Following last year’s The smash-hit show returns to successful events, the The Lowry for one week only, Family Arts Festival returns delivering its infectious mix of to Salford & Trafford with percussion, dance, theatre and comedy. lots of special shows and activities designed with Emily Brown and The Thing families in mind. As well as staging spectacular events such as STOMP! The Lowry is working with a whole range of local venues and organisations to stage dozens of family friendly events, workshops and activities. Along with our festival partners we are staging a host of family events which include ghostly happenings, crafty workshops and book readings. Don’t forget to look out for our BIG FAMILY PLAY DATE on Sat 1 November where venues pack up and pop up somewhere unexpected!

Join the cast of Hansel and Gretel after the performance and learn how to sign your name in British Sign Language. Come onto the stage, explore the set and discover some ‘behind the scenes’ secrets of theatre. A fun event for all ages. (Approx. 20 minutes.)

Artist Jai Chuhan sets up her studio at IWM North for this special take-over of our family friendly Open Studio sessions. Join Jai Chuhan and explore genuine artefacts from the museum’s collection and enjoy discovering how drawing unlocks creative expression. Suitable for all ages.

United at War explores the impact of the First and Second World Wars by examining what happened to Manchester United’s players, staff and ground. From 1909 FA Cup hero Sandy Turnbull and his time at the front, to the 1941 bombing of Old Trafford; the exhibition focuses on the stories of players and how their lives were changed by their wartime experiences. There will be hourly talks to help guide you through this momentous period of Manchester United history.

IWM North 10am – 1pm POP UP Manchester United Museum will be bringing along memorabilia from the club’s past for visitors to handle.

12.45am – 1.30pm T Discover Lives of the First World War, the online digital memorial to the millions of people who contributed to the British war effort. Explore objects and find out how to research your own personal connections. Ages 14+.

Health Walk around Salford Quays 12.45pm A gentle 45min family friendly walk taking in the sights of Salford Quays. Meet outside the Lowry Theatre entrance (Please wear flat grippy shoes or trainers).

POP UP Join The Lowry with the Quays pop-up workshop where participants will see a demonstration on how to make 3D pop up features and learn how to create their own building using cutting, scoring and folding techniques with paper. Suitable for ages 8+.

These include show reels from our The Northern Artists Film competition winners, Animate Projects and LUX.

Quays Culture’s first open call and film competition for artists working in the moving image. A selection of cutting-edge work from innovative artists across the North. Featuring work from students and new talent as well as established filmmakers. Work was submitted through open call and selected by a professional panel. Many films will be suitable for all ages but please check programme details on the mobile cinema or check the Quays Culture website in advance.

Body Language 1pm and 4.10pm 40 mins This international programme from choreographers and filmmakers pushes the boundaries in the genre of dance film. Traditionally seen as an art form centred on physicality, existing in a moment of time, dance has embraced the freedom and experimentation of technology. The result is an enriched genre of film, which speaks across cultures through the language of movement.

Move on Up from Animate Projects 3.10pm 76 minutes A retrospective programme of dynamic, exciting, provocative and beautiful films made by animation artists in the UK over that last 20 years, including commissions for Arts Council England and Channel 4

Water 1.40pm and 4.30pm 35 mins Artists’ films curated especially for Greater Manchester’s Waterfront, this diverse and imaginative collection explores the often complex relationship between humans and water. is shown as a place for habitation and play, a vital substance that has the ability to create, destroy and inspire.

This is a unique video karaoke performance that encourages the public to join in with current serving soldiers songs, showing a modern view of the soldier. Developed over an 18-month period of conversation and questions, The Soldier’s Song offers a karaoke liaison for all to try.
