The Lowry for Schools We offer a range of creative workshops exploring the LS Lowry Collection, special exhibitions and our Theatres programme, through both visual and performing arts. Our workshops are led by professional artists and practitioners and take place at The Lowry, or if you prefer, we can come to your school. Take your pick from one of the workshops below, or we can create something tailor made for your class.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake Workshops with New Adventures

An exciting Education programme for Schools at The Lowry To celebrate the first ever UK tour of the National Theatre’s War Horse at The Lowry this Autumn 2013 we have a special programme of education workshops to complement this internationally acclaimed production, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo. Workshop

War Horse Puppetry skills

Designed to give students a hands-on understanding of how to create characters through puppetry and physicality; the workshops give a taste of the devising process through which the War Horse horses come to life. This workshop will be run by National Theatre practitioners who have worked as performers and puppeteers in the production.

A Trip To The Stage – Fiddler On The Roof Join us in this fun packed day where you will explore the exciting world of dance and musical theatre! An exciting insight to the art of making musical theatre, songs, dance and story telling. Then watch the matinee performance of Fiddler on The Roof. Participants will be supervised and at all times during the workshop and chaperoned during the performance.

A full day workshop that starts across the water with a morning session at IWM North for a First World War object handling session. Followed by an afternoon drama workshop at The Lowry to use this historical evidence to bring these rich stories to life.

These onstage pre-show events are specifically designed to unlock the extraordinary creative learning opportunities of War Horse. Young people will have the unique experience of interacting with members of the War Horse Creative and Acting Company and the National Theatre’s Learning Team to explore some of the background principles of puppetry, the rehearsal and technical processes that have brought this magical production to life, as well as a chance to ask questions of company members at the end. (Set dates: tickets must be booked in advance) All workshops are accessible and adapted to suit each class

Birmingham Royal Ballet Open Class Based on the exciting new ballet, Sleeping Beauty, these workshops are a great opportunity for young ballet students and are led by a professional artist and pianist. Often there will be additional events available such as make-up demonstrations, an insight into the costumes or talks with Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers.
