SPOTLIGHT JENNIFER MANCE
By Jillian Keith
Born and raised in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, 42nd Street star Jennifer Mance remembers watching a production of West Side Story in grade seven and saying to herself, “I have got to be on that stage.”
The same pining coursed through Jennifer after she watched The Naples Players’ (TNP) production of Something Rotten! Now, after 11 years performing on cruise ships and 15
Jennifer appearing in CLUE: On Stage
years teaching, Jennifer sees TNP as her “third life” and one that she’s incredibly grateful for. “There’s something special about TNP and the magic that’s created here. You don’t just meet talented people, but lovely, nice, kind, and supportive people. Community is especially important when your family is involved, and you are looking to expand upon it. Finding the right place to land is important - people you can count on, connect with, and share this amazing experience with. There’s something for all of us - Brett, Madison, and myself. ”
Jennifer’s “first life” started with a spontaneous audition in Toronto for Jean and Ryan Productions, a company that put on full-scale Broadway musicals on cruise ships in the 90s. “After I graduated from the University of Windsor in acting, I took a year off and went to The University of Windsor, Ontario for Junior Intermediate Dramatic Arts. No teaching jobs were available at the time, so I auditioned for a cruise ship production company. A three-month contract turned into 11 years, and I met my husband, Brett, in 1999. He was a cruise director. We got

engaged and married in 2001, and at that time we thought we were done with cruise ships, so we moved to New London, Connecticut, and started our land life. That was the first time I lived in the US and went through the immigration process.”
After living in the US for one year, Jennifer and Brett ended up back on cruise ships for six years before settling down in Canada. “I’ve been so fortunate to see a lot of the world - I’ve been on all seven continents, and have been to 52 countries and 160 cities. I wanted to be near my mom and dad, so we built a house in Canada and I surrendered my green card and started my second life as a teacher. I taught for 15 years in Ontario - mostly at the primary level because I enjoyed having my own classroom. I directed the junior intermediate choir and the school’s musicals. It was during this time that I gave birth to my daughter, Madison, and rediscovered my love for community theatre.”
When Jennifer and her family made the big move back to the United States, Jennifer was the most sad to leave behind the community theatres she’d been a part of, one going back to her teens. “When we moved to Naples, Brett was the one who found TNP for Madison and me. He sent us a video of the theater along Fifth Avenue, and said, ‘there’s a beautiful theater down here, you’ll have to check it out.’ And that’s how our journey started at TNP. We were fortunate to dive right into our life in Florida, and it’s been a great experience for sure. My first interaction with TNP was during the summer of 2022 when I was looking for something for Madison to do. She’d been doing theater and Broadway boot camps since she was five. When I went on TNP’s website, I noticed that they
had an education department, and I liked what I saw - it was hard to believe that it was a community theater. Since being at TNP, Madison’s passion for theatre has grown into dreams of a career - she would move to New York City right now if she could. It’s my dream to one day get to do a show with my daughter.”
“I couldn’t help but miss being on stage, so I auditioned and was cast in By the Way, Meet Vera Stark. I love performing. I feel so accomplished after creating a character, going through the whole rehearsal process, and entertaining an audience. It takes everybody to make a show successful. Most of my gratification and love of performing comes from everyone working together to create something so much greater than ourselves.”
During this time of transition for Jennifer and her family, she has been grateful for a theatre community to anchor her during her green

card and residency process. “I just became legal again. I had a green card 23 years ago and had to surrender it in 2010. I thought the process would be easier the second time around, but no - it wasn’t. I had to do everything again. I haven’t been able to leave Florida for the last two years, and my friends at TNP have helped me through this time of limbo.”
Jennifer has since gone on to perform in The Dining Room and Clue: On Stage and assistant direct a KidzAct production of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. “It’s really cool that I get the opportunity to be a part of the last offsite production at TNP and the first show in the newly renovated theater. It’s going to be exciting being back downtown. There’s nothing like the electricity of being right there on Fifth Avenue. I feel blessed to be able to be in back-to-back shows and be a part of something so special on both ends. I was thrilled to be cast in 42nd Street - getting to work with Dawn and Charlie is a dream come true. Every show they direct has been phenomenal and I’m excited to get back to musicals after four years.”

ONE FINAL BOW
THE LEGACY OF PAPA JOE
By Jillian Keith
As the curtain lifts and the audience is greeted by the clicking euphony of tap dancing feet inviting them into the dazzling world of Broadway, the kinetic and connected spirit of the ensemble of 42nd Street is evident.
Hours of blood, sweat, and tears have been poured into rehearsing this production, but that is dim in bonding efforts compared to the massive final meal prepared by Joseph Loiacono, lovingly referred to as Papa Joe at The Naples Players (TNP), for the entire 102 person team of 42nd Street.
“I love this community. I’ve seen people grow up, I’ve seen babies born, I’ve seen marriages and relationships blossom. I have been so blessed to be a part of this community, and thank God every day for all he’s given me. I’m so proud to be a part of all of these beautiful people’s lives. After many years, my brain says, ‘I can do it.’ My heart says, ‘you want to do it.’ My body says, ‘I don’t think so.’ But, even in my retirement, I’ll have these people and the friendships I’ve created. I hope this theater goes on forever and ever, even without me.”
21 years - that’s how long Loiacono has been volunteering at TNP. Following two successful careers running an advertising and marketing firm in New York City and running a restau-

rant in Texas, Papa Joe arrived in Naples and immediately looked for the best community theater in town.
“My wife and I went downtown and saw a production of Sweet Charity, and were thoroughly impressed by the level of talent. That night I told my wife, ‘this is going to be my new home.’” says Papa Joe, “I auditioned for Guys & Dolls - two days later, I got a call, and that started my career and life here at The Naples Players. I can’t tell you how happy I have been for the past 21 years. The Naples Players has been the highlight of my life. It’s very sad that 42nd Street will be my last performance here after 28 shows.”
Papa Joe grew up in a talented family that heavily valued the arts. “I started performing at the age of 15. My mother was an opera singer, so I was always surrounded by music. I had to take piano lessons and practice every day. I took voice lessons and have done productions in high school, college, and all throughout my life.” Alongside his mother, Joe’s father heavily supported her performances through everyone’s favorite way to their hearts: food.
“Food and Italians just go together. It’s always a pleasure to cook for people and to see people enjoying their meal and time together. My father had a tradition that when my mother had a final rehearsal, he’d prepare a grand buffet of food for the cast, creative team, and crew. His theory was that food brings people together and that’s what makes them happy. I continue that tradition here at TNP every final Saturday rehearsal. I do it in remembrance of my father, and love doing it because I love the people here.
Some people I’ve been feeding from 8 years old to 29 years old.”
Over 28 productions, Papa Joe has seen a lot of change. “I came to TNP at the same time as Dawn Lebrecht Fornara [Director and Choreographer of 42nd Street] and Charles Fornara [Music Director of 42nd Street], and I love them both dearly. They do a phenomenal job on all of their productions, and have created a safe and creative space for so many people, myself included. And Bryce Alexander [CEO & Artistic Director] - I am blown away with the progress he has made and how much he has developed this theater.”
“This has been 21 years of professional-level productions. All the time, people come up to me and say, ‘We went to see this show on Broadway, and this show was far better than

that.’ We’re producing Broadway-caliber shows for our community, and I couldn’t be prouder. That’s why we are one of the best community theatres in the country, and certainly the best in my book. The hard work and dedication of everyone from our staff and volunteers is what makes TNP the best part of my life. TNP has been my family for the past 21 years. I love you all, God bless you.”
As Papa Joe takes his final bow tonight, many performers are taking their first. For Papa Joe, this is a bittersweet moment, and what he
knows will be the start of so many exciting adventures and stories for his legacy to touch. “I have never missed a show or a rehearsal. I love it here and am so blessed to be a part of this organization. We are a family. I wish I could be here forever - continue for another 20 yearsbut that’s not possible. For the people who do have another 20 years, appreciate it. Every time you step on that stage, whether it be auditions, rehearsals, or performing, take it seriously. You know when you’ll do the thing you love for the last time. It’s a labor of love. Am I going to miss it? Yes. And I will continue supporting this place until my last breath.”

Thank You TO OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS
This past season 591 volunteers donated 50,715 hours to making Season 70 a success!
Season 70 echoed of days past when The Naples Players staged performances in schools, churches and living rooms simply to keep the arts alive when they were between facilities or without a home base of their own. Despite being in several locations across Naples, one thing remained united - our dedicated volunteer base.
Thank you to these amazing volunteers who continued to give of their time and talents this past season. We could not have done it without you.
This is truly your theatre. Thank you!

A Cut Above the Rest
Q&A with Wig, Makeup, and Hair Designer
JamieLynn Bucci
From concept to research to pulling stock to ordering supplies to styling to setting, the 20 wigs of 42nd Street took JamieLynn Bucci nearly 4 months to complete. For some this would be a daunting taskbut history buff and designer JamieLynn knew with hard work, she’d make the cut.
How did you initially get into Wig, Makeup, and Hair design?
I have a degree in history, and both my mom and sisters are hairdressers, so I’ve always been in the industry peripherally. I have a collection of wigs and have always loved playing dress-up! It feels natural that I’d step into this role.
What was your inspiration for designing the wigs for 42nd Street?
After checking our stock for available hair colors for each actor’s head shape, I did a lot of research. A lot changed between the 1920s and 1930s, and I wanted to ensure that even the most subtle of changes were captured.
I wanted to capture the hairstyles of not just the popular actors and actresses of that time, but your average everyday person - people who you would see walking around the grocery store or people of color who were still not being shown on screen. The less exaggerated, day-to-day look.
How long did each wig take?
A single wig takes about 4 hours to complete. They had to be built to last and with stand the elements of dancing, sweating, hats, and - in this case - 3-foot-tall headdresses.
What is your favorite part of being a wig designer?
It’s so important to me to feel good on stage as an actor. When I’m on stage, I know the power of a really good wig. The most exciting part of the process for me is seeing an actor settle into their character due to my art.

42 ND Street IS FOREVER!
42nd Street captured the hearts of audiences worldwide from the very beginning and actually has its roots in a 1933 movie of the same name. The film, set during the Great Depression, spun a musical tale of hope, ambition, success, and aging gracefully. It was an instant hit.
The Broadway show, an enduring symbol of American musical theater, exploded onto the scene is 1980. It was directed and choreographed by the legendary Gower Champion who tragically passed away on the morning of the opening. Remarkably, the resilience of the cast and crew, combined with the timeless appeal of the music 42nd Street would thrive on Broadway and beyond.
With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren, and lyrics by Al Dubin, the stage production remained faithful to the spirit of the original film while adding new energy and spectacle. It opened at the Winter Garden and immediately took Broadway by storm. The show won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Chore ography, and Best Direction of a Musical.
has been with us ever since. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of it.
Since its original Broadway success, 42nd Street has enjoyed several successful revivals from Lon don’s West End to regional theaters across the United States, delighting audiences with its infec tious energy and dazzling song and dance numbers. Whether it’s seen by seasoned theatergoers (often tempted to sing along with the still-familiar songs) or first-time attendees, 42nd Street
28 BACKSTAGE 42ND STREET

America’s Mecca? THE REAL 42ND STREET
So much more than a hectic, noisy New York City thoroughfare, 42nd Street has long been a symbol of creativity, innovation, and the enduring spirit of Broadway. It offers the excitement and allure of live theater, inviting people from all walks of life and all over the world to experience the magic of the stage. As long as the lights shine bright on Broadway, as it’s said, 42nd Street will always be the heart of American theater, inspiring generations of dreamers and performers, and delighting audiences. This iconic street is synonymous with glitz and glamor, pulsating with energy until the wee hours.
At the heart of 42nd Street is Times Square, the bustling intersection renowned for its dazzling neon, towering billboards, and throngs of tourists. Times Square is a major shopping and transportation hub as well as the very center of New York’s thriving entertainment industry that includes casting directors, agents, lawyers, and the street’s photogenic ‘host’ – the Naked Cowboy! Times Square an nually draws millions of visitors to its theaters, restaurants, attractions… and tourist traps. Its sidewalks teem with performers, buskers, and street vendors virtually around the clock.
For Broadway aficionados, a visit to 42nd Street is often a pilgrimage, a “buck et list” destination. It’s home to some of the most historic theaters in the world. The New Amsterdam, Lyric, and Shu bert Theaters line the street, mount ing a diverse array of musicals, plays, and other live performances. They have witnessed countless Broadway successes – from timeless classics to groundbreaking new works –and iconic flops, solidifying 42nd Street’s reputation as a mecca for theater lovers.
32 BACKSTAGE 42ND STREET
42nd Street is also a cultural phenomenon. The street itself has been immortalized in countless songs, films, and works of art, capturing the magic and allure of Broadway. Over the years, 42nd Street has been transformed from a gritty, crime-ridden corridor in the 1970s to today’s thriving entertainment district. City planners, developers, and community stakeholders had a hand in restoring its luster and making it a safer, more welcoming destination for wide-eyed visitors from all over.
So, if you’re at home on New Year’s Eve, waiting for the annual ball to drop in Times Square, remember, you’re on 42nd Street!
