FEATURE STORY
MEET
Emilie
BAARTMAN By Jillian Keith
Some people just can’t help but live and breathe theatre 24/7, and Emilie Baartman, playing Myrtle Mae Simmons in The Naples Players’ (TNP) upcoming production of Harvey, is at the top of that list. From a young age, Emilie remembers attending community theatre camps and watching her dad perform on stage. “I’ve been doing theatre since I was a kid. I was first inspired to perform because of my dad. At one point my dad was doing a show called The Sanders Family Christmas. He was sitting in the living room practicing his guitar and singing and going over his lines and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I want to do what he’s doing. I want to be on stage with him.’” “My first show was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I was a fairy, and I didn’t have any lines, but it didn’t matter. After that show, I knew that I wanted to do theater forever. I think even then I just knew that it was going to be a huge part of my life. It makes me feel more human and it’s had an incredible impact on my life.”

Through community theatre, Emilie began working with performers of multiple ability levels. “I love teaching people how to use theatre as a way to express themselves, build their confidence and communication skills, imagination, and help them grow.” Emilie says her background in inclusive performance has helped her in a multitude of ways. “It helped me as an educator and a performer, and discover what I want to do. I’m autistic, so for me to be able to do theater is something that has helped me grow so much, whether it’s backstage, on stage, or working the front-of-house.” “When I went to college, I was set on becoming a film actor, but randomly one day I was given the opportunity to help out with an all ability production of The Wizard of Oz. I helped the actors backstage and during rehearsals. I had a

She ended up getting the role of Dorothy. That whole experience made me realize that I was really passionate about inclusive theatre and theatre education. This focus helped me get a job at Black Hills Playhouse right after graduation, and ultimately end up here in Naples. To this date, I will find an opportunity to do inclusive theatre and provide an outlet for those who need theatre as a way to express themselves, and find their confidence and voice.” For Emilie, there’s no one thing that makes theatre special - but instead it’s a mixture, or “smorgasbord” of all of it. “Honestly, I can’t survive without theatre. It sounds cliche, but I absolutely need to do theatre every single second. Even when I catch myself thinking, ‘I need
a break,’ I still somehow find myself coming back to it almost immediately. I can’t imagine not living and breathing theatre 24/7. Everything about it draws me in - the community, the cast, performing. When you’re on stage, you get to be a completely different person. You get to take a step away from reality and live in someone else’s shoes - see someone else’s perspective. It’s really a gift that a lot of us actors overlook sometimes.” The community here is one of the things that keeps Emilie involved. After moving to Naples, FL in June of 2019 to work as the Education Assistant at Gulfshore Playhouse, Emilie quickly got involved with nearly every community theatre in the area - The Naples Players and beyond. “The art community within Naples is very intertwined. I love connecting with so many people and knowing their stories and continued on next page

them as human beings. It’s just an incredible feeling all being together. The patrons too! Everyone is so incredible and so supportive! It’s unlike anywhere else! After starring in Boeing, Boeing here at TNP, and volunteering backstage on multiple occasions, Emilie has been itching for her next opportunity to perform on our stage. “I went into the rehearsal process for Harvey thinking that this would be just a kooky, fun comedy, like the movie. But on the first day of rehearsal, our director, Paul Graffy, pointed out that at the center of this show is a lot of heart. Despite being constantly told he’s crazy or wrong for seeing a six-foot-tall rabbit, Elwood P. Dowd shows kindness to everyone who he meets. He takes the time to talk to everyone, bring them flowers, and really acknowledge their presence. He’s the least selfish of anyone in the show and is the embodiment of compassion and being a good person. Paul’s whole perspective and direction of this show is really exciting, and I think will be a lot of fun for the audience to see. The characters are great. The actors are great. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have a great time!”

MARY COYLE
CHASE
Harvey is by far Mary Chase’s best known and most beloved and successful work. But despite the enduring quality and incredible fame of the play and its namesake movies and television programs, Mary herself is not generally well known. Born February 25, 1907 in Denver, CO, Mary Coyle Chase was raised on Irish folktales from her mother’s family. These stories became the inspiration for her writing. After high school, Chase attended the Universities of Denver and Colorado before landing a job with the Rocky Mountain News. She worked there for 14 years as a journalist and met her husband, journalist Robert L. Chase, with whom she had three sons. After Rocky Mountain, Chase focused on writing plays. Her first work, Me, Third, was produced in 1936. When the play moved to Broadway, reviews weren’t favorable, and the play closed.
But soon, Chase won audience and critical approval in a BIG way! In 1944, she wrote Harvey and soared to fame when it opened in New York. Harvey won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, making Chase only the 4th woman to earn that honor. Harvey ran for 1,775 performances, the 5th longest-running Broadway show of its time. Once movie star James Stewart took on the role of Elwood P. Dowd in the 1950 film version of Harvey, Chase’s play and her name became the ‘stuff of legends.’ In 1947, the University of Denver presented her with an Honorary Doctorate of Literature. Although Chase subsequently did not write anything else that was as successful as Harvey, she did go on writing. Her output included several other plays, two of which were adapted to film. In 1981, a musical version of her masterpiece, Say Hello to Harvey, premiered and failed on Broadway. After suffering a heart attack, Mary Coyle Chase died on October 20, 1981, in Denver; four years later she was named to the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.

A LOOK AT THEME:
Down the Rabbit Hole Part of the genius of Harvey is that the play manages to be thought-provoking and whimsical at the same time. Elwood P. Dowd has a ‘BFF’ who happens to be six-foot-tall invisible rabbit. Based on this alone, we could enjoy the play as just a lighthearted comedy. But, there are also serious messages here about acceptance, individuality, and the power of imagination. To most of the play’s other characters (and the audience), Harvey is unseen. But although Harvey is invisible, he is very important. In a world driven by facts, Harvey challenges the notion of a singular reality and shows us that intangible and unexplained things exist. Harvey also is a reminder that each of us has our own perspectives and perceptions. Perhaps the fact that some characters can’t see Harvey is a commentary on people’s tendencies to dismiss what they can’t understand. At the heart of Harvey is Dowd, the unfailingly polite, slightly eccentric gentle man who befriends Harvey and treats him as if he were a “normal” person. Despite his unconventional behavior, Elwood is wise and ‘emotionally intelligent’. Unlike those around him, Elwood is unwavering in believing in Harvey, showing us his genuine acceptance of others, regardless of their idiosyncrasies. Elwood’s friendship with an invisible rabbit is a call for acceptance and the celebration of individuality. Compassionate and empathic, Elwood encourages us to resist the pressure to conform. He remains true to himself even when others are judgmental. His belief in Harvey was a huge factor in forging their friendship. And Harvey must have no-

ticed Elwood’s positive traits. He is even willing to put family over self when he agrees to an injection that would “make him normal.” Luckily, his family realizes that Elwood is fine just as he is and that Harvey is a big part of Elwood’s happiness. Harvey chooses Elwood because Elwood doesn’t live by what he sees, but by what he knows and senses about someone – friendship without judgment. Elwood challenges some of our traditional definitions of “normal.” Perhaps, for example, mental health doesn’t require conformity to societal norms; instead, it is the ability to be comfortable with one’s unique worldview. As the story unfolds, the audience becomes aware that Elwood is delusional but he has a capacity for compassion, kindness, and understanding - qualities that society often overlooks. Harvey’s impact on the other characters, particularly Dr. Chumley and Judge Gaffney, suggests that embracing what is imaginative and unseen can lead to personal growth and positive change. The play reaches beyond comedy to explore the profound themes surrounding this unusual friendship. Harvey the rabbit and Elwood P. Dowd teach us to accept unseen realities and to embrace our true selves. It reminds of the importance of empathy and compassion and accepting individual perspectives, all leading to a richer understanding of the world.

CAST BIOS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER) EMILIE BAARTMAN (Myrtle Mae Simmons) is excited to be returning to The Naples
Players for another fantastic production! She was recently seen here in 2021’s Boeing Boeing, where she played Gloria. Other recent credits include Brooke/Vicki in Noises Off, Lucinda in Into The Woods, and Kia in The Last Schwartz. She also has a background in theatre education through Gulfshore Playhouse (as Education Assistant), the Black Hills Playhouse (as a teaching artist and actor/director), and The National Theatre for Children. She would like to thank her family and friends for their love and support!
JODY CAMERON (Elwood P. Dowd) Originally from Alabama, Jody and his family moved to Naples from Atlanta 11 years ago. After a tour to Baghdad and a successful career in the US Army, Jody is humbled and honored to be a part of TNP. It wasn’t until last year that his daughter, Emily was cast as Gretl in TNP’s The Sound of Music that he decided to get back to his first passion: theatre. Since his return to the stage, Jody has been a part of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Dining Room, and is thrilled to be a part of Harvey. Many thanks to his pregnant wife Jessica, and children, Joseph and Emily, for all their love and support!
CHRISTIAN CONN (Duane Wilson) is excited for his second show with The Naples Players. Prior to this, he debuted with TNP as Fitzwilliam Darcy in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. He would like to thank his wife Sydney, family, and friends for their continual encouragement in pursuing his dreams.
ALANNA DACHILLE (Ruth Kelly, R.N.) is thrilled to be making not only her Naples Players debut, but to be making her Florida theatre debut since relocating to the Sunshine State. A born & raised New Yorker, Alanna is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) and continued her training at Michael Howard Studios and T. Schreiber Studio. Appearing in numerous original plays in NY theatre festivals and independent films, some past theatre credits include: The Importance of Being Earnest, Little Women, Female Transport, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Since moving to Florida, she has focused primarily on film work and is so happy to be back on stage playing the role of Ruth in Harvey. Alanna thanks her Mom, Dad, and her family for their unwavering love and support.

DENISE HOEFLICH (Betty Chumley) is thrilled to be making her TNP debut! A former lawyer turned actor from Chicago, Denise has worked with numerous professional and community theatres in and around Chicago including Compass Theatre, Steep Theatre, Redtwist, Citadel Theatre, Chicago Dramatist and more. Favorite roles include Janice in What We’re Up Against and Sylvia Stein in End Days. She would like to thank TNP for welcoming her into this amazing community! JOHN KAMP (E.J. Lofgren) is delighted to take The Naples Players stage for the first time and share this wonderful experience with a superb group of directors, actors and crew. Last September after a 25 year hiatus, John returned to the stage as Judge Gaffney at the Church Hill Theatre on the Eastern Shore of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. In the 1990s, John performed in numerous productions, specializing as the silly father in The Music Man, Brigadoon, Crazy for You, and the father figure in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He first got the acting bug in high school playing Og in Finian’s Rainbow. A snowbird, John spends summers in Kent Narrows, Maryland with his wonderful wife, Sue, and escapes to the Naples paradise for winters.
RON PIRRELLO (Judge Omar Gaffney) This is Ron’s second role as a judge (the first one lasted 20 years) and his fourth appearance at The Naples Players. His most recent roles were Greg in Sylvia and three different characters in Flamingo Court on Marco Island. He urges us all to have a little Elwood P. Dowd and to “prefer being pleasant.”

HARVEY
A Beloved (very)
Large Rabbit
through the Years
Harvey the pooka is almost 80 years old, as popular as ever, yet few people have ever seen him! This utterly captivating giant rabbit has been delighting audiences of all ages for decades, whether their experience with him is their 1st or their 10th! Harvey premiered on Broadway on November 1, 1944, at the 48th Street Theatre and closed on January 15, 1949, after 1,775 performances, making it the 5th longest-running Broadway show of all time to that point. The original production was directed by Antoinette Perry and starred Frank Fay as Elwood P. Dowd and Josephine Hull as his sister Veta. During this long run, Elwood was also played by several other actors, among whom was James Stewart - the most popular Elwood of all! In London, Harvey was produced in 1949 at the Prince of Wales Theatre and then in 1951 by the Negro Drama Guild where Butterfly McQueen (“Gone With the Wind”) played Myrtle Mae. A Broadway revival at the ANTA Theatre in 1970 starred James Stewart and Helen Hayes. Then in 1975, Stewart appeared in a West End revival at the Prince of Wales Theatre. According to theatre historian Jordan Schildcrout, the reputation of the play, which had by then become a staple of amateur theatre groups, improved in the late 1980s because of critically reviewed professional revivals at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C., in 1987 and the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis in 1989. Other major productions at regional theatres followed at Steppenwolf, Seattle Rep, and La Jolla Playhouse. The Roundabout Theatre Company production of the Broadway revival opened in May, 2012 at Studio 54, and in 2015 Harvey had another run in the West End. In 2012, a new production of the original play began previews in New York City at the Studio 54 Theatre. So for audiences, Harvey seems to be timeless and almost always with us – whether we can see him or not!

ASHLEY KOSTEN (Assistant Stage Manager) is ecstatic to be joining another production at TNP! You may have seen her most recently, “as large as a cottage” playing Jane Bingley in November’s production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Her first production with The Naples Players was in The Sound of Music as an ensemble nun and dresser backstage. She found her love for theater throughout high school where she was president of her drama club. In October 2021, she graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC with an associate’s degree in Musical Theater. Since then, she’s been in Naples enjoying the sunshine! She would like to thank this cast and crew, as well as extend special thanks to her friends and family for always supporting her. Enjoy the show! SEAN McGINLEY (Sound Designer) is excited to be back at The Naples Players. His pre-
vious designs at TNP include The Dining Room, When We Were Young and Unafraid, Blithe Spirit, and The Game’s Afoot. He loves coming back to Naples and all the theatre this small town has to offer. Sean has his degree in Music Industry and Recording Technology from York College of Pennsylvania. He has been doing theatre and sound for most of his life and would not change a thing. His work has been heard recently at Timberlake Playhouse, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, Gulfshore Playhouse, The Mac-Haydn Theatre, GableStage, The Penobscot Theatre, Center for the Arts Bonita, and The State Theatre. As always Sean would like to thank his family and Alivia for their continued support of his dream. For more information on Sean please visit his website seanmcginleysounddesign.com or follow @seansounds101
CHRIS RILEY (Lighting Designer) is the new Director of Lighting and is excited to make his return to designing lights with The Naples Players. He was the lighting intern for TNP during the 2018-2019 season, where he designed shows including Annie JR, Guys and Dolls, and Lost in Yonkers. He’s excited to be back, and can’t wait to once again be part of the team for many, many shows.
JASON WAGAMAN (Scenic Designer) graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a BFA in Theatre Design and Technology. This is Jason’s second season here at TNP as the Technical Director. Having designed before in college and professionally in Mankato, this will be his first solo design credit at TNP. He couldn’t be more joyful to work alongside Mike Santos and Amy Hughes in the scene shop. Jason would like to thank all of the scenic volunteers for creating this beautiful piece of art and for making him feel like TNP and Naples are his home.
