용공주와 세 개의 알 The Naga Princess and Her Three Eggs
아주 먼 옛날, 미얀마 북부의 산속 호수에 아름다운 용공주가 살았어요. 용공주는 햇살이 따스하게 내리쬐는 날이면 은색 비늘을 반짝이며 물 위로 나오곤 했답니다.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful naga princess, who lived in the deep of a lake hidden away in the mountains of northern Burma. On sunlight days, the Princess would reveal a gleam of her shiny, silver scales.
마침내 어느 날, 바깥세상에 대한 호기심이 가득했던 공주는 윤기 흐르는 검은 머리카락을 가진 어여쁜 소녀의 모습을 하고 호수 위로 올라갔어요. 하늘에서 지켜보던 태양신이 반할 정도로 무척이나 아름다웠답니다.
The Princess was curious of the outside world. Finally, one day, she magically transformed herself into a girl with silky, dark hair and surfaced from the lake. Just as she was a lovely naga, she was a beautiful maiden – so beautiful in that the Sun God, who watched over her from the sky, fell in love with her.
태양신은 힘센 사냥꾼의 모습으로 공주 앞에 나타났어요. 그는 대나무 피리를 연주하고 재주를 부리며 그녀를 기쁘게 해 주었고 공주도 재미있고 유쾌한 그에게 매력을 느꼈어요. 둘은 사랑에 빠졌고 행복한 나날을 보냈지요.
At last, the Sun, too, took human form and appeared before the princess as a strong hunter. He entertained her by playing sweet notes on a bamboo flute, and the princess was attracted to his charm and wit. Love sprung between them, and the two took great delight in each other’s company.
하지만 공주에게 마음을 온통 빼앗긴 태양신 때문에 해는 저녁 일찍 지고 아침 늦게 떠올랐어요. 마을 사람들은 태양신이 할 일을 게을리하는 데에 점점 더 불만을 표시했고, 태양신은 임신을 한 공주를 혼자 두고 떠나기에 마음이 너무 무거웠지만 어쩔 수 없이 하늘로 돌아갔어요.
However, the Sun God was so captivated by the Princess that he barely completed his circuit of the sky. The villagers became unhappy about the Sun leaving early in the evening and rising late in the morning. The complaints grew so loud that the Sun had to leave his pregnant bride behind and return to the sky.
혼자 남은 공주는 다시 용의 모습으로 변하여 호수로 돌아갔고, 몇 달이 흐른 뒤 세 개의 알을 낳았어요. 그리고 신들의 전령 까마귀를 불러 부탁했어요. “까마귀야, 이 소식을 하늘에 계신 내 낭군님께 전해주겠니?” 그 당시 까마귀는 눈처럼 새하얀 깃털을 가진 새였답니다.
Lonely without the Sun, the Princess returned to her serpent form and slipped back beneath the lake. A few months later, she pulled her sleek and silver body out of the lake and gave birth to three fine eggs. She called out to Crow, the Sun’s messenger, and said, “Dear Crow, please tell my husband that his children have been born.” At the time, crows, the messengers of the spirits, were as white as snow.
“네, 알겠습니다! 네, 알겠습니다!” 까마귀는 즉시 하늘로 날아올라 태양신에게 소식을 전했어요. 태양신은 크게 기뻐하며 보물 상자를 열어 그중 가장 크고 귀한 보석을 꺼냈어요. “나의 사랑하는 그녀에게 이 홍보석을 전해다오. 이것으로 장차 세 아이가 다스릴 왕국을 사라고 말해주렴.”
“I will! I will!” cawed Crow, and he flew as fast as he could up to the Sun. The Sun God was overjoyed. He opened his treasure box and chose the biggest and most valuable ruby. “Take this to my lovely wife,” he told his messenger, “and tell her to buy a kingdom for our children to rule over.”
“네, 알겠습니다! 네, 알겠습니다!” 까마귀는 태양신이 곱게 싸 준 보따리를 부리에 물고 떠났어요. 열심히 길을 가던 중, 향긋한 음식 냄새와 경쾌한 풍악소리가 까마귀를 자극했어요. “꼬르륵~” 배도 고프고 고단했던 까마귀는 가까운 나무에 내려앉았어요. “아주 잠시만 쉬다가 가야지…” 까마귀는 혼잣말을 중얼거리며 나무에 보따리를 걸어두고 잔치가 벌어지고 있는 곳으로 쫑쫑 걸어갔어요.
“I will! I will!” answered Crow, and he took the silk bundle in his beak for the flight back to the Earth. Crow was busily on his way when suddenly the aroma of food and the sound of music charged his senses. Hungry and tired, Crow landed himself on a tree nearby. “I’ll refresh a bit here…just for a moment…” mumbled Crow and walked towards the festival.
그런데 상인 한 명이 까마귀가 보따리를 걸어 둔 나무쪽으로 조심스럽게 다가갔어요. 상인은 보석을 슬쩍 차지하고 대신 까마귀 똥을 넣고 보따리를 다시 나무에 걸었어요.
When Crow was gone, a merchant snuck over to the tree. The merchant snagged the bundle, took out the ruby, replaced it with dung, and hung the bundle back onto the tree.
마을에서 배부르게 잔뜩 먹은 까마귀는 해가 진 후에 나무로 돌아왔고 보석을 도둑맞은 사실을 까맣게 모른 채 보따리를 집어 들고 공주에게 날아갔어요. “공주님, 공주님! 태양신께서 보내시는 선물을 가지고 왔어요. 여기 있습니다! 여기 있습니다!” 알들을 보살피고 있던 공주는 크게 기뻐하면서 보따리를 받아들었어요.
Crow came back to the tree long after the night had fallen. No idea of what had happened, Crow hurried to deliver the ruby and flew directly to where the Princess was warming her eggs. “Princess, here’s a gift from the Sun God. For you! For you!” he cried as he placed the bundle near her.
하지만 그 안에는 오로지 까마귀똥 뿐이었고, 그녀의 기쁨은 이내 슬픔으로 변했지요. 슬픔에 잠긴 공주는 말 한마디 없이 세 개의 알은 그대로 둔 채 호수로 뛰어들었고 얼마 뒤 마음의 병으로 그만 죽고 말았어요.
However, inside the bundle was only dung, and the Princess’s joy quickly turned to sorrow when she saw the insult. Without a word, she slipped back into the lake – leaving her eggs in the chill of the night air. Soon after, the Princess died of despair.
뒤늦게 모든 소식을 듣게 된 태양신은 몹시 화가 났고, 신의 정령으로 의무를 게을리한 까마귀의 깃털을 불에 그슬려 버렸어요. 그날 이후 모든 까마귀는 새까맣게 변해버렸지요.
The Sun burst with rage when he learned of Crow’s neglect. As punishment, he scorched the bird black and swore that from then on, all crows would be so.
공주가 죽자 돌봐 줄 어미를 잃은 세 개의 알들은 깨지 못한 채 여러 날 동안 내버려져 있었어요. 그러다 비가 쏟아지는 우기가 시작되었고 알들은 에야와디강으로 휩쓸려 들어가 큰 강으로 떠내려갔어요.
As for the eggs, they were neglected for days without a mother to look after them. Then came the monsoon season, and the eggs washed into the great Irrawaddy River.
알들이 물에 떠내려가다 모고욱에 이르렀을 때, 그중 하나가 바위에 부딪쳐 깨졌어요. 그러자 안에서 셀 수 없이 많은 홍보석이 쏟아졌어요. 이것이 바로 오늘날 모고욱이 홍보석 산지로 유명하게 된 이유랍니다.
When the eggs reached Mogok, one broke open, spilling out countless rubies. This explains why Mogok is known today as the “Valley of Rubies.”
남은 두 개의 알은 미얀마 중부 지방까지 흘러갔어요. 그중 하나가 바위에 부딪쳐 깨지자 그 안에서 호랑이 한 마리가 나왔어요.
The two remaining eggs found its way to central Burma, where one broke open and loosed a great tiger.
마지막 알은 남부 지방까지 가서 깨졌는데, 그 안에서는 악어 한 마리가 나왔어요. 그래서 오늘날 미얀마에 있는 호랑이와 악어는 용공주와 태양신 사이에 태어난 아이들의 자손이라고 합니다.
The third egg broke open in lower Burma, and out came a giant crocodile. Therefore, the tigers and crocodiles in Myanmar today are known to be descendants of the children born to the Naga Princess and the Sun God.
