The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta von Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are turned on their heads in this fast-paced, rollicking ride as several actors attempt to combine all 209 stories ranging from classics like Snow White, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel to more bizarre, obscure stories like The Devil’s Grandmother and The Girl Without Hands. A wild, free-form comedy with lots of audience participation and madcap fun.

It’s time to give a warm welcome to Samantha Reece, who is joining The Naples Players (TNP) for the very first time in Sylvia. After a long break from theatre performing due to the pandemic, she is delighted to be back at it with our dynamic team of staff and volunteers.
Originally born in Florida, Samantha moved to Iowa when she was six years old. “In middle school our town had ‘melodramas’ for the small town festivals. We would do these silly comedies that were prerecorded so we would be on stage lip syncing them. I loved theatre so much I continued in high school and then went on to be a theatre major at the University of Northern Iowa.” In college, Samantha got to perform in Rent and Spring Awakening and says that her love for theatre “definitely began with a love of musicals.”
After graduating in 2016, Samantha did community theatre and started directing. “That was all pretty promising, but then the pandemic happened and things came to a halt. I decided to move to Naples as my aunt, uncle, and cousin live here. I was supposed to move in Octo-
ber but Hurricane Ian pushed my arrival back to November. I knew I wanted to get involved with theatre again and heard about The Naples
Players from a Google search. I saw that they were auditioning for Sylvia and was excited for the opportunity to do a feel-good show!”
Showing up at a new theater can be intimidating after a big move, but Samantha feels like she walked through the right doors at TNP. “The audition was really fun. I have never felt more liberated during an audition before. In small town Iowa community theaters, everyone knows everybody, so not knowing anyone here was really freeing. I also felt really welcomed by everyone, especially Esther (Snyder, Executive Assistant).”
At the time of this interview, Samantha was in her very first week of rehearsals. “It’s intense! Jessica (Walck, Director of Sylvia) called it an ambitious rehearsal schedule. I’m coming from collegiate theatre which happened at a much slower pace! But this faster pace is really good and it’s helping us find things quickly.”
For Samantha, Sylvia is about connections. “That’s the word that comes to mind for me. The loss of one connection and the gaining of another kind. This loss and gain can be paradoxical to each other. Kate doesn’t quite get what she wants in the end, but learns to live with it. I think the play is about the desire for connections and how that all evolves in a person.”
Another bonus about taking part in Sylvia for Samantha is the chance to be in something more jovial. “A lot of my past shows were tragedies or very dramatic. Even the musicals I was in were both really sad. I’m happy to be in something more lighthearted. Even though Sylvia is a real, relatable story in a very unreal way - I’ve never played an animal before!”

I feel so welcomed by everyone here. Everyone I have met has been incredibly kind, open, and encouraging. I’ve really missed theatre people and it’s nice to be around that energy again!

Samantha also works for Super Science and Amazing Art at Fleischmann Park where she helps kids create artwork. She says, “I really love nature and getting outside always clears my head. Everything outdoors here in Naples is very nostalgic to me because it reminds me of my early childhood in Florida.”
As far as the future goes, Samantha’s mind is open to the possibilities! “I’m excited to see what The Naples Players is announcing for next season. My plans are to go with the flow.” Talking about dream roles, she says, “I would love to be in Sweeney Todd - or anything Sondheim really, or The Last Five Years.”
Come audition for a show! All of our performers are volunteers, with each cast being a mix of veterans, newcomers, and novices.
Fly rail, audio assistant, backstage crew, spotlight operator, board operator...the behind-the-scenes opportunities at TNP are endless!
Assist with repairs, alterations, sewing, ironing, steaming, buttons, hems...you name it! Costumes for every performance are made on site!
Lend a hand with set construction, demolition, painting, and the occasional prop fabrication. Get your hands dirty and have fun doing it!

Albert Ramsdell Gurney on November 1, 1930, he was called “Pete” by friends inside and outside the theater. Asked in an interview why the nickname Pete, Gurney responded, “I can’t explain it. I’m a Junior. My father was called Bert. I have an uncle Al. So, I think my mother, I don’t know why – maybe she knew someone she liked named Peter – but she just called me Peter. And it became an issue because most people outside Buffalo called me Pete. And anybody who knew me in Buffalo called me Pete.” Realizing this response didn’t clear up anything, Gurney added, “There are other people who use Peter as a nickname.” “Who?” he was asked.
Laughing, he responded, “I can’t think of any!”
Gurney grew up in Buffalo, NY when it was one of the leading industrial cities in the country. As a playwright, he was a late bloomer. Educated at Williams College, he served a stint in the Navy, then studied playwriting at the Yale School of Drama. Though he began writing plays in the late ‘60s, he entered academia, teaching literature at MIT until he was in his 50s.
In June 1957, Gurney married Molly Goodyear and they lived in Boston until 1983. They had four children. Only then did he move to New York to be near the theater, television, and publishers while he was on sabbatical from MIT.
That’s when he began turning out plays at a fast pace – mostly for off-Broadway and regional theaters. His ‘source material’ was his own family and their life in Buffalo. Remarkably, Gurney wrote more than a play each year for the next 25 years. His father was uneasy about what Pete would be saying about the family in his plays. Apparently, Gurney, Sr. was pretty hard to impress and didn’t approve of his son’s intention to become a writer. About Pete’s early plays, Sr. “didn’t like them very much.” And when one was well received in New York, Pete asked his dad to come into the city to see it. Dad’s response: “If it’s any good, it will come to Buffalo.”
Gurney’s father died in 1977 and Molly’s mother, Sarah Norton, died in 1978. After their deaths, Pete’s mother married Molly’s father.
Gurney died at his Manhattan home in on June 13, 2017, at the age of 86.
Sylvia opened Off-Broadway at Stage I of the Manhattan Theatre Club on May 2, 1995, where it ran for 167 performances. The cast included Sarah Jessica Parker as Sylvia, Blythe Danner, and Charles Kimbrough. The production received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Actress in a Play (Parker), and Outstanding Costume Design.
The play ran at the Coronet Theatre, Los Angeles, in February 1997 and at the La Mirada Theatre, Los Angeles in 2007 starring Cathy Rigby as Sylvia.
Sylvia was produced by the Berkshire Theatre Group, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in 2011, and was called by the reviewer a “comic masterpiece.”
The play’s first Broadway production opened on October 27, 2015 for a limited engagement.
Since its first appearance, Sylvia has been performed at regional theaters across the United States.
Vincent Canby, in his review of the original 1995 production in The New York Times wrote “Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes. But none is as immediately delicious and dizzy as the one that begins the redeeming affair in A. R. Gurney’s new comedy, Sylvia . Here’s a romantic triangle about Greg, Kate, and the mongrel named Sylvia who, as Kate puts it, eats a serious hole in their 22-year marriage.”
PAMELA AUSTIN (Kate) is a SAG/AFTRA member and studied at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in NYC. She built her resume with various summer stock theaters throughout New England and continued to add TV and screen credits from Boston to Los Angeles. Pamela is thrilled to have found The Naples Players, and is glad to be a part of the family. She was previously seen at TNP in Always a Bridesmaid, Silent Sky, and Boeing Boeing.
ROBERT BALL (Tom/Leslie/Phyllis) has had the privilege over the years to share in the lives of a multitude of well-written characters in the Toronto area and in Naples with the fabulous Players. In Sylvia , he gets a chance to share the stage with a great dog as he brings three more characters to life. Thank you all. It is always a pleasure working with you.
RON PIRRELLO (Greg) is pleased to make his third appearance with The Naples Players, and seventh in the greater Naples area. Prior to that, his favorite roles were as con man Lawrence Jameson in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and curmudgeon Phil in Greetings in the (truly) greater Chicago area. He was pleased to play three roles in Flamingo Court at The Marco Players recently and hopes audiences will enjoy this show, cast, and crew as much as he has.

DOT AUCHMOODY (Costume Design) first stepped on the stage as an actor at the age of 9 as an orphan in Oliver! She holds a B.A. degree in Psychology from Barrington College. Her love of theatre was an avocation throughout her professional career in New England. After relocating to Naples in 1999 with her husband Mark Vanagas, she was hired by The Naples Players in 2002 as the first Costume Shop Supervisor. She will always be grateful for the opportunity to turn her avocation into a fulfilling, creative career that has allowed her to continue to grow her skills as a designer. She is proud to have developed the Costume Department into a professional quality shop. She really enjoys working with the volunteers and the laughter that can always be found on the 3rd floor.
PLUTO BOLL (Sound Design) loves noise and especially making it. This is their first time with TNP as the full season Sound Intern, and they are very excited to be on board at the theatre. Thank you to the cast and crew for being so inviting during this process!
JILLIAN FEIGENBLAT (Properties Coordinator) graduated from Florida Atlantic University with her BFA in theatrical technology and design. This will be her second time working with The Naples Players and she couldn’t be happier to be back and creating with such a wonderful team again! Her most recent work experience was with American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin where she worked as a properties artisan. She hopes you enjoy the show (and the props!)
MIKE SANTOS (Scenic Design) (Scenic Design) has been designing, building, and painting sets for TNP for over 19 years now. He likes to go on long walks around the neighborhood. And always brings a poop bag. But if you do make a mistake on the floor, he won’t make you feel bad about it. If you’re good, he may give you a treat. This show is dedicated to Taz. He was a very good boy.
ESTHER SNYDER (Stage Manager) is thrilled to return to a role she has not held since 2017. Previous SM credits include The Spitfire Grill, A Sleeping Country, and I Hate Hamlet. She thanks her dedicated, fun-loving cast; Jessica and Twoey for an entertaining rehearsal process; Cole for covering tech week; and the many TNP volunteers for their work on all aspects of this production. Much love to Daisy, the bestest dog a girl could ever have.
BRADLEY VAN HOUTEN (Sound Design) earned his bachelor’s degree in Theatre: Design & Technical Production and Theatre: Stage Management from Western Michigan University. Originally from Michigan, he now calls Florida and The Naples Players home. Since starting with TNP in 2013, Brad has worked on countless productions and has enjoyed seeing how Team Sound has grown over the years. He is especially excited to expand opportunities for involvement in the future as TNP grows. In his off time, you can find Brad working on his Private Pilot’s License or enjoying a walk with his fur baby Malone, a Cocker Spaniel mix who knows just how cute he is.
CRAIG WALCK (Lighting Design) After initially working for TNP from 2000-2006, Craig returned to TNP in 2011 after working for Columbia University, The All-Stars Project, and other theatrical groups in New York City from 2006-2008. He then oversaw the completion of construction, opening, and first two years of operation of the Miramar Cultural Center in Miramar, FL from 2008-2011. Overall, Craig has designed the lighting for over 170 TNP productions. Originally from Niagara Falls, N.Y., and a graduate of SUNY Buffalo, he and his wife, Jessica, recently welcomed their greatest production ever: son Liam. Their dogs, Ziggy, Twoey, and Roscoe remain unimpressed.
JESSICA WALCK (Director) is a freelance director, actress and acting coach and enjoys sharing her passion for theatre. She served as the Associate Artistic Director of The Naples Players for 10 years. She privately instructs students in Naples and around the country for college auditions. A performer for many years, her recent acting credits include Ruth/ Blithe Spirit, Becky Foster/Becky’s New Car, Vixen/The Eight Reindeer Monologues, Miss Adelaide/Guys & Dolls, Ellen-Jenna/Maple & Vine among others. She enjoys directing children and adults and has helmed over 20 productions. She is an award-winning director for her production of Escanaba in da Moonlight (Broadway World Regional Winner for Best Play of the Decade). She is a proud member of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SDC) and is a graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. She also serves as a faculty member at New England Music Camp for their Summer musical theatre intensive. She was lucky enough to play the iconic role of Sylvia in TNP’s 2010 production and is so excited to help tell this story in a new way with this fabulous cast! Love to Craig, Liam and The Brood! www.jessicawalck.com
