Sector analysis Sustainable aviation fuel and the UK’s role
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has emerged as a promising solution to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation, while still meeting the growing demand for air travel, it provides a short to medium term solution before the world is ready for electric or hydrogen aircraft. SAF is a type of biofuel made from renewable sources that can be used to power aircraft. Unlike conventional jet fuel, which is derived from crude oil, SAF is made from feedstocks such as agricultural waste, algae and other plant-based sources. SAF can also be created by chemically reacting carbon dioxide (from utilising carbon capture technologies) with green hydrogen (produced from electrolysis using renewable power). SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel without any alteration to aircraft engines allowing it to be very efficient. Moreover, SAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel. While SAF offers many benefits, there are also challenges to its widespread adoption. One of the main challenges is the cost of production. SAF is currently more expensive to produce than traditional jet fuel, which can make it less attractive to airlines and consumers.
In recent years governments, airlines and other stakeholders are taking action to promote the development and use of SAF via the increase of consultations and introducing mandates and incentives to rapidly boost production and distribution. In 2020 the UK government introduced the Ten Point Plan of which one of the points included taking on Jet Zero, this describes the country being at the forefront of aviation (alongside maritime technology) to push forward low carbon travel and build on UK strengths, taking immediate steps to drive the uptake of sustainable aviation fuels, investments in R&D to develop zero-emission aircraft and developing the necessary infrastructure for the future of airports. Additionally, the UK then established the Jet Zero Council as a sector-wide partnership to accelerate the development and adoption of new technologies to help develop its strategy to reach net zero aviation. The government has also implemented competitions as a way to assist the sector such as the Future, Fuels for Freight and Flight competition; the £15m Green Fuels, Green Skies competition with a purpose to kickstart the development of first-of-a-kind production plants in the UK to produce SAF at scale and the recent £165m Advanced Fuels Fund to support pioneering projects. It is now moving ahead with the next phase, planned for 2023, of a £1m competition to provide the first ever net zero 100% SAF-driven transatlantic flight.
In July 2022 the latest policy established by the UK Department for Transport is aptly known as the Jet Zero Strategy.
The main new objectives are to boost the country’s SAF sector and attain net zero emissions in domestic aviation by 2040, this strategy also pledges net zero emissions at all airports in England by the same year. It builds on the government’s economy-wide goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and the transport decarbonisation plan. Furthermore, as part of the new strategy, the government also plans to have at least five commercial sustainable aviation fuel plants under construction by 2025. It has also mandated the use of at least 10% of aviation fuel (c.1.2 million tonnes) from sustainable sources into the UK aviation fuel mix by 2030. Although the UK aviation and aerospace industries have reiterated calls for a price support mechanism, such as the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, which was successfully tried and tested to boost the UK offshore wind and solar sectors, to drive needed investment in UK production by giving investors’ confidence in the industry. A price support mechanism, which is necessary due to the lack of price certainty for SAF, has helped develop a worldleading renewable energy industry which is now cheaper than the alternatives and has brought huge economic benefits to the country. Due to the nature of SAF, such a mechanism would be ideal for SAF.
The UK has seen huge investment and is expected to see more in the future as it sees itself to be a major market in the sector. In 2022 Saudi Arabia’s Alfanar Group confirmed a new £1bn investment in the Lighthouse Green Fuels project in Teesside, utilising innovative technologies such as the Fischer-Tropsch process to convert household and commercial waste into SAF, as it aims to become the first company to produce sustainable aviation fuel from waste at scale in the UK; prior to this the project had been awarded £2.4m by the Department for Transport through the Green Fuels, Green Skies initiative. Once operational it is expected to produce approximately 180m litres of SAF annually. Other major players who have been working on the development of SAF projects are British Airways and Velocys on the Altalto project, located in Lincolnshire, which is expected to begin construction in 2024 for a 2027 startup. Another is LanzaTech and BP working on the world’s first large-scale Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) fuel plant in Wales which also benefited from the Green Fuels, Green Skies competition being awarded £15m. The production of sustainable aviation fuel will be a great opportunity for the development of the industry within the UK market, with the mandate to be put in place in 2025 alongside companies venturing into the market, the country is expected to mature drastically becoming one of the global leaders.

Why did you become an EIC member? How has your experience been so far?
Competas became an active member of the EIC following an invitation from an EIC member to attend the awards ceremony in London in October 2022. I had seen over the years how the EIC had formed strong partnerships with leading names in the energy industry and so I considered membership vital to supporting the growth of Competas.
Although it’s early stages for us, our engagement with the EIC has been very positive. The EIC team has been accessible and easy to engage. The media desk has assisted with publications and networking events which has been very useful. With access to EICDataStream, our aim is to utilise this tool to identify, track and focus on planned and current projects within the energy sector.
What are the synergies between Competas and the EIC?
The principal synergy is that we both operate in the same key sectors. We speak to the same people who help us share industry expertise, resources and technological challenges. We share the same values in terms of safety, integrity, innovation and growth. The level of contact the EIC has globally is where we see real value to us and the EIC members in terms of our offering and assisting companies with their challenges relating to the recruitment of technical personnel.
Where would you like to see Competas and the EIC in the next 80 years?
It is difficult to imagine how we will look in 80 years. Global energy demand is increasing while there is a requirement to transition into greener forms of energy production. The ongoing challenge is to ensure there are sufficient technical personnel with the required competencies to support and maintain energy projects and facilities across the globe. I see Competas and the EIC playing a key role in the safety and growth of the energy sector. Talent management will become a key success factor and a pivotal role in the sustainability of the industry. Competency assessments are becoming a go-to tool as more businesses recognise its ability to help make better hiring decisions and building high performing teams.

How has the EIC helped you through the years?
The EIC has always been a good partner in the energy industries to go to. There to support companies from around the globe like ourselves, connecting business and giving exposure to projects. Over the years the EIC has managed and set up events across the world, a lot of these Deepsea Technologies has attended or been a part of. The EIC I feel really gets to the fine details of an event, making sure all companies participating are looked after and given the best information. All the EIC staff are just great knowable, approachable people.
EICDataStream is always a key point for me and the company. Giving updates on projects and the awards is critical information to me. Others have access to this also however, it’s what you choose to do with that information that can change things in your business and win the work.
What are the synergies between Deepsea Technologies and the EIC?
We are the perfect company to be with the EIC as many are, the information they can give is where the synergies are. The EIC support us as we as clients need to support the EIC going forward, we need each other.
Where would you like to see Deepsea Technologies and the EIC in the next 80 years?
I would like to see both companies growing, which I’m sure they will. We have as many locations around the world as the EIC do at this current time. It would be good to have double the locations within the next 20 years e.g. Norway. Maybe it won’t be all in the same industries as we currently work in, I hope we all work in some form of cleaner industry, making the world a better place for all. I am sure both companies will still be going strong in another 80 years.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?
Over the years, EIC has been vital in providing the big picture view on a global basis but also highlighting trends at their infancy. There are so many trends which were brought to our attention during EIC market updates or sector specific sessions which gave us the initial introduction but also the ongoing developments in these areas over the years. The energy transition and ESG are both concepts which were highlighted during these sessions way before anyone was talking about them in the mainstream.
EIC webinars also played a vital part in providing us an essential connection to our key segments and played a significant part in providing project and market intelligence which enabled Halton’s leadership team to be able to better adapt and react to the fast changing market environment since the chain of events we have all been experiencing since 2019.
We have also brought EIC together with our customers and different stake holders. Where EIC has provided market data and foresights and we have been able to collaborate directly with our customers creating common understanding of potential future needs and focus.
What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?
The EIC and Halton have significant synergies particularly in the offshore energy and heavy industry segments. Much of our focus toward strategic planning is based on the similar areas that EIC has been focusing on. Recently, the focus on sustainability, the energy transition and ESG have been priorities for both organisations, as well as both of us looking to support our clients to make these transitions in the best way possible.
EIC and Halton also share a joint interest in bringing like minded organisations and people together to find collaborative new opportunities to solve the immense challenges we face, particularly in the energy space. Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?
It would be fantastic for Halton and EIC to continue this amazing relationship for the next 80 years in the same collaborative spirit that these recent years have been. The search for sustainable solutions to ensuring wellbeing to our clients is something that would still be very relevant 80 years from now. We envisage a future which might enable EIC data to be ‘live’ in our strategy and operative tools with the help of AI.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?
With EIC’s help, we were able to: form strong relationships, learn from and network with other energy professionals across the globe; publish articles, have representation on the EIC board and become a voice and thought leader for the energy supply chain; raise our company profile and create a profitable business from scratch!
As with any membership, we realised very quickly that we needed to be active in making the most of these benefits if we were going to make it through our startup phase. So, we are doing exactly that. Over the years, we actively used the databases such as EICDataStream and EICSupplyMap to help us collate information quickly saving us a huge amount of manhours in research. We sought support from EIC directors and colleagues across the globe. We also attended events such as the Energy Exports Conference in Aberdeen which brought a fantastic range of people from across the supply chain together in one event.
The EIC has something to offer all sizes of businesses from start-up to large corporations and across the entire supply chain – we were very excited to see membership cover major operators including Shell, ADNOC and ExxonMobil LNG.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?
The EIC has been a great support to our business in entering new markets. The delegations to Africa have unearthed countless opportunities for the supply of fabricated structural steel. In existing markets Unger has attended the social networking events across the GCC region and the annual golf day in Dubai has offered us a platform for sponsorship and to interact with piers within the energy markets. Unger recently moved into the North American market using the EIC CONNECT event to showcase our capabilities with one of the sponsorship packages. Unger has also established a virtual office within EIC Houston giving us a physical address and contact line. This allowed Unger to advertise a presence in the market and allow domestic clients the opportunity to contact Unger to discuss construction requirements.
What are the synergies between Unger Steel and the EIC?
Unger Steel Middle East and the EIC are both energy focused businesses. Our fabrication facility in the UAE currently targets mostly oil and gas projects and the EIC enhances our ability to do this through market intelligence reporting and EICDataStream. Digital enablers, and other energy efficient products also help our customers. The EIC has afforded us many platforms at events and publications which allows us to inform industry of our advances and achievements in the journey towards net zero. We have also had EIC team members support our webinars during the times when face to face travel was restricted. This added a new dimension to our webinars which our audience really appreciated, as the EIC team members are always informative, articulate, highly respected and good company.
What are the synergies between Wärtsilä and the EIC?
Like the EIC, Wärtsilä is a global entity, operating in 79 countries across the globe. We rely on high quality market intelligence to ensure that we can anticipate our customers future needs; we also need to have access to high calibre conferences, seminars and similar external exchanges of knowledge transfer and networking opportunities to inform our customers and industry of our latest developments. The EIC helps provide these via the various global events which are scheduled to allow an efficient exchange of knowledge, a clear understanding of local opportunities, legislation and promotional services.
Also, we have benefitted from the inclusion of articles, in various publications, produced by the EIC. The EICDataStream resource allows us to track projects from inception through to completion and contains valuable insight into each project. Taking all of the above into account, our lives in business development are made much easier with our EIC membership and active involvement.
Where would you like to see Wärtsilä and the EIC in the next 80 years?
With advances in digitalisation, artificial intelligence, machine learning and autonomous operations, we would see the supply chain logistics process become fully automated. When equipment reaches a set criteria, it calls-off its own requirements with a fully integrated ERP system, without the need for human interface. The relationship would move from the role of supplier to an integrated business partner, thereby allowing the customer to focus on their core business. Suppliers could then be reimbursed through performance-based agreements, or similar incentives, which deliver upon the correct KPI’s and behaviours. About Wärtsilä
Wärtsilä is a global leader in innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets. Atlas Copco’s electric E-Air compressor plays vital role in cost reduction
For more than 30 years, RJ Webb Commercials has specialised in the complete repair and restoration of vehicles. To prepare any vehicle properly for restoring to its former glory, the Welsh company is conducting shotblasting work to clean, descale and properly prepare the surface for the restoration, ensuring the best possible finish.
RJ Webb Commercials is an established expert in shot blasting metalwork, and for many years the company has undertaken projects for cars, trucks and other much larger structures. The shot blasting process is used for cleaning, de-scaling and preparing the metal surface for respraying, ensuring that the refurbishment results are an ‘as new’ finish, even when working with the most difficult of surfaces.
For delivering the best results, the company is relying on an Atlas Copco sustainable electric E-Air H250 VSD compressor, which produces zero emissions and moreover reduces their costs. Immediately, they were delighted to witness their costs going down.
Since the application of the electric compressor into their operations, RJ Webb Commercials has calculated fuel savings of more than €5,000 (£4,470) per year. Further to this, following on from the changes in red diesel, the requirement to purchase diesel has been negated due to the use of the E-Air meeting (and exceeding) all the company’s demands.
With the help of the E-Air, the company has been able to navigate the ever-shifting price changes in the diesel market, while hiking down their carbon footprint to further portray their dedication to achieving netzero emissions – without having to compensate on quality.
With the facility of Atlas Copco’s PACE technology, RJ Webb Commercials’ team can also take control of the compressor’s pressure and flow into their own hands. The innovative technology takes versatility to the next level by allowing the user to define their pressure while the machine regulates the flow; meaning one machine can handle the job of three fixed-pressure machines. This has resulted in further savings due to the ability to reduce the air pressure that is required at one time. i

EnerMech’s first graduate apprentices receive certificates at RGU ceremony
Callum Duguid and Iain Swinburne became EnerMech’s first employees to successfully complete a four-year graduate apprenticeship programme through Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU).
The duo, who both achieved a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in business administration, attended RGU’s graduation ceremony at P&J Live at the end of last year, where they received their certificates.
As one of the first companies in Scotland to support graduate-level apprenticeships, EnerMech introduced the personal development opportunity to its employees in 2018.
The Skills Development Scotland programme, developed specifically to support the energy industry, uses a blended learning approach which allows students to apply their theoretical learnings to their practical, on-the-job work.
Callum began working at EnerMech in 2013 after completing a modern apprenticeship as an electrical technician the year before. Starting his career with the business as an offshore electrician, he progressed into a contract support engineering role before beginning the new challenge of his undergraduate degree.
The RGU syllabus and on-thejob learning have provided a great springboard for our employees’ careers by helping to deepen their competencies and capabilities.
Christian Brown, CEO, EnerMechIain, a project accountant, has worked in financial services for more than 30 years. Having moved into the energy sector in 2013, he joined EnerMech as a lead management consultant in 2015. Iain had achieved a HNC in accounting when he left school but had never considered pursuing higher education until EnerMech approached him with the opportunity.
EnerMech has a long-standing alliance with RGU, having initially partnered with the university in 2014 to create a bespoke 12 month project management course for its engineers. There are currently 10 students at different stages on the RGU graduate apprenticeship programme, with ongoing plans to continue supporting more personnel to enter the scheme. Seven mentors from across EnerMech are also dedicated to assisting their colleagues throughout the four years of training.
EnerMech provides specialist integrated mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and integrity services to the international energy and infrastructure sectors, from pre-commissioning through operations and maintenance and late-life support/decommissioning. The business is focused on offering a safer, more customer-focused, responsive service at lower cost while delivering a much greater level of engineering and technical support than competitors can offer.
Fluorocarbon tests materials for specific production orders
Over the years Fluorocarbon has developed numerous testing stations for investigating friction and wear at different loads, temperature and exposure to environment factors for bearings manufactured using its Fluorinoid® materials.
This allows the company to develop and test new materials with different designs so that it can see potential problems, but more importantly, it allows Fluorocarbon to test batch materials for a specific production order and if required, have those tests witnessed by a third party.
To support customer production orders or just technical queries, Fluorocarbon has a range of analytical equipment like tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, hardness and specific gravity so that properties of materials can be investigated to ensure that the chosen Fluorinoid® material is suitable for the required application.
Fluoroglide® skidway plates in combination with Fluoroslip® lubricating systems are used in many construction yards throughout the world to assist in skidding oil jackets, modules and heavy structures up to 35,000 tonne.
A typical Fluoroglide® skidway plate comprises of 2.5mm Fluorinoid® PTFE hot bonded to a 3mm carbon steel plate with a 25mm welding lip, for onsite tack welding without damage to the PTFE.
Typical friction values are 5-12% for static breakout and 1-5% for dynamic skidding. These values are dependent upon the surface finish of the timber skid shoe, flatness of the installed skidway plates and the use of Fluoroslip®
Fluoroslip® FL414 also helps with uneven loading issues and the construction yard debris that may show during the skidding process.
Hitachi Energy to integrate offshore wind farms with Poland’s power grid
Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, has won two major orders from Equinor and Polenergia to provide an AC grid connection and power quality solution for their jointly owned MFW Baltyk II and MFW Baltyk III offshore wind farms, with a combined generating capacity of 1,440MW in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea.
Hitachi Energy will provide each of the two wind farms with an offshore grid connection that will receive the power from the wind turbines and transfer it to shore, a mainland grid connection that will transmit the power into the national transmission system, and a STATCOM power quality solution to ensure that power flows reliably and stably at optimal capacity and at all times, despite the often high variability of wind power.
MFW Baltyk II and MFW Baltyk III are pending a final investment decision in 2024, and are scheduled to deliver first power in 2027. They will be one of the first offshore wind farms in Poland and part of the country’s ambitious programme to develop its offshore wind potential and increase the use of renewables in its electricity mix, which historically is dominated by coal. The government aims to have around 11GW of offshore wind capacity either operational or under development by 2027.
Hitachi Energy was selected in a competitive procurement process on the strength of its front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies and optimised solutions, its long track record of project execution excellence, and its close working relationships over many decades with Equinor and PSE (Poland’s transmission system operator) and, most recently, Polenergia.

Mott MacDonald to design UK’s first hydrogen village
Mott MacDonald has been appointed to carry out detailed design of the highpressure hydrogen network for the UK’s first proposed hydrogen village in Redcar, on the east coast of England.
Northern Gas Networks, which transports gas across the north east, northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, unveiled in May 2022 a proposal that would see the gas supply for around 2,000 homes and businesses switched from natural gas to low-carbon hydrogen in 2025.
The energy networks team at Mott MacDonald will design the high-pressure hydrogen pipelines, above-ground storage and pressure reduction site for the scheme.
The firm is also designing the aboveground process facility that will inject hydrogen into a local salt cavity to provide long-term seasonal storage and security of supply.
Redcar sits within the east coast industrial cluster and close to established energy infrastructure, including hydrogen production and storage facilities.
The proposal would see Redcar become self-sufficient, generating its own hydrogen from renewable sources.
Hydrogen must be a part of the future energy mix if the UK is to meet its net-zero objectives and we’re proud to be involved in such a pioneering project. We must act now and this can’t be done without decarbonising our heat network.
David Fulton, Project Manager and Pipeline Portfolio Lead, Mott MacDonaldThis is the latest in a series of projects Mott MacDonald is undertaking in and around the east coast industrial cluster. It was announced earlier last year that the firm would be working on onshore elements of the Northern Endurance Partnership and Net Zero Teesside carbon capture and storage projects –one of the first carbon capture, usage and storage clusters in the UK.

OFW industry builds up in the US
The US Department of Interior has published a Proposed Sale Notice (PSN) for the first-ever offshore wind lease auction in the Gulf of Mexico. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is receiving comments about areas being offered offshore Lake Charles (Louisiana) and Galveston (Texas).
The auction is expected to take place by end of 2023. Furthermore, the US Department of Energy (DoE) has initiated a 20 month study period for the advancement of the transmission network necessary to accommodate offshore wind expansion on the West Coast. The US has set a goal of achieving 30GW of OFW installed capacity by 2030.
New US$820m
CCS plan in US
The US Department of Energy (DoE) has issued a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for carbon capture large-scale pilot projects, to be financed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
The FOA will award up to US$820m at a maximum of 70% federal cost share for up to ten of such projects, which should be designed to offer transformational technologies capable of sequestering emissions from either coal/natural gas power plants (minimum of 90% of CO 2 capture from a 25MW facility) or industrial facilities in general (minimum capture capacity of 75,000 tonnes CO 2 per year). Although concept papers should be submitted by early April 2023, a full application is expected by 21 June 2023.

ENGIE Brasil has an ever-growing presence in the country’s renewable energy segment, operating biomass, hydro, solar and onshore wind power plants. In total, the company currently operates 68 power stations with a combined installed capacity of over 10GW. The company also holds a presence in the national T&D sector, operating about 900km of transmission lines in Pará and Tocantins.

Argentina releases tender for 620MW of renewable energy
Argentina’s Energy Office has launched a call for developers to submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the RenMDI auction, related to small-scale and utilityscale renewable projects to be underpinned by 15 year contracts with wholesale electricity market administrator CAMMESA. Industry sources state most offers are expected to be directed at PV solar generation, however, as most are to be located where there’s available transmission capacity. Onshore wind initiatives, on the other hand, are to be located where transmission bottlenecks have been an issue, hence there’s a higher probability that contract awards will be restricted to those planned to be coupled with storage technology. Investment in the sector would be around US$500m.
In February we had the pleasure of holding the Breakfast in Rio themed Gas to Power Opportunities in Brazil with Radix and Eneva. The event attracted over 80 attendees eager to engage in networking and aspiring to do business with both companies. Gustavo Duarte, Eneva’s Procurement General Manager, spoke of the company’s plans for consolidating its position as an integrated energy independent player in Brazil. In relation to gas-to-power (G2P), Eneva aims to consolidate G2P clusters at the Solimões (AM) and Parnaíba (MA) basins through new gas-fired power plants as well as expansions. The speaker also said Eneva is committed to welcoming any company interested in becoming a supplier. Tássio Simioni, Power & Gas General Manager at Radix, provided a brief overview of the company’s presence in Brazil’s power and gas energy segment.
In order to support our members with our bespoke market intelligence service, EIC Consult has hired two new people to the team based in Rio. Fernando Vieira and Gabriela Dantas joined the team in February. We are looking forwards to supporting the growth of our members in the region.
