I n mo d mt i m民 it is no m悦 coi nci dence that Kor ean 1i terature has exerted such a pervasi ve i nfl uence on the peop1e of Korea. Kor ean soci ety has propel l ed itself f orward t hrough the t urbu1ence of J apanese co1oni a1 ru1e,nati ona1 di vi si on,mi1i tary di ctatorshi p,and a 1engt hy strugg1e for democracy. Al 1 this whi 1e,Kor ean 1i terature has p1ayed a uni que socia1 ro1e in the everyday 1ives of peop1e by offeri ng i nsi ght i nto the reality of the ti m es. However , recent trends i ndi cate that Korean 1iterature' s previ ous pr omi nence has been erod ed. As Korea embraces an age characteri zed by capi ta1i sm,an i nf ormat i on soci ety,and masscent ered soci ety ,1i terature has been movi ng away 企o mthe parti cul ars of the Kor ean situati on t owar d the uni versa1i ty of a gl oba1i zed worl d. For examp1e, young Kor ean wri ters t end to focus on the a1i enati on of margi nal i zed i ndi vi dua1s and the phenomena of “ fl ashy medi a capi tal i sm .)) J eon Apart f r omthese recent literary trends , Sung Tae stands out 仕o mthe crowd. ance of the tradi ti ona1 worl d of Korea. Tradi ti ona1 rura1 vi l l ages ,wher e the emot i ons and 1ives of peop1e are cl osel y i ntertwi ned,are gradual l y dyi ng out because of the re1entl ess advance of i ndustri al i zati on and capi ta1i sm . As for J eon, he seeks to revea1 the genui ne humani t y of 札11age resi dents. Thi s tradi ti ona1 rea1m,despi te its gracefu1 sp1endor and abundance, no 10nger seems re1evant to present - day Korea. Nonet hel ess ,J eon fai thful l y reproduces the tradi ti onal senti ments and ri chness of the 1anguage,whi l e at the same t i me astute1y observi ng our current condi ti ons. As such, his wor k does not 1ean on a sense of nosta1gi a al one. I ndeed, his recent wor k strives to di ssect the underl yi ng confl i cts and concerns of cont empor ar y Kor ean soci ety. He careful l y calls attenti on to such i ssues as nati ona1 di vi si on, as wel l as the remnant s of our mil i tary'cu1ture and co1oni a1 past that still can be seen in today' s society. For examp1e, in the title story of his Border Crossi ng ant ho1ogy, he de1ves i nto the border-rel ated anxi ety that afflicts the peop1e of a di vi ded country. He cont emp1at es the rea1ity of di vi si on,whi ch is engraved i n the peop1e' s subconsci ous. “ The Forest of Exi stence)) is a short story that can be sai d to encompass the enti re spect rumof J eon' s 1iterary career. The protagoni st is a come- . di an who want s to m北 e peop1e 1augh and cry at his satirical wi t , but he is a failure. T o gather stories that he can use as materi a1 for his wor k,he spends t i me at a mount ai n village. Her e,he lis tens to the stori es to1d by the e1derl y villagers. Thi s r emot e count ry vi l l age,whi ch the young peop1e have abandoned for the city,is a typi ca1

.

exampl e of the dyi ng rural communi t y that the comedi an has adopt ed for his subj ect mat t er. Above all , he di scovers that the words of vill agers are ri ch and vi brant ,wi t h col orf ul met aphors that have been gradual l y i mbedded in their everyday l anguage. I ndeed, this di al ect is a medi umfor descri bi ng the life experi ences of the rural village. The l anguage of this c ommuni ty wel l surpasses the l i ngui sti c real mof the comedi an, whose professi on calls for the cl ever usage of words. In this short story, the aut hor offers a masterful account of a tradi ti onal rural village, in regard to its vitality of nature, peopl e' s real-life experi ences , and their uni que language. The story f eatures muc h mor e t han t he everyday life of a tradi ti onal communi t y and the ri chness of their l anguage. Real i ty is ever present in this mount ai n village,t hough it seems to be cut off f r omcont emporary society. For example, there is a Nor t h Korean spy-reporti ng incident ,the result of the ant i communi st i deol ogy that once engul f ed soci ety,and changes to the village brought about by the constructi on of a nearby gol f course. But the most telling re1 f ec ti on of cont emporarγl i f e can be f ound in the fact that the protagoni st is a comedi an whose “ weapons" i ncl ude pol i ti cal sati re and soci al criticism . He seeks to pi erce the heart of soci ety wi t h the sharpness of his satire, but his wor ds al ways missed the mar k. Thi s can be seen as an i ndi rect comment ar y of the aut hor on the state of soci ety: true cri ti ci smcannot be achi eved wi t h superfi ci al wor ds , but onl y wi t h l anguage that is rooted in everyday life. In an effort to hone hi s sati ri cal wi t ,the comedi an seeks out thi s vi l l age deep i n the

mount ai ns , whi ch seems r emoved f r omthe real worl d. There, wor ds and life c ome together and enhance each other to create a uni que wor l d wi t h a ri ch l anguage that natural l y i ntegrates the goi ngs- on there. Thi s is evi denced by the i magi nary experi ences of the protagoni s t. The woma n f r omthe ti n- roof ed house who passes by hi s house is the el derl y Yeokkol daek, who went i nsane and di ed a l ong t i me ago, but remai ns a central fi gure in the stori es tol d by the el derl y women. The l ong- t i me resi dents of the vi l l age no doubt deepl y underst ood the ext reme hardshi p and sorrow of her life. As such, thei r l anguage enabl es t hemto over come their own di 伍cul t l i ves ,whi l e r ecount i ng t he t ragedy of Yeokkol daek. The power of stori es , therefore, comes not f r omthe wor ds but f r omthe life experi ence. Thanks to its vi brant l anguage and tight composi ti on, ‘ ' The Forest of Exi stence" is a del i ghtful story. It starts wi t h words and progresses to the darkness of life. It deal s wi t h the agony of wri ti ng and the ecstasy of its compl et i on. It is not a conceptual i nterpretati on of wor ds or a eul ogy to a dyi ng tradi ti onal soci ety,but a story wi t h a uni que take on reality. J eon's recent works are al ong these lines. Hi s eff Ol ts to fi nd the l anguage that can convey the real life of cont empor ar y ti mes enabl e hi mto i denti 命the vari ous barri ers of Korean society. Onl y when wor ds ref1ect an underst andi ng of the l ong- ago di gni ty of life can a story be assured of its rel evancy. "The Forest of Exi stence" i ntroduces readers to the beaut y of the Kor ean l anguage and the l ament of di sappeari ng tradi ti ons ,as wel l as the arti stry of weavmg m cont emporary lssues. 国 Wi nter 2007 I Koreana 87
