Welcome to the new season at The Lowry. Welcome to our new season! We’re incredibly proud to be bringing you another packed programme featuring some of the finest companies and performers from around the world. Last Christmas the sell out-production of War Horse broke all Lowry box office records, with over 115,000 people captivated by this incredible theatre event. We are delighted that this production will be returning this summer for another run, giving you a second chance to see this landmark production if you haven’t already. We are equally delighted to announce that we are continuing our fantastic relationship with the National Theatre, presenting the first performances of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time outside London. The Lowry has always been committed to bringing the best companies from around the world to Salford, and Cape Town Opera’s production of Show Boat will certainly continue this tradition. The Lowry is one of only three venues in the country you can see this fantastic production and it’s the first time that the company have ever visited the North West.
The Lowry is also welcoming world-class companies from the UK too. Opera North’s are bringing their landmark production of La Boheme to The Lowry once more. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, this lavish production is not to be missed. And with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambet, the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company all on their way to Salford this year – The Lowry is continuing to offer the best of British. We’re also passionate about supporting emerging talent, and another vibrant Studio programme, featuring Associate Artists Kill The Beast, will give you the chance to see a range of wonderful companies with big futures. In the Galleries, we are partnering with the BBC to bring you a brand new exhibition celebrating the history of children’s broadcasting. Here’s One We Made Earlier will take you on a journey through over 90 years of broadcasting which has helped to shape media today. Before that, Jonathan Yeo’s exhibition Portraits sees one of the UK’s finest portrait artists exhibited in the North West for the first time. We hope you can join us.

Blue Peter 1969
Here’s One We Made Earlier The story of BBC Children’s broadcasting: past, present & future Bill and Ben, Muffin the Mule, Andy Pandy, Teletubbies, Crackerjack, Newsround, Blue Peter and Tracy Beaker… our childhoods have been defined by the broadcasts we first encountered as children. They have shaped our imaginations, from the family sitting room into the wider world.
Teletubbies, 1998
This major exhibition explores the story of over 90 years of BBC Children’s broadcasting, starting with the first days of broadcasting in 1922, when the BBC launched Children’s Hour, right up to the present multi-media moment. Fun, engaging, interactive, and full of famous presenters past and present, Here’s One We Made Earlier will reflect shifting perceptions of children in society, from toddlers who were asked to ‘sit comfortably’ in front of the family wireless, to today’s children who take centre stage on air and online. This exhibition has been produced by The Lowry in partnership with the BBC.

Dance on Film Opens Sat 8 March Dance is an art form often viewed on stage, but this exhibition will explore the presentation of dance via a selection of films by visual artists, choreographers and dance companies, redefining the idea of the moving image and constructing a new stage for dance. From New York City Ballet’s New Beginnings – a moving film for two dancers shot at dawn at World Trade Centre 4 in NYC in 2013 – to a documentary that charts the lives of two principal ballet dancers who have been partners in life and dance for over 50 years. We are also proud to present the critically acclaimed All This Can Happen by Siobhan Davies and David Hinton, a film made entirely from early archive photographs and footage from the earliest days of cinema.
Lowry Favourites The Lowry Collection is the largest collection and archive of the artist’s work in existence and a rich selection of paintings and drawings are always on display. Salford’s own pictures are joined by major loans from public and private collections around the country and are displayed alongside photographs, film, memorabilia and sound recordings. The Gondoliers Wed 21 – Sat 24 May Gilbert & Sullivan’s sparkling comic opera comes to The Lowry, in a brand new version by Opera della Luna. In this exciting new production the company’s regular team of multitalented singers will be augmented by a chorus of 24 young talented musical theatre performers, specially assembled from the Salford area. Packed full of toe-tapping tunes and dances galore, this witty reflection on the values of monarchy and republicanism has proved to be one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most enduring successes, and Opera della Luna’s new take on this much loved classic promises an evening of fun and merriment not to be missed. La Bohème Wed 14 – Sat 17 May Don’t forget to bring some tissues when La Bohème, one of Opera North’s biggest hits, comes to The Lowry. It’s love at first sight when young struggling artist Rodolfo meets the poor seamstress Mimi. But will their love survive the grim reality of penniless life in the cold of the Parisian winter? With its vivid portrayal of bohemian life, the excitement of falling in love and the desolation of loss, this is a Bohème high on emotion. Bringing to life the joy, wit and frivolity of late 1950s Paris, Phyllida Lloyd’s (Mamma Mia!, The Iron Lady) lavish production of Puccini’s heartbreaking tale marries glorious music, sets and colourful costumes in a stunning spectacle telling the ultimate tragic love story.

Götterdämmerung
Don’t forget to book your table at our superb pre-theatre Restaurant.
Opera North’s visually stunning concert production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in recent British opera. ‘If the cycle continues at this level’ said The Spectator’s Michael Tanner of Das Rheingold ‘it will rank as one of the greatest ever.’
Avoid the queues at the interval and pre-order your drinks at any of our theatre bars.
With Götterdämmerung, the four year traversal of Richard Wagner’s monumental music drama reaches its overwhelming conclusion: Siegfried falls amongst enemies, Brünnhilde’s love is betrayed and the gods themselves confront the end of a world and the beginning of a new era.

Teechers is a bitingly witty comedy from John Godber, the writer of Bouncers, Perfect Pitch and The Debt Collectors. Join Gail, Hobby and Salty, three fifth form students who, through their end of term play, tell the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school. Three cast members effortlessly transform into a vast array of characters including teachers, dinner ladies, students, an obstructive caretaker and, of course, the school bully. Putting the education system under a microscope, Teechers is an inventive, fast moving modern classic that examines themes and issues still relevant today.

The Times Australian actress Natalie Imbruglia makes her stage debut in Ayckbourn’s hilarious and ingenious exploration of the complexities of love. Elegant and glacial, Barbara lives in immaculate order on the middle floor of her converted house. Downstairs lives lovelorn postman and part-time plumber Gilbert. Upstairs the empty flat forms a perfect temporary bolthole for Nikki, Barbara’s old school-friend, and her fiancé Hamish. But sparks fly when Hamish and Barbara take an instant dislike to one another… In a wonderfully imaginative set, bedroom farce develops into something more complex as the two adversaries fall head over heels in lust.
