Sneak peek into the latest O&G hotspot: Guyana Nestled between Venezuela and Suriname, Guyana is home to a wealth of untapped resource in the prolific Guyana-Suriname Basin. With an estimated recoverable resource of 13.6Bbl of oil and 32Tcf, new major discoveries have propelled the country into an oil and gas hotspot. The first and most significant oil discovery in Guyana was made at the Liza field on the Stabroek Block. In 2015, ExxonMobil (45%) and its partners – Hess Corporation (30%) and CNOOC International (25%) – made a groundbreaking discovery at the Liza-1 well. Development of the Liza Phase 1 project included the Liza Destiny FPSO; an up to 120,000b/d vessel with a storage capacity of up to 1.6MMbbl. Construction of the FPSO commenced in 2019, followed by first oil production later in the same year. The second development, Liza Phase 2, received regulatory approvals in April 2019. The project will utilise the Liza Unity FPSO, with a processing capacity of up to 220,000b/d of oil equivalent. The Dyna-Mac-built topsides will be installed on the SBM standardised Fast4Ward design hull, which was completed in 2019. The hull arrived at Keppel’s shipyard in January 2020, where it will be integrated with the first topside modules. The work on the FPSO unit is progressing as planned despite the temporary closure of the shipyard in August 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The delivery of the SBM Offshore-supplied FPSO is scheduled for mid-2022. Spearheaded by an ExxonMobil-led consortium, the Payara development will utilise the Liza Prosperity FPSO to produce up to 220,000b/d, with start-up as early as 2024. Political impasse contributed to the delay of project completion. Despite the delay, developers reached FID on the project in September 2020. In October of the same year, the consortium awarded an EPC contract to SBM Offshore. TechnipFMC was also selected to provide the subsea production system. The consortium has also indicated the Greater Yellowtail Area – which comprises the Yellowtail-1, Yellowtail-2 and Redtail-1 discoveries – is emerging as its preferred location for its fourth development. The development will feature an FPSO unit with oil and gas processing capacities of 220,000b/d and 400MMcf/d. ExxonMobil is opting for a competitive tender format to select the unit, however it has not yet confirmed its decision. Given the worsening economic conditions, FID for the floater is expected to be reached in 2021. ExxonMobil estimates the resource is larger than originally anticipated, potentially eclipsing Payara, with an estimated resource of 600MMbbl.

The operators have made 17 discoveries on the block totalling around 9Bbbl of recoverable resources – Liza, Liza Deep, Payara, Snoek, Turbot, Longtail, Ranger, Pacora, Hammerhead, Pluma, Tilapia, Haimara, Yellowtail, Tripletail, Redtail, Mako and Uaru. ExxonMobil is considering additional developments in other areas of the block, focusing on the Turbot and Hammerhead discoveries. FID on Hammerhead is expected in 2022, indicating that it will likely to be sanctioned, dependent on development plans for the Turbot area. Besides Stabroek, the country has seven active blocks in various phases: ExxonMobil’s Kaieteur and Canje; Tullow Oil’s Orinduik; Repsol’s Kanuku; CGX Energy’s Corentyne and Demerara; and Anadarko’s Roraima. ExxonMobil has drilled prospects in both Kaieteur and Canje Blocks to further understand the resource base at the blocks – with an estimated 10Bbbl of recoverable oil resources. CGX Energy has also identified two high-potential prospects within the Corentyne and Demerara Blocks. Preliminary results from the blocks remain favourable due to their proximity to several successful discoveries. The anticipated surplus of oil wealth has created political conflict in the country, which has raised questions about the country’s readiness to transition from its reliance on mining to a global leader in oil production. Though imminent oil revenue was high on the country’s political agenda, the March 2020 election gave rise to a cycle of historical grievances. Following allegations of vote tampering and a lengthy legal battle, President Irfaan Ali from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) was elected as the new government and vowed to revolutionise the way the government is handling the resource boom. The government established a sovereign wealth fund and joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to manage the country’s wealth efficiently. The government also implemented local content legislation in helping overseas investors navigate their businesses in the country, while also supporting local sectors through procurement of goods and services. Guyana’s hydrocarbon discoveries will usher in a paradigm shift that will reshape the country’s development trajectory. The push by the government to improve the regulation in managing the influx of mineral wealth and develop the supply chain’s capability to support the growing industry will further promote Guyana’s attractiveness as a destination for future investments. Inside this issue... On behalf of everyone at the Energy Industries Council, I’d like to wish you all a Happy Mark R isley New Year as we dust off the workstations, unpack the laptops, figure out the wiring and start tackling the long list of emails that have accumulated over the break. Like with most companies, the team here at the EIC is starting the new year with a number of exciting projects, events and initiatives planned for the next 12 months, all with the goal of better serving our members. One of the most exciting changes to our organisation is the recent appointment of Rebecca Groundwater, formerly of Oil & Gas UK, and the UK, Scottish and European parliaments, who joins the team in the brand new role of External Affairs Manager. Rebecca’s arrival signals our intention to have a more active role in raising the profile of the energy supply chain in the decarbonisation discussion, and to champion world class supply chain capability in the UK and beyond. The appointment will help us to cement our role as the voice of the integrated supply chain, with increased dialogue between industry and government as we ensure the supply chain remains anchored in the UK while exporting its expertise and capability. We are also excited to be relaunching the EIC website soon, which has been redesigned in its entirety to provide a smoother user experience and more attractive interface, as well as offering a new portal service to manage your details, pay invoices and update your mailing preferences. Not ones to rest on our laurels, the EIC also has three major events coming up in the next three months, starting with EIC Connect Virtual Clean Energy UAE on 23-24 February. Now in its 10th year, EIC Connect has become a renowned fixture in the United Arab Emirates and we’re delighted to be bringing it back to showcase opportunities across the energy spectrum. In March, the popular EIC Connect Virtual Vietnam and EIC Connect Virtual Energy USA events will also return on 16-17 March and 30-31 March respectively, featuring confirmed speakers including Bechtel, BP and ExxonMobil. As you may have guessed, all three events will be fully virtual, following the same format as last year’s successful Virtual Energy Exports Conference and EIC Connect Virtual Saudi Arabia. In this edition of Inside Energy, EIC’s Research Analyst Siti Sarah Rifqah Mohamed Reza gives a sneak peak into the latest oil and gas hotspot – Guyana. In case you missed it, you can also find out about the winners of the 2020 EIC Awards, including STATS Group who picked up EIC Company of the Year. Head to page 8 to read our interview with Philippe Somers, CEO at EIC member company ACE 54, and find out about its plans to expand into new markets. Winners 2020

Virtual EIC Awards 2020

The EIC has announced the winners of the 2020 EIC Awards, with 13 companies sharing the top prizes in 12 categories, and one lucky Rising Star winning a scholarship worth £18,500 at the Robert Gordon University (RGU). STATS Group picked up the biggest award of the night, the EIC Company of the Year, with the company’s winning submission in the 2020 EIC Survive and Thrive Insight Report highlighting the success of their patented BISEP® technology. Katarina Balcova, Marketing and CRM Key User at TÜV SÜD won the EIC/RGU Rising Star MBA Award, beating 16 of the best and brightest in the energy sector to win a full scholarship on an MBA programme of her choice at RGU. EIC CEO Stuart Broadley said: “This year companies have demonstrated their resilience in market conditions never seen before. The competition among EIC Survive and Thrive submissions was fierce, and the finalists made it extremely difficult for the judges to select their winners. It’s inspiring to be working with some of the energy industry’s best business leaders.” The award categories reflect the key growth strategies employed by energy supply chain businesses in tough markets. These include three new categories for 2020: Energy Transition, Transformation and Culture. Judging the Export award, Richard Simon-Lewis, Director of Business Development, Marketing and Communications at UK Export Finance, said: “UK Export Finance is committed to helping exporters to win contracts, fulfil orders and get paid, and I am glad to see that the support we provided to STATS Group in 2018 has spurred it on to greater heights.”

One-to-one

with Philippe CEO, ACE 54

Somers

Through an expanded geographical footprint in 54 African countries, ACE 54 offers shippers and consignees more options and a competitive edge. ACE 54 provides technical information and best pricing for project destination services in the oil and gas, renewables, mining, nuclear, hydro power, rail and infrastructure sectors.

Q

Tell me a bit about a day in the life as CEO of ACE 54?

As you can imagine the CEO’s day – like any other CEO around the world – has changed since the arrival of COVID-19.

A

In the past 14 years, I have been the SVP of a multinational freight forwarder in industrial projects (IP) with 800+ employees under my leadership. Apart from my IP responsibilities, I was also a board member of the group’s freight forwarding line of business with almost 10,000 staff and €3.2bn turnover. In September 2019 I decided to transform from corporate to entrepreneur, which was a life time ambition. The formation of ACE 54 Project Management was completed in Dubai in early November. This unique concept allow us to use our global network for industrial projects to and in Africa. Most importantly, for the first time, all project freight forwarders will be able to develop business in an emerging market of 54 countries without major investments in overseas infrastructure or resources. Since our activity is specific to one continent and with the COVID-19 impact, our travel has been drastically reduced. We continuously have the desire to improve the quality of our pricing activity as well as our African network becoming the best in class.

We constantly communicate and exchange with our African network and strategic partners across the globe. We strive to improve our partnerships in the 54 African countries to ensure the pricing and implementation process is exceeding our customer’s expectations. This has become part of our daily routine.

Q

How does ACE 54 help companies develop business in Africa?

ACE 54’s concept is to act as the international project forwarder’s (IPF) internal pricing desk during their IPF tender stage. We cover the process from RFI to award and implementation.

A

ACE 54 provides strategic advise on request for registration of operational offices and legal identities. ACE 54 also provides external corporate governance and compliance packages and aligns with strategic partners. Through the different organisations, we have an exceptional knowledge of the African project market in all six segments: oil and gas, mining, power (nuclear and hydro), renewables (solar and wind), infrastructure and T&D/ electricity. In this way, ACE 54 creates a pipeline and also updates and administrates on behalf of the IPF.

Q

You recently opened an office in Belgium, why was this location chosen and what future locations are being considered?

A

Our forecast was to be more flexible, available and if needed able to travel by car throughout Europe to meet clients. 70% of our clients are based in Europe.

Our European head office is based in Antwerp, Belgium, my home city, the gateway to Africa and the number one breakbulk and project port in Europe.

We remain active in Dubai and continue to grow our Middle East clients from IPF’s to asset owners including fabricators.

We hope to expand next in Houston, covering the US and Canada, and Hong Kong covering Japan, South Korea and China, reaching the four (project) corners of the world.

Q

What does the future hold for ACE 54?

A

ACE 54 has put itself in a position where it can set up and offer strategic alliances between IPF, carrier at the origin and ACE 54 supported by destination agents and heavy lift companies in Africa for larger size projects.

ACE 54 furthermore assists IPF and contractors to export their expertise and success stories of their core business to the African continent with limited financial investments.

Hart wins contract to supply second EFW site in Moscow

James Walker launches Vermilion Seven

Following the successful manufacture of the company’s Speedor Storm high-speed doors and swing gates at Moscow’s first EFW site, Hart Door Systems has secured further export work to supply Moscow’s second 75MWe EFW plant.

Vermilion Seven has been formulated to provide enhanced resistance to rapid gas decompression (RGD) at elevated temperatures in addition to good resistance to sour conditions. These properties are combined with outstanding physical robustness and improved extrusion resistance.

Hart Door Systems has been commissioned by Hitachi Zosen Inova to provide 11, 4m wide x 6m high, high speed Speedor Storm doors which will be installed at each of the plant’s 11 tipping bays. In addition, the company will be designing and manufacturing 11 swing gates, which will act as an additional safety measure.

The James Walker stable of high performance elastomers for the oil and gas industry includes a number of materials that have been long-term industry benchmarks. Familiar names such as FR®25/90 and Elast-O-Lion® 985 have led the field for 30 years, only recently being superseded by the company’s next generation Vermilion® range of materials.

The swing gates will be manually opened and closed by the dumper truck operator who will then be able to control the open and close mechanism of the Speedor Storm door via the selector switch, which is on the wall, close to the door. The high-speed doors, which have a wireless safe edge and safety light curtain, have been manufactured to withstand the hazardous and humid environment of an EFW site. Protective measures to extend the life of the doors include motors being fitted with sealed heaters to prevent moisture build up, as well as exposed door elements being covered in an anti-corrosive C3 powder coat.

Vermilion Seven is James Walker’s next generation hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR) offering that is intended to take over from the Elast-O-Lion® 101 material which is still specified for its robustness and resistance to rapid gas decompression and has been respected as a top performer in its class for the last 28 years.

Hart Door Systems has further strengthened its presence in the international energy from waste (EFW) sector with the supply of a further 11 doors and swing gates for Moscow’s second EFW site.

Substantial investment into new Kloeckner Metals UK site

Kloeckner Metals UK has completed the purchase of a site in Thurrock, Essex to develop a new state of the art facility. Part of the global Klöckner & Co Group, Kloeckner Metals UK boasts 14 business units across the UK and is one of the leading multi-metals processing suppliers in the UK.

This new investment is an important milestone in Kloeckner’s strategic plan to establish ourselves as one of the leading supply chain partners in the UK. Peter Whiting, CEO, Kloeckner Metals UK

The substantial investment into the new site was needed to support the relocation of the existing site at Thames Wharf, London, which, over the years, became too small for the company’s needs. Conveniently located adjacent to the M25, the new site is expected to be operational during the fourth quarter of 2021. Once completed, the new site will create more than 110,000 sq ft of internal space, including newly built offices, state of the art processing equipment and the latest digital logistics and operations technologies.

NES Fircroft releases ‘Women in Energy Global Study 2.0’

NES Fircroft and Energy Jobline are delighted to release the results of the second Women in Energy Global Study. The study was exclusively launched at the POWERful Women Annual Conference 2020. It is designed to highlight both the progress and challenges faced by women working in the energy sector. Produced from the results of an online survey of 3,000 energy professionals, the study investigates key topics within the gender diversity movement, this year focusing particularly on recruitment, retention and mentoring. Future-proofing the industry for the 21st century (as the sector transforms into a decarbonised, digitalised industry), will require the very best talent to drive initiatives through. The findings presented in this report can advance the progress, and process, of effecting change in energy staffing through improved diversity best practice. Key findings from the report include: one of the things that excites women most about working in the energy sector is being able to contribute directly to new energy solutions – a clear USP for organisations looking to attract female talent. Not enough mentoring is happening – only 32% of women said their employer has a formal mentoring programme and they identified this as a key reason why women struggle to clime the career ladder. The top two things women want is sponsored training and learning (70%) and for flexible working opportunities (57%). Women who answered the survey are excited about working in the industry and are positive about the effects of technology within it.

These include three external appointments and three internal promotions. Operating at a group level are Jacqueline Hills who takes the newly created role of general counsel, and chief commercial officer Rhys Jones. These high-calibre individuals bring a wealth of industry experience and specialist knowledge to their respective roles. They are joined by David Brennan who has been appointed managing director across Severn Glocon’s Gloucester headquarters, Severn Glocon Aberdeen and Brighousebased Severn Unival. He will focus on maximising synergies between these business units which develop innovative valve engineering solutions and products for new and established plant worldwide. Existing employees Matt Capell, Rob Green and Wyndham Meredith have been promoted to new roles. Capell becomes chief financial officer and Green is now product director, with a global group-wide remit. Meredith takes the role of plant director for Severn’s small bore subsea valve business LB Bentley. Severn Glocon Group is headquartered in the UK with manufacturing facilities in Gloucester, Stroud and Brighouse as well as an Aberdeen facility dedicated to traded valve products and engineering services for North Sea operators.

Last year required the team to transform the ways in which we delivered our events. We hosted 30 webinars, focused on the whole energy sector from leveraging digital technologies, focusing on global offshore wind, the upstream oil and gas industry, nuclear industry, hydrogen, energy storage, energy transition and many more current topics and project updates. We attracted over 3,000 attendees throughout the world, had over 22 global digital supporters and co-hosts, provided our members with free webinars, had 120 industry speakers, more publicity from the media and had more engagement from developers and operators than ever before. Going into 2021 we hope to provide even more events to our members, bring the most up to date business and sector news, host networking opportunities and allow a platform that members can still promote their brand and stay connected with the industry. We are kicking off the year by hosting a webinar focussing on multi-sector decommissioning, on Tuesday 19 January. Globally the cost of upstream decommissioning is expected to be worth around US$83bn over the next 10 years. This multi-sector webinar will focus on the key energy markets of the decommissioning industry, highlighting specific new business opportunities in the oil and gas, nuclear and wind sectors, while also drawing attention to crosscutting themes between the industries that can provide essential synergies. This month will also see EIC and PEEL Environmental working together again to discuss the range of projects currently underway to decarbonise the north west region. As technology has become the norm for communicating with just about every audience out there, back by popular demand is our global digital supporter package and co-host opportunities. These cost-effective packages allow organisations to speak to their audience using our GoToWebinar platform and social media channels, expand networks and opens endless possibilities. More support needed for onshore wind in 2021?

Towards the end of 2020, the UK government announced its long-awaited 10 point plan, laying out measures to boost the nation’s trajectory towards net-zero emissions. While the £12bn ‘green industrial revolution’ brought further anticipation for the offshore wind, hydrogen and nuclear markets, many experts were disappointed with the lack of support for established technologies, including onshore wind. The plan reiterated the technology’s return to the Contracts for Difference subsidy scheme, but this was not new information for the industry. Experts are pushing for the government to provide more support for onshore wind, as it is one of the cheapest ways to achieve the country’s net-zero 2050 target. ScottishPower Renewables in particular has called for more ‘forwardlooking’ and ‘cohesive’ strategy approaches, especially for the sector’s planning, grid and supply chain policies. Along with the Committee on Climate Change recommending 35GW of onshore wind by 2035 at an installation rate of at least 1GW a year, and the constant push from industry experts for more backing, the onshore wind sector certainly has the room and scope for policy advancements in the near future.

Saudi Arabia targets larger share of hydrogen in its energy mix

Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, is putting together a strategy to develop hydrogen production capabilities as it looks for newer, alternative fuels to be part of its energy mix. Saudi Arabia is among several countries looking to develop hydrogen as a power source as the rush for cleaner energy gains pace. Earlier this year, a consortium comprising of industrial gases company Air Products, Saudi Arabia-based power firm Acwa Power and Neom, the new city planned in the kingdom’s north west, agreed on a US$5bn project to produce hydrogen using solar and wind power. Developing hydrogen could also help Saudi Arabia, which accounts for 17% of global reserves of crude that is second only to Venezuela, diversify its energy mix and further supplement its push in renewables.

Vietnam has been praised the world over for their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic with very few cases and just 10 deaths from the illness. As a country bordering China, the location of the start of the pandemic, some say that the Vietnamese success relied upon them taking it seriously from the very beginning. Unfortunately, just recently, Vietnam detected its first Coronavirus case since April and evacuated 80,000 people from the coastal city of Danang where the cases were discovered. As of today, Vietnam is not allowing entry or issuing visas to foreign nationals until further notice. Previous plans for travel bubbles with neighbouring nations have been halted due to the recent rise in cases across Asia. International passengers are currently barred from entering the Philippines until further notice. Domestic tourism and ‘travel bubbles’ were being considered as an attempt to kickstart tourism in several places, however, recent new outbreaks and subsequent lockdowns have put a dampener on this. Around 27m people on the main island of Luzon are currently suffering another lockdown as cases surge. Malaysia opened the border with Singapore from 17 August to selected travellers in what is known as a Reciprocal Green Lane. The RGL will mean that people from either country can travel across the border for up to 14 days for official business reasons. Malaysia is currently under a lockdown except for three states until 31 December 2020. Indonesia has been one of the countries worst hit by COVID-19 in south east Asia. At the time of writing, the country remains closed to all international travellers except those with an essential purpose, who still need to have a health certificate to be allowed to enter. Singapore continues to disallow all but essential travel to the small country, which had over 40,000 cases of COVID-19. Travellers wishing to enter the country for an essential reason must apply to the authorities and wait to be granted permission. Travellers are required to quarantine for two weeks which must be carried out at a government designated hotel. Latest news is all travellers who enter Singapore must wear an electronic tracking device. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter

We were delighted to have had an EIC LIVE e-vent showcasing opportunities with TechnipFMC in October, with the presence of their Procurement Office Director, Breno Bergmann. He pointed out that 80% of TechnipFMC’s demands regarding their subsea trees are purchased from the supply chain team, and that this market will remain with a high workload for the next five years. Growth is also expected on rigid pipes, and they just recently built a spool base in order to weld pipes. Suppliers are also welcome to get involved in R&D projects, as there will be plenty of projects to come in this area. The webinar closed with a busy Q&A session, to which Breno invited all attendees to reach out to him and his colleagues in TechnipFMC, to find the best fit for each supplier.

We would like to give a special thank you to Aeroporto de Cabo Frio, who was our Global Digital Supporter. It runs a weekly flight from Miami to Rio and is now offering a complete solution for suppliers including stocking, bonded warehouse and land transportation to clients. Option 2

EIC to organise a webinar for your company and promote to our audiences on your behalf

Webinar

If a member is looking to enhance its profile during these uncertain times, the EIC can organise a dedicated virtual event on the member’s behalf for a fixed fee. With key staff located in the UK, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Houston and Rio de Janeiro, we have a great understanding of business culture, diversity, market knowledge and an extensive network on the ground to ensure maximum reach to your desired audience. EIC will work with you and your team to establish your event topic and agenda, substantiating with EIC market intelligence and identifying the types of companies that should be interested. Once this is finalised, we will advertise your event on the EIC’s event website in amongst EIC’s own events listings which attracts over 18,000 visitors a month. Your event will feature in EIC Online, the EIC’s weekly e-bulletin sent to 20,000 energy industry professionals each week and distributed through our EIC email marketing lists of over 38,000 industry contacts. Your event will be posted on LinkedIn (16,000 followers), Twitter (3,000 followers) and from our CEO’s LinkedIn account which includes 10,000 followers. We would welcome the opportunity to arrange an on-screen meeting to establish your aims (examples below) so that we can provide an outline of the project cost and scope of work to take forward. • • • •
