The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is committed to research on the lineal descent of the Mayflower Pilgrims and education about the Pilgrims who traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The Society provides education and understanding of why the Mayflower Pilgrims were important, how they shaped western civilization, and what their 1620 voyage means today and its impact on the world.

It’s been an honor to serve as the Mayflower Society’s Governor General this last year, and I’m looking forward to making more progress on our goals over the remainder of my term.
We’ve made significant progress toward our Mayflower Meetinghouse fundraising goals. The Meetinghouse is the sixth building to stand on the spot where our ancestors worshipped, held elections, made laws and defended themselves. The current 1897 building will become an educational center designed to tell the Pilgrim story through films and exhibits. There are more Naming Opportunities available for those who can help us complete this important project. We have raised $8.6M, or 54% of the amount needed to complete the Meetinghouse. With your help, we can raise the remaining $7.4M so that we can tell the story of democracy’s origins in America.
The Mayflower Society House repairs have been completed, and it is open to the public on the first Friday of the month (“First Fridays”). Members may also tour the Mayflower House by simply contacting the GSMD office. The Mayflower House is important for community events and is now available for rentals.
We created a series of educational videos on our YouTube Channel to tell the Pilgrim story. There are videos on Pilgrim “Firsts,” as well as a video tour of Leyden Street, showing where the Pilgrims’ homes actually stood. You can learn how to make 17th century recipes, hunt for Mayflowers, walk along the ancient Nemasket Trail, or watch the running of Town Brook’s herring-- just like the Pilgrims did 404 years ago.
We started a direct email from the Governor General called Notes from the Boat communicating a historical vignette about the Pilgrims, followed by a new member benefit, such as hotel and event discounts in Plymouth. Be sure that our Membership department has your current email so you won’t miss it!
HG Allie Golon and MAL Chris Schlosser spent thousands of hours to complete the Easy App Generator, using fillable form technology which will save our applicants, historians and verifiers considerable time and effort. We also had nearly 300 members who have volunteered to index applications for the Easy App Generator! Thank you!
Allie also formed the SWAT Team, an elite group of historians who have pitched in to help member societies who needed help to reduce their application backlogs. The amazing SWAT Team has processed over 200 applications this year! For those who need extra help on their genealogy research or preparing their own applications, we now offer Genealogy Research Services for a fee. Anyone can hire our genealogists for a small or large project to help you break through your genealogical brick walls.
We proudly produced the newest Thomas Rogers Silver Book and a three volume Index of all 41 Silver Books of Pilgrim genealogy. Our Scholarship Committee currently awards six scholarships to deserving students, including a new scholarship for a Native American student.
My gratitude goes out to all the thousands of donors and volunteers who have selflessly given their resources, time and talent to tell our story. The Pilgrims sacrificed much to found their little colony in the wilderness. When you work to tell their story, you honor them and their contributions.

The fiscal year 2023-2024 was one of success but also a passing of the torch.
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants’ triennial Congress meant that there was a new Administration chosen by the membership. Governor General Jane Hurt’s term ended in September 2023, and new Governor General Lisa Pennington was elected. As Congress commenced, the restoration and renovations on the Mayflower Society house drew to a close. Work done on the interior and exterior of the house, from the roof down to the foundation, was essentially completed (although some exterior repairs remain). The House was unveiled for the membership during Congress, and has been opened to the public throughout the year—both for tours and for private rentals.
The focus now turns to the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse. Because of the pandemic, GSMD was unable to fully launch a full-scale capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to complete the project. It is now time to undertake that effort. When it is finished, the Meetinghouse will provide GSMD with a venue that will more completely allow visitors to be educated about the passengers on the Mayflower and to inform the public about their impact upon world history.
The planned restoration efforts, which include interactive displays and exhibits, will make the Meetinghouse a centerpiece for tourism and entertainment, and a destination place for the visitors and locals alike. There is much work to be done but we hope to attract interested people, members and non-members alike, to raise the necessary funds in order to complete the project in a timely manner.
The emphasis on Development seems to be working, as the number of donors grew.
Other notable accomplishments during the fiscal year included an increased amount of community events. GSMD was an active participant with the town of Plymouth in its America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Day Parade, its downtown Halloween Trick or Treating event, its Christmas Tree decorating on Main Street, and other local events. Additionally, the Society held its children’s Teddy Bear Tea event and expanded the virtual talks, allowing many people to take part in Society programming. The opening of the Mayflower Society house has also allowed the Society to play host to events such as a poetry reading and a local philanthropic organization to host its grant presentation to organizations working to prevent opioid addiction.
GSMD also launched Research Services for prospective members who need assistance with their lineage exploration. Governor General Pennington was the first client and recipient, as the research team gathered information on her son in law that paved his way for membership. This fledgling business hopes to grow and thrive in the days and months ahead as more people learn about the benefits provided.
One thing that did not change this year was the quality of the staff. I am very lucky and blessed to be overseeing the talent and dedication that this staff possesses, and the Society is in good hands with them at the controls. I cannot thank them enough or praise them enough for their good work, strong effort and upbeat personas. They have overcome a lot but they continue to do great things.

The financial state of your Society remains strong. For the fiscal year 2024, which ended June 30, 2024,
FY24 Operating revenue was $67k higher than the budget and up 2.7% from last year as Silver Book sales, lineage match fees, and research fees were better than budget. Operating expenses were under budget by $131k but up 3.7% from last year. Expenses were below budget in Research Center staffing as applications/ supplementals dropped to historical levels. Also helping to lower costs were lower printing fees, Governor General travel and maintenance costs, partly offset by inflation costs, higher Silver Book development costs, and higher legal fees.
As of June 30, 2023, total assets were $13,628,119, primarily in investment securities or cash. Total liabilities are only 2% of assets. Our total assets, excluding the actual value of our historic structure (Mayflower Society House), decreased slightly in value by $105,026 during the year.. Total Equity increased by $171,147. See the separate report from the Trustees for more information on our investments.

We were blessed with a number of gifts during the year, including Annual Appeal gifts of $202,144 from many donors in the fall and spring appeals, 1620 Club donations of $104,619, and other restricted gifts. Thank you to all who helped!
We are close to finishing all the work and charges for restoring the Mayflower House for a sustainable future. This major project was funded without using funds from current operating budgets. During the year, we began developing a non-operating Project Budget for FY2025 to accompany our normal Operating Budget. Projects totaling $211,826 were funded and approved.
I’d also like to note that the National Pilgrim Memorial Meeting House finances (gifts, accounts, and expenses) were handled completely separately by a different Treasurer and Trustees during FY2024 except for being included in our joint tax filings, and sharing use of several GSMD staff.

The Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes excellence and dedication to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) and is presented to an individual for their extraordinary and extensive service.
The recipient of the 2024 Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award is Bonnie Wade Mucia of the South Carolina Society. Mrs. Mucia has been a devoted supporter and volunteer for GSMD. She is currently serving as chair of the Silver Books Project and she has taken that work to an entirely different level by ensuring the work is done at the highest level by the best genealogists.
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants’ (GSMD) prestigious Pilgrim Academic Research Award recognizes scholarly contribution and advancement in Pilgrim related research. The 2024 Pilgrim Academic Research Award was presented by Governor General Lisa Pennington to Christopher C. Child on September 8, 2024, at the Governor General’s 1620 Club meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.

Governor General Lisa Pennington presented her Light the Candle Award to Texas Society Governor Kimberley Florsheim who accepted the award on behalf of the Texas Society which has gone above and beyond in providing recorded radio programs and curriculum to tell the Pilgrim Story.
Commendation Awards are bestowed each year by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) at its annual meeting to members who have been nominated by their Member Society for their extensive volunteer service with significant direct benefits to GSMD or to their Member Society.
