FEBRUARY
VOLUNTEER
OF THE MONTH
ASEEM Upadhyay By Jillian Keith
Eighteen months of volunteering, five productions, and one Broadway World award later it’s starting to feel like our first volunteer from New Delhi, India is unstoppable. Since our February Volunteer of the Month’s first production, By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, Aseem Upadhyay has become one of the most involved volunteers in our community, racking up over
1,000 hours both on stage and off. “I found The Naples Players (TNP) because I was looking into getting my acting chops back. I hadn’t acted in ten years and had heard great things about the classes here, so I signed up for one. My instructor at the time encouraged me to audition for my first play here and I shockingly got cast. One thing led to another and I’ve been doing shows here ever since.” Since that class and his first production, Aseem has gone on to perform in The Game’s Afoot, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, and Harvey—all within the span of a year. “I think I’ve improved tremendously over the past year and a half of volunteering. In the beginning, it took me a long time to understand my character’s motives and what they would be like. During the last two shows, I think I’ve gained a huge understanding of my characterization, how every line reads emotionally when I’m on stage, and how to comfortably take up space on a stage.”

LAUGH, CRY, PEE, REPEAT!
The remarkable amount of talent, my friendships, and the community keep me coming back. – ASEEM UPADHYAY “This is an extraordinary group of people that I’m so grateful to get to work with. My directors have all been amazing and I’ve learned something different from each one of them. My castmates have been incredible and so motivating. I look up to them and learn from each of them as well. There’s a lot of support when it comes to the crew, stage managers, the lighting and sound teams, the costume shop - everyone. I’ve made a lot of close friends here who will all go and audition for shows together. We hang out pretty much every day.” Despite only returning to acting in 2022, Aseem has been performing as an actor and a musician his whole life. “As a kid, I would imagine that, even in my everyday life, there were cameras around. I’d even have a musical score running in my head. Acting allows your imagination to soar. It makes me feel like a kid making movies in my head again.”
“When I’m on stage, I feel like the king of the world. Going out on stage for the final bow is one of my favorite parts of performing. When the audience is applauding and cheering, that means that I made them feel something with my performance on that day. I love seeing the audience happy.” While most of Aseem’s time volunteering at TNP has been spent on stage, he also volunteers on our Enrichment Committee and helps the stage management teams with line notes. “I took a stage management class recently and would like to try my hand at it. I think it’s important to have an all-around perspective about how things work. It helps you appreciate all of the unseen hard work happening around you, and further recognize all the people who make a show possible. Plus, I think the skills I’d learn would further enhance my acting.” continued on next page

ASEEM UPADHYAY continued from page 19
Aseem doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon. His “life-changing” experience at TNP has shown him that a “home can be made anywhere. In one word, TNP is a community. It brings people together of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone coming together and volunteering their time to make a show happen from the ground up is just incredible to watch. TNP has made me feel at home, and that’s why I keep coming back. The resources that are available to you, the experts you get to work with - TNP is unlike any other theatre.” “When I was a newcomer, I was made comfortable by the more experienced actors around me. I hope that I’m becoming that kind of actor for the other newcomers around me now. Put yourself out there, you never know what will happen. If you keep continuously working towards something, something always works out.” Thank you, Aseem, for all of your hard work and dedication to this community. Watching you grow both on and off stage, and into a member of our community has been great. Congratulations on your Broadway World award!

By Ricki Baker
September 6, 2023 gets four big stars on my calendar!!! What made that day so special, you may wonder? That was the day I “met” (OK, it was virtual via FaceTime and there were a few snafus) with Naples’ own Patti Corsini Caroli, Carole Fenstermacher, and Natalie King, the talented, intrepid, ultra-hilarious playwrights of Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! (LCPR). By way of background – very briefly because all are accomplished in so many fields – Carole has been a director, singer, and writer; Patti an actor and writer; Natalie a prolific writer. And all are experienced marketers. LCPR is their first venture as a playwriting team. They first met several years ago at The Naples Players. In preparation for our meeting, I had read and reread the play, and thought I had laughed ‘til there were no more laughs to laugh. Boy, was I wrong!
P a t ti
Their play is priceless, precisely because the playwrights themselves are priceless. Smart, funny, caring, talented, supportive, loquacious…. the adjectives go on and on. BTW, did I mention funny?
Natalie, Carole, and Patti were gathered around one computer screen. When Zoom proved to be problematic, we switched our chat to FaceTime which worked tolerably well…except that on their screen I was sideways for the entire conversation and on my screen, they were likewise sideways. Pretty predictive of the entire conversation!

LAUGH, CRY, PEE, REPEAT!
First, about the play’s title. It’s unique, to say the least. They had come up with several, considered a few possibilities like The Hill and Getting Over It as well as Aging Like Fine Whine, I’m Aging as Fast as I Can, and Off Our Rockers before opting for Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! C a r ol e They credit Patti as principal ‘wordsmith’ and report getting great feedback from advance ticket purchasers who bought tickets because of the title. According to the playwrights, this would not be a work that preached or taught lessons; nor would it have themes that were heavy, deep or controversial. Asked for a one-word descriptor of LCPR, they immediately chimed in with ROMP! Confident that a standard two- or three-act play wouldn’t serve their purposes, they opted instead for monologues and ensemble pieces illustrative of their theme and the play’s subtitle: A Joy Ride Down the Other Side of the Hill. And that’s where the planning, writing - and the fun began. Their process from start to finish took a year. Topics were tossed out, accepted, rejected, and modified until a basic structure began to emerge. Nothing was sacred or spared. The selected subjects were assigned, and each member of the team retreated to her ‘corner’ and began writing. During the countless times time they gathered for working sessions, they listened, read, refined, suggested, and served as sounding boards for one another. And, oh yes, there was laughter…lots and lots of laughter. Nat One of the most important criteria for inclusion in the play: the a li e writers had to be able to see themselves in each situation. So does the audience! Broadway World tells us, “From local playwrights Patti Caroli, Carole Fenstermacher, and Natalie King comes this uproarious comedy about womanhood, aging, and everything in between! No topic is off the table as these women tell it like is, and was, and should be.” Asked about their hopes and dreams for the play, Patti sums it up perfectly. “I already have my dress for the Tony Awards. And the acceptance speech is written, too!”

CAST BIOS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER) JO ATKINSON (Kate) first joined The Naples Players in 1977. Her favorite roles with TNP (in that century) were Eliza/My Fair Lady and Corie/Barefoot in the Park. More recently, she has enjoyed being a part of the ensemble of Love, Loss and What I Wore; Always a Bridesmaid; and Calendar Girls. Jo has also performed in The Bona Dea Challenge on Marco Island. Love and thanks to all her family for their support of “grandma’s“ need to be creative – especially her husband‘s patience with Sleep, Eat, TNP, Repeat!
JANIE BALLURIO (Gemma) is very excited and honored to be cast in this hilarious show. Although this is her first appearance with TNP, she has performed in over 50 productions in her home state of Virginia. Among her favorite leading roles are Eliza/My Fair Lady and most recently, Daisy/Driving Miss Daisy. Janie volunteers for TNP as a dresser, usher, member of the Enrichment Committee, Readers Theatre, and TNP Radio Theatre. Many thanks and much love to her husband, Jack, for his undying support.
BEVERLY CANELL (Dodie) is excited to return to The Naples Players. Previous Sugden roles include: The General/Guys and Dolls, Miss Tweed/Something’s Afoot, Mrs. Medlock/The Secret Garden, Miss Flannery/Thoroughly Modern Millie, Mary/Mauritius, Phebe/As You Like It. Thanks to my husband Ed (my roadie) for all his support. Thanks also to my friends who either knit, sing, or tap, and regularly attend these performances. Let’s celebrate this exciting - and often surprising - time in our lives. Thanks to Carole, Patti, and Natalie for their insight and talent; I am honored to be part of this ensemble.

PATTI CAROLI (Jesse, Co-Author) is so excited to return to The Naples Players—this time in a play she co-wrote! Ever since the acting bug bit in 2006, Patti has appeared in musicals, plays, and interactive dinner theatre throughout Naples, Bonita, and Marco. Some favorites include: The Producers, Cabaret, My Fair Lady, The Savannah Sipping Society, Plaza Suite, Torch Song, and the one-woman play I’ ll Eat You Last. Patti thanks Director Carole Fenstermacher for her amazing vision; the cast and crew for making Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! a true joyride; Carole and Natalie for being her writing partners-in-crime; and Victor Caroli, her forever “without whom.”
MARILYN HILBERT (Claire) is pleased to be appearing in this fun production with such a talented cast and crew. Some of her performances outside of TNP include Ethyl/On Golden Pond, Daisy/Driving Miss Daisy, Rose/The Last Romance, Gladys/ Waverly Gallery, Sister Warberger/The Divine Sister, and most recently as Doris/The Cemetery Club. She also performs her one-woman show, Her Last Starring Role, in various venues around town.
LINDA MIZEUR (Eve) is thrilled to be working with such a talented cast and crew in this wonderful production. At TNP, she last appeared as Della in The Cake. Other roles at TNP include Charlie/Always a Bridesmaid, pick-a-little lady Maud Dunlop/ The Music Man, the ensemble of Love, Loss, and What I Wore, the ensemble of The Vagina Monologues, and in the Readers Theatre program. She has also appeared at the Bonita Center for the Arts in their Staged Readings and Funny Shorts. She has been on stage in numerous comedies, dramas and musicals in upstate New York, and her native Kansas City. Much love to my husband Jim for his incredible support throughout the years.

CREATIVE TEAM BIOS MOLLIE BERMAN (Costume Designer) After graduating with her MFA from FSU, Mollie joined the creative team for Disney Parks Live Entertainment as well as freelanced as a designer in the Orlando area. Previous TNP design credits include The Fantasticks; The Marvelous Wonderettes; The Sound of Music; Mary Poppins; Blithe Spirit; The Wedding Singer; Footloose; Yours, Truly; Bye Bye Birdie; and She Loves Me. She has designed for TheatreWorks Florida, Mad Cow Theatre and Florida State University. She has previously worked at Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Williamstown Theatre Festival and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. She would like to thank her friends, family, and husband Reece for their unending support and encouragement.
VICTORIA DUCK (Assistant Stage Manager) is a Colorado native, with roots deeply embedded in the world of Shakespearean theatre and similar classical productions. Transitioning from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf Coast in November 2022, Victoria swiftly fell in love with the warmth and creativity of the Naples theatre scene. Last summer, Victoria cherished her role as the Audio Assistant for TNP’s production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Since then, she has dedicated herself to studying and mastering the art of stage management. Victoria is thrilled to work alongside the talented cast and crew of Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! and hopes you enjoy the show!
CAROLE FENSTERMACHER (Co-Author, Director) Writing is a lonely endeavor unless you happen to be collaborating with two crazy, multi-talented friends like Patti Caroli and Natalie King - in which case you laugh until you cry or pee, whichever comes first, then do it all again. Truly a joy ride! Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! brought Carole’s produced playwriting credits to three full-length comedies (Tango At Two-Thirty; Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat!; The Bona Dea Challenge) and seven short plays including Her Last Starring Role. Directing credits: The Bona Dea Challenge; Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat!; Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike; The Savannah Disputation; Her Last Starring Role; various Funny Shorts Live!; countless Readers Theatre presentations; plus co- and assistant director assignments at TNP. Her most recent appearance on stage was as Lady Markby in TNP’s presentation of An Ideal Husband—an experience she treasures. Altogether, she has hit the boards in more than 34 productions plus her own one-woman cabaret shows. For ten years she has been teaching an acting class at Pelican Marsh. She is grateful to TNP, an incredible cast, and production team for this opportunity. AMY HUGHES (Prop Director) is excited to be propping such an amazing production. Amy is mostly known for her credits on stage in shows such as The Music Man as Marian and Chicago as Mona. She is so excited to step into the role of a lifetime as the properties director for The Naples Players and looks forward to an amazingly creative future.

NATALIE KING (Co-Author) Naples was an ideal place to grow up. After returning home in 2002 after a 35-year career in the West, I found theatre: The Naples Players. I volunteered here in many capacities and then started writing plays. With two incredible co-authors, Carole and Patti, I learned to appreciate the joys of the other side of the hill and will continue to write for as long as possible.
CHRIS RILEY (Lighting Designer) is the new Director of Lighting and is excited to make his return to designing lights with The Naples Players. He was the lighting intern for TNP during the 2018-2019 season, where he designed shows including Annie JR, Guys and Dolls, and Lost in Yonkers. He’s excited to be back, and can’t wait to once again be part of the team for many, many shows.
MIKE SANTOS (Scenic Designer) has been working in The Naples Players’ Scene Shop for over 20 years now. Originally from Upstate New York, where he received his BFA in Visual Communications. Favorite scenic designs include Guys and Dolls, The Wedding Singer, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame for TNP; and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Matilda JR, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr for KidzAct. A big thank you to the volunteers for doing what they do best! And to his wife, Judith, for always being everything :-)
ESTHER SNYDER (Stage Manager) has had a great time learning what her future holds working with these fabulously funny women. By day, Esther is TNP’s Executive Assistant. Her most recent SM credit was Sylvia, TNP’s first show performed here at NUCC. Esther recently starred in It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play and propped The Dining Room. She thanks the designers and the many TNP volunteers for their work on this production, whether they be onstage or off. Break a leg, cast - not your hip!

Ms. Strollo has directed 100+ productions and has 90 shows to her costuming credit. In her 30+ years of involvement in theatre, she has directed, performed, stage managed and/or costumed at the Hopewell Theatre, Youngstown Playhouse, Stage Left Players, Salem Community Theatre, Carnation City Players and Trumbull New Theatre, all in Ohio and, since her recent move to Florida, at the Center for the Arts/Bonita, The Studio Players and The Marco Players. My sincere thanks to Carole, who has opened many doors for me.”
BRADLEY VAN HOUTEN (Sound Designer) holds a bachelor’s degree in Theatre: Design & Technical Production and Theatre: Stage Management from Western Michigan University. Originally hailing from Michigan, he has found a home at The Naples Players here in Florida, where he has been an integral part of the team since 2013. Throughout his tenure with TNP, Brad has contributed his expertise to numerous productions, witnessing the remarkable growth of TNP over the years. His enthusiasm lies in fostering even more opportunities for involvement as TNP continues to evolve in its new facility. Outside of the theater, Brad takes to the skies as a pilot, embarking on adventures to explore new areas of Florida. Alternatively, you might spot him strolling with his furry companion Malone, a delightful Cocker Spaniel mix who is well aware of just how adorable he is. Brad’s multifaceted interests and dedication to the arts underscore his dynamic dedication as he eagerly looks forward to the future of TNP.

Laughter IS
the Best Revenge!
Be honest now…how often do you laugh out loud? In private? In public? And what kinds of things make you laugh? Slapstick or physical comedy? Satire? Awkward social situations? Being struck by other people’s laughter? Being tickled? Whatever tickles YOUR fancy, though, there’s nothing that’s much more fun than laughing out loud! And when our laughter is precipitated by situations that really strike home and are embarrassing at the same time, we’re likely to find ourselves in a laugh/cry situation. Welcome to Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat!, a tour de force of comedy that “hits home” – as if we all had bullseyes painted on ourselves! The three playwrights skewer everything: growing (ahem) old, sex, marriage, being alone, weight, height, social media addiction, celebrity culture, and political correctness. Nothing is sacred. And the characters’ humor, positive attitudes and willingness to be honest through it all, pull everyone in. Sometimes it even gets too close…hence the crying part! The play’s humor often hinges on linguistic acrobatics, showing off the playwrights’ mastery of wordplay, puns, and clever use of double entendre. At its heart, Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! transcends its comedic structure and offers up a treasure trove of more serious and important takeaways. We are able to stop laughing long enough to explore relationships, authenticity, the nature of happiness, and the power of empathy – and we’re even encouraged to go beyond the laughter to take a good, long look at ourselves. And just maybe, by weaving together humor and thought-provoking themes, the play shows us the profound impact that art can have in leading us to a greater understanding of ourselves and our world – no matter how old. For “people of a certain age” – whatever THAT is – the play reminds all of us of the healing power of laughter. Who could ask for more?
