The EIC Chief Executive
A word from the CEO I’d like to wish all of our members a very Happy New Year. When it comes to business, for many of us the start of the year can incite expectation and a degree of trepidation. However, it also draws on our optimism and resolve, to weather whatever comes our way. I think we would all agree that 2015 was testing and 2016 is unlikely to be any less challenging. However, the wheels are still very much in motion: there is a range of projects happening now and others set to be given the green light soon. So this is an opportune time to really make the most of your EIC membership and exploit the benefits it brings. Getting out to new and familiar markets remains one of the best ways to make contacts and win new contracts. This year we’ll take up our familiar positions and continue to create a buzz at major markets including OTC (sold out) and ADIPEC. We will also be exhibiting in UK pavilions at ONS in Norway, Rio Oil & Gas and the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, which together are expected to attract almost 150,000 visitors. Our EIC Connect Middle East event, which we usually run bi-annually, was so successful last year that we are hosting it again in 2016. What’s more, I’m delighted to announce that ADNOC, one of the world’s leading oil companies, will once again be supporting it with speakers and encouraging operating companies to participate. EIC Connect Middle East is an ideal forum for exchanging knowledge and ideas, as well as creating links between suppliers and service providers. www.the-eic.com
EIC members who have been part of our organised delegations will appreciate how useful they are in developing export opportunities and local relationships. Throughout 2016, we are planning delegations to several different regions, including Columbia, Nigeria, and Oman and UAE to name a few. Between them, these three regions alone have more than 200 active and 100 future projects. And in total, we are tracking, and updating daily, just over 8,600 projects around the world via EICDataStream. In terms of world issues, we all know that climate change is one of the most significant – and responsibility for it rests on numerous shoulders. Given this, the historic commitment by almost 200 nations at last month’s UN climate change conference was extremely welcome news. There was agreement by everyone to hold the increase in the global average temperature to “well below 2ºC above pre-industrial levels”, and to endeavour to “limit the temperature increase to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels”. Our article opposite has further details on the decision and what this could mean in the future. The future is never certain, but this year takes us one step closer to a gradual improvement in the oil price, developments in other energy sectors and a growth in new business opportunities. I hope that January will be a productive month for you. Claire Miller, Chief Executive

Sector Analysis
COP21: What does it mean for the global renewable energy industry? The COP21 United Nations climate change conference concluded on 12 December 2015 with an agreement by 195 nations to aim to limit global temperature warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius and strive for a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Hailed as a great diplomatic accomplishment, the commitment has significant implications for the global renewable energy industry. Coming into force in 2020, the part legally binding Paris Agreement will accelerate the deployment of renewables, inspire long-term investor confidence and help stimulate technological innovation. As a result, the costs of developing and constructing renewable energy projects are expected to fall on a global scale in the years ahead. The framework for COP21 was built by 188 countries voluntarily submitting ‘intended nationally determined contributions’, or INDCs, to the United Nations. This new, bottom-up approach where each country outlines how greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced has seen ambitious proposals put forward by developing countries. In Africa, for example, Sudan has pledged to generate 20% of its power mix from renewable sources by 2030, while Guinea-Bissau aims to generate 80% of its energy from renewables by the same year. From 2018 onwards, the commitments made through INDCs will be independently reviewed every five years with a view to increase their level of ambition. This ‘review and ratchet’ mechanism will help to drive investment in renewable energy, increase the attractiveness of emerging markets and open up new markets for export opportunity. Building on the momentum generated by INDCs, COP21 saw new initiatives launched including the Africa Renewable Energy www.the-eic.com
Initiative, or AREI, which aims to speed up the installation of renewable energy projects across Africa. With a target to deploy 10GW of additional renewable energy capacity by 2020 and an acceptance that the continent has the potential to generate 300GW from renewables by 2030, the initiative is expected to leverage private investment and accelerate the use of solar and onshore wind energy. The importance of harnessing solar energy was acknowledged on the opening day of COP21 with India and France introducing an International Solar Alliance to promote solar energy generation in developing countries. Made up of 120 nations, the alliance intends to encourage co-operation among countries blessed with an abundance of solar resources to enable cost reduction and mass deployment. According to the declaration, the alliance will aim to “mobilise more than US$1,000 billion of investments that are needed by 2030,” giving a clear signal to companies to scale-up and invest. Government ministers and business leaders suggest that the Paris Agreement will assist in quickening a shift that is already occurring. In more economically developed countries, cities such as Sydney, San Francisco and Vancouver have committed to generating 100% renewable electricity, while influential companies continue to join RE100. Launched in 2014, this initiative represents businesses that are committed to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewable energy. With members including Google, Goldman Sachs and Walmart, RE100 highlights how companies are reforming their business models around a low carbon agenda. Enhancing green credentials also makes economic sense. In December 2014 E.ON, for example,

announced that, due to shifting global markets, it would be splitting the company to give focus to renewable energy and energy efficiency. In the future, more European energy companies are expected to switch to cleaner forms of energy generation and, in the UK, oil and gas supply chain companies are starting to look beyond the sector to the opportunities offered by offshore wind. It is, however, not just in developed countries where changes can be observed. Pre-COP21 analysis by Ernst Young revealed that India is currently the third most attractive market for renewables globally as the government is successfully galvanising public and private investment. Keen to boost domestic manufacturing and supply chain capabilities, India’s INDC has pledged to adopt a ‘peak, plateau and decline’ approach to lowering its emissions, while installing 100GW of solar capacity and 60GW of wind capacity by 2022. Emerging renewable energy markets on the Indian Subcontinent, in SubSaharan Africa and Latin America have a clear sense of direction and offer rich investor opportunity. COP21 has provided an agreement that now needs to be implemented. In the days following the news that a deal had been reached Reuters announced that renewable energy stocks had rallied in Europe, with shares in wind turbine manufacturers including Gamesa, Nordex and Vestas rising by up to 5%. As the dust continues to settle, it remains to be seen whether the two week conference is a tipping point in the transition to a low carbon future. What it has demonstrated, however, is that the political will to decarbonise the global economy has never been stronger. Nylacast
Held at the Hurlingham Club in London, the judging panel, made up of engineers, was looking for products which exploited material properties in order to solve industry challenges in engineering projects including oil and gas. The judges commented: “Nylacast’s Pipe-in-Pipe Spacer was the stand out winner because it clearly met and solved real world application demands. The system uses the company’s custom polymers, with low friction on one surface and a patented ferrous metal underside where high grip was required. This application demonstrated a real understanding of an industry challenge faced in the oil and gas sector.” The unique product utilises a combination of materials derived from in depth understanding and knowledge of material science. The use of a ferrous and non-ferrous material within one application works to eliminate the disadvantages and weaknesses each material may have, with a polymer excelling where a metal will not and vice versa. The advantages delivered through this engineering solution lead to faster installations, better performance and improved costs. Junaid Makda, Marketing Manager, Nylacast, said: “As a company focused on using material and engineering knowledge to meet challenging industry requirements, winning this BEEA back to back strengthens our grounding in the engineering arena as a value adding technology partner to our extensive range of clients.” For more information please visit: www.nylacast.com

EIC Overseas Exhibitions and Delegations
Overseas Exhibitions EIC Overseas Exhibitions and Delegations Overseas Delegation to Egypt 31 January-4 February 2016 #EICEGYPT16 The EIC in partnership with UKTI is organising an oil and gas overseas trade delegation to Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt. With proven oil reserves of 4.4 billion barrels and proven gas reserves of 77 trillion cubic feet, Egypt is the largest nonOPEC oil producer and the second-largest dry natural gas producer in Africa. As production has stagnated over the last few years and consumption has increased rapidly, the formerly hydrocarbon exporting country has to advance oil and gas developments in order to meet domestic market growth.
Turkey, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan together with ‘best in class’ British expertise in the areas of exploration, reservoir, well and drilling management, field integrity and asset management, gas utilisation and finance/ commercial/project management to discuss current/ future development plans and opportunities. For more information or to book contact: mark.gamble@the-eic.com Overseas Delegation to Algeria 6-10 March 2016 #EICALG16 The EIC is organising an oil and gas trade delegation to Algeria. Delegations are an excellent introduction to a new market in a supportive environment and the perfect way to strengthen existing business relationships. Delegates will have the opportunity to attend group meetings with key local players as well as briefing meetings from qualified speakers with in-market experience and the opportunity to meet with local companies.
Upstream developments like the West Mediterranean Deep Water and North Alexandria concessions, which hold estimated reserves of 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and 55 million barrels of condensates, have recently seen major EPC contract awards and several downstream projects are currently underway. Also, conventional power generation as well as renewable energy schemes are proposed in order to cope with rising demand. Now is the time to engage in this market and establish client relationships. To secure your place on the delegation submit the application form to: amy.ford@the-eic.com
Algeria is the largest natural gas producer in Africa, and is among the top three oil producers within the continent. The industry is dominated by Sonatrach who are proposing to make investments of approximately £90 billion between 2015 and 2019. For more information please contact: amy.ford@the-eic.com
Overseas Delegation to South Korea 22-26 February 2016 #EICSK16 South Korea was the world’s ninth largest energy consumer in 2014, according to estimates from the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2015. Korea is one of the top energy importers in the world and relies on fuel imports for about 97% of its primary energy consumption because the country lacks domestic energy reserves.
Overseas Delegation to Nigeria 4-7 April 2016 #EICNIGERIA16 The EIC is organising an oil and gas trade delegation to Lagos in Nigeria from 4-7 April 2016. With proven reserves of 37 billion barrels of crude oil and 180 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, Nigeria holds Africa’s second-largest and largest reserves of crude oil and natural gas respectively. After reaching its peak production of 2.44 million barrels per day in 2005, production started to decline amid rising security issues, pipeline vandalism and oil theft. As the situation improved the production rate was back at 2.4 million barrels per day in 2014.
South Korea ranks among the world’s top five importers of liquefied natural gas, coal, crude oil, and refined products. Despite its lack of domestic energy resources, South Korea is home to some of the largest and most advanced oil refineries in the world. The increased sophistication of the South Korean refining market is likely to increase capacity utilisation, which is already high for some refineries. As a result, South Korea is expected to remain a leading refiner in Asia, with significant exports to China, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia. For more information please contact: amy.ford@the-eic.com
According to EICDataStream, projects worth a combined US$229.3 billion across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry are currently under development or have entered planning. The most valuable assets of the OPEC member country can be found in the Niger River Delta as well as offshore in the Bight of Benin, the Gulf of Guinea and the Bight of Bonny. Despite the unfortunate current oil price environment, proven reserves as well as ageing equipment and infrastructure offer promising opportunities for the UK supply chain. If you would like to exploit the tremendous opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry this is the chance to engage in the market and establish client relationships. If you have any questions please contact: mark.gamble@the-eic.com
Overseas Delegation to Turkey 29 February-3 March 2016 #EICTURKEY16 Situated between the Middle East and the Caspian Region to the east, with over 75% of global oil and gas reserves, Turkey plays a crucial role in linking supply and demand. The delegation coincides with the GREAT Summit organised by UKTI which aims to bring the NOCs of www.the-eic.com

2016 could well be a particularly significant year given the current state of flux in the global oil and gas market.
Liquidated Damages – Everything you need to know Wednesday 20 January 2016 Four Points by Sheraton, Dubai
We know that the current low prices are a result of oversupply rather than any significant decrease in demand. Demand could increase over the coming six to eight months, which would strengthen prices. However, this might also be tempered by how the US shale players find themselves given the continuing depressed prices, the re-emergence of Iran and any positive outcome from ongoing negotiations in trouble spots across the region, especially in Libya.
Business Presentation Opportunities with SBM Offshore Tuesday 26 January 2016 Dusit Thani Hotel, Dubai Corporate Entertainment EIC Middle East Golf Tournament 2016 Thursday 18 February 2016 The Els Club, Dubai
Closer to home, we start our programme of events with our hosting of SBM Offshore, the specialist FPSO provider. While they have had some negative press, we expect their presentation to be a positive one that concentrates on their successes as well as opportunities across the Middle East and especially Africa.
To register your interest or to book on the above courses please go to www.the-eic.com/Training or contact Helen Aittis: helen.aittis@the-eic.com
We will also be hosting our annual Golf Tournament. Despite not having a headline tournament sponsor we expect to have another great day. All the golfing places have been taken up and there will be a number of prizes to play for. So we are confident that the sixth edition of this successful event will be equally as exciting as the last five.

Schlumberger bids low for Jurassic gas project Schlumberger has submitted the lowest bid for package one, two and three of the Jurassic gas development phase two in Kuwait. The project, estimated at US$4.3bn, covers construction of facilities as well as five-year operation and maintenance at the West Raudhatain, East Raudhatain, Umm Niqa and Sabriya fields. Schlumberger submitted bids at US$1.38bn for the West Raudhatain and East Raudhatain packages and US$1.56bn for the Umm Niqa and Sabriya package respectively. Bids submitted by Spetco International Petroleum Company and Al-Khorayef Group came in higher.
Another event taking place in January in Abu Dhabi is the World Future Energy Summit. This annual gathering of the world’s finest players within the renewable and clean energy space promises to be particularly exciting. The world’s energy providers are seriously looking at renewables to make up a larger slice of their energy mix, despite the current depressed hydrocarbon prices.
Doosan to supply Salalah 2 IPP Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company has been awarded a contract by Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation 3 (SEPCO 3) to supply steam turbines and generators for the Salalah 2 independent power project in Oman. The power plant is being developed by a joint venture of ACWA Power and Mitsui while SEPCO 3 is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction contract. The 450MW plant is scheduled to come online in early 2018.
More and more governments are now re-examining their energy policies as a result of a much improved offering from clean energy providers. A case in point is the low take off tariff offered to DEWA by ACWA Power, while negotiating the second phase of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park, something that would have been unrealistic just 12 months ago. As a consequence, we can be sure that there will be some very positive outcomes from this global event. As always, we would welcome any feedback or input on our training programme. This month, we have a few new additions, one covering liquidated damages and the other concerning contractual terms and conditions that are relevant to Iraq, a market that continues to grow in prominence for members. We also deliver courses inhouse, so if there are any requirements for us to arrange specifically designed courses for you and your team, please contact us. Business Presentation Opportunities with Muhibbah Engineering Tuesday 19 January 2016 EIC Kuala Lumpur
Office News
In November we organised a business presentation in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia, two and a half hours by air from Kuala Lumpur. Sabah is a semi-autonomous state within Malaysia with its own independent government and agencies. It has more than a 30% share of oil and gas production in Malaysia and has the majority of offshore deep water fields such as the Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai fields. Sabah State is keen to increase its participation in the oil and gas industry, so it is looking for international oil and gas companies to assist Sabahan companies with technology and capability.

Oil and Gas Australia Jemena wins bid to build US$570m gas pipeline Australia’s Northern Territory government has awarded Jemena, a company owned by State Grid Corp of China and Singapore Power, is to build an A$800 million (US$570 million) pipeline to the country’s east coast gas markets. Other companies in the bid are APA Group, DUET Group, and a Chinese consortium PCP Australia, which includes China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The 622 kilometre pipeline will run between Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory and Mount Isa in Queensland.
The business presentation was organised jointly with the Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) of Sabah and EIC Asia Pacific. Petronas Sabah and other production sharing companies also took part as speakers. During the event Petronas made the announcement that more than 70 categories within the Petronas Vendors Registration are reserved for Sabahan companies, and it is essential for UK companies to partner with local companies for these categories. To date, at least two member companies with offices in Kuala Lumpur have entered agreements/Memorandum of Understanding with Sabahan companies. Following the success of this event, the EIC will be hosting a similar presentation this year.
China China books marginal growth China’s oil and gas production registered marginal growth in October 2015, reflecting slow economic activity that has seriously dampened energy demand in the country. In October, China produced 18.1 million tonnes of crude oil, rising 0.2% year-on-year, bringing total production in the first 10 months to 178.9 million tonnes, up 2.3% from 2014. Gas production fared slightly better, with output in October rising 1.4% to 10.4 billion cubic metres, while gas output in the first 10 months increased 2.7% year-on-year to 103.5 billion cubic metres. The Chinese economy has been under structural reform, which calls for replacing energy-intensive facilities with more sophisticated and energy-efficient utilities. The ongoing reform has significantly cut the demand for oil and gas.
We visited the PetroVietnam Oil and Gas Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and made contact with PetroVietnam officials and also met with UKTI Vietnam. Vietnam, along with Malaysia, Indonesia, China and India, is one of the top targets for oil and gas opportunities in the Asia Pacific region and is showing a good deal of potential as it outgrows its more illustrious neighbours such as Malaysia and Thailand.
Power, Nuclear and Renewables China China’s non-hydro capacity to triple by 2025 Cumulative installed capacity for renewables, excluding hydropower, in China will more than triple from 196.3GW in 2015 to an estimated 608.9GW by 2025, representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 12%, driven primarily by ambitious government targets for onshore wind, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData. It is understood that China’s National Energy Administration is targeting 150GW of wind capacity by 2017, which will increase to 200GW, 400GW, and 1,000GW by 2020, 2030 and 2050 respectively.
In 2014 Vietnam grew 6% year on year, with economists attributing the strong growth to exports as compared to 5.4% in 2013. It recorded the highest amount of foreign direct investment among the Asean-5 in the last 24 months and its GDP grew faster at 6.3% in the first half of 2015 (compared with 5.2% previously). While the ringgit and Indonesian rupiah have tumbled to 16.6% and 8.14% respectively in value against the US dollar, the dong has only slid 4.32%, and has even climbed 15% against the ringgit. Vietnam is part of the recently concluded TransPacific Partnership Agreement, and is expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries in this part of the world if the pact is ratified.
Philippines Semirara eyes 12% increase in coal Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) expects to increase its coal mine output by 12% in 2016. The company aims to increase share of domestic sales versus exports in light of the commissioning of new power plants and the expansion of cement production in the country.

ConocoPhillips to end deepwater exploration In response to the industry downcycle, the world’s largest independent operator will end searching for oil and gas in deepwater fields by 2017. ConocoPhillips has 2.2 million acres in Gulf of Mexico leases, and its strategy includes reassessing these assets and selling off the leases where the company has no plans to drill. Appraisal activities currently underway will continue, as will funding to existing commitments. Whether or not it will develop its offshore discoveries has yet to be decided. Keystone XL pipeline formally rejected The controversial TransCanada pipeline, which would transport oil sands crude from Alberta to Texas, has officially been denied approval by the Obama administration after seven years in limbo. The company is exploring its remaining options, which include reapplying for a permit after the next US presidential election. The company is heavily invested in this project because it has already spent US$2.6bn on preparations and property.
In November we welcomed Bill Westcott (pictured above) Director of Business Development at INTECSEA to host Opportunities with INTECSEA; 23 delegates from 17 member companies attended the event. We continue to monitor industry trends, projects and opportunities in Mexico and Canada. Our team attended several Houston-Mexico Energy Group events for networking opportunities and market intelligence around the power sector in Mexico. We were also part of a roundtable, engaging key contacts from Wood Group and Schlumberger in Mexico. Canadian Atlantic offshore opportunities are a key area. I attended a roundtable in Calgary in October, which focused on the energy sector’s role in domestic affairs and international oil and gas markets, making key contacts in the region. Look out for the Regional Showcase on Canada on 28 January 2016.

TrailStone will manage and operate the JV. Wind Energy dominates new US power Wind energy provided more new US electrical generating capacity than any other resource did during the first nine months of 2015. Furthermore, the combined capacity from renewable energy sources during the first three quarters of the year made up 60.20% of the 7,276MW of new generation placed in service. Wind power accounted for 2,966MW, or more than 40.76% of all new US capacity, followed by solar with 1,137MW, biomass with 205MW, geothermal with 45MW, and hydropower with 27MW.
