The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, organized in 1897, is pleased to share this Fiscal 2021 annual report: July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.
I am grateful for the work of our 54 Member Societies, GSMD volunteer officers, committees, and individuals who work enthusiastically to support the ongoing business of the Society. Our Plymouth staff of professionals respond to your many inquiries, verify applications, and sustain the international headquarters operation in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
In 2021, we commemorated the 400th Anniversary of the First Thanksgiving during the General Board of Assistants meeting held in Plymouth, and hosted by the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Massachusetts. The Technology Committee unveiled the Society’s new website (TheMayflowerSociety.org).
The General Society launched a monthly webinar lecture series in 2021, covering a variety of Mayflower Pilgrim and genealogy topics to be enjoyed from the comfort of your home. These live webinars are free and open to the public. They have grown in popularity throughout 2022. Our mission of education and understanding of the Mayflower Pilgrims continues.
We continue to look to the future. This is an exciting time to be a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Thank you for your support.

A Message from Executive Director Mark Schmidt
The fiscal year 2021-2022 was one of change and adjustment for the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. As the Society, like many other businesses, made its wary way back from the COVID pandemic, it unveiled a series of alterations to the Society and to its Plymouth campus. An incomplete list would include: A new website and new web store unveiled. Work beginning on the Mayflower Society house to restore and replace electrical, foundation, roof, window and ceiling issues, as well as water damage that had accrued over the years. Building improvements to the Library and Administration buildings. An enhanced presence on social media. Virtual programs, free and open to all, designed to illustrate various components of GSMD to both members and nonmembers. A new membership brochure.
As for me, this has been an opportunity to survey where we are and where we still can go. Our Technology Committee has begun a project designed to develop a way to make applying to GSMD easier for those interested in membership. Work on the Mayflower Society House will continue well into 2023. The National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse continues with its process of restoration and renovation work. We are always looking into ways we can expand our membership base and to engage those new and existing members in meaningful activities that enhance the experience. You, as a member, can help us achieve that.
It is an honor and a privilege for me to serve under this Executive Committee, who I know are proud and devoted to make GSMD as strong an organization as they can make it. I am humbled to serve with a staff as talented and dedicated as those who currently are employed by GSMD. The abilities of both groups are inspiring, and each day provides new opportunities to demonstrate just how strong an organization this has become. There is work to be done, and there are imperfections that need correction, but the aptitude shown by committee members, staff members and other contributors to the organization demonstrate the capabilities we collectively possess.
The coming fiscal year will focus on continued restoration of both the Mayflower Society house and the Meetinghouse. The Technology Committee will be focused on improvements to the application process. Our Silver Books team will continue to research and produce top-level genealogical research. Other committees will continue their processes for improving the different aspects of GSMD’s activities. And the staff will work to provide you with a memorable and enjoyable member experience.
Though the 2021-2022 fiscal year was one of adjustment and transformation, through it all strong fiscal management prevailed.
We trust you will like how this year’s fiscal picture is presented to you, and how this Annual Report reads to you. We look forward to working with you in the days ahead and we thank you so very much for your ongoing support of GSMD.

message from Treasurer General Bart Henson
I am pleased to report that the GSMD was again granted an unqualified opinion (good!) from our auditors, G.T. Reilly & Company, of Milton, MA.
In the interest of full disclosure and transparency, attached is a complete copy of the Audited Consolidated Financials for the reporting period of July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, including the footnotes to the statements.
Compared with the previous reporting year ending June 30, 2021, our Operating Support and Revenue grew by $105,629 or a 4% increase as powered by an increase in contributions. For the same period, Total Operating Expenses grew by $329,545, or about a 16% increase, as we added key staff. GSMD produced an Operating increase of $300,980 to our Net Assets, a reduction from the $524,896 operating increase of the previous year. Your Executive Committee earmarked much of this surplus to major repairs on the Mayflower Society House, our Library, and our Administration Building.
Compared with the previous reporting year, Total Assets dropped from $16,997,294 to $14,692,557, a reduction of $2,304,737 or 13.6%. The investments in our endowment funds managed by Brown Brothers Harriman of Boston (the significant majority of our assets) struggled along with the general financial markets this fiscal year. Your Trustees are monitoring the invested funds to ensure the long-term viability of these investments in support of our mission.

2021 Pilgrim Academic Award
The Pilgrim Academic Award is given for scholarly research related to Mayflower Pilgrims.
This year’s recipient was Judith Swan. Ms. Swan was born on Martha’s Vineyard, having a family history that goes back to an early Governor. Finding a family genealogical tree in 1990, she became interested in a Mayflower connection, researched it, and joined the General Society of Mayflower Descendants in early 1991. She served as the General Society Treasurer from 2002-2008, and Governor General from 2008-2011. She remains active as a Silver Books researcher and contributor to the Mayflower Quarterly Magazine.
