiful songs between them, so that support seems to be paying off. Tributes abound to their keen sense of melody as well as their astonishing harmonic virtuosity, as well as their lyrical sensitivities. Camilla says they don’t have ‘a process’. Their approach to songwriting changes depending on who’s doing what, and when. While she says that she’s perhaps a little more lyrically oriented than, say, middle sister Jess, who’s
a tunesmith at heart, they can present a united front in tackling a song, or outflank it, hitting it from three sides at once. “Sometimes one of us will have a song in its entirety and it’s about arranging vocals, and then inevitably the song will change” she tells me. “There’s not really a hard and fast formula. There’s lots of discussions!” Speaking of ‘discussions’, I ask what effect becoming a single, touring entity — making music for a living, as opposed to making it for the love of it — has had on the sisterly dynamic that’s so to the fore in any discussion about their music, and she pauses with a “hmmmm…” before admitting that it takes a bit of work. “You have to kind of

make a conscious effort to not let one spill in to the other,” she agrees. “In some ways it’s inevitable, especially in the last few years when we’ve been touring very intensively, and having less and less of a life outside that. You have to have some sort of boundary between us being bandmates and sisters and colleagues. You have to think about emails, accountants, the label…it’s essentially a business. We are business partners, and we never really thought of that when we started together. That’s something you have to be objective about. We’re still learning as we go.” The Staves are performing at The Everyman on May 7th at 8pm. Tickets are €22 from everymancork.com.

Before I started in Women’s Fitness I struggled continuously with my weight, but never had the motivation to do anything about it until I saw a photo from a Christmas party where I took over most of the photo! One of my good friends was speaking to me about a very good gym in Cork which catered to all abilities. I asked her to find out about gym membership hoping that she would forget. True to form she didn't and I ended up joining Women's Fitness. From the moment I went into the gym I felt at ease. I was conscious of the fact that I was a lot heavier than your average gym goer and was nervous when I initially started. I remember my first personal training session where I hid by the wall trying to lift 1kg dumbbells! Everyone at the gym was very welcoming and I felt as if they were rooting for me to succeed and succeed I did. While I have lost a decent amount of weight I know that my journey is far from over and I still have another bit to go before I can say that I am happy.
Nutrition is key and meeting Lorraine has changed my thought process when it comes to food. She showed me that healthy food doesn’t need to be boring and has been with me since day one of my journey. Words will never express how much I appreciate what all staff at Women’s Fitness have done. Even when I was having a bad day (and there were many) they were always there to make sure I didn’t fall off the wagon and I was driven to succeed. They offer a wide range of classes, my favourites being Kettlebells and Boxercise. Personal training sessions, while challenging, are a good way to work on specific areas. I would highly recommend Women’s Fitness to everyone. If you are motivated you will succeed and I am proof that no matter what your starting weight is, once you commit you can achieve anything.
