This autumn we’re bringing the “best of British” to Salford in a season that is undoubtedly one of our most exciting in recent years. Photo of Original London Cast of War Horse by Brinkhoff/Mögenburg.
Opera North are celebrating the centenary of Benjamin Britten with a season which features their breathtaking production of Peter Grimes. Great British writers also take centre stage with Alan Bennett’s critically acclaimed new play People, alongside classic dramas from Willy Russell, Agatha Christie and Anthony Burgess. In dance, Matthew Bourne’s seminal masterpiece Swan Lake returns, a production I would view as one of the most important pieces of dance to have been produced in the last fifty years. This forms part of one of the country’s most exciting dance programmes, which features Birmingham Royal Ballet, RAMBERT and a UK première by Michael Clark Company. Our relationship with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation goes from strength to strength, and this season, we welcome two shows to the Accelerate programme: Tony & Mike (see p37) and The House of Nostril (see p42). And as if this wasn’t enough, the long-awaited landmark production of War Horse will finally be with us for Christmas 2013. It’s already the best-selling production in Lowry history, with nearly 70,000 tickets sold already. It’s not too late though, but we advise you to book now to avoid disappointment! I’m also delighted to say that our new family area, The Lookout, will be open in time for the summer. Find out more on pages 32 & 33. We’re proud that, in 2012, The Lowry was once again the most visited attraction in Greater Manchester with around 820,000 people welcomed through our doors. I’m sure this diverse, high-quality autumn programme will see audiences flooding to Salford Quays to enjoy even more memorable experiences at The Lowry. We hope you can join us.
Robert Robson Artistic Director, The Lowry
Accelerate offers tailored professional development opportunities to four emerging and mid-career theatre companies each year. From masterclasses with expert practitioners, to seeing new work or 1-2-1 mentoring with an artist they admire, the programme seeks to accelerate the development, knowledge, skills and practice of the next generation of theatre makers. Accelerate is a new initiative from The Lowry that is generously supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

The Best Christmas Present The Lost Present Sun 17 November
Sun 29 & Mon 30 December
A reading by Michael Morpurgo of his book, The Best Christmas Present in The World, with Virginia McKenna and Voices at the Door.
It’s Christmas Eve, and having tumbled to earth through the night sky, Elva sets out on a journey to find her best friend – a little girl she hasn’t even met yet. Will the lost present arrive in time for Christmas morning? Written especially for children and brought to life using handmade puppets, original music and delightful storytelling, The Lost Present is an enchanting tale about true friendship.
Almost a century after the famous Christmas Truce of 1914 and the football match in No Man’s Land between the British and the Germans, a soldier’s letter is found by chance in an antique desk. And thus begins the quest to find “Dearest Connie”. Quays Theatre Times 2pm Tickets Children £16, Adults £21

Mon 2 – Sat 7 September Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone, and continues to enjoy standing ovations at every performance.

Tue 12 – Sat 16 November Firmly crowned as a modern day classic, Matthew Bourne’s powerful, provocative and totally original interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm, dazzling audiences in the West End and Broadway, and across Europe, Asia and Australia. Since its London première, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the international stage, collecting over 30 international theatre awards, including three Tonys. Boldly shattering the traditional concept of swans in tutus, and blending dance, humour and spectacle with extravagant award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston and lighting by Rick Fisher, Matthew Bourne has created a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times. Following a sell-out run in 2010, this thrilling, audacious and original production, now unquestionably established as one of theatre’s great events, returns to The Lowry.

Directed by Chris Honer.
Thu 26 September – Sat 12 October Willy Russell’s intimate comedy with big ideas and an even bigger heart is a gem of British theatre. Inspired by Russell’s own experiences of returning to education, this multi-award-winning comedy returns to Manchester for the first time in over twenty years. Brash, straight-talking hairdresser Rita is determined to change her life. She wants to know ‘everything’ and she thinks the Open University might just be the answer. World-weary, alcohol-fuelled lecturer Frank is a failed poet, a self-acknowledged ‘appalling teacher of appalling students’. In fact, he’s just about given up. In need of extra cash, he agrees to tutor Rita, totally unaware of the whirlwind that’s about to enter his world… The unlikely pair form a life-changing bond as Rita starts to find herself, and Frank finds a whole new lease of life. Touching, life-affirming and very, very funny, Educating Rita is a comic masterpiece from one of our best-loved writers.

Tue 15 – Sat 19 October Following their visit with the uproarious One Man, Two Guvnors earlier this year, the National Theatre returns to The Lowry with Alan Bennett’s smash-hit new comedy People. People spoil things; there are so many of them and the last thing one wants is them traipsing through one’s house. But with the park a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what is Dorothy to do? Her archdeacon sister wants to hand the estate to the care of the National Trust, but Dorothy favours a more creative solution. Glynis Henderson Productions & Action To The Word
Mon 21 – Sat 26 October Action To The Word’s breathtaking all-male version of A Clockwork Orange is an electrifying and testosterone-filled physical theatre ’horrorshow’ that exquisitely captures and transcends the spirit of Anthony Burgess’ original literary masterpiece. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. A playtime of orgiastic ultra-violence and sexuality, it is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. An unapologetic celebration of the human condition, it remains as terrifyingly relevant today as when the book was published in 1962 and the Stanley Kubrick’s film caused a stir in 1971.

Dragon By Oliver Emanuel. Directed by Jamie Harrison & Candice Edmunds. Conceived by Jamie Harrison, Oliver Emanuel & Candice Edmunds.
Fri 8 & Sat 9 November
A dragon. At the corner of the street. Beneath the streetlamp. Small twists of smoke escaping from its left nostril. Watching… Waiting… Tommy can’t sleep. He hasn’t been able to since his mum died a year ago. Since then, life for Tommy has gone from bad to worse. His dad is grief-stricken, his big sister ignores him and he has become the victim of the school bully. Then one restless night, Tommy goes to the window, throws back the curtain… And a dragon is looking at him. Straight in the eye. Terrifying and destructive, but powerfully intoxicating, the dragon burns with the anger and hurt that Tommy feels and makes anything seem possible. They go everywhere together as if connected by invisible thread and suddenly life is much better again. However, as the relationship grows, so do the mysterious fires that have started igniting across Glasgow’s Garnethill. Dragon is a new show for adults, teenagers and children with vivid imaginations. This extraordinary visual story told without words, features puppetry, illusion and original music. Suitable for ages 9+.

The Boy Who Kicked Pigs Based on the cult novel by Tom Baker.
Sun 15 September Originally part of The Lowry’s ‘Developed With’ programme, The Boy Who Kicked Pigs enjoyed a sell-out run in our Studio Theatre in June 2012. Now it’s back, bigger and better, for one night only. Thirteen-year-old Robert Caligari has a rather nasty habit of kicking pigs. But today, Robert is going to get his comeuppance. Today is the day that Robert Caligari is going to die. Kill the Beast return with their critically acclaimed adaptation of the cult novel by the occasional Time Lord Tim Baker. By Graham Warrener.
Zdenka Fantlova is one of a handful of Holocaust survivors alive today. This is her story. Born in Czechoslovakia, Zdenka was 17 when the war began and the ring of the title was given to her by her first love, Arno. Zdenka kept it with her as a symbol of truth and hope, from Terezin to Bergen Belsen. Directed by Mike Alfreds, The Tin Ring is a profoundly uplifting story of great love, brought to life by Jane Arnfield in this outstanding solo performance.
The immortal comic characters created by the late Les Dawson, aided and abetted by Roy Barraclough, are brought to life for the stage in this hilarious new play. Written by Graham Warrener in collaboration with Terry Ravenscroft, the original Cissie and Ada scriptwriter, we revisit the story behind the sidesplitting sketches. Starring former Coronation Street favourites Eric Potts and Steven Arnold.

Peter Grimes
Wed 6 & Fri 8 November
Death in Venice
Set in a small fishing community on the English coast, this astounding opera is an utterly absorbing, emotionally compelling experience, not to be missed. Britten’s atmospheric music takes powerful inspiration from the sea, vividly portraying the human drama unfolding around the outsider Peter Grimes.
Oberon, the fairy king and Tytania, his queen, are locked in a conflict which spills over into the human world. Shakespeare’s witty words and the composer’s mesmerising music come together in this colourful and vibrant production where costumes and music are equally sparkling.
Gustav von Aschenbach, a novelist in crisis, leaves Munich for Venice in search of fresh inspiration. Aschenbach is captivated by the beauty both of the place and Polish boy Tadzio. Britten’s sensual final opera is tinged with mortality, and an exotic orchestral score conveys the story to great dramatic effect.
