Handsome Vernon Kay is an unusual crossbreed, Kangal with probably Labrador we believe, so quite a large dog when fully grown. Vernon is just over a year old and we are impressed by his lead manners and knowledge of basic commands. A Kangal is a guarding breed and we would expect any potential owner to have done some research on the breed and be willing to carry on with his training. Vernon is affectionate and sweet-natured, we think he would live with a female dog pending introductions. Any children 10+.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Stephen Moon it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for

a number of years. In addition since starting the business in 2005, Cloudy2Clear have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

Hospice at Home Volunteers support to clients and carers where life limiting illnesses impact their day-to-day lives. Our volunteers are fully trained in providing support to clients with a wide range of needs and spend over 1000 hours per year visiting clients in their own homes.

The service is headed up by two paid members of staff. We have a Manager and deputy who ensure all volunteers are trained and supported during their visits, and regular contact is maintained. Our policy and procedures are robustly managed, and health and safety is regularly reviewed to ensure all parties are safe in the work that they do across the community. All volunteers are DBS checked. We work closely with a wide range of support services, medical teams and social prescribers to ensure our services are widely known about and new referrals are received.

We are often asked “how much does it cost to run the charity?”

An average year for the charity’s running costs is approx. £25,000. We work hard to keep costs to a minimum, but recognise the invaluable work of our volunteers and seek to reimburse them their expenses.

We work hard to raise the money needed to maintain the services we deliver. We engage with potential funding streams, submit grant applications, and seek donations. That’s alongside organising a number of fundraising events each year.

We maintain our relationships with Mount Vernon Cancer Care and receive a small annual grant from them. We are currently in receipt of a four year service level agreement from Dunstable Town Council. These are our only two guaranteed income streams at present.

Fundraising is critical to our existence and throughout 23/24 we raised in excess of £8000 through our own fundraising activities, and received a further £4000 in donations. Where necessary we draw on our reserves to help manage our costs.

In 2025 we are extremely grateful for a number of local businesses and groups who have agreed to support us as a charity this year.

Beansprout Accountancy Ltd, Medical Emergency Solutions (MES) and Community Interest Luton CIC via Mostaque Koyes have all designated 2025 as their year to support Hospice at Home Volunteers. They are all holding events helping to raise vital funding to support our charity.

We have planned a year of events ourselves and you are all invited to be part of these – you can find out more about the events via our Facebook page Hospice at Home Volunteers - Dunstable & Houghton Regis areas or website www.hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk

If you are in a position to support us financially you can do so via GO FUND ME : Hospice at Home Volunteers, Dunstable, Houghton Regis and making a donation, or by attending one of our future events.

Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.”
Mark Twain

Have you ever said, “That has to be too good to be true!”?

It is a phrase which slips out every now and then. We sometimes say it out of sceptical exasperation or out of marvelled wonder as we behold something that makes our minds boggle.

In today’s world, we have to be appropriately cautious when something appears that sounds too good to be true. Every year at our Connect group for over 60s, we run a morning warning the group about the latest scams. Why? Because it’s important! If we’re not careful we can easily get caught out in a ‘too good to be true’ situation that really was too good to be true.

But that doesn’t mean that every good deal is a ruse out to get us. We wouldn’t want to miss out on something genuine. So, to discern the good from the bad it is good for us to go into detective mode. We test the offer, we read the reviews, we check Trustpilot and Which? for advice. Doing this saves us from getting caught out, but it also helps us benefit from hitting the jackpot of the real deal!

Naturally, the subject of truth is important to us in all areas of life, including the area of faith. People often speak of blind faith, which is faith without reason. But my own view as a Christian is that the Bible doesn’t expect any faith to be like that. John, one of Jesus’ followers, often uses the term ‘we know’ as he writes a letter to the church.

He says,

“We know, we know, we know, we know!”

(See 1 John 2:3; 3:16-20; 4:16; 5:19)

How can he be so convinced? Well, we can know that too! In the historical book of Acts, we see Peter and John arrested for speaking about Jesus. They are punished and given a severe warning to stop talking about Jesus to which they reply, “We are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” They have experienced these things. It isn’t blind faith but lived experience. They know it’s true, and to pretend it isn’t would be to suppress the truth.

They knew that Jesus was the real deal. As God in flesh, Jesus provided a way for us to be reconciled to a loving God that we have rejected and ignored. Verifiable history attests that eyewitnesses say Jesus truly died on a cross yet was seen truly living again just days later. The Bible explains these facts. Jesus did this to pay for the cost of our rejection, which is death, and to offer to us life in him. Glen Scrivener says, “Jesus takes on our failures, so that we can join his family.”

If this is a genuine offer, it would truly be a shame to miss it. I encourage you to discover the truth about what happened during those Easter days.

Jesus says,

“You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

I recently met the Policing Minister, and I am pleased that Bedfordshire Police’s budget is increasing to £167 million which will help strengthen neighbourhood policing.

I spoke out in Parliament about the menace of off-road bikes. Many local people have got in touch with me about balaclava-wearing riders doing wheelies and going the wrong way down one-way streets. So I support plans to give police the power to seize illegal bikes on the spot. That's part of a package of 50 new crime-fighting laws I will be voting for soon. It will introduce Respect Orders to ban persistent anti-social offenders from town centres and close a loophole that currently allows shoplifters to avoid prosecution if they steal goods worth under £200. Plus, attacking a shopworker will become a standalone criminal offence - a change I promised White Lion Retail Park staff I’d push for.

NHS:

I welcome the Government's £750,000 boost in funding for public health across Central Bedfordshire to support services including school nurses and schemes to help people quit smoking. It is the biggest real terms increase in nearly a decade. The Government has also announced over 6,000 additional emergency NHS dental appointments for the Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes area. While rebuilding the system won’t happen overnight, I am encouraged that the Government is taking these desperately needed first steps.

Fixing Potholes:

ensuring the full uplift in funding is directed towards road repairs. I am disappointed by this. It was clearly not the intention of government, not what residents want, and I fear could make future such grants less likely.

Improving Transport:

As a member of Parliament’s Transport Select Committee, I’m working to make getting from A to B easier. I successfully pushed for an inquiry into bus services outside major cities. I also secured a commitment from the DVSA to tackle long driving test waiting times after one local person was told they needed to wait an entire year.

Potholes remain a major issue. The Government has increased funding to Central Bedfordshire to over £9.6 million, the equivalent of more than 20,000 extra potholes being filled. However unfortunately the Council has chosen not to commit to

The Robber Dun Fact or Fiction?

Many people in Dunstable think they know all about the character Dun, and a certain fondness for him has grown up. For example, it is popularly thought that the town is named after him and that he had some form of underground stabling somewhere near the cross roads. This myth can be shot down for at least two good reasons :-

1) The original name of the town was Dunestaple, not Dunstable, and

2) it is highly unlikely that anyone with a price on his head would choose to stable his horses in full view of all and sundry in the centre of town. A story - another myth ? - with rather more plausibility is that the founder of the town, King Henry 1st in the early 1100s, became increasingly concerned regarding the general mayhem caused by Dun and his band of brigands as meted out to travellers through, and visitors to his new town - many of whom would be burgesses engaged on important business within the town. Such robbery, maimingeven murder - was clearly very bad publicity and Henry was determined to rid the area of this particular plague.

So - the story goes - he erected a large pillar - a stake (or staple) - in the centre of town and placed a valuable ring on top. He issued a challenge to Dun saying that if he could steal this ring without being caught by the soldier on guard, he could keep it. For some days, nothing happened and the guard was getting bored so, on one late afternoon, he was quite happy to chat with a crippled old lady who was passing. But after a little while, this crippled old crone suddenly became very sprightly indeed, slashed the soldier’s throat, shinned up the pillar and stole the ring! This story might give some degree of credibility to the possible name Dunstaple (which is very close) and, to this day, the town’s arms show a pointed stake with ring

attached. So is there any truth to this account? We shall never know of course - but it’s a good yarn. So, if Dun actually existed, who might he have been and why should he have become an outlaw? The likely suggestion is that he might have been a descendent - a son? - of a dispossessed local Saxon landowner who had lost both his title and lands during the Norman Conquest; and that Dun never regained his family status and so turned against anything remotely Norman as an act of vengeance. Since Dunestaple was the brainchild of the Norman King Henry 1st, what further excuse did he need? In essence, he became Dunestaple’s equivalent of Ely’s Hereward the Wake as a Norman antagonist.

There are numerous stories about Dun but only one treats him as a Robin Hood figure who fostered those fallen foul of the law for no fault of their own. He sheltered them in his refuge in the dense woodlands bordering the Watling Street of the time - shades of Sherwood Forest! But by far the considerable majority of stories treat Dun as a robber, a villian and a murderer who, with his gang, hid out in the surrounding woodland and attacked almost anyone who happened to travel their way. If the traveller emerged at all, he would have lost whatever valuables he had and frequently an ear or a hand, or, perhaps, he could even have lost his life.

But the Robber Dun of myth and fantasy has, unfortunately, been elevated in popular imagination to the status of “loveable rogue” - similar to that of the Great Train Robbers or the Kray twins. However, if he did exist, I can imagine that “loveable” would be the last word to describe him.

As a footnote, a truer, but less “exciting” explanation

for the name Dunestaple (which gradually evolved via Dunstaple into Dunstable) is that the name comes from two Saxon words :- Dune (meaning “hill”; hence the modern word “down” as in Dunstable Downs) and Staple (meaning “market”). Dunestaple could therefore have originally meant “the market in the hills” and alluded to the fact that a daily market was held at a town surrounded by hills.

Yet another - and totally different - story comes from the 13th century when a canon at the Priory invented this myth based upon the original coat of arms for the town. They show a black background which allows a pun on the word Dun - the first syllable in the town’s name - since dun is an old English word meaning black. The triangular “pile” refers to both “Staple” (meaning “market”) and “Stapel” (ie the pointed stakes which delineated market places in those days).

These arms also show an inverted golden horseshoe representing a “cup of good cheer” and good luck for Henry’s new town and a golden ring (or amulet) signifying royal favour and protection. Both of these were woven into the canon’s myth as something worthy of robber Dun’s close attention.

So it’s more likely that the name of the town had nothing to do with a real robber Dun but that the myth of this robber Dun had everything to do with the name of the town and its arms. A nice volte-face.

Willow Charcoal Trees

Rub your charcoal on one spot to create a source on a scrap piece of paper. Get a soft tissue and dab it into your charcoal source. Now, on a clean sheet of A5 paper gently cover it with the charcoal in circular motions. Create a light grey tone. Once covered get a clean rubber and begin drawing the shape of your trees to resemble white lines. Now, break a piece of charcoal in half to get a sharp edge and draw around your trees (gentle lines). Then begin adding darker tones in the darker areas (including the foreground). You should have 3 tones, light, medium & dark. Using a black pen add in your thin branches. Remove charcoal and add it in the appropriate areas.

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Looking Up!

April & May 2025

Last Chance to See Jupiter Before the Summer:

Early April sees Jupiter still bright in the sky towards the west at nightfall. The biggest planet in our solar system is easy to identify, it being the brightest star-like object currently visible once dark. Through the month Jupiter is found lower towards the western horizon each night, eventually being swallowed up by the growing twilight come mid-May. On 30th April at about 9:30pm Jupiter sits beneath a crescent moon making for a lovely view.

Watch Venus Emerge as the Morning Star:

Venus has given us a spectacular evening display over the last few months. At the end of March it slipped out of view between us and the Sun on its 225-day orbit. By mid-April it emerges in the morning sky ahead of sunrise as an intensely bright star-like object low to the eastern horizon just ahead of dawn’s light. Venus at this point is still close to us at about 55 million kilometres away. That is near enough to see Venus as a thin crescent phase in binoculars and telescopes.

“The rise of Islam” by Michael Williams

The rise of Islam is among the most momentous episodes in history. More permanently than the barbarian invasions it marked an end to the classical civilization of the Greeks and Romans by dividing the Mediterranean world. It destroyed the empire of Persia. The lecture begins with the ancient world before the rise of Islam. It seeks to explain the speed of the Arab conquests and the division between Sunni and Shia. It tells the story of the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphs and the role of Persians and Turks in shaping the Muslim world. It concludes by considering the parallel emergence of Western European civilization in the era of Charlemagne and by comparing Caliphs and Carolingians.

Sessions will be held 10.30 to 12.30 in The Pioneer (lower) Hall, Manchester Place, Dunstable. The price for each talk is £7.50 and includes a beverage and piece of cake.
