pages 4-5. We have lots of local community news and some great what’s on

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Now I know your all thinking WHAT’S THAT ABOUT? A coat hanger? How can they possibly be a weapon of mass torture? Me and hangers just do not get on.!! Please can someone develop a friendlier, stress free way to store your gear! You go into your already overcrowded wardrobe, full of all those items 2 sizes too small (that you intend to clear out) and they continue to take up valuable space! But unlucky for you, these items are hanging due to the “coathanger”. This great invention gets tangled together, they snap and then your favourite silk top ends up in your shoes at the bottom of the wardrobe with dust and a forgotten stashed Xmas pressi. Their arms aren’t long enough and clothes slip off, then of course there’s the loop issue.... either too long or too short, and when you try to get a spare hanger out to put fresh ironing away, they all jump out on you!! Is it just me or are they the most irritating but essential objects in the world? Charlotte x

Chapter collected all other tolls from the stallholders in the adjoining Market Place (renamed Cathedral Square in 1963). In 1930 new Municipal Buildings were erected in Bridge Street and meetings in the Guildhall were discontinued. The new Town Hall in Bridge Street was officially opened by Alderman Whitsted on 16th October 1933. Other interesting events which have occurred in or in connection with the Guildhall include the building being scheduled as an ancient monument in 1928 when it was completely restored by the City Corporation under the advice of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings. A fine carving of the Arms of King Charles II appears beneath the gable of the East Front and beneath it are the arms of the contemporary Bishop and Dean in 1671, the arms of Sir Humphrey Orme (Chairman of the Governors) and Peterborough’s MP from 1654 to 1671, along with the Montagu family who had considerable political influence in the city during the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1957 Peterborough became twinned with Bourges in France to which a plaque depicting the Bourges coat of arms can be seen on the east side of the Guildhall. Today the upper room is unused but the open space below provides a venue for civic, art and cultural events. June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors

Getting Out and About at Nene Park Nene Park Trust is working on plans to improve access to Ferry Meadows, Orton Mere and Thorpe Meadows for visitors with disabilities. The Trust is aiming to make Nene Park a top countryside site that is even more accessible and welcoming to everyone. Local disabled people have been involved in the project right from the start. The local Disability Forum Manager for DIAL Peterborough worked with the Nene Park Trust’s Visitor Services Manager to appoint specialists to carry out an Access Audit for the Park and to make recommendations for improvement.

RIDE FOR RYDER CHALLENGE

Jan Loveless and Sarah Douglas of Access Matters UK have been appointed and have started work already. As a key part of the process Jan and the Trust want to hear directly from individuals or groups who use the park as well as those who don’t, to hear about their experiences and opinions on the accessibility of Ferry Meadows, Orton Mere and Thorpe Meadows.

The registration fee for Ride for Ryder is £25. Each cyclist is asked and encouraged to raise £50 that will go directly to Sue Ryder –Thorpe Hall Hospice.

There are a number of ways to get involved in this project; by calling Jan on 01227 764411, texting her on 07775 515994, Emailing via jan@access-mattersuk.co.uk or by filling out our short questionnaire which can be collected at Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre or downloaded from www.neneparktrust.org.uk

Do you want to take your biking to the next level and make a huge difference in someone else’s life? Ride for Ryder is more than just a bike ride; it is the most rewarding ride of your life. Ride for Ryder starts at Sue Ryder -Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Peterborough, on Sunday 18 September. There will be two distances offered, 65 miles or 92 miles, completing either distance is an admirable accomplishment

Events like Ride for Ryder help to reach this fundraising goal. The money raised helps provide medical care and emotional support for the patients as well as their families. At Thorpe Hall up to 20 patients with active, progressive and advanced illnesses and their families are cared for. The focus of care is on quality of life. Sign up now for this year’s Ride for Ryder by visiting www.suerydercare. org/rideforryder.

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

The perfect girls night in – pamper yourself without breaking the bank In these tough economic times, sometimes it seems that we have to do things by halves, but you really don’t need to spend a fortune to have a good time. By using the most simple ingredients, you can create your own pamper evening at home; the spa comes to you.

For a milk and water foot soak:

• Take 7 cups of water and 2 cups of milk, mix them and warm in the microwave - the mixture should be as hot as you can take • Put the milk into a bowl & soak your feet for 10 mins For an exfoliating tomato face mask: • Take 1 overripe tomato, • Rinse with cold water and pat dry 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of instant oatmeal Milk has cleansing properties and contains protein, which helps to repair damaged skin, so is great for dry skin. and mix together in a blender • Apply liberally to the face and leave for around 20 mins • Wash off with warm water Tomatoes are amazing for the skin; they protect the mitochondria in our skin which helps to improve skin health and prevent signs of ageing. The lemon juice has benefits too as it contains alpha hydroxy acids, which remove dead skin and cleanse pores.

With these quick and easy recipes, you and your friends can have a truly unforgettable hen night in the comfort of your own home and without spending an absolute fortune! Now just to sit back with a glass of wine and relax...

ANDY HARDING PERSONAL TRAINING

For a hair moisturising treatment: • Take half a cup of plain yoghurt, 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of honey and mix together. • Apply to washed, towel dried hair, then rub it in and hair with a shower cap • Leave for approx 20 mins, rinse, then shampoo again The egg yolk is very high in protein, which is great for growth and repair of damaged hair. Yoghurt is packed with protein also, and contains enzymes which help to remove dandruff and soothe an itchy scalp. The honey, on the other hand, contains beneficial vitamins and zinc which do wonders for your hair.

Components of Fitness Part 2 - Flexibility Last month we talked about the first component of physical fitness “Cardio-vascular” this month we will discuss “Flexibility”. Flexibility is the ability of our muscles and joints to move through they’re full range of movement, also referred to a suppleness or mobility. Why do we need it? • Improved posture and joint alignment giving the body a more slimline poise • Enhanced performance of sporting and day to day activities • Reduced tension in the muscles • Reduced risk of injury when performing movements that require you to move quickly into extended positions, i.e. bending, reaching up and twisting

for a minimum of 5 minutes prior to completing any stretch and preventing a muscular tear.

So what stretches do we have? Static – These stretches are generally advocated as safer.

Stretching should be held for a minimum of 8-15 seconds

These require comfortable supportive positions ‘not moving’

X Factor The new, revamped series of the X Factor starts soon, but will the new judges live up to our high expectations? Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh are the judges this year, so the show will certainly be different from what we are used to. Without Simon, Cheryl or Dannii, the show won’t be the same, but maybe the change will keep it fresh and exciting so that it’s not just the same as every other year. In the upcoming series, we’ll witness the first ever marriage proposal on the show, as well as the usual humorous auditions and breathtaking performances. Hopefully this series will cause as much controversy as usual, and that the change in judges will bring more viewers rather than do the opposite.

It may mean even more hard work, but there are always resits, and there is always a way to achieve what you want in life – one set of bad exam results may set you back slightly, but if you deal with them in the right way and learn from the experience, you can use them to your advantage, try again, and really achieve what you want in life. Of course, perfect exam results first time around are the ideal, so I wish you all the best of luck! Minimal elegance

indows are the

gateway to our homes so when we come to dress them we should give the process some serious thought and consideration. After

all, window treatments can’t just look good; they have to be functional to.

Make a statement

Create the perfect

window dressing Privacy Ground floor rooms normally require more privacy than first floor rooms, especially if you have houses opposite or live on a main road. Do you want something that offers complete privacy at all times or would you be happy to have clear windows during the day providing you can have privacy at night? Give special attention to any bedrooms and think about what kind of privacy they would need; you wouldn’t want any window dressings that allowed silhouettes to be seen!

Sunlight Understands how sunlight works in each individual room of your home. North facing rooms may require thermal window dressings to help keep the room warmer during the winter months, but don’t go too heavy as this will block out natural daylight as may leave the room feeling unwelcoming and dark. Direct sunlight can fade rich colours over time, so consider how much sunlight you want to allow in. Think about your décor and the cost of your possessions. Want to allow sunlight and protect your things? Then consider light filtering materials such as muslin.

Style When choosing your style of window treatment, think about the style of your room. Is it traditional, contemporary, eclectic or country? Do you want to introduce a style that can be repeated throughout the home?

HOME & GARDEN

Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com It’s been a challenging year in the garden, our weather has once again broken records, but we gardeners are a resilient bunch. As with all life we are bound by the elements and all its extremes, but with a little more caution, thoughtful planting and good gardening practices we shall prevail. Our lawns may look a little parched but the borders have overflowed with colourful blooms, winter casualties like Ceaonothus and Cordyline feared destined for the bonfire have fought back and shown that minus 15° is just not cold enough!

Meet the cute Saddleback piglets or the ever-popular Lamb National! Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre is open seven days a week, for further details please visit www.sacrewell.org.uk or call 01780 782254.

Family Fun! - Walk on Water Expands on to the Land After the fantastic reception given to HydroSphere over the last two years, the team behind the business are bringing Land Zorbs to Ferry Meadows for the first time this summer. Those familiar with the idea of Zorbing may be surprised as traditionally people roll down big hills in the large soft plastic ball or Zorb and Peterborough is not famous for its hills! The difference at Ferry Meadows will be that an arena area will be set up on a large grass area and a couple of balls at a time will be able to roll around chasing each other so will be a great activity for the family or a group of friends. HydroSphere and Land Zorbs will be operating daily during school holidays until 5th September. www.zorb-leisure.com www.neneparktrust.org.uk

FLY STRIKE IN RABBITS Is a distressing condition where flies lay their eggs around a rabbit’s bottom and in the hutch. The eggs then hatch into maggots which feed on the faeces and eventually burrow into the rabbit, feeding on it’s flesh! Sounds horrible? It is!

Fly-strike can be fatal! A rabbit with a dirty bottom is far more at risk, this is often the sign of a diet lacking in fibre, a balanced complete diet is essential. Fly-strike is avoidable - Follow these 3 steps: Examine rabbit daily - Check fur is clean, dry and not matted with faeces. If there are signs of maggots contact your vet straight away. Change soiled bedding daily - A dirty hutch and bedding is a magnet for flies. Use plenty of absorbent bedding in your rabbit’s toilet area. Thoroughly clean/disinfect the hutch weekly - Remove everything from the hutch and disinfect with a solution suitable for use with small animals.

The Falcon Inn at Fotheringhay The Falcon Inn at Fotheringhay is renowned for being a fabulous place to go for great food, service and atmosphere, so when invited to come and try the new Sunday afternoon BBQ, “Yes please” was the answer. It took us just over 15 minutes to get there from Stamford. Fotheringhay is between Sibson, Nassington and Elton, set in lovely country side, with the historic church overlooking the Inn’s well kept country cottage gardens. Typical English weather meant we had to sit in the conservatory instead of the dedicated BBQ area, but when we went in, this small disappointment disappeared as the Inn is also beautiful inside. We were met at the bar by Sally, the landlady who couldn’t have made us feel more welcome if we were lifelong friends. We sat in the bar with drinks and some homemade crisps (didn’t

Each meal comes with salad, new potatoes, corn-on-the cob, homemade salsa and coleslaw. The chef was cooking in the rain, under a gazebo, at the BBQ so you had a little show while you waited.
