SPOTLIGHT JENNIFER & JON Hart

Lots of performers step in front of the audience intending to “knock ‘em dead.” Between a candlestick, wrench, lead pipe, and more, Clue: On Stage actors Jennifer and Jon Hart are certain to do so.

For the married couple, performing on Clue: On Stage is a dream come true and a “full circle moment,” says Jennifer. “Our love of Clue was one of the first conversations we had when we

first started dating. We talked about the movie and the game for hours and 20 years later, we’re still married! We’ve always shared a connection with Clue, so when we found out TNP was doing Clue, we wanted to audition. We were both freaking out when we got in.”

Jon came out of a long acting hiatus to share this first-time moment with his wife. “We’ve always shared a passion for Clue, so I was like, ‘Let me come out of acting retirement.’ We didn’t know at the time how great of a show or cast it would be. I was so excited for Jen to be back on stage again, and to get back on stage. I was a film and television major in college, so I had to study acting from that perspective - writing and directing, understanding the motivation for actors. But, I’ve always had an interest in performing. It has been great performing again,” says Jon.

Jennifer and Jon first found TNP by having their kids train in the KidzAct program. “We were just proud parents and audience members for many years,” Jennifer recalls. “We were super big fans after years of watching amazing

productions and have always been impressed by the quality of shows. I was a theater and dance major in college. Like many people, I went in a different direction professionally and stopped acting. My first show since school was The Dining Room in the fall. When we were both cast in Clue, there was some major cheering in our household. Our kids were so excited for us. We’ve turned them into big fans of Clue as well.”

The couple’s love of the movie and board game has fueled their passion for the play. “I think what made the movie so great is that it is like a play. That’s part of what makes it such a great show - the repartee between the actors and the pacing of the line delivery,” says Jon. “It’s a lot like a musical in some ways because it’s very choreographed and active. It’s a high-energy, fun ride and people are going to be laughing while trying to figure out who’s the murderer.”

Jennifer adds, “It’s a fast-paced comedy that’s very physical. It’s a great, interactive story that’s very well-staged and unique. It’s a true ensemble piece - certainly, there are some primary characters, everyone’s movie and game favorites, but there are so many different characters added into the equation as well. It’s family-friendly, and there are references for everyone; board game, film, and mystery lovers alike. The script and directing lend themselves well to die-hard fans of Clue and people who aren’t familiar with it.”

For both Jennifer and Jon, their favorite part of the process has been, in Jennifer’s words, the “thrilling rehearsal process. Everyone’s so funny and generous with their acting. James Duggan is a great director who knows comedy. Everyone’s bringing something unique to these classic characters, and everyone’s willing to play, which is a lot of fun.”

“This is a massive learning opportunity getting to be on stage with so many seasoned pros with such long acting resumes,” says Jon. “Just getting the chance to hang out with and learn from them has allowed me to bring my A-game.”

“I know everyone says this,” states Jennifer, “but TNP really is a community. I’ve been so amazed by how professional and dedicated everyone is - from the people on stage to the creative team to the crew, designers, and production team. It’s very Broadway-caliber work being brought to this Naples community, and it’s a blessing. It’s one of the highlights of why people love this town.” Jon adds, “We’ve lived in many different places over the last 25+ years and have had exposure to a lot of community theaters and TNP is by far number one. We’re very fortunate to have access to this community and get to experience this. No one is more excited than our daughter, Kizzie, for the grand reopening on Fifth,” says Jon. “She thinks the main theater is named after her, and who are we to tell her otherwise?”

Clue’s History

Before Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, and Colonel Mustard ever gathered on a game board to claim their first victim, a British musician named ANTHONY PRATT was dreaming about murder-mystery scenarios in European country mansions where he played the piano while guests play-acted dastardly crimes for their entertainment.

ANTHONY P R ATT

Years later, during World War II, Pratt recreated those same murder-mystery parlor games in miniature, as a board game he called Murder! (later Clue). Working in a munitions factory during the war, Pratt invented the suspects and weapons between 1943 and 1945 to help him get through the long nights during air-raid blackouts.

In 1947, Pratt patented the game and sold it to a U.K.based manufacturer called Waddington’s and its American counterpart, Parker Brothers (now owned by Hasbro). But because of post-war shortages, the game wasn’t released until 1949—as Cluedo in England and Clue in the United States. In both versions, players collect clues to figure out the murder suspect, weapon and location. The game took place in a Victorian mansion. The victim’s name? Mr. Boddy.

Although the idea behind Clue hasn’t changed over the years, the board game has undergone countless updates.

Pratt’s original patent, which included 10 characters and additional weapons such as the shillelagh and a hypodermic syringe, was streamlined; in the re-

24 BACKSTAGE CLUE: ON STAGE

leased version of Clue, only 6 characters and 6 weapons remained. Of them, the rope has been updated from an actual piece of string to a plastic facsimile. And the original lead pipe, made from a piece of actual (poisonous) lead, was updated to steel in 1965, then to pewter. A baseball bat and gun with silencer have since been added.

Clue’s characters have evolved through the decades to keep pace with fashion, hairstyles and pop-culture. The original 1949 version would look very old-fashioned now. Versions sold in the 1960s had characters who looked animated, mirroring the growing popularity of Saturday morning cartoons. The 1980s versions adopted the slick style of the decade.

In 2008, suspects’ identities were updated: Colonel Mustard the military man became Jack Mustard the soccer star; Professor Plum the archaeologist became Victor Plum, a billionaire video-game-designer. The mansion got a spa and home theater.

Yet despite Clue’s enduring success, neither Anthony Pratt nor his family reaped any significant financial reward. In 1953, he sold the foreign rights to the game to Waddington’s after the manufacturer told him it was not selling well. In return, he received 5,000 pounds.

The game board became a global multi-million-sell er and was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2017.

BOB CAPPETTA (Mr. Boddy/The Motorist/Chief of Police) is eagerly anticipating the chance to showcase his talents with The Naples Players. Balancing his time between Southwest Florida and Chicago, he has graced the stage in various productions. In Fort Myers, he performed in the musicals Jekyll and Hyde and Into the Woods with New Phoenix Theatre. Meanwhile, his recent performances in the Chicago area include Stage Kiss, Book of Liz, Dangerous Corner, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He thanks his wife Kathleen for her love and support, and he thanks his FSW students for inspiring him every day.

JOHN COOPER (Newscaster/McCarthy’s Voice) is excited to lend his voice talents to another production at The Naples Players! He most recently lent his voice to TNP’s production of The Game’s Afoot in 2023. He has also worked on backstage crew for The Savannah Sipping Society and The Wedding Singer Teen. When John is not working in the Box Office, he is creating beautiful mixed media art pieces and spending time with his family!

KELSEY COSS (Yvette) began volunteering with TNP in 2021 wanting to learn more about what goes on backstage, as she was only familiar with performing on stage. She has been the Assistant Stage Manager for this season’s productions of It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play and The Fantasticks. She recently enjoyed dancing and singing in the 2024 Front and Center Gala. Kelsey has performed professionally in various shows and parades for Disney, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios for the last decade. She is also excited to stage manage her first TNP production this upcoming season in The Half-Life of Marie Curie.

KATIE CROSS (Miss Scarlet) was raised in Colorado and received her BFA in Theater Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her theater credits include Sweet & Lucky (Denver Center/Third Rail Productions), The Tempest and Twelfth Night (Colorado Shakespeare Festival), In Flight: The Story of Sabine van Dam (Gulfshore Playhouse Outreach), and Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (Emerald Coast Theater Company). Film credits include Life’s Rewards (Amazon Prime), The Right Stuff (Disney+), and Belleville Cop (Netflix). She has been involved with TNP as a teaching artist, volunteer, and videographer. Clue is her official TNP on stage debut, and she couldn’t have asked for a better experience thanks to all involved. A special thank you to her Mr. Scarlet.

26 BACKSTAGE CLUE: ON STAGE
CAST BIOS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)
