FAMILY
ELEMENT By Lauren Speirs
The Naples Players is lucky enough to have many long-term volunteers - sometimes from the same family tree! Frankie Federico has performed at our theater since he was 4 years old. Now 21, he’s been in over thirty performances and, for a few of them, he has shared the stage with his mom and fellow volunteer, Lisa Federico.
Frankie Federico in The Lion King Born and raised in Naples, Frankie was first inspired by his mom to get involved with theatre. “I saw her in the shows and she asked me if I wanted to do it and I decided I wanted to try it out - I’ve been here ever since!” Frankie is no stranger to our main stage performances with all of the adult actors as he first appeared in one when he was just 8! Mother and son have appeared together in four productions so far - Fiddler on the Roof, A Christmas Carol, Les

Misérables, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. “It’s fun when we’re in the performances together - we talk a lot more."
"Now that I’m older and more experienced, she asks me for help more than I ask her for help so the roles have reversed!” As most would agree with, it’s not always easy working with family…Frankie says, “I was dance captain for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder so part of my job was to give her notes and fix her. Of course she would always take the notes but sometimes she would talk back to me like my mom. She would give me directions on how to run the rehearsals sometimes- ‘come on, speak up, have them start practicing.’ It’s definitely different when I do shows without her. They’re still fun but I enjoy having that family element when we’re in something together.” Reflecting on the past seventeen years with The Naples Players, Frankie says that, “the summer shows the past few years have been the most fun - Catch Me If You Can, Sister Act, and The Wedding Singer.

We just become super close and form a big family with fifteen other kids who you hang out with and see all the time.” Performing on stage for a live audience is always exciting and the process to get there is just as rewarding. “Rehearsals are probably the most fun. You get to know the show really well and all the jokes and inside jokes that make the experience. You also get to make mistakes and fix yourself. Dawn (Lebrecht Fornara, Director/Choreographer of Mary Poppins) has been a big influence on me getting better at dance and all areas because she really pushes me more than anyone else!” Frankie hopes to continue volunteering in musicals here at The Naples Players.

FAMILY ELEMENT Continued From Page 11 "Everyone here is so nice and welcoming and I’ve become friends with them all - from my age group to a lot younger and older!” CEO/Artistic Director, Bryce Alexander says, “The journey of Frankie and his mom Lisa spans many different ages and stages in both of their lives, and they continue to find a renewed sense of joy, growth, and family here at TNP. So many stories have unfolded on the stages of TNP over the years, but it is the personal experiences that become part of a volunteer’s life story, forming a community narrative, that truly defines our organization.”
Interested in volunteering? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players! Volunteers wanting to work backstage have options to commit to time frames ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 weeks. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy. Mary
Poppins T E S T YO U R S E LF!
hen did Mary Where and w pear? ap Poppins first • In the pages of Australian author P.L. Travers's eight-book series of the same name, published in 1934. • It was in 1924, while Travers worked as a journalist at a London newspaper, that she first came up with the idea for a novel about a whimsical-yet-stern nanny called Mary Poppins. The name, Travers explained, came from the inscription "M. Poppins" written in the flyleaf of one of her favorite books as a child.
l’ actual ‘mode Was there an ins? for Mary Popp • While the magical adventures of Mary Poppins are clearly fictional, Travers later said the character was based on a real person, the author’s great-aunt Helen Morehead or "Aunt Ellie" who had a "tall, gaunt, graceless frame, a grim face with a long upper lip that curled at the corners when she smiled, and a voice like the Father Bear's in Goldilocks." • Aunt Ellie, a spinster who lived with her two little dogs, carried a carpetbag. When children came to stay, she gave them lessons in manners and suffered no nonsense.

xpialidocious ce ti is il g a fr li a Is superc de-up word? a real or a ma • Both!!! The Oxford English Dictionary says "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" is a real word that means "extraordinarily good; wonderful." (In the Julie Andrews film, the word is used when you have nothing to say.) Indeed, it was the movie that popularized the word. The songwriters, brothers Richard and Robert Sherman, have said the word originated in the same way they used to make up big, nonsense words as children. • Coincidentally, there was also a song written in 1949 called Supercalafajalistickespeealadojus. The songwriters brought suit against the Shermans for copyright infringement. In the end, the court decided in the Shermans’ favor because documents showed that variants of the word were known years before 1949, making the plaintiffs' claim unfounded. • The word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in Mary Poppins has cheered audiences for decades and inspired people to use it for things that are extraordinarily good or wonderful.

THEATER
OPERATIONS By Lauren Speirs
Not all of our volunteers appear on stage - some are building sets, sewing costumes, organizing props, or even ushering you to your seats! One such volunteer is Jeannine Hedberg, who will be working the lights, specifically spotlights, for The Naples Players (TNP) production of Mary Poppins. After vacationing in Naples for 20 years, Jeannine finally moved here 16 years ago from Michigan. She works full time in property management but in her spare time, she volunteers at TNP!
“Doing the spotlights is just a fun break from the day." “My days get really involved at work. What I love with doing spots (or the lightboard) is the details - you’re watching something and you get a cue. I won’t say it’s meditative but it’s really focused and I enjoy that.” Jeannine enjoyed coming to The Naples Players long before relocating to the area and says, “On vacation I would always get tickets for what TNP was doing and I just absolutely loved it. I love theatre - I’ve been involved since high school when I was in The Taming of the Shrew and volunteered for theatre in college.” Although her day job now keeps her very busy and unable to volunteer as much as she would like, early on, Jeannine was on stage with The Naples Players in The Women of Lockerbie. The play follows a mother from New Jersey as she roams the hills of Lockerbie, Scotland, looking

for her son’s remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. “I absolutely loved it - it was just wonderful. I love telling the story in the style of a Greek Tragedy - it’s a tough story but it’s told very beautifully.
“Making that connection with a live audience is what I love about live theatre.” For Jeannine, it doesn’t end with working lights or being on stage - she has also used her strengths gained from her day job to help out at the theater. “I was an ASM (Assistant Stage Manager) for the KidzAct production of The Sound of Music. I really enjoyed that because my management job (by day) is operations: how things work and how they get fixed. For my schedule, volunteering backstage is much better for me right now. I’ve taken Cole’s (Butcher, Production Stage Manager/Internship Director) Stage Management class and a lot of acting classes.” Jeannine was blown away by the professionalism of the young actors in KidzAct. “The kids were divine - so positive and upbeat. They really came together as a group. From the KidzAct productions of Mamma Mia! to The Sound of Music, I really enjoyed watching them grow. They come in timid and then three years later they’re the lead! The development of the children’s program is a wonderful thing that The Naples Players does.” In the future and when time permits, Jeannine would like to get more involved in other depart-

ments of TNP. “I would love to do something with building sets. I also learned to sew in high school so I would absolutely get involved with costumes when my schedule is more free! I have worked with props as well - during Mamma Mia! I had to get the hairbrush from the lead after she sang into it and it was my job to take it to the other side of the stage.” Jeannine has been involved with multiple departments, volunteers, and staff at The Naples Players and her glowing feedback means the world to all of us at the theater!
“The professionalism of the staff is just wonderful.” “I have enjoyed the musicals so much - working on them has always been fun. I love how well TNP takes care of its season ticket holders with
