Over the course of our twelve year history, The Lowry has aimed to bring you the best shows in the world. In 2013, we’re proud to be presenting the North West premiere of one of the landmarks in British Theatre – War Horse. First produced by our partner company, the National Theatre, this astonishing piece of drama has won the hearts of millions all over the world. War Horse isn’t the only outstanding drama from the National Theatre that will be gracing The Lyric stage this year. We’re delighted to see the return of the sell-out comedy success One Man, Two Guvnors, in a year that saw it take Broadway by storm. Alongside bringing you these established West End hits, we’re just as committed to nurturing a new generation of theatre-makers through our “Developed With The Lowry” programme in The Studio. Amongst another diverse theatres programme across our three spaces, there’s quality running throughout. We’re delighted to be opening the national tour of the smash-hit musical sensation Hairspray, which features a stellar cast including the brilliant Mark Benton. In the Galleries, The Lowry is committed to supporting the relationship between performance and visual arts. There is surely no artist better placed to do this than the Godfather of Pop Art, Peter Blake. He’s worked with some of the twentieth century’s most celebrated musicians, including Elvis Presley and The Beatles, and co-created the legendary cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Also in our Galleries, we are creating a special exhibition exploring you, our audience, with our new commission Centre Stage. We hope you can join us.

Ends Sun 24 February Known as the Godfather of Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake has been inspired by pop music since the 1950s. Many of his musical heroes, including The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers and Ian Dury, feature in this major exhibition, marking his 80th birthday year. Blake has worked closely with some of the most influential musicians of his generation, most famously co-creating the iconic album cover for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. In more recent years his designs for albums by Paul Weller, Eric Clapton and Oasis are equally celebrated and are shown here against a soundtrack of killer pop music. Peter Blake is a true fan, and this exhibition is a compelling tribute to one of Britain’s most important artists. Original exhibition sponsored by GAM and ZeroC. Aladdin Wed 27 February – Sat 2 March New Production. The Lowry’s partner company returns with a brand new colourful production – a magical tale of love, trickery and triumph. A run-in with Palace guards leads young tearaway Aladdin into a whirlwind of adventure and romance, involving unbelievable riches, love at first sight, treachery, and, of course, a magic lamp... Duped into helping an evil Maghrib, Aladdin finds himself trapped in a cave, and it is only when he attempts to light the old lamp he’s found that his real adventure begins! When he finally returns home, Aladdin’s mother thinks he is telling stories, but she soon finds out the real value of the battered old lamp he has brought with him. When Aladdin falls in love and lands himself in more hot water through his pursuit of the Emperor’s beautiful daughter, his mother uses the lamp to secure his freedom and Aladdin wins the Princess’s hand in marriage. But Aladdin hasn’t realised that the Emperor’s chief advisor is the evil Maghrib, and his adventures haven’t ended yet. Aladdin is the perfect treat for the whole family, a marvelous feast for the eyes, with beautiful costumes and sets, breathtaking choreography and yes, a magnificent flying carpet! If you loved Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake this year, you’ll love Aladdin.

Sutra
Mon 8 April
Tue 14 & Wed 15 May
Using the lives of circus artists as inspiration, Upswing asks what happens as you get older, when your profession requires super human strength and skills? When ageing gradually takes away the tools of your trade? How does it affect your self-worth and your place in the world? This arresting mix of aerial, theatre and dance, treads a delicate path through the minds and bodies of two women who refuse to stop flying.
Sutra is a collaboration between one of Europe’s most exciting dancer-choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Turner Prize-winning sculptor Antony Gormley and 17 practicing Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China. It is a piece of dance that is at once deeply hypnotic, playful and breathtakingly athletic. It is set to a specially commissioned score by Polish composer Szymon Brzoska for piano, percussion and strings, which is performed live.

Mother Courage and Her Children By Bertolt Brecht. Translated by Tony Kushner. Directed by Chris Honer.
Fri 22 February – Sat 9 March The bloody battlefields of the Thirty Years’ War provide the setting for Brecht’s astonishing tragedy of war, Mother Courage and Her Children. Vital, indomitable, contradictory, Mother Courage is considered by many to be one of the most powerful stage creations of the Twentieth Century.
A tireless entrepreneur of the battlefield, Mother Courage is unswerving in her determination to make a profit from the dirty business of war even as it threatens her children. An unforgettable theatrical experience, Brecht’s great story of war and business with its rich mixture of narrative, incident, music and dry humour is as cleareyed and provocative as ever – a must see classic.

By William Shakespeare. Directed by Edward Hall.
Tue 9 – Sat 13 April One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of Illyria. In The Taming Of The Shrew two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful Bianca, whilst gold-digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. This brash, brutal and darkly comic story pulls no punches. Both plays explore beautifully how being in love with the wrong person reveals true feeling, as Shakespeare asks us to examine what makes happiness.

Drama ‘One of the nation’s most acclaimed and fiercely intelligent directors.’ BBC News
Northern Broadsides
Tue 16 – Sat 20 April By Githa Sowerby. Edited by Blake Morrison. Directed by Sir Jonathan Miller. Designed by Isabella Bywater.
This powerful drama written and set in the North of England, 1912, is an unflinching portrayal of an industrial Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. John Rutherford is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family-owned glassworks, Rutherford & Son, takes precedence over everything… even happiness. In a household run on fear, cracks begin to appear. The emotional pitch builds up like a pressure cooker and the dramatic voltage intensifies as Rutherford’s absolute authority is challenged. Ranked by the National Theatre as one of the Top 100 Plays of the Century, there are few dramas as deeply human, uncompromising and immediately rewarding as this. Northern Broadsides, directed for the first time by the renowned director Sir Jonathan Miller, bring its trademark gritty, no nonsense performance style to this astonishing play that sees Artistic Director, Barrie Rutter, taking the role of the imperious John Rutherford. By arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.

Mon 29 April – Sat 4 May After a triumphant run in London’s West End, this acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written is coming to Salford. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly! Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film directors. His numerous awards include Best Comedy Award for the stage play Goose Pimples, a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema, the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Secrets and Lies and an Oscar for Topsy Turvy.
