Sue Ryder’s Febru-hairy is back!
Family history researchers are urging Peterborough residents to complete their 2011 Census forms correctly to ensure their descendants can compile an accurate picture when detailed information is made public in 100 years. The 2011 Census takes place on Sunday 27 March when every household is required by law to complete a census questionnaire. The information gathered will help plan and prioritise resources and public spending on housing, education, health and transport services for years to come. However, Anna Sexton, archivist at Peterborough’s Central Library, said: “Census records are also an essential source of information for people researching their family histories. By filling in their 2011 Census form correctly people will be leaving a valuable legacy to future generations who want to research their ancestors.
Once again, Sue Ryder Care is asking local supporters to fire up their imagination and fundraise around the theme of hair. The charity has renamed the month of February as ‘Febru-hairy’, where you’re encouraged to participate in hair-related fundraising challenges throughout the month to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice. Fundraiser, Mikey Clarke said; “We’d like as many people as possible to get involved in Febru-hairy as this campaign caters for everybody. You can fundraise as part of a company, school or college, at your local pub or if you want to do something on your own.You can do anything… Cut it, grow it, wax it, trim it, curl it, fake it, love it, hate it. This is one of my favourite Sue Ryder Care challenges because so many people get really creative, and it has always raised a large amount of vital funds for our local Hospice.” So, why not host a bad hair day, get a group of friends or colleagues to wear a crazy wig, take part in a sponsored leg wax or head shave, or even organise a beard or moustache competition? These are just some ideas people can choose from. And be sure to let us know if you come up with any different ideas of your own. To get involved in Sue Ryder’s Febru-hairy month in February 2011, contact Mikey Clarke on 01733 330060 or email michael.clarke@suerydercare.org Also for further information or to download a Fabru-hairy pack visit www.suerydercare.org/febru-hairy

“The information recorded on census forms will be added together to provide total numbers of the make-up of Peterborough’s population, leading to the allocation of government funds. Specific family details will remain confidential for 100 years.” The Peterborough archives service provides a wide range of resources for family history researchers, including free access to specialist databases. In addition, it provides training courses – usually consisting of five, three-hour sessions on successive Monday evenings – for budding researchers. A national census has been held every 10 years (except in 1941) since 1801, with names of individuals introduced in 1841. Forms, complete with an individual barcode, will be mailed to each household and, for the first time, people will be able to complete their details via an online form. PETERBOROUGH SCHOOLS ACHIEVE BEST EVER GCSE RESULTS Peterborough schools achieved their best ever GCSE results in 2010, and saw a significant improvement in its results for all pupils since 2009 based on data released in mid January. In 2010, the percentage of pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C GCSEs has risen from 63 per cent in 2009 to 73 per cent in 2010. The percentage of pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C GCSEs including English and maths has also risen from 41 per cent in 2009 to 46 per cent in 2010. This year’s results are a real success story for the city with improvements in nearly every category. Results have improved for both boys and girls, children in care, young people with special needs, young people who are eligible for free school meals, and those who do not have English as a first language. The search is on for residents with a special or unique talent to perform in the Peterborough Has Talent contest at The Key Theatre, Embankment Road, Peterborough, on Saturday 18 June 2011. now being assessed with a view to being incorporated in the new buildings. The colour scheme workshop continues the academy’s involvement in The Sorrell Foundation’s Young Design Programme, which aims to improve the quality of life in schools through good design. The workshop was led by architect and design consultancy Frank Shaw Associates, which has offices in Chesterfield and Cambridge. After outlining the brief, the Frank Shaw team facilitated discussion and creative brainstorming sessions among three groups of students. The pupils also studied pictures of completed buildings to see how different colours and textures work in certain areas. Their ideas include using the school house colours to identify different areas; using symbols to identify different department and using bright colours in social areas but neutral colours in corridors. The Frank Shaw team has now drawn up recommendations about the student concepts that could be implemented. The report will now to be analysed by the academy management team.

Auditions will take place at the Key Theatre on Friday 25 February 2011 between 5pm and 8pm, on Sunday 27 February 2011 between 10am and 2pm and on Monday 28 February 2011 between 5pm and 8pm. The acts chosen will go through to the final show where a judging panel will offer contestants their comments and criticisms before crowning the winners. Cash prizes will be on offer for first, second and third places. The competition is being organised by a team from Peterborough City Council, who achieved county-wide success in 2008 when they won an award for organising the first Peterborough Has Talent event as part of the Papworth Trust Grand Challenge. The aim of the challenge was to raise as much money as possible for the trust and the city council team raised almost £4,000. This year’s contest will again be in aid of the Papworth Trust as well as other local charities. Last year’s winning acts, singers Jack Sanderson and Wendy Jay, performed at last year’s Peterborough Festival, the Christmas lights switch-on in Cathedral Square and at the World Music Day event in the city centre. For further details regarding the show and the auditions, please call (01733) 864082 or email: talent@peterborough.gov.uk.

Froglife is a national wildlife charity, based in Peterborough, dedicated to the conservation of the UK’s amphibians and reptiles – frogs, toads, newts, snakes and lizards – and the habitats on which they depend. Since 1989 Froglife has been at the heart of ef forts to conserve native amphibians and reptiles, initiating a number of national and regional projects. Tuppence a Toad is a national campaign, which launched in October 2010, to raise much needed funds and awareness for Froglife’s Toads on Roads project. During the year-long campaign Froglife will be holding events and fundraising activities, asking people to collect their tuppences and other small change, and challenging businesses to donate 2p for everytoad helped during the spring 2011 migration.
www.froglife.o The Toads on Roads project has been running for over twenty years and we know of around 750 toad migratory crossings. Common toads are very particular about where they breed and often migrate back to their ancestral breeding ponds each year. They follow the same route, regardless of what gets in their way, which sometimes leads to them crossing roads. Where we get this toad vs. traffic scenario, the toads inevitably come off worse.
The Toads on Roads project registers these sites as ‘migratory crossings’ and helps coordinate local Toad Patrols, who can apply for road warning signs to be installed and actively help the toads across the road.

Rotary’s big aim is to eradicate polio worldwide, and RIBI (Rotary International of Great Britain and Ireland) has worked with The Eden Project, the International Flower Bulb Centre, the National Trust and Learning through Landscapes to plant purple crocus bulbs from the beginning of October last year so they will be in flower for Rotary Day. These Purple Flowers represent the colour of ink dabbed on a child’s little finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio. This terrible affliction is now endemic in only four countries in the world: Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. The Werrington Rotary Club meets at the Golden Pheasant, Main Street, Etton on a Tuesday night at 7.45pm. With a varied programme of social activity and charity work, the club is a great way to help both individuals and local charities.

Hi Beauties, Happy Valentines Day!!!! This month for most of you will be a month of coupled smugness, for you beauties out there in the land of singledom – don’t despair - just think of the money you would of spent on that significant other and go and buy one or all of the below.
Valentine’s Beauty This year I will be hinting heavily for the following gifts for Valentines Day – if I’m lucky! Viktor & Rolf – Flowerbomb
Chanel Spring Makeup collection 2011 – Les Perles de Chanel I love this new collection particularly the nail varnish range, Peter Phillips, the Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup has used the iridescent reflections of pearls as inspiration to design the ‘Les Perles de Chanel’ Spring 2011 Collection. There are 3 Le Vernis nail polishes in the Chanel Spring Makeup collection: • Chanel Le Vernis Pearl Drop nail polish: a pure and white in natural daylight that reveals golden reflections under evening light
I love the smell of V&R’s first perfume here in the UK, the smell is delicious! With gorgeous packaging, bottle design and a fantastic advertising campaign to match – it’s a must for the dressing table! I love the Flowerbomb Hair Mist. Product prices ranging from £30 - £100.
Lingerie from Agent Provocateur Before you ask - yes I know it’s not beauty related - however you will feel beautiful wearing it! Thongs start from £35, I know it’s expensive, but if David Beckham shops there for Posh – what do you expect??
• Chanel Le Vernis Pêche Nacrée nail polish: a soft peach shade with a bronze effect *(This is my favorite) • Chanel Le Vernis Black Pearl nail polish: a pearly grey shimmering with deep blue and green reflections, like a black pearl from the Pacific RRP: £17 available now!
Beauty treatment of the month: Rejuvanessence – Facial Rejuvenation (from £30 per treatment) When Carole Hartwell offered me a Rejuvanessence facial that uses no products apart from rose oil, I was confused, I thought all facials consisted at least of a cleanse, tone and moisturise. However this type of facial uses only oil and the art of fingertip massage. She started by making me comfortable and covering me with blankets, then as soothing music played she started on one side of my face, after 30 minutes of applying her facial massage technique she showed me my face in the mirror, the massaged side of my face looked visibly more toned, my cheekbones looked higher, my skin tone had improved and my face looked radiant. I couldn’t wait for the other side to be done. Not only does this treatment lift and tone, but it detoxifies, de-stresses and can reduce the signs of acne,
wrinkles and fine lines. After the 55 minute treatment was finished, I was astounded by the results, all I wanted to know was how long it was going to last Carole told me it would last a couple of weeks and suggests having the facial once a month!! It really was like having a facelift – with out the knife. Londoners would expect to pay £80 for this facial on Harley Street, but with Carole (the only Rejuvanessence therapist in Cambridgeshire) only charging £30 per facial, or 6 for the price of 5 (£150), I would definitely suggest you give it a try. I will definitely be having another one. Experience rating: 9/10 Carole Hartwell – Holistic Anti-ageing Facials Thorney, Peterborough Tel: 07803 045 325 Email: carolehartwell@hotmail.com

Saint Valentine’s Day By Megan Templeman
Valentine’s Day is a day that the month of February is renowned for. We all know and love (or not in some cases) the traditions which bring everything pink, romantic and sweet to the world for just one day. But where did it all start, I hear you ask? Apart from the commercialised celebration that we are all used to today, it has another, deeper meaning and origin. The real meaning of Valentines Day is slightly obscured due to the fact that three Saint Valentines are said to have been martyred on the 14th February, so essentially it could be due to any of the three. There are two slightly alternating versions of the Biblical story also, a Protestant version and a Catholic version, although the main stories in both are the same. Legend has it that Saint Valentine was a bishop that secretly held marriage ceremonies in about 270 AD because the emperor Claudius II had banned them. The Emperor needed soldiers for his army, and believed that married men were less likely to want to become a soldier because they would want to stay with their wives rather than fight; he thought that married young men were weak, and he needed strong men to fight for him. Valentine

saw this injustice and didn’t agree with the Emperor’s idea at all; he believed that young lovers should be allowed to marry freely. He united young lovers in secret places, allowing them to be together in love. However, he was soon found out and sent to jail. His jailor, Asterius, is said to have had a blind daughter that Valentine was able to heal due to his saintly powers. He grew very close to Asterius’ daughter whilst awaiting his sentence, and is believed to have fallen in love with her. Therefore just before he was executed on 14th February 27 AD, he left her a note signed ‘From your Valentine’, hence the reason that we send cards bearing this message on Valentine’s Day.Valentine’s Day is associated with love and romance due to the fact that Saint Valentine helped young lovers to be together and allowed their love to blossom. Although other stories do exist and this could simply just be a myth, I think this is most believable, and a nice way to think of Valentine’s Day this February. So now you know, and when you write your Valentine’s card this year you will no longer be left wondering how it all came about.

Talking to travel agents, and looking on online forums the average is about £700 a month, for a backpacking/hostel trip in this part of the world. The key is to book your flights in advance, the earlier you book them the cheaper they’re likely to be and you can book seats together if you’re travelling with someone. The cheapest and easiest place to fly to is Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and a great starting place for your backpacking adventure. Once you’re there, if you need any internal flights check out Air Asia. After marking out your budget and booking your flights it’s time for travel insurance and injections… I’m off for mine now! Owch…
Holly’s travel blog Holly is a local resident, English literature graduate and writer, setting out to travel for three months around South East Asia. Each month in the City Scene, Holly will be sharing her travel blog with us and February sees plans starting to unfold by looking at getting up, up and away.... 2010 was a good year. 2011 is already turning out to be a great one! Now, we all make resolutions at the start of each new year; dieting, exercising more, taking time out to visit old friends… the list is endless, and I wonder just how many of those resolutions have already been broken? Nodding in agreement, me too. But this year, I’ve decided to do something I can’t go back on… I’m giving up my cosy Peterborough life, my job, my home, my bed (!) for a three month backpacking trip round South East Asia. Upping and leaving it all in search of warmer climes, a more laid back life and a taste of paradise

Kitchens trend predictions for 2011 The kitchen continues to be an extension of our living space, a place where we spend a large proportion of our time at home. It must incorporate our cooking, dining and social seating areas which is why the kitchen is becoming more prone to changes in modern interior design trends. At the same time it must still be practical and suit our everyday needs. DESIGN - Curves, breakfast bars and islands are set to feature in many kitchen designs in 2011. Curves can be incorporated in many ways from rounded doors to curved worktops, while well designed breakfast bars and islands will give a seamless integration from cooking to seating area. FURNITURE - Pale, neutral kitchens in classic woodgrain and painted wooden doors will remain popular, but there will be an increase in stronger colours that make an impact. High gloss units, glass splashbacks, and worktops, offer infinite options for creating a truly individual kitchen. SINKS & TAPS - Colour is beginning to make a comeback in sink design. Stainless Steel sinks are being combined with the use of coloured glass surrounds and accessories to create a stylish workstation.
The Digital Switchover and what it may mean for you… The way you watch your favourite TV programmes is changing. The government will turn off the traditional analogue TV signal, region by region, between 2008 and 2012, to allow all TV services to go digital. Traditional analogue is where you can only receive BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and possibly Channel 5. If you receive Anglia News then you are in the ‘Anglian Region’ and the analogue transmitter will be switched off in April 2011. If you receive Central News, then you are in the ‘Central Region’ which will be switched off in May 2011. If you live in north Lincolnshire you may receive Yorkshire television and this will be switched off in July 2011. Any TV that is not converted to receive digital when the digital switchover happens will no longer be able to receive TV programmes. Why is the digital switchover happening? At the moment, some households still cannot access Channel 5 and around one in four homes cannot get digital TV via their aerial as the reception in their area is poor. The digital switchover, which is a government initiative, aims to make it fairer for everyone, as only by switching off the old analogue signal will it be possible to increase the digital signal to cover parts of the country that cannot receive it at the moment and to deliver additional services such as HD TV. Going digital means a lot of great benefits for everyone: • Better picture and sound quality • Extra TV channels at no extra cost, plus other channels available on subscription • The provision of terrestrial HD TV channels • Digital radio channels • Access to a range of interactive services (via the red button on your remote) • On-screen TV listings including a guide to the coming week’s TV programmes

What do I need to do? To get digital TV you will need to have Satellite, Cable or a set-top box such as Freeview or Freesat. Whichever option you choose to go with you will not be forced to replace your existing TV, unless of course you just want a new TV! If you bought your TV after 1996, it will probably have a SCART socket on the back, which allows it to be connected to a digital set-top box. A Freeview digital set top box is the most cost-effective solution. In most circumstances you may need to get a wide-band aerial installed (which is required for this region) particularly if your existing one is old. Most of the Freeview boxes claim to provide you with a wide array of channels but be aware that you may not be able to receive all these unless you have the right aerial fitted; this will then allow you to collect all the programmes available in your area. If you have multiple TV sets in your home then you must convert all of them with a set top box for each. The digital switchover in your region will occur overnight on a set date. Don’t panic, you will be informed of this date well in advance. Once the region has switched over, equipment that is designed to receive only analogue signals will no longer receive TV pictures. Stay Safe by using a local safelocaltrades.com Aerial Specialist to carry out your digital switchover. If you have any queries, concerns or would like to speak to a trustworthy aerial specialist for a free no obligation survey, please go to www.safelocaltrades.com or contact freephone 0800 014 1832.

Red Mile Energy Cash on the attic! Imagine never having to pay another electricity bill, or even better having your power supplier pay you rather than bill you. This is now a reality for many customers who have installed Solar Electric Panels with most systems achieving between 8 - 10% return on investment after tax. So where is the catch? Well there isn’t one. The incentive scheme is part of legislation to improve the uptake of renewable energy in homes across the country. It is payable for 25 years (from April 2010) and even better it is index linked to the Retail Price Index so your earnings are protected from inflation. Solar panels are relatively easy to fit to most roofs without any disruption to the house or its occupants, they require virtually no maintenance and last for decades, and they don’t even have any complicated controls to manage. The technology is well tested as panels have been installed across Europe and America in the many millions already. They simply convert daylight into electricity and many homeowners, businesses, schools and farms are now getting in on the act and earning money from the sun. The incentive scheme payments will drop permanently from April 2012 so there is literally no time like the present to act! Finance
We’ve been decorating our house with a view to putting it on the market this spring but how important is the garden when it comes to selling?
A:
Gardens are an extra room outdoors and do add value to a property. While not necessarily a monetary value, a neglected garden can detract from a good property. It is a question of scale and appropriateness to the property and its target market. A small, well maintained garden can be just as attractive as sweeping lawns or pony paddock to the right buyer – but tidiness is the watchword. If the house needs sprucing to sell, it is likely the garden does too. Even if it’s just to rake the gravel and re-stock tubs or window boxes. For viewing, make sure no washing is hanging out. Last year’s rusting barbecue or neglected garden furniture are turn-offs. Sheds and fences must look secure and well maintained. If a pet uses your garden, remove any deposits. Show how the garden complements a family property with defined areas for play and an area in which the grown-ups can relax but keep watch. Summer houses, gazebos and swimming pools impress but not when squeezed onto a postage stamp-sized lawn. If the garden is north facing, it may sell better during winter, when nobody considers going outside. Even then, avoid having piles of rotting leaves. The key is to have the garden looking the best it can to suit the property style and the time of year. Researched and written by Elaine Mitchell on behalf of Carter Jonas in Peterborough

Education
My son has passed the 11 plus examination but I am worried that he will not be allocated a place at a grammar school which is over subscribed. We do not think that our other local school would meet his needs and Entrance Tests at Independent schools will already have taken place. What can I do if he is unsuccessful? Year 1 is a very important educational milestone and choosing a school at this age is every bit as important as choosing a secondary school at the end of Year 6. Many parents are happy to place their son or daughter in a local nursery but the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage requires further decision making. Parents may choose to keep their child in their local primary school but increasingly factors such as class sizes mean that alternative options may be considered.
Health
National Heart Month February is National Heart Month and during this time of the year it is important to think of the health of our heart and what we can do to keep it healthy, especially for women as heart disease kills three times more woman than breast cancer. Following is some tips to look after your heart. Healthy Eating: It is important to take care of your heart through eating lots of fruit and vegetables and try to avoid fatty and processed foods as it clogs your arteries. Stay Active: Physical activity is great for your heart and helps to keep you fit. It is recommended that you do 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5
A good school will place real emphasis on the importance of Year 1 as the beginning of a more formal education, and prospective pupils might be invited to attend a taster day. It is very important to visit a new school in a working day; meet teachers and to ask questions about differentiation; special needs provision and extra-curricular activities. It can be worrying to think about moving children out of their familiar nursery setting, but making the right choice at the start of Year 1 can prevent anxiety about large class sizes and a child being lost in the crowd later on. I am sure that your daughter will soon make new friends and at her age new routines quickly become the norm. You will also find that schools which do not have a nursery or Reception are especially well geared up to making pupils feel at home in Year 1.
times a week, whether a walk to the shops or riding your bike to work or taking the stairs instead of the lift. Relax: A contributing factor to heart attacks and stroke is stress. In this day and age people are stressed about jobs, their finances and families. It is important to take time out to relax and unwind, maybe by reading, yoga or meditation. Stop Smoking: Smoking is one of the major risk factors for heart disease so if you care about your heart try to stop. The first step is to talk to your GP and they can offer advice on what options will work for you.

“Teen Scene” By Daniel Wiesner-Papp
Monthly Update Not a lot has happened very interesting this month, started off the New Year with a big headache… I saw the film Tron at the start of the month, struggled to get off my iPad for most of January, it’s just so much fun! I’m also trying not to break any New Years resolutions, although I haven’t learnt how to keep hold of my money and save it so far.
Film - Tron iPad Review
Wow, this film was absolutely mind-blowing. I enjoyed every second of it and I also had the money spare to go and watch it in 3D which enhanced the experience even more. Tron is all about a parallel universe that the main characters dad created back in the late 80’s, and his dad disappeared, due to him entering the parallel universe and the portal closing. Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn, looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 20 years. A must see and HUGE recommendation!
So for Christmas my main gift I got the iPad, and its probably the best gift I have ever received… there is so much you can do on it, that you can never be bored! Also, I have found a way to use it as a phone which is also very handy, I’m not sure if I would dare walk around Oundle holding it to my ear though… My favourite thing about the iPad is the 3G part (if you’re willing to pay a little extra) which means you can get onto the internet wherever you are.
Eastern Spices Where to start with this place, my all time favourite take-away and my second home. I can think of nothing better to finish off a night out than popping into Eastern Spices and getting the perfect donor kebab, dreamy! But in all fairness, I’m in there more than just nights out now, it’s near enough everyday, but that’s not always a bad thing. I’d rate Eastern Spices 10/10 for food and friendliness.

Music – deadmau5 Deadmau5 is an artist that describes his music has having no genre, but if I had to pin point a genre to it I would probably class it under House/Electro music. Deadmau5 is a man called Joel Zimmerman, and here is an interesting fact for you all, deadmau5 got his name from when he found a dead mouse in his computer while he was replacing his video card! Nice!! I would recommend listening to deadmau5 on a very good sound system, or a decent pair of headphones.

Knits and Purls After casting on, last month, now you can try to knit and purl stitches. I find it easiest to follow images, so internet sources are great as well as books from your local library. Scour local charity shops too for books and magazines.....knitting and purling is the same as it was years ago, so the age of the advice doesn’t matter! Once you can ‘knit’ a stitch and also ‘purl’ a stitch, you have at your disposal a host of styles.
TOP TIP FOR RIBBING!! – Make sure you purl the stitch you have knitted on the previous row and vice versa. Needles Bamboo needles feel comfortable and have a warm and earthy feel. They are comfortable to use and good for beginners because they are not as slick as metal or plastic needles. Card making With Valentine’s upon us, maybe this is a good time to consider making your own card(s)! So many shops locally can help you with card, pre folded for that neat edge, and matching envelopes. How you decorate and finish the card is up to you; photo, hearts, lace, silk, buttons, confetti, pressed flowers, rubber stamping....the list could be endless! Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte is undoubtedly the most devastatingly romantic book ever written (Jane and Rochester literally go through fire for love). I read somewhere that you won’t understand true love until you’ve read this book! For my Valentine’s selection, I have chosen personal favourites which have plenty to say about That Thing Called Love. For me, a great love story is one in which we recognize our own hopes and dreams – and also the trials and tribulations we may have experienced. But all good romances must have that fairy-tale element which takes us out of the drudge of our everyday lives and puts into print the happy-ever-afters to which we all aspire…
Maggie O Farrell | After You’d Gone Headline Review £7.99 How I sobbed in this book. Alice is such a lovely character; I wanted to be her, to befriend her, to mother her. And I fell a little bit in love with John. This novel is beautifully written. The intensity and emotional punch of Alice and John’s love story is that it is told in retrospect – and though their tale is compellingly romantic, for the reader there is this constant, dreadful inkling of the tragedy they’ve experienced.
John O Farrell The Best A Man Can Get Black Swan £8.99
With O’Farrell’s trademark sardonic wit and observational humour, this book is essentially a reflective and tender tale of one man shaking off the last vestiges of being blokish to become a good husband and father. Michael has a perfectly nice home, child, baby and pregnant wife but of course doesn’t realise their worth until he’s about to lose them. Initially, “just being tucked up warm and cosy” is what Michael resists most. By the end of the novel, he embraces it as the best thing known to man.
Mary Wesley Not that Sort of Girl Vintage £8.99 This book inspired me to write. I love the way that Mary Wesley marries gentle romance with quite surprising sexiness in all her novels – but here in particular. Rose marries Ned and is extremely loyal to him whilst also carrying on a rampant relationship with the rather louche but wonderful Milo. And, being a tough cookie, she manages to keep this happy balance for over half a century. This novel is both feisty yet romantic at heart – it is not about duplicity, it is about dual constancy.
World Book Day 2011 World Book Day was designated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organiza tion) as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 90 years ago. Most other countries hold World Book Day on 23rd April every year , but the initiative is so well established in schools in the UK and so coincides with term time to really make the most of the opportunity to celebrate books and reading. World Book Day is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all. Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd and numerous participating booksellers, school children are entitled to receive a World Book Day £1 Book. The Book Token can typically be exchanged for one of the six specially published World Book Day £1 Books (where stocked and while stocks last), or is redeemable against any book or audio book of your choice at a participating bookshop or book club. World Book Day 2011 in the UK and Ireland will take place on Thursday 3rd March.
Jessica Adams | I’m A Believer | Black Swan £6.99 This is a book about love after death and life after love. It is jaunty and quite comic – but also very sensitively told. Mark Buckle, a scientist and bit of a sceptic, loses his girlfriend Catherine in a car crash. Soon enough, and initially much to his disbelief and displeasure, she ‘appears’ to him. Catherine becomes instrumental in helping Mark heal, move on and continue with his life. Have tissues close to hand! If you love the movie “Ghost”, you’ll adore this book.

The DS3 is also packed with technology to further entertain and assist the driver. For portable music players, the car can be kitted out with auxiliary, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. MyWay, Citroën’s integrated widescreen colour satellite navigation system, can be specified - and for excellent acoustic performance, a new eight-speaker Hi-Fi system creates a rich audio experience in the cabin. The Citroën DS3 is a great alternative to other ‘premium’ small cars like the Mini, Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo MiTo. It is also competitively priced, starting at just £12,100 for the petrol VTi 95hp DSign, rising to £16,300 for the top-of-the-range petrol THP 150hp and diesel HDi 110hp DSport models. The DS3 certainly doesn’t look like any other car on the road today – so if you’re in the market for a supermini, and being noticed is on the agenda, then this charismatic Citroën could be for you!

Citroën
DS3 DSport 1.6i 16V 150 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer It’s great to feel 17 years old again. That’s how I felt driving the Citroën DS3 – and it’s no bad thing because it shows that the French offering is a fun, funky and lively motor. All good things as far as I’m concerned. The 1.6i 16v 150 sport version, on test here, was a blast to drive. It rips up the black stuff with aggression and grips corners with ease. Its 17 inch alloy wheels let some road rumble into the cabin at speed and the interior is a bit cramped, but it’s no big deal, because the DS3 delivers such an engaging drive that you forget all about the niggles. However, the DS3 isn’t all about being a boy-racer. The car delivers a sophisticated and comfortable ride, and quality is evident inside and out. On the ever important safety front, the Citroën DS3 has a five star Euro NCAP rating for occupant protection; high levels of standard safety equipment include six airbags, a reinforced body structure and two IsoFix child seat anchorage points.

One of the best aspects of the compact Citroën is that it redefines ‘bespoke’ motoring with an unrivalled choice of personalisation options - to reflect each driver’s individual performance, style and technology preferences. That means no DS3 need ever be the same, thanks to the array of different option combinations available. Customers can specify exterior and interior colour variations, materials, finishes, trims and equipment - even the key fob is tailored to the driver’s chosen body or roof colour. So, the Citroën can be masculine and sporty or feminine and chic. My test car was in sport red and onyx black with ‘urban-tribe’ roof graphics, white wheels and a personalised number plate spelling out ‘BOY’. That was enough to satisfy me that I was in a more male oriented car!

Gorgeous felt style baskets can be tailored to your room style, so whilst they are practical, they look stylish too. Shelving can be coupled with baskets, or kept open if you’re a tidy person! The under stairs cupboard area can be a bit of a dumping ground. Only keep the essentials – be ruthless and make a decision to reduce, reuse and recycle!
Zip it Keep private information safe. People may not be who they say they are online. Your child should know not to give out information like; full name, photos, postal or email addresses, school information, mobile or home telephone numbers, details of places they like to spend time. Make sure your child knows that they shouldn’t arrange to meet people that they have only met online. Find out about privacy settings and use a nickname in chat rooms or on instant messaging services.
Block it Get your child to block people who send offensive messages and tell them not to open unknown links and attachments. One of the main ways children can come across inappropriate content online is through search results. Most search engines include a ‘safe search’ option that excludes results containing inappropriate images or key words. You can also install parental control software to filter out harmful and inappropriate content.
Flag it The final rule is that your child should come to you or a trusted adult if they are worried or unhappy about anything they see online. They should also do this if a friend they have made online has asked to meet them in the offline world. Ryan’s February Football Preview Please email ryan@semplesoccer.co.uk with any views you have and visit www.semple-soccer.co.uk for my response. Man United v Man City (Sat 12th) The Manchester derby has always been a big affair dating back to the 60’s when the likes of Best, Law and Charlton ruled the Old Trafford roost, but the neighbours the other side of Town City were always hot on their heels, winning the league in 1968, the year United won their 1st European Cup. Through the 70’s it was City the dominant force under Malcolm Allison and then Fast forward to the dawn of the Premiership and the dominance of Sir Alex Fergusons many sides at United to give him an unsurpassed 11 league titles. 2008 however marked what will hopefully be, (in City’s fans eyes anyway!) the beginning of a new successful era for the blue half of Manchester with the takeover of the club by Sheikh Mansour and his billions. At the time of writing United are sitting top spot with City in 3rd just 3 points behind. Boss Roberto Mancini has ridden out the early season criticism and with the players at his disposal, (Carlos Tevez has been incredible all season, Adam Johnson is showing signs he’s going to have a massive end to the year and new signing Edin Dzeko will be desperate to repay his £30m fee) they will fancy themselves to catch the leaders. On the other hand Man United have reached this point of the season without really getting out of 4th gear too often and as with tradition are now beginning to flex their muscles in the 2nd half of the season, giving me reason to believe this game is going to be a barn stormer! Yes I’m a United fan, (if you hadn’t guessed!) but I think Sir Alex’s men will be the winners, just. Having dropped 2 points at home all season, that coupled with the impressive new year form I believe will be enough. (My Prediction 2-1)
Posh Preview So Darren Ferguson has returned and 2 wins sandwiched between a far from disgraceful defeat to league leaders Brighton and all of a sudden things are looking up for the Posh again, I told you last month what a difference a month makes eh! Sitting in 5th but only 4 points off the automatic spots, (with 2 games in hand) they sit in a very strong position but February is going to be a tough month. 4 home games against Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tranmere and Colchester plus consecutive matches at Dagenham and Redbridge, Charlton and Yeovil will test the whole squad to the max but with new found optimism Posh will fancy themselves. If they can come out of this month still in the top 5 then fans can hopefully look forward to a positive last leg of the season.

Peterborough Town Sports Club With the weather abating there has been a good deal of activity with both outdoor and indoor hockey and squash restarting in earnest. There have been two notable personal achievements over the last couple of weeks. Dan Soar won the Cambs County Squash title for the first time. He beat club colleague Dan McGinn in the semis and then went on to beat Nottingham based Neil Rossin 3-2 in a thrilling final. This is a great achievement of which he can be rightly proud. At the Evening Telegraph Sports Awards Mike Yeoman was voted Coach of the Year. Mike has been working with young hockey players for many years now and over recent years the U16 and U18 boys sides have had unprecedented success regularly reaching the later stages of National Competitions both outdoor and indoor. With 9 games to go the men’s hockey 1st X1 are top of the league by 8 points having won 12 out of 13 games. Three good wins after Christmas has consolidated their position with main rivals Bedford falling away badly after the euphoria of beating City just before the break. It seems a place in the National league will be theirs unless they self destruct. There has also been some movement on the long running saga of the tennis merger with a planning application due to go in for additional tennis facilities. Indoor cricket nets have also started and so there is activity in all areas of the club. Peter Lambert
Phantoms back to winning ways! By Leandra Graves There was no rest for the Peterborough Phantoms ice-hockey club over the festive period. A succession of home and away matches ensured the boys worked as hard as ever into the start of a new year. From the four matches at home (at the time of writing) the Phantoms had won three of the four. They had dominated at Planet Ice against a very strong Basingstoke side, when they were victorious 4-0. A lively encounter took place against another top ranked team in Bracknell, with a 6-3 win. The smiles were back on the faces of the ‘Barmy Army’ supporters, as well as the players. Currently sixth in the table, there is still plenty of hard work to come in February and March, with some mouth watering fixtures against the clubs at the top of the table, Manchester and Guildford. If you think there is action on Dancing on Ice, you won’t be disappointed by the efforts of the city side (also known as the resident hardmen on ice)! February sees fixtures held on a Wednesday and Saturday, as well as the traditional early Sunday evening, so cheer the boys to climb up the table, to encourage their bid for the play-offs. Fixtures for February: Sun 6th Feb Home v Guildford 5.30 pm Sun 13th Feb Home v Swindon 5.30 pm Sat 19th Feb Home Guildford 7.00 pm Wed 23rd Feb Home v Manchester 7.00 pm
