A Daring New Direction

THE ARTISTIC VISION FOR 2020 & BEYOND

A

lthough Associate Artistic Director Jessica Walck has been a driving force of selecting shows at The Naples Players for years, she believes there is something profoundly exciting about this coming season of shows. “Next year’s season is our most ambitious selection yet,” said Walck. “We are challenging ourselves, our talent, and our audiences in new and creative ways like never before – technically, emotionally, and artistically.” Walck is impressed with the theater’s ability to incorporate new ideas and challenge itself while remaining true to the experience that drives over 65,000 patrons through the theater’s doors each year.

“The Naples Players has a great reputation for putting on

fun, en-

tertaining shows that make people think—whether it’s a musical, drama, or comedy,” she said. “There’s comedy in every good drama, and there’s drama in every good comedy.” However, new concepts are afoot for the theater. For the first time in the theater’s recent memory, there are no repeat shows

14

TNP BACKSTAGE

from The Naples Players’ previous 66 years of productions. “But that doesn’t mean people haven’t heard of or don’t know of next season’s shows— it’s quite the opposite,” Walck said. “The season is a crowd pleaser. We’re producing shows that have been very popular at the professional level, and making those stories relevant to the Naples community.” And while nearly all patrons will be familiar with the story of Mary Poppins or The Wedding Singer, Walck is certain that the less familiar contemporary stories are sure to be revered by audiences for years to come. “We have a real knack for showcasing different forms of art in different spaces, whether it’s a grand mainstage musical, something intimate in our black box theater, or Shakespeare out on the Baker Stage.” But Walck believes there’s more room to experiment with productions in the black box theater. “We are producing a new musical, and for the first time, a musical in the Tobye Studio Theatre. Although producing a musical in our black box proves to have many technical challenges we are excited to embrace the difficulties and bring this new show to the community.”

Generous patrons Bruce & Robin Bache Gray have committed the underwriting support to this upcoming season that has allowed The Naples Players to progress and experiment in their show selection with confidence. “Bruce and I are incredibly excited about this next season,” Robin said. “There exists a dynamic mixture of high-profile, thought-provoking, and comedic shows that creates an exciting challenge for both the theater and its audience.” Producing new work by local artists is essential for the theatre as it continues to take a leadership position in the local community and beyond. That leadership extends to partnering with other organizations to create

meaningful experiences. With this in mind, the new musical in the Tobye Studio Theatre, Yours, Truly will first be performed in concert in an upcoming partnership with Artis-Naples. “We have so much wonderful art here in Naples—and discovering the synergy that is possible through collaboration is exciting for the community to participate in and watch evolve,” Walck said. “It’s just another added layer that makes our upcoming season one of our best yet.” The Naples Players kicks off the Bruce & Robin Bache Gray 67th Season with The Wedding Singer on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

TEEN FINDS HER VOICE IN IMPROV

an improv program at The Naples Players for students with Autism. Emily wasn’t sure what to expect when she walked into her first Friday evening session with Craig Price, the theater’s Director of Community Education and Wellness. But Craig, who has worked with students with sensory processing disorders and Asperger’s, knew exactly how to put Emily and others at ease.

F

rom the time she was young, Emily Buenafuente loved telling jokes. Humor came naturally for her, and she was always thrilled to have an audience to laugh along at the punchline. But as she grew up, Emily’s disabilities caused her to get picked on in school. The 16-year-old has Autism and making friends became difficult. “She has a lot of trouble socializing with peers. Adults, she gets,” said Lisa Delgado, Emily’s mother. “She was having a very hard time in school.” Emily retreated into her shell. But then Delgado moved her family from New Jersey to Naples a few years ago. For the first year, Delgado home-schooled her daughter so she didn’t have to start a new school in the middle of the year. Soon after, she learned about

18

TNP BACKSTAGE

“Craig is just so awesome with these kids and it’s wonderful that he’s doing this not just for any teenager but also for teenagers with issues,” Delgado said. Soon, Emily was getting the hang of games like Gibberish, where kids jump out from a back row and tell a joke based on suggestions from audience members. Improv is a perfect exercise for students with Autism because there’s no wrong answers, and playing off of other actors in a scene helps kids to read social cues and emotions. Being silly is encouraged, and interacting with other students with Autism puts everyone on even footing. For two years, Emily attended weekly sessions with the group thanks to a scholarship from TNP. Without that scholarship, Delgado said that as a home care nurse, she couldn’t afford to send her daughter to the program.

“This program has helped so much,” Delgado said. “And she has made friends now. They’re all very close and she talks to them all the time.” Price said Emily has grown over the past two years and was eventually ready to move up to the Teen Improv group. That group meets on Monday nights and now Emily is doing improv alongside other kids her age with and without disabilities. And to bring it all full circle, Emily now volunteers with students in her old Friday evening improv group. “It’s a lot like regular improv, but I’m engaging more now with other students,” Emily said. Price said Emily’s growth is remarkable. “Emily has grown so much in that time,” Price said. “It’s been great to watch her move on to the next class while still coming back to volunteer.”

Emily said she’s noticed how transformational the experience has been for herself.

“I get to express myself without being judged,” Emily said. “And according to my mom, it actually took me out of my shell. I’m more confident in myself now and I want to express myself.” Emily’s teachers, including Price, noticed her knack for comedic timing and have suggested she start doing stand-up comedy some day in the future. “I’m constantly thinking about doing it now,” Emily said.

Front & Center Gala

AN EVENING IN SUPPORT OF TNP

Naples is no stranger to lavish annual gatherings in support of the many non-profit organizations that call it home. In the past few years, we have worked to slowly evolve our annual fundraising event from an overthe-top event that took endless months of planning and countless hours from our staff and committees to a more intimate, relaxed, outdoor dining experience that highlights our programs and local talent. From this slow evolution finally came this season’s TNP Front & Center Gala. On Tuesday, February 18th, the plaza in front of our theatre, at the center of 5th Avenue, served as the backdrop for a modest number of tables that were quickly filled with our supporters and patrons. Time, money and energy were saved in the planning by keeping the event focused on allowing patrons to experience and explore all the unique things that make TNP a true community theatre. Patrons were toured through all of the behind-the-scenes areas of the theatre where show-goers rarely get to see. The entertainment was a mix of musical numbers from recent shows and sneak preview of what’s to come in our 67th Season. It was heard more than once throughout the evening that the mood, setting and pace of our inaugural Front & Center Gala were a wel-

come refreshing change from similar events in town. We want to take this opportunity to thank the supporters, sponsors, staff, volunteers and committee members that made this event come to life. We are grateful for the continued generosity of our TNP community and look forward to the coming season.

The show you are about to see is a product of its time. It may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. While the following does not represent The Naples Players’ view of today’s society, this show is being presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.

And this was also the year the microchip was first developed, giving the world the very early stages of PCs.

President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law, which created NASA, a federal agency whose mission was aerospace research and the peaceful scientific applications of aeronautics.

Peace Symbol Created The peace symbol was created by British designer Gerald Holton who drew the symbol for anti-nuclear weapons protests. A prominent anti-nuclear weapons group, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), was established around the same time and adopted the peace symbol as its logo. Holton’s design, a black circle with a vertical line down the center and two downward pointing lines at 45 degree angles on either side of the center line, was never copyrighted and has since become an international symbol for worldwide peace.

HOW BYE BYE BIRDIE

Left the Nest and Took Flight Bye Bye Birdie was originally called “Let’s Go Steady.” The story, set in much simpler times…1958…was inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his 1957 draft notice for the Army. Producer Edward Padula had the idea for what he referred to as a “happy teenage musical with a difference.” He contracted with writers Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, who originally wrote seven songs for the libretto. After Fred Astaire turned down the job as director, Padula and company contacted Gower Champion to be their director/choreographer. Until then, Champion had choreographed only a few musicals. Champion didn’t like the book at all, so the writers were fired. Michael Stewart was brought in, and he wrote an early version called Love and Kisses, which had an entirely different focus. Champion still wanted ‘something more’. And that ‘something more’ was front and center, right there in virtually every newspaper: rock-and-roll idol Elvis Presley had been drafted into the Army!

In September 1957, Elvis left the US to spend 18 months in Germany, and at once became the focus of a media circus that famously included Elvis giving ‘one last kiss’ to a specially selected member of the Women’s Army Corps. EUREKA! That’s when Stewart and Adams came up with the idea of a musical based on a rock-and-roll singer who goes off to the Army and its effect on a group of teenagers in a small town in Ohio. The singer’s name initially was ‘Ellsworth’, but soon changed to Conway Twitty before the pair discovered there was already a Conway Twitty - and he was threatening to sue! They finally settled on Conrad Birdie. And the rest, as they say, is history. 40

The Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie opened in New York on April 14, 1960, at the Martin Beck Theatre, transferring to the 54th Street Theatre and then to the Shubert Theatre, closing after 607 performances. The show was produced by Edward Padula and directed and choreographed by Gower Champion, with orchestrations by Robert Ginzler, scenic design by Robert Randolph, costumes by Miles White and lighting by Peggy Clark. The original 1960 Broadway cast included Dick Van Dyke, Chita Rivera, Paul Lynde, Dick Gautier, Susan Watson, Kay Medford, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Michael J. Pollard. Reilly understudied as Albert Peterson for Van Dyke, who periodically took time off (including two weeks to film the pilot for The Dick Van Dyke Show). Chita Rivera took the role of Rosie after Carol Haney and Eydie Gorme turned it down. The musical was part of the 1961 season of the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera; and in London the musical opened in the West End at Her Majesty’s Theatre in June 1961, with Peter Marshall as Albert and Rivera once again as Rosie. That production ran for 268 performances.

Bye Bye Birdie was first adapted for film in 1963. It starred Dick Van Dyke reprising his stage role as Albert Peterson, Maureen Stapleton as Mama Mae Peterson, Janet Leigh as Rosie, Paul Lynde taking the role he played on stage as Mr. MacAfee to the silver screen, Bobby Rydell as Hugo Peabody, and Ann-Margret as Kim MacAfee. Jesse Pearson played Conrad Birdie. And Ed Sullivan makes a guest appearance as himself.

The movie is credited with making Ann-Margret a superstar in the mid-1960s, leading to her later appearance with the real Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas. (The film ranked number 38 on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 50 Best High School Movies.) An interesting sidelight: Van Dyke and other members of the Broadway production were not at all happy with the film adaptation. Van Dyke stated that the show was “a romp’” on Broadway, but the movie had been “Hollywoodized.” In fact, Susan Watson, the original Kim on Broadway, later said,

A TV-movie adaptation was produced for ABC in 1995 by RHI Entertainment. It starred Jason Alexander in the role of Albert and Vanessa Williams as Rosie. Tyne Daly played Mae Peterson. Marc Kudisch, who played Conrad Birdie on tour opposite Tommy Tune, reprised the role. Chynna Phillips played Kim MacAfee, Sally Mayes played Mrs. MacAfee, and George Wendt played Harry MacAfee. This version remained mostly faithful to the original musical. In October, 2016 NBC announced that Jennifer Lopez would star as Rosie in a television version of Bye Bye Birdie Live and Lopez would executive produce the production with her partners. This live television production has already been delayed several times due to scheduling difficulties, and as of this writing, has still not aired.

When Barbara passed in 2016, Bob continued to volunteer and serve The Naples Players as deeply as he ever had. When Bob wasn’t onstage, he volunteered behind the scenes as a spot light operator, on the backstage crew, as a sound board operator, and was a regular in the scene shop.

B

ob Hill joined The Naples Players in 2000 with his wife Barbara, with the plan to volunteer as ushers. But they jumped in with both feet and quickly became staples at The Naples Players. “The camaraderie and support of the friends at The Naples Players made my parents’ life have laughter, love, and experience lasting friendships,” remembers daughter Jennifer Hill Holterman.

64

His acting skill landed him roles in Annie Get Your Gun, Broadway Bound, Much Ado About Nothing, and for kids of all ages, as Farmer Brown in Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type; just to name a few. Perhaps his most unforgettable role was as “the stage manager” in The 1940’s Radio Hour, where Bob opened and closed the show as a curmudgeonly but lovable stage manager.

“No matter how zany the role, Bob jumped in with both feet,”

While Bob took center stage, Barbara worked behind the scenes—in life and at The Naples Players. And their children and grandchildren took note.

“My father played the butler in a murder mystery. His line was ‘Dinner is served,’ then a big bang and someone died,” Jennifer said. “Thereafter, when Mom served dinner, Dad would say ‘Dinner is served’ and all the kids would bang loudly.”

Bob’s son Andrew Hill, an area investment advisor, said that he tried to work with his father to create a legacy plan. “He kept putting it off and we never got around to it,” Andrew said. “So, when he passed without an estate plan our family had to figure things out.” Although these matters tend to be difficult for families, Andrew and his sisters knew theatre was in Bob’s heart. Making an estate gift to

THE NAPLES PLAYERS

The Naples Players was an easy decision. “We are excited to honor our father’s commitment to The Naples Players with an estate gift,” Andrew said. In turn, The Naples Players is honoring Bob by renovating and renaming the green room in his honor. Now Bob’s legacy will be enjoyed and remembered by all Naples Players taking center stage.

What’s a Dramaturg? MEET OUR SEASON CONTENT CREATOR

A literary specialist in the art or technique of dramatic composition and theatrical representation

R

icki Baker has delighted audiences this past year by curating content for our playbills as the theater’s Dramaturg. While Ricki’s contributions as a writer and dramaturg are centerfold, she herself has remained out of the theatrical limelight since an onstage experience in sixth grade. “I was in awe of the other actors and their talent,” she said. “There was an incredible difference between the art that they were creating and what I was trying to accomplish.”

“I don’t think about what people need to know,” she said. “I think about what people want to know and what will enrich their experience.” And while Ricki’s volunteerism serves to enhance the theater and enlighten the community, giving allows her to get.

“Dramaturgy indulges my passion for theatre, my curiosity.”

But Ricki still loved theatre. Rather than being discouraged by her lack of skill, Ricki resolved to participate in another way that would help the cause. “We’re called theatre rats,” she said. “That’s someone who enjoys doing any work connected with live theatre—acting, set design, lighting, stage managing, and in my case here, writing and dramaturgy.” As The Naples Players’ volunteer Dramaturg, Ricki researches each play, gathers information that she thinks audience members would like to know, and writes the content found in the program’s centerfold.

68

TNP BACKSTAGE

“This allows me the opportunity to research, explore, and play—then share my experience with others. There’s nothing like it.” Ricki’s community involvement doesn’t end with The Naples Players. She was recently elected the board chair of Naples Art (located south of The Naples Players at Cambier Park) and is known for her original abstract artwork designed to evoke or interpret live theatre— primarily Broadway musicals. On the Stage Dinner Series A DELICIOUS NEW WAY TO SUPPORT TNP

T

he expression “dinner and a show” will take on new meaning this season at The Naples Players. While patrons have long enjoyed many dinner options in downtown Naples, none have included dinner on the stage of The Naples Players—until now.

Event Dates

The On-The-Stage Dinner Series provides patrons the opportunity to enjoy world class dining on the Blackburn or Tobye stages immediately following a matinee performance. The Naples Players have partnered with Chefs Samir Canaan (Truluck’s), Vladimir Trivunovic (Ocean Prime), and Johnny Maher (Delicious by Design) to create unique culinary experiences at the theater throughout the season.

Sun., April 26th after Becky’s New Car

Each exclusive dinner is limited to just 16 patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange in their existing subscription tickets to attend the matinee performance. Cost of attendance is $150.00 per person ($55.00 of which is tax-deductible).
