In loving memory and celebration of the life of

Robert Robson 1954-2013

Welcome to the new season at The Lowry. This is the first season brochure we have produced since The Lowry’s much-loved Artistic Director, Robert Robson, passed away suddenly in September. Robert would always take pride in introducing his artistic programme, and it is with great sadness that this time around I have to do it in his place. Robert provided inspirational artistic leadership to The Lowry from the moment the venue first opened its doors in 2000; with the vision to “bring the world to Salford and Salford to the world”. He was respected across the industry, and is greatly missed by his colleagues here at The Lowry and the people he worked with and supported across the country. It was a source of great pride to him that War Horse has become the best-selling production in Lowry history, with around 100,000 tickets sold so far for Christmas 2013/14. Robert was able to secure another nine week run of the show starting in July 2014, ensuring that even more people will get the chance to enjoy this astonishing, landmark production.

The season also contains performances by The Lowry’s Associate Artists, Theatre Ad Infinitum, and our Company in Residence, Company Chameleon. These are artists that have been nurtured by Robert on their creative journeys for a number of years and are set to perform acclaimed productions in our Quays Theatre. In addition, our Studio programme once again features a collection of emerging artists from across the region, ensuring that The Lowry remains a crucial springboard for the next generation of creative talent. In The Galleries, we have launched our first Performer as Curator exhibition with the enigmatic singer/songwriter Alison Goldfrapp curating work that has influenced her as an artist. This stunning new exhibition underlines The Lowry’s aspiration to blur the lines between visual and performing arts. This season epitomises everything that Robert was about as an Artistic Director: artistically distinctive; embracing new and emerging talent; and providing something that everyone can enjoy. These things will be Robert’s artistic legacy. We hope you can join us once more to enjoy them.

Until Sun 2 March Musician Alison Goldfrapp curates the first in our major new series, giving outstanding performers the opportunity to curate their own visual arts exhibitions. Goldfrapp’s enduring fascination with the darker side of fairy tales and folklore is laid bare in paintings, drawings, photographs, film, sculpture and more from collections around the world. Her reputation for spell-binding live performances and extraordinary visual imagery in her videos and album artwork makes Alison Goldfrapp’s unconventional and revealing exhibition a must-see.

Will the lost present arrive in time for Christmas morning? Written especially for children and brought to life using handmade puppets, original music and delightful storytelling, The Lost Present is an enchanting tale about true friendship.

Beautiful Beast

This powerful and engaging duet explores the quality of touch and its physical and emotional resonance.

In a timeless mythical world of magical horses, goddesses, warriors and fires, the dancer is a fabulous animal, primal and visceral, that longs to be free but requires connection to others.

Co-commissioned by Without Walls and Dance Initiative Greater Manchester, Push continues a conversation that began in childhood between artists Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner. Athletic yet sensitive, it explores the different stances we take as we relate to one another.

Choreographer Thomas Noone has created an atemporal tale through dance to compliment a soundscape of ancient folk music performed live by Scandinavian folk band Gjallahorn in this exciting and magical dance piece.

Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures has created some of the most successful shows of the last 25 years, including Swan Lake, Nutcracker! and the sell-out hit, Sleeping Beauty. Now the company unites New Adventures dancers with remarkable young talent from the North West in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler. Finding themselves abandoned in a deserted theatre, Golding’s legendary characters are imbued with raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Civilisation crumbles, the rulebook is forgotten and the story builds to an electrifying climax. Chilling, beautiful and hugely entertaining, Lord of The Flies will enthral Bourne fans and inspire a generation of new audiences. The Rite of Spring & Petrushka Tue 22 & Wed 23 April The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors Stravinsky’s epic score. Presented by Dance Touring Partnership and performed by an international cast, the imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, age is sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped. By contrast Petrushka is more ethereal, bright and light. Elements of folk dances and sunnier days are conjured as the company dance for their ancestors and slowly free themselves of their influence. Contains nudity, sexual imagery and smoking.

As her son puts much more than his self-respect at stake by trying to impress her with a play he’s written himself, others dream of love, the bright lights, and being able to escape their past. This critically acclaimed adaptation of Chekhov’s masterpiece maintains all its power to enthral; The Seagull is a captivating study of the corrosion of youthful idealism, wasted ambitions and unrequited love. Teechers is a bitingly witty comedy from John Godber, the writer of Bouncers, Perfect Pitch and The Debt Collectors. Join Gail, Hobby and Salty, three fifth form students who, through their end of term play, tell the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school. Three cast members effortlessly transform into a vast array of characters including teachers, dinner ladies, students, an obstructive caretaker and, of course, the school bully. Putting the education system under a microscope, Teechers is an inventive, fast moving modern classic that examines themes and issues still relevant today.

Chariots of Fire Mon 19 – Sat 24 May The Lowry is delighted to welcome this critically acclaimed production direct from the West End, a theatrical event of incredible athletic achievement that will leave you breathless with excitement. Adapted from the legendary Oscar-winning movie, this spectacular and ingenious re-telling of Eric Liddell’s and Harold Abraham’s quest to become the fastest men on earth is an electrifying and immensely moving tale of two men’s rivalry and determination in the face of prejudice, immovable beliefs and overwhelming odds. With track races thundering through the auditorium and featuring the original iconic Vangelis score, this is event theatre at its best.

Opera North

The Girl of the Golden West Wed 5 & Fri 7 March It’s the Gold Rush of 1849 and plucky, gun-toting, saloon owner Minnie plays surrogate mother to the rough crew of miners who frequent her bar, whilst batting back the affections of the local Sheriff. But when a mysterious stranger comes into her life, everything looks set to change... Based on a play by American author David Belasco and set in a world of gun fights, poker games and gold fever, Puccini’s opera has often been dubbed the original Spaghetti Western. Boasting some of Puccini’s most glorious music, this stylish new production is guaranteed to change your perception of what opera is. Sung in Italian with English titles.

Don’t forget to bring some tissues when La Bohème, one of our biggest hits, comes to The Lowry. It’s love at first sight when young struggling artist Rodolfo meets the poor seamstress Mimi. But will their love survive the grim reality of penniless life in the cold of the Parisian winter? Bringing to life the joy, wit and frivolity of late 1950s Paris, Phyllida Lloyd’s (Mamma Mia!, The Iron Lady) lavish production of Puccini’s heartbreaking tale is a Bohème high on emotion, marrying glorious music, sets and colourful costumes in a stunning spectacle telling the ultimate tragic love story.
