Welcome to our April edition of the EIC Newspaper. EIC organises 160 events around the world each year, and this time of year is always very busy for the EIC events teams, as you’ll read, with reviews of some of our major events in February in Kuching, Dammam and London.
Stuart Broadley EIC CEO
The team successfully delivered EIC’s inaugural Bankable Energies event in London on February 26-27, bringing together industry leaders, financial experts, and policymakers to explore ways to de-risk investments and enable bankable solutions. The event focused
on increasing the number of low-carbon and renewable energy projects reaching final investment decision (FID).
A key highlight was the welcome drinks reception at the Cinnamon Club in Westminster, where EIC’s president, Campbell Keir, launched the Net Zero Jeopardy report. He addressed challenges such as policy uncertainty, slow approvals, and weak investment, which continue to delay projects.
The conference featured a keynote session with Joanna Drake, Deputy Director-General

of the European Commission, who discussed the EU’s role in the energy transition and funding opportunities through Horizon Europe for UK research centers and companies.
Premium pass holders engaged in closeddoor roundtables on UK-EU alignment, balancing local and Chinese supply chains, and advancing investment timelines for nuclear and SMRs. Insights from these discussions will shape EIC’s upcoming white paper.

At the end of January, the EIC travelled to Paris to host the UK Pavilion at Hyvolution 2025 for the first time, in partnership with Department for Business & Trade, Hydrogen Energy Association and Scottish Development International. 20 companies exhibited as part of the UK Pavilion showcasing the best of the UK Supply Chain to the French and European market, with exhibitors providing solutions, innovations and technical knowledge to the hydrogen industry. Hyvolution is now a firm Hydrogen event in the International Trade Team’s calendar, and we look forward to returning for the 2026 edition!
À très bientôt Paris!
In February, senior EIC representatives from across the business converged in London for the 9th annual Global Membership Meeting: looking for ways to improve, aligning on priorities and our #teamEIC culture, and refining our strategy and future direction.
We agreed our vision has three key principles: 1. To be the voice of the energy supply chain globally. 2. To put members first, maximising member benefits. 3. To put our people first, making EIC the best place to work.
We also promised each other to minimise starting too many new projects. Instead, we will maximise finishing all the important strategic projects that we started in the last three years.

EIC Net Zero Jeopardy II
A Wake-up Call for the Energy Transition
The second edition of EIC’s Net Zero Jeopardy Report was published in February 2025. Written by EIC’s Mahmoud Habboush, it paints a worrying picture—energy industry supply chain leaders’ faith in hitting global net-zero goals is crumbling. Just 16% of energy leaders now think the 2050 climate target is doable, down from nearly half who believed it last year. Shorter- term goals look even tougher, with a measly 5% confident the world will hit 2030 milestones. While 59% still think their own countries can make the 2050 deadline, even that number has dropped from 66% in 2024. What’s going wrong? The report talks about wishy- washy government policies, financial and economic obstacles, and a potential supply chain crunch if planned projects actually go ahead. It also points to massive clean energy project delays due to failing policies and lack of commercial viability.
New EIC Freshers Programme
by Shirley George, Aishah Azmi & Laura Rasma
The brand-new Freshers Programme at EIC is an internal initiative designed to support recent graduates as they embark on their professional careers within EIC. This initiative provides a structured, supportive environment to help employees build confidence, develop their skills, and integrate into their roles.
The programme combines comprehensive modules with hands-on, on-the-job training, allowing participants to gain practical experience while deepening their understanding of their work and the energy industry at large. In addition to modules and training, the programme provides personalised coaching and mentoring. Each graduate is paired with a mentor who offers guidance and support, helping them grow in their career and build confidence in their new role.
Ryan McPherson, EIC Regional Director, interviewed on national TV
Ryan McPherson joined Dubai Eye 103.8 on behalf of EIC to discuss key energy challenges and opportunities. He explained that, while the industry remains committed to net zero, confidence is declining due to unclear project pipelines and unstable financing. EIC’s Net Zero Jeopardy Report II reveals only 16% of energy executives believe the 2050 target is achievable, down from 45% last year. The discussion highlighted the need for clearer strategies to maintain momentum. Well done, Ryan!
Rebecca Groundwater, Head of External Affairs, representing EIC on the Scottish Affairs Committee
Rebecca appeared recently for a hearing with the Scottish Affairs Committee in the House of Commons to discuss GB Energy and the net-zero transition. Scotland’s energy
supply chain is rooted in oil and gas, yet this industry is also funding the transition. About 85% of offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture companies have oil
and gas backgrounds. These companies operate across multiple sectors, but funding for new tech is inconsistent, forcing them to rely on oil and gas revenues. Without
a clear financing strategy, many seek opportunities abroad. Policy discussions remain fragmented, though companies juggle multiple technologies. At EIC’s
Bankable Energies conference, industry leaders agreed: to reach net zero, we need faster action, stable funding, and a strategy that supports the whole supply chain.

SupplyMap News
with Kevin Pedrosa, Senior Supply Chain Analyst
Being the heart of the European Union and the most industrialised country in the region, Germany was chosen as the first market in continental Europe to have its energy supply chain mapped on EICSupplyMap. Data of more than 6,000 companies was gathered and analysed throughout 2024, with 1,200 suppliers qualifying to be included in SupplyMap. The German supply chain is more equally diversified than many other countries. For example, renewables and oil and gas both having approximately 60% market presence, whereas the UK is less balanced, with 40% British supply chain in renewables but 82% in oil and gas, making rapid transition much harder.
In January, 300 newly operational assets were added to the database.
EICAssetMap now tracks a total of 48,200 assets globally. This includes 41.5GW of Offshore Wind, 285GW of Solar, 15,000 Oil and Gas Fields and more than 1800 Energy Transition Facilities- including Hydrogen, Carbon Capture and Energy Storage.
We announce with great sadness that our former CEO, Dai Somerville-Jones, died recently.
Dai Somerville-Jones was first appointed EIC CEO at the end of 1991. Membership numbers had fallen in the late 1980s/early 1990s to their lowest levels since the trade
Since September last year, the team has produced several regional reports, including the Middle East, South America, Asia and most recently in January, Africa. We have a North America Insight Report which came out at the end of March and an Europe report coming out in May.
I will be presenting at a webinar on Thursday 27th March, Unlocking the Power of AssetMap and SupplyMap, which I will provide attendees with further insight. Will you be attending?

association came into existence 50 years earlier, driven by low oil prices and global recession. Dai had to do something quickly to grow membership and turn fortunes around.
Although the EIC was very active with events, taking stands for the first time at OTC in Houston and ONS in Stavanger in 1994, indeed sponsoring 26 events in 19 countries, EIC was languishing financially. Dai was instrumental in turning this difficult situation into a subsequent period of strong growth.
1998 saw the Board approve EIC’s first website and Dai launched his new strategy
called Vision 99, with the slogan ‘Energizing Your Business’, to provide a unique global service. Vision 99 laid out a series of bold ideas – to open new overseas offices in Singapore, UAE and Brazil. This was after the successful opening of EIC’s first international office in Houston in 1995.
By 2001, there were 1,800 projects on the EIC online database, which was to develop ultimately into what is now EIC’s ‘crown jewels’, the projects database EICDataStream. Dai retired from EIC in 2004, after 13 years of very dynamic and transformative leadership as our CEO.
