PHILANTHROPY OR CHARITY
According to the Dictionary, charity and philanthropy are two different things. CHARITY Charity is the voluntary giving of help, typically money, to those that are suffering or in need. It tends to address an immediate problem and is a compassionate response to a natural disaster, or a token of support for the victim of crime or violence, for example. Charity can also address immediate needs for food, shelter or medical care. It is a short term response, although one may give frequently to a particular cause.
PHILANTHROPY Philanthropy is more strategic in that it seeks to root out causes of the problem and to develop long term solutions. Striving for long term solutions to problems such as addiction, housing shortages, or hunger takes time, study, and planning. This is where charity comes in, providing direct relief for people in immediate need.

also may offer some additional advantages. For example, a qualified charity may receive your IRA with no tax consequences since charities do not pay taxes. Appreciated assets are also beneficial as a gift to a charity, as capital gains tax can be avoided.
Both charity and philanthropy possess the same goals of addressing needs and making the world a better place but with different approaches. One deals with direct relief and the other with root causes and finding solutions. Is one better than the other? Of course not! They are just two different ways of solving problems and both are essential to the functioning of a decent society. Recently, there have been changes to the tax code regarding charitable giving. Three Acts have been passed recently - The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA), the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE) and the Corona Virus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES). All have some impact on deductibility of charitable contributions. They
8
Another way to contribute is through a community foundation, which is a grant making public charity that is dedicated to improving lives in a particular community. Individuals, families, businesses and non-profit groups establish funds within the foundation in which they can contribute assets for charitable purposes. The foundation manages the assets and takes suggestions from those that set up the fund on how and where to distribute the resources. There are over 700 community foundations in the United States. Whether one chooses charity or philanthropy, the ultimate goal is to help the community by using personal skills and resources to make a difference.

INTERIOR DESIGN
2021
Due to the events of 2020, people have more interest than ever in the design of their home environment. Being at home more means lots of lifestyle adjustments and being able to use space for multiple reasons is now imperative. It also makes us more aware of our surroundings. Whether it’s more comfort for all that zoom time, a functioning home office, craft room or remote learning space, adjustments need to be made. Zoom has become an integral part of most peoples’ lives as a way to maintain businesses and family relationships which means the right space for it is needed. It might be the office, dining room or even a comfortable

couch, but it’s recommended that the space faces a window for natural lighting. Try to avoid the bedroom. Have the camera slightly above eye level and consider the background. Bookshelves are nice as well, or a favorite painting – and the background color should complement one’s skin tone as well. If a designated office is now needed, a bedroom or extra closet can be converted with the installation of a built-in desk and shelves. The garage may be available for a craft room. In the end, it’s all about flexibility in these stay-at-home times. One simple way to make changes is thru the use of color. This year Pantone has named two colors to its yearly color of the year award - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.
12
These are certainly appropriate choices for the year as they complement each other. Gray represents neutrality and balance and yellow represents the sun and sunflowers and is a happy color full of hope and positivity which is surely needed right now. It is easy to use these colors to brighten up a room without major expense. Accessories also are an easy way to add color and change an area’s vibe. New pillows, area rugs, throw blankets, or wall art will also freshen up any space. Start small and if the change is pleasing, continue on. Another easy change is adding selfadhesive removable wallpaper. It is great for a bathroom or closet and if it gets tiresome, it is easily removed.

Living walls are a new concept for residential use. Bring nature indoors with a wall of edible or decorative plants. They contribute to improved indoor air quality and people are happier, healthier and less stressed when surrounded by plants. If not quite ready for a living wall, just adding some plants or native orchids can make a huge difference. The most important design trends for 2021 are to make one’s home environment functional and comfortable for all the activities happening there.

DO YOU HAVE AN UP-TO-DATE
ESTATE PLAN?
The first thing to understand is that writing a will and having an estate plan are actually two different processes, even though an estate plan will include a will.
Wills Creating a will can be a fairly simple process. It will address who will take care of your children, who will take over your business, and who receives your assets and other personal property. A will requires the naming of an executor responsible for fulfilling the deceased’s wishes. Having one’s wishes defined in a will ensures privacy, helps avoid family disputes and saves money by avoiding probate and the expense of attorneys and public trustees to determine the distribution of assets which then becomes public information.
Estate Planning Estate planning is the process of designating who will manage and distribute assets after death or incapacitation. It is a more intensive process and includes a variety of documents including the last will and testament. While it may be overwhelming to contemplate, a well-designed estate plan will ensure that assets are distributed according to one’s wishes. In addition to the last will and testament, 16

an estate plan might include a living will, a financial power of attorney, a living trust, and beneficiary designations. An estate plan can be particularly helpful in the case of multiple marriages, business ownership, specific charitable donations, or specific requests for health or property. It can also ensure wishes are carried out and that assets are distributed as designated.
Living Will A living will is a document that describes the type of care one would want if incapacitated and cannot speak for themself. This can assist the family with difficult decisions and avoid confusion. A financial power of attorney allows for a designated appointee to handle financial affairs in the event of incapacitation. They can make financial decisions in accordance with the instructions defined in the estate plan.
Living Trust A living trust is a document created during one’s life where a designated person, the trustee, is given responsibility for managing that individual’s assets for the benefit of the eventual beneficiary. It is designed to allow for the easy transfer of assets, thereby avoiding probate. A living revocable trust allows someone to be their own trustee and allows for changes in beneficiary at any time. An

irrevocable living trust is restrictive, and beneficiaries may not be changed but there are certain beneficial tax consequences. Beneficiary designations explain who receives which assets such as an IRA, insurance policy, savings account, or other financial instruments. A well-executed estate plan can minimize gift, estate and generation skipping transfer taxes to ensure that the family receives as much of the deceased’s estate as possible. Everyone’s plan is different and requires the right team of professionals to implement. It is also important to update the plan regularly as personal circumstances, legislation, and tax laws change frequently.

TRENDING LOCATIONS TO VISIT THIS YEAR
TRAVEL IN 2021
2021 may be the time to “see the USA”, as international air travel will be determined by individual countries’ rules and re-openings. One can avoid airports and air travel by simply hitting the road. Vans and recreational vehicles have achieved widespread use in the last year and there is no shortage of great domestic destinations. See the Great Lakes Region in the north or explore the music cities of New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville in the south!
NORTHERN ROAD TRIP The Great Lakes area is an excellent place to start. From east to west, these lakes (Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior) span the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Great Lakes are the five largest interconnected lakes in the US and contain the largest freshwater supply in the

world supplying water to more than 40 million people. Unique to these lakes are rolling waves, strong currents, miles of sandy and rocky beaches and distant horizons. Attractions include great beaches, Niagara Falls, wildlife areas, charming small towns, large cities and many National parks. And for sports fans, there are magnificent stadiums and arenas for all major sports

leagues as well as for the Big Ten universities. Lake Erie, in New York is known for its reputed Loc-Ness-like sea monster which has reportedly been seen many times over the years. The US side of Niagara Falls is not to be missed either with breathtaking waterfalls and rapids. Michigan, which touches four of the five Great Lakes and possesses the longest fresh water coastline in the world, is host to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan’s western shore. It is home to the largest freshwater sand dunes in the world. The tallest sand dune

at Sleeping Bear stands at 450 feet above the shore. In addition to sand dunes, Lake Michigan has a “Bermuda Triangle” where many strange occurrences have been reported: unexplained ship disappearances and missing planes as well as a Stonehengelike rock formation underwater near Traverse City. With some luck, one might even see a few black bears. Chicago, which is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, has it all - a big city with museums, restaurants and nightlife as well as Lake Shore Drive, a 15 mile urban parkway of green spaces and beaches along the lake. A road trip would provide a 49

fascinating and fun packed trip for any age group. Do the entire route from one end to the other or pick a particular lake area to concentrate on. With so many historic sights and national park areas, there are opportunities to appreciate all the diversity of our great country.
SOUTHERN ROAD TRIP New Orleans, on the Mississippi River, which is the “jazz capital of the world” and nicknamed the “Big Easy”. Visit the French Quarter and walk along Bourbon Street with its colorful buildings with cast iron balconies, fine Cajun restaurants, antique shops, and art galleries. Enjoy the street performers at Jackson Square in front of the famous Saint Louis Cathedral. From there, take the trolley out to the Garden District with its well preserved collection of historic homes from the 18th century. In addition, there is the New Orleans Zoo and Aquarium and be sure to visit the World War ll Museum. There is much to see and learn in New Orleans. Memphis Tennessee, which is known as the “Home of the Blues and Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and famous for gospel, jazz, R&B, rap and soul as well. A must stop is Graceland, Elvis Presley’s mansion. In addition, there is the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, Blues Hall of Fame, and the Stax Museum of Soul Music. And for foodies, Memphis has a vibrant and diverse restaurant scene but

is best known for its slow-cooked dry rib barbecue ribs, maple bacon doughnuts and local coffee roasters. Nashville, which is the capital of Tennessee, and home to Vanderbilt University. It is often referred to as Music City. Visit the Grand Ole Opry, The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Ryman Auditorium. All are well known for Country Music. Besides the live music scene, there are interesting historic neighborhoods with boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops. For some history, visit the home of President Andrew Jackson, considered to be the best preserved of all presidential homes, or Belle Meade Plantation which was part of the Battle for Nashville during the Civil War. There are so many choices for travel - whether looking for great views, live entertainment, or cultural and historic sites, we can find it all here in the USA.

2021
After a year of staying in the house, wearing sweats and other assorted quarantine gear, it is time for a change. Many are now finally ready to dress up, even while still wearing masks and social distancing. Break out all of those accessories that piled up from months of online shopping. Nobody will judge if you overaccessorize. The new year brings changing trends in jewelry, both traditional and avant-garde. Pearls have always been in, but we are now seeing more of the freshwater variety. They have a more contemporary look. From pearl drop earrings to layered necklaces that mix

pearls with other materials, pearls work for all occasions. There are also personalized extra-long pendant necklaces and charm bracelets. Colorful beads are always a hit, whether worn as earrings, necklaces, or bracelets. Chain link necklaces and bracelets with attached charms are also hot at the moment. And feel free to

stack rings on a couple fingers while you’re at it! A brand new trend is mismatched earrings or simply wearing one dramatic shoulder grazing earring. Of course two shoulder length earrings also work. Mixing and matching different textures is also very popular. Instead of smooth gold hoops, go for a textured pair in silver; silver has made a huge comeback. Several top designers have moved towards mini handbags recently, often on long chains. They can even be worn as a necklace. And of course, let’s not forget about diamonds. They remain at the top of the food chain. Just ask Marilyn Monroe -“Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”. Hair ornaments of all sizes

can make a powerful fashion statement. There are a multitude of choices from traditional headbands to pearl hairpins or hair clips, barrettes, and even scrunchies. They come in a variety of fabrics from velvet to fur to leather. Most popular are headbands embellished with pearls, rhinestones or feathers. You’ll always look chic with a headband! Regardless of individual style, all can agree – now is the time to shine!
