T WO NIGH T S O N LY !

DEC 8&9 Naples City Council has approved The Naples Players’ (TNP) holiday production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play to be performed downtown in Cambier Park. Sponsored by Transcend Capital Advisors, this holiday classic will run for two nights only - December 8th and 9th, 2023. It’s Christmas Eve in 1946. An energetic buzz fills the studio as a cast of actors prepare for their performance of It’s a Wonderful Life with a live, listening audience - you! Described by Chicago Sun-Times as “One of the best holiday shows around. This is a fresh and inventive way of reconnecting with a classic story of love and redemption,” It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic 1946 holiday movie with a clever twist: the production is staged as a live radio broadcast. Seven actors will bring more than 40 different characters to life to share the story of George Bailey, a generous and small-town man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. It will take the help of a lovable guardian angel, Clarence, to show George a journey of redemption, proving that “no one is a failure who has friends.” Don’t miss out on the show that The Chicago Tribune stated is, “a well-loved tale told with style, charm and a heart so big it could burst the ribcage of the harshest Grinch.” and called, “a fresh theatrical context that creates just the right kind of retro warmth. If you cry every time you see the movie, you’ll be blubbering away right on cue...Guaranteed.” Performed for two nights only at 8pm on December 8th and 9th, 2023, It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play will be presented outdoors in Cambier Park while The Naples Players’ historic 5th Avenue South building undergoes a $21 million renovation. General tickets are $49, and season ticket holders are offered a price of $39. Those interested can visit NaplesPlayers.org anytime or call the TNP Box Office at (239) 263-7990.

FEATURE STORY

MEET

ERICA SAMPLE

& ADAM FASANO By Jillian Keith and Lauren Speirs

Let’s catch a dream! L-O-V-E: that spells love! Recently, Erica Sample, cast as Suzy in The Marvelous Wonderettes, had her dream wedding to volunteer and box office associate, Adam Fasano. Not only did the two meet and become friends here at The Naples Players (TNP), but their wedding featured lots of regulars as bridesmaids, groomsmen, and even the officiant! Originally a KidzAct performer, Erica Sample now volunteers as a performer, assists director/ choreographer Dawn Lebrecht Fornara on mainstage shows, and directs and choreographs children’s productions. When Adam Fasano first walked into her life - and TNP - in 2017,

he was auditioning for The Music Man and Erica was teaching the dance combination. “He caught my eye because he’s a really great dancer. At the end of the audition, he came up to me and shook my hand and said ‘thank you’ – I was impressed with his manners!”

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES

Adam and Erica were just friends for the year that followed. Adam recalls always trying to engage her in conversation - “I thought she didn’t like me.” Little did he know, Erica had a crush on him the whole time. Despite traveling back and forth from New York City, and being a snowbird at the time, Adam would frequently check in on her. When he returned to Naples the following season, he was auditioning for Guys and Dolls and she was performing in White Christmas. “After auditions, I was sticking around to hang out with her and the staff were saying, ‘Adam you can go home, you’re good.’” She then invited him to see her in White Christmas and things took a turn! “An older gentleman and I were on the waitlist for tickets that night and I remember he told me it was the only night he could see the show. We were waiting by the box office and they called my name for a ticket,” says Adam, “I was about to give him my ticket because I knew it was the only opportunity for him to go and this gentleman put his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Enjoy your show.’” This kind act from a stranger changed the course of history for Adam and Erica. “Essentially, that night we started dating,” says Erica.

show instead of being in the moment,” remembers Erica, “It was really fun as he was staying for the summer instead of going back to NYC so we were excited. It brought us closer - it was a really special show. Those castmates will be at our real wedding because we were so close.” Fast forward to now and Erica says, “There’s a lot of side stories to tell when talking about our proposal! I love Dawn and Charlie (Charles Fornara, the Music Director of The Marvelous Wonderettes)’s backyard so much, so Adam was waiting for me there after Something Rotten! Teen auditions. My mom and I also own an animal rescue and one of Dawn and Charlie’s neighbors called about rescuing kittens. I had no idea Adam was waiting for me so I went to go talk to the neighbor and it took longer than expected. Charlie came by to get me saying to me (continued on page 20)

Before popping the question in real life, Erica and Adam played opposite each other in Mamma Mia! as Sophie and Sky. “Dawn said, ‘You guys are dating and you have no chemistry.’ Sophie and Sky are totally in love and we just weren’t there yet so we were a bit awkward! We were also trying to concentrate on learning the

Finally, back on track with the secret plan, the gang headed toward the garden where Adam was waiting (for what seemed like an eternity). Erica says, “he came out from behind a tree with a rose and said some wonderful things and it’s all a blur after that! Our song was playing and he got down on one knee.”

PERFORMERS

She said ‘yes!’ and all of us at TNP could not be happier for this special couple. Erica says, “If it wasn’t for this place, we would not have met, become friends, and gotten to know each other.” Adam adds, “I feel like this place gives people a chance. I struggled with a lot of relationships before Erica. TNP opened the door for me to fall in love again. You’re surrounded by love everywhere you go here - specifically with Dawn and Charlie, but from the whole TNP family as well.”

Fly rail, audio assistant, backstage crew, spotlight operator, board operator...the behind-the-scenes opportunities at TNP are endless!

Congratulations on your wedding, Erica and Adam!

Memories are made of this:

PROM

Virtually anyone who has ever graduated from high school in the United States has a prom story. What’s yours? High school proms go back to the late 19th and early 20th century in the US. and are believed to have evolved from formal debutante balls and college promenades. The word prom is indeed an abbreviation of promenade, referring to a stroll in a public place for pleasure or display. And the word promenade itself comes from the French verb meaning “to walk (leisurely).”

did invited or W ere yo u e inviting ? yo u do th ve a great Did yo u ha as yo ur pro m time or w aster? nig ht a dis r w h at Re me mbe? yo u wore

Would you rather have been with someone else? Would you rather have stayed home?

At first, proms were held at colleges and universities so students could socialize and make connections. By the early 1900s, proms had become a common feature on high school social calendars across the country, gaining in popularity until they became an annual tradition for graduating seniors. Proms typically feature formal attire - tuxedos and gowns - and often feature elaborate decorations, music, dancing, and the crowning of a prom king and queen. Historically, high school proms were a way to introduce young people to formal events and to teach them some etiquette. Today, proms are seen as significant milestones in many students’ lives, symbolizing the end of their high school journey and their transition to adulthood. While specific customs and traditions may vary from school to school and region to region, proms continue to be widely celebrated as memorable, special events.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES

And the Beat Goes On There have been three sequels to The Marvelous Wonderettes. The first, Winter Wonderettes, was presented in November 2003 at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. The show includes all four girls and places them at Harper’s Hardware where Betty Jean has worked since high school. The girls have created a winter wonderland within the store for the 1968 holiday party. The evening includes some favorite holiday songs, including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” and “Winter Wonderland.” The second sequel, Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns, premiered at the Laguna Playhouse. In the first act, the four characters are graduating from Springfield High, and the second shows Missy and Mr. Lee’s wedding reception. Songs from the 1950s are featured in the first act and from the 1960s in the second. The third sequel (final installment) of the Wonderettes is Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On. In the first act, the characters perform at their teacher’s retirement party. The second act shows the girls at their 20-year class reunion singing songs from the 1970’s.

The Jukebox Musical…

revisited Most of us have seen at least one, if not more, of this relatively new theater genre…a stage presentation or film featuring songs of popular music acts. The leads of Jukebox Musicals are typically played by actors singing new renditions of the real artist’s previously recorded songs woven into a dramatic plot—sometimes, but not always, a biographical story about the recording artist(s). A Jukebox Musical is different from a musical revue. The former pairs pre-existing songs with a full-fledged story, while the latter functions as a “greatest hits” showcase for a particular songwriter or era.

28

BACKSTAGE

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES

Though Jukebox Musicals had success for years (notably Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story which enjoyed a 13-year run in London’s West End from 1989 – 2003), the huge surge in the popularity of the genre was led by Mamma Mia! which also has been seen as a great introduction to musical theater as it opened a door to younger theatergoers. Sometimes dismissed by “serious” critics and theatergoers, Jukebox Musicals remain hugely popular. Ben Brantley, chief theater critic of The New York Times since 1996, calls himself “a secret fan” of Mamma Mia!, writing that the show, “spoke to the way such songs become the soundtracks of our minds and lives.” And it certainly seems that these so-called “hybrids of pop nostalgia and theatrical sawdust” are here to stay.
