To Ko5 i ntel l ectual s , who had been embi ttered by the l oss of rea ・ their soverei gnty ,this theory was a wel come source of national pride. tI meant that ,duri ng the Silla era ,the Korean peopl e had successful l y built an astronomical observatory , whi ch utilized astronomical apparat us ,such as the armil lary sphere ,to observe the heavens. Thereafter ,Cheomseongdae came to be hi ghl y val ued by Koreans as a notewort hy achi evement of Korea' s tradi ti onal sci ence. But just how effective woul d ti have been to conduct astronomical observati on by ascendi ng a t ower that stood 10 met ers hi gh on flat l and? Thi s f undamentei l questi on began to rai se consi derabl e doubt due to the l ack of a cl ear expl anati on. A key factor behi nd the

Al t hough ti failed to attract the attenti on of hi stori ans ,Cheomseongdae was cited a f ewt i mes in geographi cal su刊 eys undertaken duri ng the J oseon Dynast y (1392-1910). Thi s i ncl uded the first descri pti on of its functi on,whi ch stated that peopl e woul d ascend the t ower to observe the heavenl y ski es . Apart f romthis ,several poems have been wri tten about Cheomseongdae ,i ncl udi ng those by J eong Mong- j u (1337-1392). the renowned schol ar of the late Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). and vari ous literati of the earl y J oseon Dynasty. Still ,the dearth of detai l ed references to Cheomseongdae in Korea' s vol umi nous hi stori cal document s causes many to wonder about its actual si gni fi cance. Then, how is possi bl e to separate fact f romfiction,in regard to CheomseongdaeつAl t hough muc h is difficult to ascertai n,ti is cl ear that duri ng the Three Ki ngdoms period, when Silla vi ed for hegemony over Goguryeo ( ~ 7 B,C.A.
