Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas with Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and her dog, Toto and dreams of a far away place. A nasty neighbor is trying to take Toto away, but he escapes, and Dorothy runs away with him. They meet Professor Marvel who urges her to return home where she arrives just as a tornado touches down. The house, with Dorothy and Toto inside, is carried by the tornado to Oz where she meets Glinda, the Good Witch. Dorothy’s house fell on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, and her sister - the Wicked Witch of the West - arrives to claim her sister’s magic ruby slippers and avenge her death. Dorothy is already wearing the slippers, further infuriating the Witch. Dorothy wants to go home and learns that the Wizard of Oz will help. On the way to the Emerald City, she and Toto meet 3 strangers needing help: the Scarecrow needs a brain; the Tin Man wants a heart; the Cowardly Lion craves courage. Dorothy invites them to join her to see if the Wizard can help. When they reach the Emerald City they are finally taken to see the Wizard, but the 4 must prove themselves worthy of his help by bringing him the broomstick of the Wicked Witch.

6

The friends reach her castle in a haunted forest, where the Wicked Witch’s winged monkeys attack, capturing Dorothy and Toto. They sneak into the castle and rescue Dorothy; but the Witch foils their escape. She attacks the Scarecrow with fire, and Dorothy throws a bucket of water at him, accidentally dousing the Witch, causing her to melt into nothing. The friends take her broom back to the Emerald City. Toto pulls aside a curtain and reveals the Wizard is an ordinary man. He keeps his promise by conducting a graduation awarding the Scarecrow a doctorate of Thinkology, appointing the Lion to the Legion of Courage, and giving the Tin Man a heart-shaped ticker – a watch. The Wizard offers Dorothy a ride home in his hot-air balloon. But the balloon takes off without Dorothy. Glinda arrives and tells Dorothy to click her heels together 3 times and repeat “There’s no place like home”. Dorothy wakes up in Kansas with a bump on her head. The tornado has passed. She is overjoyed to see her family and friends.

The actual Man Behind the Curtain L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz, started it all, but he had to travel many paths before he found his Yellow Brick Road! Born in 1856, Frank Baum grew up in New York State and briefly attended Peekskill Military Academy, where his daydreaming didn’t fit the school’s approach to learning. Though he attended a Syracuse high school, he never graduated. Baum stumbled through many jobs: he raised chickens, wrote plays, managed a theater company, and sold fireworks. By 1882, he had married and wanted a more settled life. On a visit to South Dakota, Frank decided to move the family to the barren landscape of the Midwest and tried a new series of jobs that barely kept the family out of poverty. Over the next 10 years, Frank ran a bazaar, started a baseball club, and reported for a frontier newspaper. Then, at 40, he finally threw himself into writing, and 1898, The Wizard of Oz took shape on scraps of ragged paper. Upon finishing the manuscript, Frank actually framed the pencil stub he had used to write the story. He believed – rightly so – he had produced something great. When The Wizard of Oz was published in 1900, Baum became the best-selling children’s book author in the country. His book began it all, and in the 80+ years since it was published, The Wizard of Oz has been adapted, revised, and released in countless forms. The best known, of course, are MGM’s famous 1939 musical movie and The Wiz, the blockbuster Broadway show. There have been animated films, comics and games as well as adaptations for opera, ballet, and television. And there is almost no language that doesn’t have a translation of The Wizard of Oz and no country that hasn’t staged its own version of the story.
