Two local brothers launch voucher website to boost the local economy My Local Vouchers is a website designed to increase the number of local people using local businesses again. The way in which we aim to do this is by creating a website which allows these smaller, local businesses to offer vouchers i.e. ‘20% off when you spend over £30’ which then encourages locals to shop locally. For local customers, they will be saving money with these vouchers so we see it as a mutually beneficial set up between the business and customer. Brothers Sean (22) and Lee Ruane (20), inspired by other more famous voucher offering websites, noticed that these websites contained more “national” orientated businesses. They felt that a website focusing on local, smaller businesses would be a great way of giving local people an incentive to begin using their local businesses again – the way it used to be.
6
“We started this website as there is not another website offering this.” Explains Lee, “this is an easy way of finding deals and vouchers local to you. It benefits both the customers to save them money during this recession and should also give the local economy a boost by getting people to spend their money with local businesses.” Lee added “We are two young entrepreneurs that want to try and put an end to shops being boarded up. We want to recreate the feeling of community amongst communities – sounds obvious, but unfortunately, we feel that it’s becoming a thing of the past.”

FERRY MEADOWS GETS TOP MARKS FOR EDUCATIONAL VISITS The team at Nene Park Trust are celebrating as their environmental education programme based at Ferry Meadows has gained its first award, less than a year on from its launch. The Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge is the nationally recognised indicator of good quality educational provision. It’s designed to help teachers recognise outdoor education providers who deliver safe and first-rate learning opportunities when looking at booking school visits. Refurbishment works on a new up to date education facility at Ferry Meadows started in December last year converting some underutilised building space at the main entrance into the family friendly Discovery Den. The new education facility and programme took its first school group bookings from the start of the summer term back in April and has proved to be a massive success from day one with 33 groups with over 1200 pupils taking part in a visit to date. Students from Leighton Primary School in Peterborough have been among the first to make use of the new facilities as they recently took part in an explorers themed day with activities including scouting for animal tracks, building shelters and hunting for hidden treasure.

Because of its unique cleaning properties, baking soda can be used occasionally to “clarify” hair to eliminate buildup from commercial shampoos and conditioners. NEW YEAR New Year, is the health equivalent of pressing the refresh button on your life. No matter what you did, a New year means a new you. The process is as simple as it is motivating. Learn from the past experiences and plan for a better way forward. Reinvent yourself, set new goals, and become the person you want to be. Using the above ‘mantra’ we can apply this to your ‘new’ dietary needs. No doubt you have been bombarded with numerous emails or magazines through January, all related to losing pounds a day for 30 days. Generally I think most people know what’s not good for them, it’s the temptation that doesn’t help. Let’s try a few simple steps • Sweets and confectionary take into work or give to charity and clear

JOBS FOR THE MONTH
February - not so bleak this winter (I’ve still got Roses in flower!) and as white snowdrops unfurl, the heavenly citrus scent of Witch Hazel floating on the breeze, we know spring is just around the corner. Much to do in the garden!
The kitchen garden • Apply a general fertiliser like blood, fish and bone to all fruit trees and bushes.
Ornamental garden • Now is the time to prune your Wisteria. Prune back to two buds on all laterals/side shoots, leaving just two fat flowering buds to provide large impressive flowers in May. • Late flowering clematis, prune to 30cm and mulch. • Prune your hybrid T and floribunda roses. • Grass has really not stopped growing so if we have a dry week give a light trim with cutting blades raised high to keep your lawn in check. To borders apply a generous layer of mulch after a winter tidy. There are a number of options available such as home-made compost, well rotted farm manure or composted bark. Annual mulching is one of the secrets to successful borders, improving soil structure and retaining moisture, both vital factors to keep plants growing healthily.
• If your soil allows, towards the end of the month try a short row of early potatoes under horticultural fleece for an early crop. Also, direct in the ground with fleece protection, sow early peas, broad beans, beetroot, radish, spinach and spring onion. • Keep feeding the birds they are your free caterpillar, slug and snail control!
Early spring delights For me a must have plant for the winter garden is the shrub Hamamelis, or witch hazel. Flowers are exquisitely delicate papery tassels, from yellow to red and orange with a subtle citrus scent, most flowering now some in the autumn. Easy to grow, it prefers lighter soils and does well in semi shade or full sun. With no routine pruning needed this is a wonderful plant to brighten up any dreary winter’s day. Good varieties - Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’, ‘Diane’, ‘Jelena’, ‘Arnolds promise’, ‘Copper Beauty’ and Hamamelis mollis. Another early spring delight is Daphne mezereum. Gorgeous pink flowers borne on bare stem with a little scent, this small shrub can’t fail to raise a smile! Easy to cultivate can tolerate most soils in full sun or partial shade, no regular pruning needed just plant it some where it can be seen and enjoyed. Telephone: 01780 783613 | February 2012

Games are not just about fun and family time though, they also bring in education and problem solving. A game which ticks all these boxes is Callisto. It’s easy to learn, but uses strategic skills, dexterity and a bit of luck (so any age can play!). The game was designed by won major international board game awards. The object of the game is to get rid of all of your coloured tiles onto the game board and takes just a few minutes to learn.

time to fill or a child waiting for the other. Launched in the 1970’s, Top Trumps became a popular playground game costing just a small amount so children could save their pocket money for the next set. In recent years, Top Trumps have seen a revival covering television and film characters, sports and modern cartoon characters.

FILM Career Choices It’s often daunting trying to decide upon a career path, but the good thing is that there are many different resources to help you make decisions about possible careers.
The Muppets Exactly twenty years after the last big Muppet movie, the Muppets are reunited as they return to the big screen. The supporting cast includes Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Jack Black. Out February 10th.
Speaking to your teachers is a good place to start, as they can tell you your academic strengths and give you an idea of jobs that you might succeed in. Speak to your school careers advisor too, as they can give you information about possible careers so that you can really explore all of your options. Visiting the library or searching the internet for ideas can be very helpful as well – once you have an idea about what you want to do, these can help to fully inform you about your chosen career path.
Work Experience If you think you have a vague idea of a career that you would like to pursue, gaining

valuable work experience is the best way to find out whether it would truly suit your interests and be enjoyable. Work experience allows you to grasp what working life is really like and helps you to discover whether your chosen career path really is for you or not. Many schools make work experience compulsory in year 10 or 11, but extra experience isn’t a bad thing, and will make you stand out to potential future employers; many companies are eager to take on work experience students, so get in contact!
