erious concern has been expressed about the Direct Provision accommodation system for asylum seekers, which has been deemed “not fit for purpose”. A report from the Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions has outlined that a series of changes are needed to the existing system. There are five Direct Provision accommodation centres in Cork: Ashbourne House, Glounthaune; Kinsale Road; Glenvera, Wellington Road; Clonakilty Lodge and Drishane Castle in Millstreet. Last September, residents at the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre undertook a well–publicised
‘strike’ against conditions there, locking supervising staff out of the facility. By February, residents had noted an improvement in living conditions there, but emphasised that there was still some way to go. Spokesman Lucky Khambule told The Cork News there had been a “number of satisfactory changes”, highlighting a decision to begin housing residents two to a room, rather than three. The report has recommended further improvements, including that applicants be given access to the labour market within nine months of arrival, and that the inmates’ €19.10 allowance be “raised significantly”. The committee called for the Reception and Integration Agency (RIA) to establish a pre-ombudsman indepen-
dent complaints system for residents, and for the respective jurisdictions of the Ombudsman for Public Service and the Ombudsman for Children be extended to include the Direct Provision system. It also recommends that Freedom of Information be extended to include Direct Provision and the Reception and Integration Agency. Joe Moore of Anti-Deportation Ireland (ADI) said Direct Provision accommodation should be closed immediately: “On the one hand they are saying how dreadful the situation is while the same time they are recommending that people work and that the €19.10 allowance be increased,” he said. continued on page 2

Lusitania remembered
Editor’s letter
I
t’s been 100 years since the Lusitania sank, torpedoed off the coast of Cork in an attack which cost the lives of 1,198 people and would lead directly to the deaths of many more, serving as the catalyst which brought the US into the global catastrophe we now call World War I. The event has been marked all over Cork. President Higgins spoke in Cobh, where a memorial was unveiled to mark the passing of a century since the great ship went down with so many souls, and smaller memorials have been dotted along the county’s coast. There have been speeches and solemn reenactments, and even tears. The tragedy began to unfold on May 7th, 1915, just about 11 miles off the Old Head Of Kinsale. A single torpedo sped through the chilly water and hit home on Lusitania’s starboard side, to the bow. The enormous vessel reared out of the water, making many of the lifeboats almost inaccessible. Eventually, only six of them made it down to the sea. Within 20 minutes, the ship was on the seabed, and over a thousand people were dead or dying. That’s what still echoes with us today, 100 years on. The sudden blow, the helplessness, the quick death, and the frantic efforts of horrified Corkonians to help, too often in vain. It was, as President Higgins said in his speech, “the unthinkable horror”. Onlookers raced to boats and pointed their prows towards the disaster. We may look back ruefully at the callous strike from U–20 or with sadness and empathy at the chaos that followed, but the enormous outpouring of solidarity and the frantic efforts to help can still speak to us too, even a century later. By the time the war ended in 1918, the entire social, economic and political landscape of the world had changed. Empires fell, families were sundered, new and terrible lessons had been learned, and new kinds of politics had sprung up from the desolation. It’s hard to imagine that there has ever been a century of more change or catastrophe, but we can still indentify with the fear, the panic and the fury. As we commemorate such immense loss, it’s well worth looking around at what the world has become. Cork would hardly be recognisable to someone who bought their Cunard ticket in 1915. Yes, many of the buildings remain, but can you imagine trying to explain the profligation of traffic and steel and glass and smartphones to someone from that generation? Where would we find common ground? We would find it in the same place we always find it: in our capacity to set aside our differences and to try our hardest to help those who desperately need to be helped. All the iPhones or tablets or flatscreen TVs in the world can’t extinguish that part of us. In the middle of another tragedy at the mid point of one of the most tragic decades in human history, that was the instinctive reaction of our great grandfathers and great grandmothers, and the fact that they couldn’t do more is what still sits heavy with us today. It’s impossible to think about the sinking of that ship without also remembering the valour which went with it, and even with all that followed and the immense suffering that unfolded as a direct result of Lieutentant Walther Schwieger’s order to fire that torpedo, the actions of so many people so desperate to help ought to inspire us.

‘Further industrial action is inevitable’ By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
As pupils across Cork head into the final stretch before their Junior and Leaving Certificate exams, industrial action is “inevitable” if an agreement on proposals over the Junior Cycle is not met, according to unions representing secondary teachers. A lunchtime protest involving up to 27,000 teachers nationwide took place at school gates yesterday, Thursday, over aspects of the framework for Junior Cycle proposed by the Department of Education and Skills, namely that 60% would be marked externally and 40% would be assessed in schools by teachers.
ASTI president–elect Máire Ní Chiarba, a teacher at Coláiste an Phiarsaigh in Glanmire, informed The Cork News that teachers “are not going away” on the issue: “We believe in the stance we have taken and we have taken that stance in the best interest of students in our care. They deserve no less,” she said. “It’s very unfortunate that we are being pushed into this situation, but teachers are very resolute and are totally behind the decision to not get involved in the assessment of their own students.” Ms Ní Chiarba added teachers want the Junior Cycle to be modernised. “We are completely in favour of change. We want portfolios, project work, practical work and orals, but we want them externally as-
Máire Ní Chiarba
sessed,” she said. “All our arguments are educationally based and for educational reasons — standards in education, fairness for our students, and objectivity.” ASTI President Philip Irwin added it is “extraordinary” that Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan is “proceeding with
implementation without the support of teachers”. “A continuation of this approach would mean that further industrial action is inevitable. We believe a resolution is within reach, but it requires further intensive engagement between the teacher unions and the department,” he said. Minister Jan O’Sullivan stated that it is “disappointing we still have action by the teachers’ unions rather them coming back to the table”. “We are not going to solve it outside the school gates, we’re going to solve it around a table,” she said on Newstalk Breakfast. The minister said she has “moved considerably” on the proposals, but needed “some movement from the other side”.
Direct Provision ‘not fit for purpose’ continued from page 1 “That would envision some continuation of the institution, and obviously we would prefer if they called for the closure of the 34 centres.” “There are people up in the Kinsale Road that have lived there for over 10 years,” Mr Moore told The Cork News. “The son of a friend of mine there will celebrate his 10th
birthday later this month. That child was born in Direct Provision. He’s now 10 years old and it’s the only life he knows. He’s not unique.” Mr Moore outlined that “small little reforms” are “not what these people want or need”, but rather that the system be closed down and returned to the situation that existed prior to Direct Provision. “They are all prisons. They (the residents) don’t have the
right to work, are expected to survive on €19.10 and more importantly, don’t know when they are getting out. It’s a disgrace,” he said. Committee chair Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said the report was focused on the extension of the remit of the Ombudsman for Public Service, the Ombudsman for Children and the Freedom of Information Acts. “However, when we started to hold hearings we felt we had
to go much further,” said Deputy Mac Lochlainn: “We have pulled no punches, and said the system is not fit for purpose.” He added that Direct Provision is “not reflective of the real values of the Irish people”. “As we have sent so many of our sons and daughters across the globe, you’d think we would have one of the most compassionate approaches in Europe, but actually we have one of the hardest,” he concluded.

The Tyndal Institute
Tyndall strike ‘will not affect exams’ Striking SIPTU members at UCC’s Tyndall National Institute have maintained that the university’s summer examinations will not be affected by their plans to picket the campus on Wednesday, May 13th. President of UCC Dr Michael B Murphy said this week that the union’s planned picket will cause “immeasurable anxiety, loss and damage to students” during a stressful exam period. Tyndall workers however — who are striking due to a pay dispute with the university — maintain that this argument is a “red herring.” “We have instructed all our members that no examinations are to be interfered with. Our members will facilitate exams in the university as normal, and we have communicated this to UCC Students’ Union,” Bill Mulcahy, SIPTU, told The Cork News. Tyndall’s SIPTU–represented staff maintain they are underpaid in comparison to their counterparts based on the university’s main campus. A report carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 2014 advised that most of Tyndall’s staff should receive a pay increase averaging €9,034 to bring their pay in line with UCC staff. SIPTU however disputes the
“No examinations are to be interfered with.” methodology used to arrive at this conclusion, and maintains that the report does not adequately address their concerns. UCC has said that an appeals process is open to those unhappy with the report: “Access to the independent appeals officer is available to any staff member in Tyndall who is dissatisfied with the outcome of the Job Evaluation Exercise. “In such circumstances the University cannot accept that there is any justification for this industrial action, particularly during the examination period,” said Dr Murphy. According to Mr Mulcahy however, the appeals process put in place by UCC management is “neither solid or robust,” leading to his union’s industrial action.

The senior Police Scotland officer in charge of the investigation into the murder of Cork nurse Karen Buckley has penned an open letter thanking the Irish people for their support. It comes after the Scottish police received a “high number” of letters and emails from members of the public in both Ireland and
Scotland in recent weeks, expressing their appreciation for the work carried out into the investigation surrounding Karen’s death. The 24 year old, who was studying occupational therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University, disappeared during a night out in Glasgow in the early hours of Sunday morning, April
12th. A four–day intensive search ended in the recovery of her body on a farm in north Glasgow. Alexander Pacteau (21) has been charged with her murder. Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr of Police Scotland stated that throughout the investigation, the police received and continue to receive
messages of appreciation from people in Ireland. “I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone for taking the time to contact us and for their thanks and continued support,” he said. “It is very much appreciated by myself and the dedicated team of officers who are involved in the investigation.”

Cork explorer Clare O’Leary has made a successful start in her bid to cross the treacherous Greenland ice cap. The seasoned adventurer is part of a six–person international team, which includes Kerry native Mike O’Shea, attempting to cross frozen Greenland using dogs. In what is expected to be the most challenging part of the three-week expedition, the team’s initial goal is to access the ice cap on foot. In his first blog entry this week, O’Shea, from Dingle, County Kerry, said progress had gone well. “We ended up with a late start, lots to do with sorting dog food, shipping our clothes etc to the other side, but it
was a lovely day and we have started the process of picking our way through the icefall,” he said. “There is plenty of snow, which certainly makes life easier. Everyone is in good form and the process of coming up with systems starts, just so you get a feel of tent life again and find the easiest and most efficient way of doing everything.” Mr O’Shea and Dr O’Leary have said traversing the 575km Greenland ice sheet — the world’s second largest ice mass outside Antarctica — could be their most perilous adventure yet. “We’re very well prepared for this, but there are some very real risks we will face, like polar bears,” said O’Shea. “Temperatures can get as low as -30ºC and when you consider the temperature of a
freezer is about -18ºC, that will tell you how cold it is. It gets into your bones. There will be very strong winds and horrific storms, which could quickly rip your tent away. If we lose a tent we’ll be in big trouble, because we are not carrying any spare ones. “If we do run into problems, we could be about 300km away from the nearest town and the weather would need to be on our side for a rescue helicopter to be able to reach us.” O’Shea and O’Leary have previously successfully completed the Patagonian ice cap, the 640km frozen Lake Baikal and the Southern Kilimanjaro ice cap, as part of their ambitious ‘Ice Project’. It is hoped that Irish Water’s €22 million investment in improving bathing water at Font Strand Beach in Youghal (pictured) will benefit the town’s “vital” tourism industry, says a local councillor. A recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report classified water at the beach as “poor”, saying it was contaminated with agricultural runoff, direct sewage discharge, and other substances. Furthermore, Youghal’s Red Barn strand lost its Blue Flag status in 2013. Irish Water is now set to begin work on a 24–month waste water treatment plan at Front Strand that will amount to
€22.8 million in total investment. “This construction project is vitally important. Losing our Blue Flag hurt the town, and this will help address that. “The town is particularly dependent on tourism, so ensuring our water is of high quality will be of huge benefit,” Cork County Councillor Mary Linehan–Foley told The Cork News. While Cllr Linehan–Foley highlighted the benefits the investment will bring to the town, she stressed that work needs to commence as soon as possible: “The latest update is that work will begin in six to eight months. Ideally, it would al-
ready be underway, but the timeframe is reasonable,” she said. Announcing the investment, Jerry Grant of Irish Water stressed the importance of government funding for the improvement of water infrastructure in Ireland: “It is not acceptable in a modern economy that so many of our towns are discharging raw sewage directly into the environment and that so many of our waste water treatment plants fail to regularly operate to environmental standards”. “We need to invest billions into our water infrastructure and this can not be raised from customers alone,” he said.

Tax relief to restore city’s historic homes Cork is part of a new urban regeneration incentive that will focus on the regeneration of its historic centre. Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford are also involved in the Living City Initiative — a scheme of property tax reliefs which applies in certain “special regeneration areas”. The aim of the Living City incentive is to bring life back into the heart of these cities by offering tax relief for qualifying expenditure incurred on the refurbishment or conversion of certain buildings where conditions are
met. This is a targeted initiative at areas which are most in need of attention. The Special Regeneration Areas of Cork City are available for viewing at corkcity.ie/services/strategicplanningeconomicdevelopment/grantschemes, and the scheme remains open for five years. Fianna Fáil Finance Spokesperson Michael McGrath stated there is now a “real opportunity” to encourage more families to live in Cork City centre. “This will bring a new vitality to areas that are in need of revitalisation,” he said.
Eatery ‘elbows’ its way onto food guide A Cork city restaurant features in a new food guide on the Wild Atlantic Way by a global travel search engine. Elbow Lane on Oliver Plunkett Street has been included in The Essential Foodie Guide to the Wild Atlantic Way on Checkin — the new travel blog from Trivago. Sarah Moyles, Checkin writer
and Tipperary native said “Elbow Lane was selected for our guide because of its top-notch food, dedicated customer service and excellent home– brewed beers. The fact that dishes are cooked over a wood-fired grill in full-view of guests really makes the restaurant stand out.”
Power to the Purple! Cork City is going for purple, as it vies for status akin to the Blue Flag for beaches. An application is being prepared to seek out Purple Flag status for Leeside, which would mean international accreditation signifying that the city centre meets or surpasses standards of excellence in managing its evening and night–time economy and social life. If successful, the application will see a major vote of confidence in Cork as a destination in itself. The Purple Flag application process has brought together
a multitude of stakeholders through the Cork City Centre Forum, with Cork Chamber acting as coordinator.
As part of that application process, volunteers will be taking to the city centre streets today, Friday, asking
for opinions with regard to the city as a location for an evening and/ or night out. Chair of the Cork City Centre Forum Gillian Keating said the awarding of a Purple Flag to Cork city would “further secure our footing as a city that is looking to the future”. “The cities that achieve Purple Flag status are those that are safe, vibrant, appealing, well managed and that offer a positive experience to customers visiting the city centre during the evening and night time,” she said.

Cork man faces 12 years in jail in the Philippines A Cork man who was found guilty of possessing 0.3 grammes of cannabis is facing 12 years in a Filipino jail. 53–year–old Éanna O’Cochlain, who is a mental health nurse from Blackrock, was travelling on an internal flight in the Philippines with his wife on Monday, July 14th 2013. He was searched by airport staff three times and on the third search, two roll–up cigarettes containing 0.3284 grammes of cannabis were produced. Mr O’Cochlain was found guilty of the possession of the two cigarettes, and was sentenced to 12 years in jail under the islands’ harsh drugs laws. Although he was released on bail pending an appeal, his brother, Patrick told the 96FM Opinion Line that he is now “trapped” in the Philippines. “He absolutely disputes the charge. He’s a mental health nurse: a professional who deals with addiction,” Patrick told The Cork News.

“It’s basically a shakedown.” Patrick claims his brother was “set up” due to the prime location of his house: “He bought a beachfront property 20 years ago for next
to nothing. Now it happens to be on millionaires’ row. “He’s being bullied into selling the property by a number of powerful characters. It’s basically a shakedown,” said Patrick. The Coughlan family are attempting to initiate a campaign calling for Éanna’s release. Patrick has appealed to Cork people looking to get involved — particularly webmasters — to contact him at Patrick. coughlan@hotmail.com.

For most, the thought of sitting through these end–of– year exams brings feelings of foreboding and anxiety, but it is important to remember that these exams are only a small part of the greater test that is life itself. Nothing will be decided or determined on the back of these results that cannot be undone or amended later on. So, for the thousands of Leaving Certificate students about to sit their final school exams, I offer the following life advice for the future:
“There is a huge amount to be said for following your gut and backing your own judgement.”
1
Don’t covet what you don’t understand. Life has a nasty habit of compensating a desperate thirst for enlightenment with massive disappointment, and the more active the imagination and anticipation, the bigger the crash back to reality. Take each step as it comes and try not to heighten expectations too much. That isn’t a call for pessimism, but adjusting your expectations to service realistic ambitions won’t see you too far wrong.
2
‘Never meet your heroes’. The more I think about that advice, the sounder it seems. Investing in hero worship is a pointless and futile exercise unless you’re prepared to accept that they’re only human. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to mimic genius or setting goals based on another person’s achievements, but artificial adoration for its own sake is a poisonous and unhealthy pastime. And ultimately, it can only lead to disappointment. Be happy in your own skin and don’t place too much faith in becoming that stranger on a screen. Your closest allies and role models may be all around you.
3
The driving force behind many high–end achievers burns from the inside out. Most successful people motivate themselves through their own personal desires and wishes and not through an ambition to replicate another person’s success. The most efficient workers are those for whom the process is just as important and enjoyable as the end product. Ask yourself a question: To what end would a person pursue a goal if the journey to the destination was not enjoyable? Most would give up long before completion. Many wouldn’t even give the process a second thought to begin with. After all, time is precious enough without spending it being miserable.

These exams may feel like a gun to the head, but I promise you, from here on out, the options you take will be largely of your own choosing. Choose wisely, but never feel obliged to stick to a beaten road. There are always other options.
following your gut and backing your own judgement. If you need some help along the way, seek out a professional. Nobody I know ever got rich on the back of a free tip, and something that’s not worth charging for, is usually not worth listening to.
4
Don’t carry school hang–ups over into the next stage of your life. Your classmates are growing up and maturing, just as you are. The people you think you might never see again could be the decision makers in your quest for success. Don’t do or say anything over the last days of school that you might later regret. I haven’t met a single person that could tell me they were the same at 17 or 18 that they
Free advice is usually best ignored. If a stranger offers you something for nothing, it’s generally because they’re trying to sell you something. If the advice was worth heeding in the first place, you probably wouldn’t be getting it for free. As social media continues to infiltrate our everyday lives, there will always be someone willing to offer their two cents worth. There is a huge amount to be said for

were at 30. Or 40. Or 50. Holding a grudge for a teenage hang–up is pointless and exhausting.
6
Save money and never rely on the banks for anything. If I had to start over, I would set aside 30% of everything I earn and save it. Some of you will take up jobs directly out of school. Some of you might get part–time jobs to get you through college. Whatever road you decide to take, take 30% of your wages and stash it away. You never know when you will need it and as a life habit, it will serve you in good stead. If the money is gone at source, you won’t miss it. And nothing beats the security of knowing that you have a few quid stashed

away should you need it. The reverse is absolutely terrifying. Trust me on that one.
7
Stay positive, but never be afraid to share a problem. Nobody can go through life on their own and without help. Seeking out assistance is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a reflection of maturity and a willingness to look for other options. Advice from friends, family and even professional guidance can be the difference between success and failure. Bottling fears and anxiety is a fast route to an early grave. To all the students sitting exams, may I wish you the best of luck. And remember: always answer the question you are asked!

What the heck is a tapir?! Tapirs, native to South America, are ungulates, quite closely related to horses and rhinos, and a little more distantly related to cattle, sheep, camels and pigs. As you might guess from looking at them, they’re also far–flung relatives of elephants.
A tapir’s tale Fota Wildlife Park’s newest arrival is badly in need of a name. The east Cork attraction is looking for the public’s help to choose a name for a four– week–old male baby tapir. The mammal is the first calf of parents Maya and Bazil and also the first birth of a Brazil-
ian tapir at the Cork park since 2006. Stephen Ryan, head of Marketing at Fota Wildlife Park, said that to gain public interest in the Brazilian tapirs, whose population has been decreasing in the wild, the park has decided to run a competition to name him.
“We know the public love suggesting names for the animals and we are sure they will come up with another great name following on from the suggestions of ROG the Cheetah, Shay Gibbon, Zedward the Zebra and Fada the Giraffe in the past,” said Mr
NEW MINDS FITNESS ACADEMY
Ryan. The winning name submitted to fotawildlife.ie/blog/ baby-tapir-at-fota-wildlifepark-needs-a-name will be announced on Monday, May 11th, with the winner getting the chance to experience what goes on behind the scenes at the park.
Tapirs may look adorable — particularly when they’re as young as Fota’s new addition — but when cornered, or when a mother is defending her calf, they can deliver a very nasty bite thanks to their incredibly powerful jaws. They’re vegetarians, and in
the wild those big jaws and massive teeth help them to forage on nuts, berries and leaves. They may look a bit on the tubby side, but they’re very strong. Tapirs are fond of swimming and mud baths, and have even been seen casually strolling along the bottoms of rivers, eating water weeds. They’re fond of water for hygiene too, as they’re frequently seen standing still so that fish can nibble at the parasites in their fur.

Bird speaks
Easkey Britton
Former RTÉ presenter Charlie Bird is to MC I’m Voting Yes Ask Me Why, a Yes Equality Cork open forum on Sunday, May 10th. Taking place at the advocacy group’s 8 North Mall headquarters, the event is being held to answer questions about May 22nd’s equality referendum. “It’s really important that
we have this conversation in Cork, with two weeks to the referendum there’s lots of time for people to have their questions answered,” said Mr Bird. I’m Voting Yes Ask Me Why is a national, open mic tour of Ireland that will hear ‘Yes’ supporters outlining their personal reasons for supporting the referendum.

Beach cleaning project for Cork E M A G A Z I N
The first woman to surf the 15–foot Aileen’s wave off the coast of Clare has called on the people of Cork to join Ireland’s largest coastal cleanup initiative. Donegal surfer Easkey Britton this week launched the Coca-Cola Clean Coasts Week 2015, a scheme that includes voluntary beach cleans, coastal celebration events, a photography competition and more. Being held from today, Friday, May 8th to Sunday, May 17th, the cleanup will hit strands at Inchydoney, Glounthaune, Schull, Blackrock, Garnish, Roscarberry, Castletownbere, Ballydehob, Whiting Bay, Ardmore, Cuskinny and Carrigaloe. “Clean Coasts Week is about the power of the ocean to connect. Through coming together to celebrate our coasts at Clean Coasts events around the country and by joining local groups for beach cleanups

we create a stronger sense of community…a community connected by the sea,” said Ms Britton, launching the scheme. Highlighting the importance of the scheme, it has been revealed that in 2014 the Clean Coasts group removed a 500,000 pieces of marine litter items from our beaches. This included items deliberately discarded on Ireland’s beaches, or which were lost on shore or at sea. “While Clean Coasts activities take place all year round, the impact during Clean Coast week is significant. “Year on year, more and more volunteers are joining Ireland’s largest coastal cleanup. The week is a great opportunity to connect with your local Clean Coasts group and to take part in events all over Ireland,” said Erica Roseingrave of Coca-Cola. For more information and to register for the scheme, see cleancoasts.org.

Repossession motive disputed With the news that the number of repossession orders granted in the Cork Circuit Court has increased by 833 percent in the first three months of 2015, a Cork City Council member has criticised the number of such orders granted to state–owned banks. 75 repossession orders were granted in Cork Circuit Court in the first three months of this year, in comparison to nine in the same period in 2014. “It’s particularly disgraceful that so many of these orders have been granted to State– owned banks,” said Councillor Mick Barry. “It’s clear what’s going on. The government have announced that they intend to privatise shares in these banks, and they are being ‘fattened up’ ahead of this process,” he told The Cork News. Seamus Coffey, a UCC economist, disputed Cllr Barry’s claims: “Most of the legal proceedings are being issued by non state-owned banks; although
Cork colleges win ‘course of the year’ awards A CIT master’s degree has been named Science Postgraduate Course of the Year at Dublin’s Graduate Recruitment Awards, while a UCC course has taken the ‘best business course’ accolade. The IT’s MSc in Computational Biology beat off competition from DIT, NUIG, and UCC to claim top spot in the awards’ science category.
Computational biology involves the use of computers in biological research, and the development code and algorithms to predict how certain biological systems will develop. Computational analysis is becoming increasingly common in modern biological research, and the term ‘computational biologist’ can refer to wide range of roles including
data analyst, statistician, and software developer. “This is a remarkable achievement for CIT, given the level of competition from across the IT and university sectors,” said Dr Brendan O’Connell, head of CIT’s Department of Biological Sciences. Meanwhile, UCC’s MSc in Information Systems for Business Performance also
made its mark at the awards. The course, which can boast almost 100% employability, integrates core business and IT skills to give students a real–world understanding of how to use technology to the benefit of business. Dr Karen Neville and Dr Audrey Grace, co-directors of the MSc ISBP, attributed the result to the uncompromising business focus of the programme.
Cork Airport staff learning to save lives Cllr Mick Barry
“It’s clear what’s going on.” Permanent TSB do seem to be particularly prevalent in using the legal system. “I’m not sure, however, that it tells us anything about privatisation,” he said.
Cork Airport is to offer cardiac first responder training (CFR) to all its staff at the discounted rate of €50. The fee will cover all course and certification costs for CFR, training that has been used to save numerous victims of cardiac arrest on airport grounds including most recently a customer at Cork International Hotel. Under the terms of the scheme, emergency first re-
sponders will train staff at the airport, and a public defibrillator has been installed adjacent to the check–in desks. “The course is a beneficial life skill that can be learned in a four–hour training session. “Since 2002, we have been trained to respond to all kinds of medical emergencies and especially cardiovascular–related illnesses,” said Cork Airport fire officer Warren Delaforce. Mr Delaforce highlighted that the training can be beneficial outside the workplace, referring to a recent instance of a colleague saving a man’s life during a tennis match.

Water climbdown will provoke “cynicism” A Cork City councillor has said the government’s announcement that those who don’t pay their water charges will not face jail time is a “last throw of the dice” for the Fine Gael/Labour coalition. “Looking back over the last seven or eight months, it is clear this government is on the ropes. It has been one row back after another. ”This is just another episode in a continuing saga of government climbdowns,” Ted Tynan of The Workers’ Party told The Cork News. Cllr Tynan went on to say that the announcement will be met with “great cynicism” from those in the anti–water charges movement, and that the threat of jail time held little influence over those opposing the charges: “The threat of jailing didn’t have any effect on our supporters, anyway. Most felt that they were opposed to the charge, and that the government could do what they like with them,” he said.
Performance overheads
“It’s clear this government is on the ropes.”
Cllr Ted Tynan
While the threat of jail has been removed from legislation dealing with non–payment of water charges, it is expected that provisions allowing for the deduction of the charge from wages and social welfare payments will be included. Criticising these measures,
Cllr Tynan said that: “This announcement will only reinforce the anger and frustration of the general public, and demonstrations and protests will only get bigger.” “The determination of the people and their willingness to fight the issue will prevail,” he added.

Cork sporting stars back ‘Yes’ vote Cork athletes Peter O’Mahony, Derval O’Rourke and Donal Óg Cusack have provided compelling personal testimonies as to why they are voting ‘Yes’ in the Marriage Equality Referendum. “This May, Ireland needs a result,” said Cusack, former Cork hurling goalkeeper. Sprint hurdles legend O’Rourke added that “we achieve more when we

work as a team”. Chair of the Fine Gael LGBT Deputy Jerry Buttimer TD said: “It’s great to see some of our top sportspeople publicly calling for marriage equality in Ireland. These people are recognised as leaders in their communities and in their sport and it’s hugely encouraging that they are putting their weight behind a ‘Yes’ vote.”
Study into advancing hygiene on wards A year–long study involving a Cork hospital has been launched to advance hygiene on hospital wards. Health Innovation Hub in conjunction with South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and University Hospital Waterford will aim to advance routine infection prevention and control measures in hos-
pital orthopaedic wards. The Infection Prevention and Hygiene Management study consists of three interventions in a test ward and comparison to a control ward. These interventions are to be delivered by Surewash, an interactive hand washing training video pedestal that teaches the correct hand washing
procedure based on gaming technology; SleepAngel who have created impervious, sanitisable heat–sealed pillows; and MEG Medical eGuides, who have produced a hand hygiene audit tool that allows electronic auditing of hand washing technique and provides a collation of results.

Daytripper Paddy O'Brien (75) is a former Cork Person of the Year and founder and organiser of Cork's Over 60s Talent Competiton. Established in 1977, this year's final takes place on Sunday, June 7th in City Hall.
I
’m a light sleeper, and most mornings I’d be up around eight o’clock. What I would do for my breakfast is this: I’d have porridge, and then I’d pause for a while – just take some time. Then I would have toast, and sometimes I might have scrambled eggs. Then later on, I might go for a cup of tea and a scone with someone. I was inspired back in the 70s to start the over–60s talent competition for one reason, and one reason only: to combat loneliness. The medical profession states that loneliness is like one of the diseases that can kill people. It’s a desperate thing to experience. I said ‘If I can contribute in any way to try bring some joy into people’s lives, that would be great.’ I got my social conscience from one person: my mother. My mother taught me the most important thing to bring through life, and that is to always treat people with respect; be courteous; be mannerly – all people, especially the elderly. I had five brothers and five sisters, and we were taught to love, care for and respect elderly people. That’s the environment we were brought up in. It’s great to see contestants make friends. At rehearsals, total strangers meet. Total strangers, and they all become the best of friends, and they all encourage each other and there’s no rivalry there. They’re all helping each other. I’ve suffered from loneliness myself. I lost my wife a number of years ago. There is nothing in this world worse than losing your partner. I didn’t realise how desperate and awful it was going to be. No words can explain it: the shock...the emptiness in your life. Your whole life changes completely.
Interview by Eoghan McNeill Picture by Miki Barlok
“Always treat people with respect; be courteous; be mannerly.”
When I talk to groups about becoming a widow or a widower, I say that nothing prepares you for it. Your beautiful life is taken away from you. Nothing prepares you for bereavement. There are no training courses. You have to go through that awful, desperate period in your life, and with that period, there is loneliness.
WE ASKED BUSINESS PEOPLE IN CORK, WHAT THEY WANTED
And the majority want a broker who will Listen to them, Understand their business and offer them Impartial Advice and Complete Business Protection
I have two sons — Brian and Ronan — and the saddest moment of my life was standing with them in Kilcully graveyard after Patricia’s funeral mass in Whitechurch. It was a cold, wild Thursday in March 2005. I met a man this morning. Two weeks ago he celebrated his 60th anniversary. He was telling me he sang in the Op-
era House as one of my contestants 21 years ago. What I said to him was this: ‘Enjoy every minute,’ and then I paused. I said: ‘No, don’t enjoy every minute, enjoy every second.’ Because it’s a desperate life when you lose your partner. When I became a widower first, I was useless at cooking. I was really very bad. I was hopeless.

That made my situation worse. Now, I’m able to go home at lunchtime and make myself a salad and some meat. For dinner this evening, I’ll cook a chicken, roast potatoes and I’ll do parsnips and carrots. It took me a long time to take up the cooking. It took me while to ‘give in.’ Cooking
is actually far more simple than you’d realise. I thought I had to be like Darina Allen — you don’t. Now, I can cook steak, I can do chicken, I can do salmon, I can make chips. I can look after myself. I do a lot of walking. It’s my favourite way to relax after dinner. There’s nothing better, really. I love walking to Ballycotton beach. On even the coldest day, once you have the right gear and proper walking shoes, you’re grand. You go for a walk and all your problems, any anxiety, just disappears. I had a wonderful experience a few years ago: I met a nice lady, a companion. I would encourage people to try to meet a companion, too, because it’s been wonderful for me. Her name is Betty. I love walking and she loves walking. I love music and she’s in a choir. There’s nothing greater than to have a companion of similar interests. I’d say to anyone to get involved in groups and meet people. I’m very lucky that I met someone. I would never wait later than 12 o’clock to go to bed. I like watching TG4. I find that I enjoy watching TG4 because I left school at a young age, and wasn’t able to fully develop my Irish. My mother was a school teacher, and she had instilled a great love of Irish in me. I have cúpla focail now, and I find that watching shows on TG4 helps me pick up new words here and there. Before going to bed, I think about my two sons and my three grandchildren. They mean the world to me. I always pray at night, and thank God that I have my health. I pray and I ask God to always continue blessing me with my health, because without my health, I have nothing. I am very grateful for that, and I thank Him every night.

Gaelscoil Golf Classic! Leno
Leno the Siberian Husky is eight months old and has to be rehomed through no fault of his own. He is already housetrained, and great with people and other dogs. He
loves long walks, because like all huskies he needs plenty of exercise or he will get bored and depressed. Leno is looking for an active home and would be a good companion to another dog.
Oggie
Oggie is about a year old and is a rough–haired Patterdale Terrier. He is fully house trained and sleeps the whole night without a peep. Oggie loves to play ball and loves his walks. He is as cute as a button, and once he gets to know you he loves his cuddles. Nobody has a bad word to say about him. The family who is lucky enough to adopt Oggie will really be getting a little gem.
Maggie
Two–year–old lurcher Maggie was found at the side of the road in a collapsed heap and now she is a sleek, glowing, healthy lurcher just waiting for her happy ending. She has a lovely sweet nature is fully house trained and very good on the lead. She really enjoys her walks and then likes nothing more then to cuddle up on the couch, and would love to have the company of another dog. She can be a little giddy so children over ten for her. She will make a great addition to any family lucky enough to take her into their home.

Dear Editor, Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire is holding their 2nd Annual Golf Classic, on May 29th at Cork Golf Club in Little Island.
It’s our major fundraising event of 2015 and will raise funds for new sports facilities. All are welcome, Cliona
The other referendum Dear Lorcan, The 5050 group in Cork campaigned for gender quotas in the selection of candidates in electoral politics. 5050 came to recognise that particular barriers could only be overcome by forcing the ‘in’ group — men — to share the playing field fairly. As I see it the same argument holds true for the reduction in the age at which citizens can stand for President. Age should not be a barrier.
If the candidate is too inexperienced then the electorate doesn’t have to vote for them. I think a majority would be against an upper limit on the age of the presidential candidate because they were too old. Let us stop creating unecessary barriers to people who want to participate as candidates in our democracy. Thank you, Dr Colette Finn, Croaghta Park, Glasheen
Red Cross collection Sir, The Mallow Branch of the Irish Red Cross will be holding Church Gate Collections in Doneraile and Shanballymore this weekend. Any support would be great-
ly appreciated as all monies raised will be going towards the building of the new ambulance base. Kind Regards, Maeve

Cork girl to judge at film festival One of the world’s youngest film critics is flying the Cork flag on a panel this weekend to judge a series of films from around the world. Eight–year–old Kathleen Ruby O’Hea from Bandon
is on the Cinemagic Dublin Young Film Critics jury, part of the Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People currently taking place in Dublin. Junior and senior jury panels
— made up of young people ages eight to 18 from all over Ireland — have been chosen to watch and judge a selection of films. Chris Shaw, Cinemagic Festival programmer said: “The young film critics
jury offers young people the chance to meet others with a similar passion for film, to discuss and debate, and to make new friends, whilst expanding their understanding of the different genres of film.”

New retail bank for Wilton
KBC Bank Ireland is to open a second new retail banking hub in Cork. Located at the Wilton Shopping Centre on Sarsfield Road, the hub will augment KBC’s current city centre hub on Lapp’s Quay.
The retail bank will focus on providing a relaxed, contemporary space. Roisin Healy, Manager of KBC’s Wilton Hub, said: “We’re confident that customers in Wilton will enjoy using the hub as a modern
space to meet our team. As KBC continues to expand across towns and cities in Ireland, we are bringing greater choice and value to the market for consumers looking for a real banking alternative.”
E–funding deadline approaching fast
SMEs and micro-enterprises in Cork have until next Friday, May 15th to apply for funding from Optimise to help them whip their websites into shape. The fund is designed to help drive Irish businesses’ sales offerings online. This year’s purse is €150,000, and Optimise also provides training and services to small businesses. Cork’s SMEs, in common with their counterparts around Ireland, are failing to embrace e-commerce when compared to similar businesses abroad.
David Curtin, Chief Executive of the .ie domain registry, says “the absence of an online sales presence puts Irish businesses at a huge disadvantage to competitors. Irish consumers spend €4 billion buying online each year and many
SMEs are failing to tap into that revenue by not having a website which sells online. It acts as a major disincentive to attracting new and retaining existing customers, for whom buying online is now the norm.”
SME’s - Online and website information • 63% of Irish SMEs have a website • 91% cannot process sales online; • 62% cannot take sales orders online; • 68% cannot process payments online; • 51% don’t have the ability to interact directly with customers through social media or web chat; and • 54% don’t have responsive website designs for tablet or smartphone.

It’s important to note that only a quarter of those surveyed were pursuing a business–based college course, though 65% of business students already have a fully formed idea to try to develop after they graduate. Scientists form the next–highest cohort of business–minded college and university students; half of them have a
big idea at the back of their minds to take the world by storm once they’re finished their courses. Interestingly, 70% of students interested in developing their own business have a history of self-employment in their family, suggesting a correlation between entrepreneurial spirit being a regular part of a child’s life and being entrepreneurial later.

The weather is (slowly) getting warmer and before we know it we’ll be spending more of our time outdoors in the sun, and probably sweating a little more than we do now too! Now is a good time to get into the habit of drinking water regularly. The health benefits of drinking between two and three litres of water a day are hard to overstate: your skin will improve, your concentration and energy levels will improve, your digestion will improve, your risk of everything from bad breath to kidney stones to heart attacks will diminish and you’ll even help cut your appetite, so it’s easier to lose weight. Dehydration is one of the worst types of chronic distress you can put your body through. Remember, if you think you’re hungry and you don’t know what you want to eat, then you’re probably not hungry: you’re thirsty. Drink more water!

Are you considering an extension, what to take into consideration An extension is a great way to add space and value to your home - if it’s done well. So, how do you ensure the money you spend gets the results you need? If you are going to extend or renovate your home, there are a number of things to be considered in order to get the best out of the work that is being carried out. If you decide to use EBO we can offer you the expertise of our internal architect and engineer. When we meet with you we will get your ideas on what you want and advise you on how to maximise what you end up with. We will advise about the size, often going bigger will not cost too much more and it is important to get the design right, the size right, the scale right, and the proportions right. You want it to fit your needs, fit in with the existing house, and make the extension connect well internally with the existing space. Now is a great time to consider work on your existing property because of the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme. The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme provides for tax relief for Homeowners and Landlords by way of an Income Tax credit at 13.5% on repair, renovation or improvement works carried out on a main home or rental property by qualifying Contractors. Tax relief can be claimed on work over €4,405 (before VAT at 13.5%) and can be claimed on up to €30,000 before VAT at 13.5% on work carried out per property. This €4,405 (before VAT) can be the total from any number of jobs carried out and paid for by homeowners or landlords. Even if a person is spending more than €30,000 on work, the 13.5% tax credit can be claimed on the amount up to €30,000. So what does that actually mean in terms of money in your pocket? Any work a person has carried out where they have spent any amount between €4,405 and €30,000 before VAT can receive a tax credit of 13.5% of what they have paid out. So for example if you spend €5000, you will receive a tax credit of €595, with a limit to be claimed of €4050 per property. Even if you are not considering an extension to your property, EBO can offer any number of home improvement services from redecorating and painting, bathroom refurbishments, electrical work and gas and oil boiler servicing, repair and replacement. So whatever you need done in your property give us a call. For a limited time Ebo Home Rescue will include the services of their interior architect free of charge to help you design an amazing extension. If you’d love to make the most out of your house and turn it into the kind of home you’ve always wanted, without any broken promises or missed deadlines, do the sensible thing: call Ebo Home Rescue today on 021 2348524 or visit ebohomerescue.ie.

Exam–time stressbusters Smart Psychology founders Orla McLoughlin and Marianne Wall help people overcome difficulties in their lives through workshops, courses and one-to-one counselling, and this week — as the countdown to exams begins in earnest — some tips for parents on how to help their exam candidates handle the stress and strain! Stress levels for students often rise at this time of year. Some stress is good (we call good stress ‘eustress’) as it aids performance. Excessive pressure leads to the development bad stress (distress). You can support your child by using these psychological vitamins: Vitamin M – Mind yourself so that you are a calm presence for your child Vitamin N – Nutrition: En-
sure your child is fuelling his/her mind and body with healthy food Vitamin T – Tools: Ensure your child has a quiet, well lit, comfortable place to study. Vitamin R – Relaxation: Allow your child to meet friends. They relate to each other and form a very important support network. Vitamin E – Encourage your child. Let them know that they have the skills to cope with the situation. Do not dwell on things that cannot be changed. Focus on what can be done. Vitamin L – Listen! Do not lecture them. Talk with them as opposed to at them. Collaborate to solve problems. Ask how they plan on getting their work done, have they thought about breaking chunks down into small bits and so on.
Vitamin S – Sleep : Try to keep regular routines and encourage them to stop studying at a certain time to wind down before going to bed. Vitamin P – keep things in Perspective. Ensure they know that failing is not the end of the world and that you love him/her regardless of outcome.
Beware the burn
Get oriented If you’re casting about for ways to make the most of the outdoors as a family this month, why not consider orienteering? It’s a great way to gain an appreciation of the outdoors and nature, and the perfect way to burn up all that ex-
cess energy and get fit while you do. Filling up Tuesday evenings with short and long courses from May 12th until July 21st, the club’s excursions will take in some of the most beautiful parts of County Cork. Visit corko.net for more.
While this summer may not hit the heady heights of last year’s solar spectacular, skin specialists have warned that the traditional Irish laissez faire attitude towards sunshine and the damage it can cause could lead to dire consequences for our health in years to come. Last year, Cork was the sunburn capital of an extra–sunburnt Ireland, with the UV index here hitting danger level on no less than 95% or all the days between April and September, or 172 days out of 181. In spite of this, the message about protecting
our skin still isn’t getting through and this year a lot of effort is being put into getting Cork families to cover up, whether with clothes or decent sunscreen. Ireland has the highest incidence of non–melanoma skin cancer in all of Europe, with our famously pale complexions making us prime candidates for cancers and other skin ailments directly related to UV light. Since records began in 1994, there has been an 81% increase in cases.

Shake it up The way to Broadway Montfort College of Performing Arts is giving some of Cork’s smallest smallies a chance to harness their inner Oscar winner this summer with the return of the Broadway Babies Summer Camp, which will be on tour around County Cork in July and August. The five–day camp is spe-

Shaking Yoga is a form of yoga which, its practitioners say, will awaken “the energetical body” and connect you to yourself. The practice is based on shaking, which is said to “reignite the flow of light energy inside the body to flow once again from the feet to the top of the head”. Shaking yoga’s founder Ratu Bagus says the discipline can help to transform you to a healthier happier you,
and the movement has come to Cork: classes run twice weekly in the city centre — Tuesdays at 7:30pm at Eason’s Hill Community Centre in Shandon and Fridays at 6:15pm at South Parish Community Centre on Sawmill street, where you can see for yourself what’s involved for just €5.
Childhood trauma link to chronic diseases Cork researchers have found that people who experience traumatic events in childhood, such as being sexually abused, or their parents being incarcerated, are more likely to have chronic diseases. A study carried out by Health Research Board funded researchers at University College Cork is the first to show that adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are a specific concern in patients — particularly
those who suffer from two or more chronic diseases at the same time. The research, published in the journal Family Practice, involved just over 2,000 adults aged 50 to 69 years. HRB research fellow, Dr Carol Sinnott, and the lead author on the paper, outlined people who reported adverse childhood experiences were 60% more likely to develop multimorbidity than those who had no re-
ported ACE. “We found that as the number of chronic diseases a person had increased, so did the strength of the link between ACE and multimorbidity. While the results don’t infer causality, namely that having an ACE will lead you to develop multimorbidity, they do show a strong association between ACEs and a substantially increased risk of developing chronic diseases,” said Dr Sinnott.

Diary of a laser hair removal newbie: Part V Last September, The Cork News reporter Maria Tracey began a six–treatment course of laser hair removal at Therapie Clinic on Opera Lane. She’s now five treatments in.
Beautiful blush
Seven months into my laser hair removal at Therapie Clinic on Opera Lane, there’s no question that the race to remove all traces of unwanted hair before the summer has worked. I was tired of the razor nicks and red bumps that go hand–in–hand with the quest for smooth and gorgeous legs and underarms. By using the high-tech laser treatment at Therapie, my unwanted hair has been banished with minimal fuss and discomfort. With the summer sun hopefully set to reveal itself soon, skin–baring clothing is imminent, and by choosing laser there has been so many benefits to the hair removal procedure. It has meant fewer ingrown hairs, as the laser targets
hair deep within its follicle leading to smooth silky skin; and is also great for busy lifestyles, with less time spent shaving. Now with the penultimate treatment a success — lasting all of 10 minutes during my lunch break — just one more remains between me and the bikini season ahead. For more details on laser hair removal at Therapie phone 021 4278736 or email hello@therapieclinic.com.
Summer is here, and even though the sun may be refusing to shine, make-up can still embrace the summer shades. We love Catrice's Illuminating Blush, which is a double colour combination topped with subtle shimmer. It's €4.49 in pharmacies and Penneys stores.

Cruising along W
hen people are writing a history of the 21st Century, one of the big stories will be the evolution of cruise ships. All through the 20th century ships were very much the same and very much the preserve of the rich, but in the last 13 years the boundaries have been pushed out to such a level in terms of size and facilities that it’s no wonder cruising is enjoying the largest growth in the travel industry worldwide. Royal Caribbean are leading the way in making ships larger, more interesting and more affordable. They broke the mould when they launched the Oasis Of The Seas, which accommodates over 5,000 guests in 2,700 staterooms (don’t call them cabins!).
They even have neighbourhoods on board such as the Boardwalk and Central Park, and the great thing about the design is that you don’t really feel that you’re on board such a huge vessel, though huge it certainly is. The cost of the Oasis is reputed to be $1.3billion and, as if to emphasise the growth of the cruise industry, Royal Caribbean has built a second ship in this class — Allure of the Seas — and has ordered a third one. What better way to visit a selection of different cities and countries than to cruise? You unpack once, sail every evening and arrive in a new port in a new country the following morning wondering how you got there. People who reject cruising because they don’t like the sea are missing the point. The way it works is that
you arrive in port at 7.00am and choose to stay on board, get off and walk around by yourself, or take an organised trip. Either way the day is yours until 6.00pm, when the ship sails again. Once you have left port you start to get ready for dinner, have your meal, go to a show, visit the casino or one of the music bars or the disco and then retire for the night. The following morning you start all over again in a different place without even realising that you have sailed 100 miles. Cruising for your honeymoon is hugely popular, whether you choose to do so in the Mediterranean while staying in Europe or in the Caribbean, if you prefer to go Stateside. The relaxation that a cruise provides is the perfect antidote to all the hassle and drama of your wedding
day. All of a sudden you have nothing to do but enjoy each others’ company and the only decision you have to make is which restaurant to eat in. We’d recommend that you pay a little extra and take a stateroom with a balcony: not only does it give you a bit more room, but it is beautiful to sit out in the morning as you cruise into a port, or in the evening as you cruise out of a port. The most popular Mediterranean cruises are from Barcelona or Venice, and are best taken from May to October. You fly straight to the sun and your travel agent will arrange a night in town before you sail (this avoids any worries with flight delays) and your cruise will take you around the Med, or down the Croatian Coast towards Greece and Turkey. Should you opt to be a bit
more adventurous, then fly to Miami and sail the Caribbean. Cruises range from six to 13 nights and options include a six–night cruise with a week in Florida or the full 13 nights cruising to places that you might have previously just dreamt of, such as St. Lucia, Barbados and Antigua. You tend to get a younger crowd on a Caribbean Cruise while the Mediterranean gets a bigger mix of nationalities. ‘Royal Weddings’ are a new concept for Irish people but are becoming quite popular. It is an area where you need expert advice but once you are set up properly, you can be assured of a wedding to remember. You have two options: one is to have a blessing on board or a renewal of your vows, and the other is to get married at one of the ports of call. You cannot actually get
married on the ship; it has to be in a country to have the marriage legally recognised. Popular ports to get married in are Mexico and Jamaica in the Caribbean or Madeira in Europe, and you can choose to do it with just the two of you or bring the whole gang along and make it one big party. The blessings on board and the renewal of the vows are done very tastefully in the ship’s chapel, and Royal Caribbean marks the occasion with a lovely renewal keepsake certificate. If you wanted to “push the boat out a bit further” you could have the ceremony on one of Royal’s private islands in the Caribbean. There are lots of options; for the full range of speak to a cruise specialist such as Linda Cronin or Sheila Deasy in Lee Travel who have great experience in these matters.

yourself somewhere venerable, though, and it hugs the hungry coast tightly, inviting you to feel part of the Wild Atlantic Way, of which it’s arguably the midpoint. Clifden is great to see in its own right, but as a base from which to explore this untamed quarter of Galway it’s magnificent. Connemara National Park and the stunning beauty
of Kylemore Abbey, gardens and church are just a few minutes drive, as is Galway Bay and the even more breathtaking coastline along the Sky Road. Stay at Clifden Station House Hotel right in the centre of town to be close to everything, as well as to try their exceptional menu — the mussels in particular are worth the drive by themselves!

In contrast with the ancient landscape, the town of Clifden, long–hailed ‘capital’ of Connemara and a tourist destination of renown itself, is actually quite a young place. It was founded and built up by John D’Arcy, master of Clifden Castle, barely 200 years ago. That doesn’t take away from the feeling that you’ve found

Drive 8 May 2015
Hi ho Silver!
By Seán Creedon
L
ast week I had my first ever encounter with the Great Wall. No, I’m not just back from a trip to China, but I did drive the Steed, the first pick–up truck the Chinese company is offering for sale in Ireland. Subaru, who have some powerful motors of their own, are the Irish agents for Great Wall. I showed the pick–up to a friend and he said it reminded him of a pick up that James Gandolfini drove when play-
ing Tony Soprano. I turned to our old friend Google and it told me that the white pick– up that Tony drove was a 2011 Cadillac Escalade, Platinum Edition. For all Sopranos fans out there, it now looks like the truck that Tony drove is on sale on eBay. I suppose it was too much to expect that Tony Soprano would be driving anything other than an all– American product. This is a massive pick–up. We grew up seeing them in films where a farmer in the US drives to a small town to do some grocery shop-
ping. Heavy duty items are placed in the cargo area, but Great Wall know that the Irish weather is not reliable enough, so they have covered over the cargo area. The interior is pretty basic, but very functional. You get heated leather seats and information on temperature, mileage and so on on the rear–view mirror. There’s no reversing camera, but there are sensors. Overall, the interior is much the same as other big pick up. I remember one of the Ssangyong trucks I drove recently had a wire mesh which rattled and
reminded me of a ‘Black Maria’, but the Steed had sliding glass, similar to a London Black Taxi. It got a bit fogged up in the mornings and you do need to get into the boot to clean the glass. You can open the top half of the cargo area with a handle, but you need to be careful when leaving down the rear door as it’s fairly heavy. Last week I didn’t need to go half way up a mountain to check on sheep or bring up bales of hay, but I can see how the Steed would be attractive for farmers or small builders. Indeed it’s so powerful
and rugged you could nearly tackle a trip to see the parts of the Great Wall which have fallen into disrepair. This pick up, which has a logo somewhat similar to Lexus, wouldn’t strike you as being very Chinese. In fact the only hint that that it comes from China is some Chinese writing on the inside of fuel cap. I enjoyed my time in the Steed and, while the views are spectacular from the high driving position, I think this is essentially a pick up to go off–road in. It’s probably more west Cork than east
Cork. I’m no brave knight, but I enjoyed this noble steed. Prices start at €23,666 excluding VAT. But if you want to the cargo area covered it will cost you another 3k for the SE version. You get a six– year guarantee. Great Wall has over 600 dealers in 100 countries, but so far only eight dealers in Ireland. However, they are gradually increasing their network of dealers here. In Cork you can check out the powerful Steed courtesy of Denis and Mary Ryan, Ardrostig, Bishopstown.

Up! Up! And away!
S
tylishly Spartan on the inside, pleasingly minimalist on the outside, Volkswagen’s nippy, oh–so–fun Up! (don’t forget the exclamation mark, it’s a vital part of its personality) is a little dune buggy of a car; brilliant to drive, a joy to manoeuvre and more adept at city life than any of the cast of Friends could ever have hoped to be. A few weeks ago I had a great time driving the FIAT Cinquecento around Cork, and I was impressed by just how enormous it is on the inside compared to its diminutive exterior, but the Up! takes space to a whole new final frontier and feels even

larger than its big brother the Polo. The enormous cabin means a slightly bigger body than the FIAT or its ilk, but the difference on the outside is fractional and that little bit of extra volume gave Volkswagen more real estate to share between the tyres. This has the net effect of making the Up! steer a little like a dodgems cart: super
responsive, brilliantly fun, and as agile as Spider–Man. Allied with a zippy, enthusiastic 1.0l engine which adores performing near the top of its range, this all adds up to a driving experience you don’t get too much of with modern cars anymore: no bells, no whistles, no blatant fancy schmancy doojimahickers and no barrier between you and Cork’s city streets. If I had to compare this great little car to an animal, it’d be a kitten: sure footed, agile, fast, playful and built for fun — but with a little bit of bite. None of that, however, comes at the expense of safety or security. This car only feels like it’s not swaddling you in a cocoon of modern wonder-
ment, and it’s earned every one of its five+ NCAP stars. The genius part is that you never notice. That “grab it by the scruff of the neck” illusion makes the Up! one of the most alive modern cars I’ve driven in years. Thankfully I didn’t have to rely on the city brake as-
Ex Astra lux Love it or loathe it, or feel sort of “meh” towards it, there’s no denying that the Opel Astra has been one of the mainstays of Irish motoring for generations. The German company, which was founded in 1899 and is now a part of General Motors, has been turning out what it calls its “compact car” for 10 generations now — beginning as the Kadett in 1937 before becoming the Astra in the 1990s. This week, Opel announced the 11th generation, which it says will feature “stunning” design, superb efficiency and the most advanced safety features money can buy. The new version will be smaller on the outside and bigger on the in-

It will also feature an ‘intelligent uplink’ to Opel’s servers, meaning it’ll spend most of its life online and engineers in Germany will be notified in the event of a breakdown or technical fault. Meanwhile, Opel celebrated the construction of its 500 millionth car this week. Up! is a good example of just why Volkswagen has nudged Ford from its top spot in Cork. It’s got that great mix of quality, fun, safety and good humour that’s everything you want from a city car. Don’t believe me? Pop in to Blackwater Motors and find out for yourself!
Mazda’s new MX is a cracker With its tiny 1.5l engine firing out 131 horsepower and two levels of trim — 1.5G and Roadster GT — on offer, the new Mazda MX is shaping up to be every bit as sporty and desirable as its venerable ancestors. Orders are now being taken for one of the archetypal ‘small racers’, which will go on sale officially here in Cork at the end of the summer. Both models will cost less than €30,000 ex works and, if earlier versions
are anything to go by, will offer blistering pace, excellent cornering and fun, fun, fun. Remodelled, but still bearing that classic Mazda ‘face’, the newest member of the family has a more aggressive grille, surrounded by four banks of LED lights. Alloy wheels and a six–speed gearbox will also come as standard. You can pre–order now at O’Briens in Midleton and Lucey’s in Charleville.

Queue for the Q Audi has just announced that their brand spanking new Q7 will hit the Cork market in July, just in time to be among the first of the ‘152 C’ generation of cars. Vehicles as big as as the ‘Q’ line suffered a more significant setback than smaller, cheaper cars during the slump in car sales which followed the death of the Celtic Tiger, but appear to be roaring back with a vengeance: the cheapest Q7 option — the 3.0 TDI 218 Quattro SE — will still set you back the princely sum of
about €73,000 and Audi anticipates good sales here. The newest Q will be over 300kg lighter than its predecessor, and more than 25% more fuel efficient. Folding down the two back rows of the seven seater will grant you an echoic 1,955 litres of free space, and of course the car will be fully connected, providing its own 100Mbps WiFi for passengers. If you’re interested in this new beast, contact Audi Cork at Bandon Road Roundabout for a preview.
Tyred and worn out? Peugeot 208 sets record It’s international road safety week and as the roads warm up at long last, and people start to make summer road– trip plans, it’s well worth taking a close look at your connection to the tarmac, as it is at every change of the seasons. Winter tyres are rare enough in Ireland, but some people do use them. If you’re one of them, you’d best make sure they’ve been replaced by summer or at the very least
all–season tyres by now. At temperatures over 7ºC they’re unsafe, and can lead to an increased risk of losing control as well as higher fuel consumption. As always, check your tread for depth and the walls of your tyres for cracks and bulges. Winter is tough on rubber, and a little time spent ensuring that your tyres are fit for purpose could save you time and money — and in-
deed save your life — in the long run. Your tyres are what hold you to the road. You can do without that pair of shoes for another week or two, or that new games console, or that fancy crockery. When it comes to gambling with your tyres, you might be gambling with your life and the lives of others so don’t put it off a second longer and replace them if necessary.
A standard 1.6-litre BlueHDi 100bhp Stop–Start Peugeot 208 has set a new long–distance fuel consumption record at a test circuit in France. 43 litres of diesel saw the bog–standard, off–the–shelf 208 cover a phenomenal 2,152 kilometres (nearly 1,340 miles in old money), meaning its average fuel consumption worked out to 2.0 l/100km. That’s 141.2 miles per gallon.
That means that the new 208, due for launch in Ireland this July, now takes its place as the world benchmark for a standard production model powered by an internal combustion engine, thanks in no small part to the Euro6 BlueHDi Diesel engine at its heart and, it has to be said, sensible driving, good tyres and good road conditions.

Cork triathlete in Olympic bid Cork triathlete Bryan Keane is hoping to build on a solid 27th placing in last month’s Gold Coast World Triathlon Series when he competes in China’s Chengdu World Cup Triathlon. Keane currently ranks inside
the world’s top 50 triathletes, and goes into the Saturday, May 9th event knowing another strong performance will go some way to securing his place at Rio 2016. “I’m getting excited to race
again as my form is improving and with that I hope for a more complete performance in Chengdu. “I need two big results and this is one I’m targeting,” said Keane.
Geary leaves the field Anna Geary, a four–time All– Star and All–Ireland winner, Captain and 12–year veteran at the age of just 27, has announced her retirement from the Cork camogie side. The Milford woman’s announcement comes just after the Cork’s national league final loss to Galway, a match Geary was forced to sit out with a shin injury. Having worked as an analyst with Dell, the wing–back has decided to embark on a change of careers and will return to college to study for a Business and Life Coaching diploma. “It is never a good time to leave something you love, especially as it has been a focal part of my life for over a decade. But I am changing careers so I need to focus on that at the moment,” she said, adding that she will continue to line out for her club.

I played against him for Ireland a couple of years ago and watching him up close he’s an impressive operator. It’s another big challenge and one that I’m looking forward to,” he said. Kick off in Belfast is at 2.40pm, with Munster knowing that a win may secure a home semi–final in the Guinness Pro12.

Pierced to the core A giant of a scene he now looks back on with scorn, punk legend Pierce Turner — a classical musican, a traditional musician and a composer — reminisces with Eoghan McNeill ahead of a gig in Cork.
H
e’s a former showband member who was banned from the epicentre of New York’s 1970s punk scene for being “too demonic.” He’s “Ireland’s greatest living poet,” according to Hot Press, but says he “honestly, never read a lot; wasn’t that interested in words.” He’s a classically trained musician, who in 1981 contributed one of the earliest recorded rapped verses to US radio with the hit Avenue B is the Place to Be. Pierce Turner is a man of contradictions, and he plays Coughlans tonight, Friday, March 8th, having travelled to Wexford from his New York base of the last 40 years. “Honestly, there wasn’t too much intelligence behind the move to New York. When you’re young, you want to move away from yourself. I had an idea I could be someone else in New York. I felt constricted in Ireland,” he says. Having made his first musical pay cheque with showband The Arrows, Pierce says that as a teenager he thought The Big Apple would provide a stage for the first songs he had written: “In Ireland, people thought songs and books were things that were written in the UK or the States. I thought that there would be this great curiosity for original material in New York,” he says. He soon found American audiences to be no more curious than their Irish counter-
parts however, and made a living playing Irish folk songs: “The Merry Plough Boy, The Butcher Boy, The Colonial Boy – any song with a ‘boy’ in it,” he says. Things changed when he moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan, forming punk act The Major Thinkers and getting on the bill at CBGB, a former biker bar that hosted early Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads gigs. “We got into trouble for being too demonic,” says Pierce, explaining that The Major Thinkers soon found themselves barred from the venue: “I don’t know why. We weren’t ‘demonic’. It shows what a load of bullshit that scene was,” he adds. The venue has since acquired legendary status and is credited as a catalyst for the American punk scene, but Turner is dismissive of its influence — and a lot of the musicians who performed there. “I mean, The Ramones weren’t great. They just looked and sounded like a heavy metal band from Queens. I love history, and now when I’m reading about some ‘great historical era’ like the 1800s, I wonder whether it’s being overrated, too,” he tells me. The Major Thinkers split in 1985, with Pierce “shedding his punk skin,” and recording It’s Only a Long Way Across with Golden Globe–winning composer Philip Glass, one of the leaders of the late 20th century’s Minimalist movement and beloved of musicologists, on production duties. “Punk was good at getting
all the angst out of me. When I went solo, I could go back to my childhood, and the wonderful melodies of Seán O’Riada and plainchant,” he says. Included on the record is Wicklow Hills, a song about being “worn out by urban living” that was named one of the top 25 Irish songs of all time by Today FM: “I wrote it after breaking up with the band. I was devastated. I actually had an anxiety attack in the street,” he says. The song was covered by Christy Moore, and while Pierce says he appreciates the tribute, Christy’s decision to change the words to make the song more uplifting was “upsetting”: “It destroys the meaning. I’m not attacking Christy; it
“Punk was good at getting all the angst out.”
just upsets me when I hear people in bars singing that version. “I worry that the song may go down forever with that meaning,” he says.
In 2002, one of Pierce’s covers — Dirty Old Town — was used to soundtrack a first series episode of seminal HBO show The Wire. Thirteen years later, he still isn’t sure how the opportunity came about: “I had a residency in Manhattan with a string quartet. You would never know who was going to come in. Jim Sheridan used to come in, so I think he might have met some Wire people. “That was a real important payday for me. It kept me alive for a year,” he says. Throughout his career, both Irish and international critics have lauded Pierce’s work, and he counts Brad Pitt among his celebrity fans. Although his record sales place him in the ‘cult artist’
bracket, Pierce says he has “no qualms” about the gap between critical and commercial acclaim: “I don’t have any kind of pension scheme, much to the horror of my family here in Wexford. They’re shocked that I haven’t squirreled anything away. “I believe that the present is the most important, though. I don’t think about the past or the future,” he says. Pierce Turner talks about his memoir Why Use 2 Words When 10 Will Do Perfectly Well, and new album The Butterfly Effect on RTÉ’s John Murray show on Monday, May 11th, and he plays Coughlans at 9.30pm, tonight, Friday, May 8th. Bold as Brass Bold as Brass, a production featuring 100 musicians playing the powerful sounds of brass, saxophone and percussion, is to be staged as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival on Sunday, June 21st. Presented by Music Generation Cork City (MGCC), UK sax player and composer Jason Yarde will lead the production’s ensemble of brass players. “This is a first for Cork City, facilitating different generations of brass players together in a new piece that draws on world brass traditions from military to folk to carnival,” said Margaret O’Sullivan of MGCC. Bold as Brass will run at 4.30pm, 6pm and 8pm at Elizabeth Fort, Barrack Street.

banjo and the award–winning mandolin playing of his 18–year–old son Tristan, will be joined on the night by The Petersen Family Bluegrass Band from Missouri. Ellen Petersen, vocalist with
the latter act, made her mark on major US talent show American Idol last month. Tickets for the 8pm show are €20 from ballymaloegrainstore.com or by calling 021 463 1555.
Silence for Amnesty Cork musician Jack O’Rourke’s haunting Silence has been taken on board by Amnesty International in their campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote on May 22nd. O’Rourke had set the song aside for inclusion on his EP The Other Side of Now, due for release in June. However, the upcoming referendum inspired him to release it earlier. “Silence is about my own struggle to reach self–acceptance. To the boy that I was,
Jack O’Rourke.
being free to live and love openly felt like an impossible dream,” he says. “Ireland has a chance to take a huge step forward on the 22nd of May, to make it clear that we believe in equality. The fact that my country men and women will hopefully decide that I should be free to marry the person that I love is a huge deal; it would have seemed impossible to the boy in the song. Underneath all those minor chords, the man can now dream.”
