THE REMAINDER OF OUR

68TH SEASON

Join young Jane and Michael Banks on a journey into glittering worlds and you may just find yourself levitating out of your seat to dance with “Step in Time!” With all the nostalgia of the 1964 film, Mary Poppins says “Practically perfect people never permit sentiment to muddle their feelings,” but adults will find the show irresistibly full of reminiscences.

MAR 02 - APR 03

S P O N S O R E D B Y:

2022

MAR 30 - APR 24 2022

Sarah Treem, writer of the edge-of-your-seat Netflix series House of Cards, created this powerful play about an unassuming, cozy bed and breakfast that moonlights as a battered women’s shelter. Agnes lives on a remote island off the coast of Washington with her 16-year-old daughter where she upholds an ironclad set of rules and boundaries to protect her B&B guests and the women she shelters. Set in the 1970’s, the story examines the harsh realities of life before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, and before women had places to turn in times of distress. Smart and exciting, it will leave you on the edge of your seat with a renewed appreciation of a woman’s rights. S P O N S O R E D B Y : Terry Libby & Larry Siegel

WHEN THEATRE IS IN YOUR BLOOD By Lauren Speirs

How a lifetime love of theatre has landed Linda Mizeur on stage at TNP. Linda Mizeur has been snow-birding to Bonita Springs from Saratoga, New York for fourteen years. She’s been coming to The Naples Players since the very beginning of her time in Florida. “I have to be involved in theatre, that’s my life. I was born and raised in a suburb of Kansas City and never in a million years did I think I would see Broadway shows but living in Saratoga we were just a two hour train ride away!” In Kansas City, Linda regularly attended local theaters and an outdoor theater. “Gisèle MacKenzie was in The King and I and it was one of the first shows I ever saw.”

"Theatre has been in my blood from the beginning. I can remember my dad strutting across the living room singing The Music Man." “I never did anything professional, I just always enjoyed theatre and did shows in Kansas City and Upstate New York.”

10

TNP BACKSTAGE

Linda first heard about TNP and immediately came to check it out. “I read about The Naples Players in the paper and The Women of Lockerbie was the first show I saw here - I was blown away. After that, I took a tour of the facilities and was so impressed! The theaters I performed in previously were the type where you had to go up the stairs, outside and back in to get to the other side of the stage.”

"To see the rehearsal space, costumes, and fly systems, I thought, ‘this is professional and not your typical community theater.’” As a volunteer with The Naples Players, Linda feels the friendly vibes within the organization. “Everyone is so welcoming here, it’s a family. My favorite show that I’ve done was definitely Always a Bridesmaid. It was so fun. All of us ladies got along and we were truly best friends, there was no acting for that part of the story. We really supported each other. I also really loved The Music Man because I was remembering my dad.”

Linda got her performing start here at The Naples Players. “I started with Readers Theatre in the show Clarissa, written by Carole Fenstermacher. That was my first performance down here and I was so grateful to be given the chance. I had acted before but TNP didn’t know that. Readers Theatre is a great way to start out here.” Linda will play Della in The Cake and says, “What’s really interesting is that they were going to do The Cake up north back in 2020 and the director said to me, ‘will you please audition?’ but I was going to be in Naples. I reported back to them that they were my inspiration for doing this play now.”

"I am so excited and humbled to portray Della. She is the opposite of me in beliefs but her heart is large and giving.” Beyond her Naples Players family, Linda has a big support system in her life. “I have Continued On Page 12 >

WHEN THEATRE IS IN YOUR BLOOD Continued From Page 11 a wonderful husband, Jim; three fabulous children; and six of the best, smartest, most beautiful grandchildren, ages one to twentytwo.” Linda shares her passion for theatre with her oldest granddaughter, Savannah. “She’s coming down in a few weeks and I said, ‘Savannah, you know what we’ll be doing, right?’ and she replied, ‘running lines.’ She knows the drill! She’s done some wonderful work in upstate New York and has a fabulous voice. She’s in college and working full time and I’m so proud of her.” The Naples Players is delighted to have Linda in our volunteer family! TNP is a place to come and watch theatre with your friends. You can also join in on the action by becoming part of our volunteer family.

Interested in volunteering? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players! Volunteers wanting to work backstage have options to commit to time frames ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 weeks. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy. h a k e B R E T T E T S N U BR Born on June 13, 1982, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bekah is the daughter of former North Carolina Senator Peter S. Brunstetter. The only daughter among three brothers in a conservative Christian family, Brunstetter wrote extensively as a youngster and got involved with theater in high school. As a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Brunstetter initially pursued creative writing through poetry, but professors convinced her to try playwriting. After writing her first play as a freshman, she decided to pursue playwriting as a career. By the time she graduated in 2004, the UNC Theater Department had staged several of her plays. She continued to study playwriting at The New School, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. While working as a playwright, Brunstetter started a business writing audition monologues for actors to supplement her income. She was introduced to a TV agent in Los Angeles and became a writer's assistant at MTV before moving to the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, where she worked as a staff writer for three seasons.

Brunstetter’s play Forgotten Corners of Your Dark, Dark Place starred actresses in wheelchairs, and premiered at the Theater Breaking Through Barriers' annual festival of new plays. With other Los Angeles-area writers she created The Kilroys' List, an annual list of plays by female and transgender playwrights intended to promote gender equity. The list featured her own play, The Oregon Trail, which premiered at the Women's Voices Theater Festival. In 2015, Brunstetter began writing The Cake which premiered in Los Angeles and has been widely produced, including shows at La Jolla Playhouse, Houston's Alley Theatre, and an Off-Broadway run at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Brunstetter also joined the NBC series This Is Us rising to supervising producer, responsible for auditioning actors and rewriting scripts. She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2017 and 2018.

THE

Heart of the

MATTER

Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission was a case in the Supreme Court that dealt with whether owners of public accommodations could refuse service based on their First Amendment claims of free speech and exercise of religion. The case dealt with Masterpiece Cakeshop, in Lakewood, Colorado, that refused to design a custom wedding cake for a gay couple. The Colorado Civil Rights Commission initially held that the bakery had, in fact, discriminated against the couple. But, following appeals in the state that affirmed the Commission's decision, the bakery took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 7–2 decision, the Court ruled that the Commission had violated the bakery owner’s rights, and reversed the Commission's decision. The bakery was allowed to refuse to make the cake.

ALWAYS A

PERFORMER By Lauren Speirs

Church, school, and anywhere in between Makayla Davis is always ready to shine. Although new to The Naples Players, Makayla Davis is certainly no stranger to performing. From the age of six, Makayla sang in her church choir and still occasionally performs at the Palmetto Church of God in Fort Myers. In high school, Makayla joined the choir and theatre program where she received operatic training. She also received a $500 scholarship for voice lessons with the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers.

“I trained with Candace Sundby in opera singing and competed at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall."

to meet the other characters. I’ve seen how I interact with them in the script and, I’m very mean! I’m not normally mean. I’m excited to play Macy. I identify with her in a lot of ways and really understand her point of view. However, my mom is very religious and I understand that side as well.” Feeling a true fit for the part, Makayla says that even the clothes match her own style. “I can’t wait to be in this role. Dayne (Sabatos, costume designer) showed me the costume ideas and I was just thinking - ‘that’s what I wear every day!’” Makayla sees the importance of a play that will start potentially difficult conversations.

“This play is really progressive and moves us all forward to having more conversations."

"I auditioned for Mastersingers every year and got the scholarship every year. I originally thought I would be a music major. In school, we did an Ain’t Misbehavin’ musical revue and it was my favorite - just five of us and the whole show was just songs. I realized that I love high energy characters and it really just clicked with me when I was in that show.”

"Della is seen by some as the ‘bad guy’ but I understand what that’s like. I’m queer and am a part of the LGBTQ community but I started out with a very conservative mindset.”

Makayla changed course and became a theatre major at Florida Gulf Coast University. This is where she found out about The Naples Players. “My professor was the one who told me that TNP was having auditions. I’m so excited about performing in The Cake. I am most excited

Makayla’s mom also sings in the church choir and came to the US from Jamaica on a basketball scholarship to Texas A&M University. This is where she met Makayla’s dad who was also playing basketball at the same school. Initially, Makayla says, “My mom was a little hesitant

about theatre but now she and my dad are so excited and supportive. They always come to see shows. They’ve never done anything like this (theatre) so I think it was just surprising at first.” Makayla feels support from all of her siblings as well. “I have four half siblings, three on my dad’s side and one on my mom’s, and one biological brother, Marcus who is my rock, my best friend, and my biggest support. One of my half siblings also loves theatre and being on stage.” As far as the future goes, Makayla has big plans for continuing her acting journey. “I’d love to be on stage after school and go to New York City. "

"Playing a different character allows me to experience the emotions of another person that I would not get to experience otherwise. I love it and always found a way to perform."

"Whether it was in church or even just for my parents at home. During the Olympics, I would do cartwheels or try to do splits - by the way, I am not flexible at all! Sometimes I would just come in and sing random songs to my parents.” Clearly meant to be on stage, Makayla will find any and all ways to entertain people and The Naples Players is lucky to have her volunteering in The Cake!
