What’s so special about birds? By Will Kirstein Education Officer - Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre
Nightingale – one of the worlds most famous songsters is also a common presence in poetry and human culture eg William Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Nightingale’ from 1798 or ‘Ode to a Nightingale’ by John Keates.
One of the highlights of my job is the contact that I have with members of the public. It provides an opportunity to meet people from other places and teach others about the wonders of the natural world. Naturally, being in regular contact with ‘’the public’’ leads to a huge range of questions being asked. We’ve had more then our fair share of questions over the busy bank holidays, but one in particular stands out.

Gadwall – Although it looks like just a duck, over 10% of North Western Europe’s Gadwall live at Rutland Water. They have helped the Reserve gain SSSI, RAMSAR and SPA Status.
From an ecological point of view birds play an active role in managing ecosystems. Many plants are dependent upon seed dispersal for successful regeneration and birds are major seed carriers. Some, as predators, feed on insects, amphibians, reptiles and

mammals and are important in keeping populations of these animals in check. Some species also act as pollinators; a hummingbird is a familiar example of this. Not only that but they also evolved from dinosaurs which must give them a certain cool factor!
The Ospreys attract over 30,000 visitors a year to Rutland; again the birds are unknowingly aiding us, this time providing an important economic boost to the county. While spending all day sitting in a bird hide looking through a pair of binoculars might not be every ones cup of tea, I think it would be hard to dispute the fact that birds play a part in the lives of almost every one and in my opinion that makes them pretty darn special.
Birds also have a huge presence in our lives and have been a part of human culture for centuries, as a food source, as pets, as sacred beings and figures in arts, poetry and films (The latest example being the blockbuster RIO). In Rutland their importance is immense. They are the reason Rutland Water

Four young people have joined the group so far which meets weekly on a Wednesday at Sutton Court, Werrington, Peterborough, run by Hyde Minster, part of The Hyde Group. Each week the young people cook a dish using ingredients which cost a maximum of ÂŁ5. So far they have created potato curry and poppadoms, vegetable stir fry and toad-in-the-hole. For sweet-tooth residents they have also baked a Victoria sponge cake and pineapple-upside-down cake. Long-term the group hopes to pull all their dishes together in a recipe book which can then be sold to raise money for charity.

hildren’s clothes this season are cute. Darn cute. Although don’t tell the kids that unless you like seeing your child rolling their eyes at you. Instead, take their mitt in your hand and take them round the shops, safe in the knowledge that there is little out there that you both won’t agree on. Take Next, for example, which has one of the most adorable dresses we’ve seen for a while – in fact, we wish this candy-sweet dress came in an adult size as it would be perfect for sunny afternoons with friends. For boys we particularly like the pink and green polo shirt, a good example of the bright colours available across the stores. Lovers of the acid bright trend this spring should take a peek at the Ladybird range at Very.co.uk – the yellow jumper is eye-wateringly fun, and matches Solillas's leather Balearic sandals (we also like the sky blue shoes from this great shoe company). River Island is achingly hip with funky jeans and checked shirt (and we wish we could spring into the

new season as well as the model), while over at French Connection kids have a great, if slightly pricier, range of sophisticated threads to choose from – its Jewel dress is especially stunning. Debenhams is always a good bet for child-friendly wear that will appeal to parents too, and we defy any little girl to not love its pink and black striped prom-style dress, while boys will welcome the light trousers as a good alternative to the ubiquitous jeans, or perhaps the more casual combatstyle shorts from M&S. As usual, trends seen in adult's clothes is reflected in childrenswear, with florals being a favourite with designers this season. Primark has a lovely floral playsuit, while Matalan has the perfect dress and shoes for your flower-fairies. The ultimate item for your little princess though has to be something related to the royal wedding – yup, there is no escape from the wedding madness, although Tu at Sainsbury's Hello Kitty t-shirt complete with crown and Union Jack manages to avoid being tacky – we love it.

I will outline three methods you can try... (If you are new to exercise ensure that you have prior approval from a medical professional)
METHOD 1 You need to complete a full body “weight” routine, hitting all major muscle groups. One catch, the weights you lift will need to be heavier than you traditionally do, 2-3 times heavier. Not for the faint hearted I know, but proven. Heavy lifting inflicts more damage to your muscle fibres, so they require more oxygen and energy to repair. A gradual approach can be adopted, by slowly increasing your weight over

better for the summer, but
METHOD 2
it’s going to be tough!
If you are able to train twice a day (i.e. morning and evening) your EPOC will be elevated. In the form of cardio sessions on either the exercise bike or rowing machine. Complete two 25-minute sessions at 75% of your maximum heart rate. If

By increasing the amount of oxygen your body uses during exercise, your body will burn more calories post exercise. After a hard training session your body will consume more oxygen than normal (by trying to return it, to its pre-exercise state). In Health and Fitness circles, this is known as Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC. Basically this will cause a spike in your metabolism and increase calorie burning for up to 48 hours!
25 minutes at 75% is too much of a challenge. Change the duration of your session and gradually build up to the 25 minutes, by increasing the time over a 4-week

REVIEW Riding high in the bestseller charts with her new novel, Chances, author Freya North tells us what she’ll be reading this month.
!"#$%&&$'"(#$)%#*+,$%-.$/""#0-1$ needs.... come to the experts
RACING THROUGH THE DARK by David Millar Orion £18.99
100’s of carpet Rolls & Remnants By his 18th birthday, David Millar was tipped to be the next Englishspeaking winner of the Tour de France. At 19, he’d signed with the professional racing team, Cofidis – who had a certain Lance Armstrong riding for them. I met David when he was 20 – eloquent, charming and full of passion for his sport, he assisted me in my research for my 4th novel Cat which was set around the Tour de France. Certainly I felt I’d met a man for whom a golden career beckoned. He went on to be the only British rider to have worn all the winners’ jerseys in the Tour de France as well as the leader’s jerseys in all three Grand Tours. Charismatic on the bike and off, he climbed the heights – and then, in 2004, he plumbed the depths. He was found guilty of doping and was
expelled from the sport, in disgrace for 2 years. (I remember him asking me to provide him with a reference for a job application in a bookshop during this time.) Seven years on, clean and reflective, Millar is now a key figure in the World Anti-doping Agency’s athletes committee and he rides brilliantly for team Garmin-Chipotle. This compelling autobiography is frank, full and brilliantly written – Millar holds nothing back in this account of his dark years. A fascinating insight into a sport synonymous with doping and the life lessons learned by this man. Riveting.
THE PERFECT HERO
I do like my cookery books – and I’ve reviewed a fair few on these very pages. This month, I’m all about East End Paradise – because it combines my love of food with my interest in using local, seasonal produce. This book shows how easy and enjoyable ‘kitchen garden cooking in the city’ really is – you honestly don’t need a massive vegetable garden or allotment. The author has an inner city allotment
As sweet, light and fluffy as a milkshake on a lovely summer’s day, The Perfect Hero suits the season wonderfully. Victoria Connelly, author of A Weekend With Mr Darcy, gives us a cast of characters that could have stepped right out of a Jane Austen novel and into contemporary times. Kay, the heroine, has used her inheritance to open a seaside B&B in Dorset. When a film crew descend on the town to film a production of Austen’s Persuasion, Kay is delighted. Not least because the dashing actor Oli Wade Owen will be staying under her very own roof
(a waste ground in the East End) – and all the recipes are based on ingredients she has grown. Sumptuously illustrated, the book is set out season by season, with an extra chapters on herb and edible flowers, and another on basics (jam making, pastries etc). The recipe for Damson vodka is a revelation.
during filming. Before long, Oli is turning his trademark charm on Kay whilst Kay is matchmaking between the lead actress Gemma and producer Adam . A gentle but jolly novel about fact and fantasy – and how we’re all a little startstruck by the film world. You’ll enjoy it.

Plant focus on Roses By Joseph Whitehead, www.gardenwiseadvice.com
Roses, that most quintessential English flower, its heavenly fragrance and beautiful blooms bringing joy to any garden. But wait, Oh no! Green bugs, black blotches, my roses what am I to do? Well never fear, ‘Garden scene is here’; here’s my quick guide to perfect roses.
r Mulch plant roots with any well rotted organic matter to conserve moisture.
r Add water retaining granules to container composts.
r Raise the height of the cut on your lawns.
¶ Black spot, mildew and aphids are the main problems you will encounter, treat when seen with a proprietary product from the garden centre. Healthy plants will fight off pest and diseases much more readily, so give your Roses a fortnightly foliar feed, spray the foliage with a seaweed based product with extra iron.
¶ Good fertility is key so feed with a slow release rose fertiliser once in April and !"#$#%&'"(%!"#$%&'((() )"'*%+,-%./%+"(01/$/2%*+,-+"%.%/0$1 311%4"'*%23040",55/ !"(015/#%45$6%1"+,1%.75125-8%'/871,$5"-# 9:;%"&%+"-</'#5"-#%2"%-"$%-//2%01,--5-8%0/'(5##5"311%.75125-8%+"-$'"1%,-2%01,--5-8%=5&%'/>75'/2?%2/,1$%45$6%5-@6"7#/% A-+'/,#/%B"7'%0'"0/'$B%<,17/%.B%,225-8%15<5-8%#0,+/%

again at the end of June.
r Hoe off any competing weeds. r Bath and washing up water can be used on the garden, except on fruit and veg. Water at the roots not on the foliage.
r Early morning and evening are the best time to water. Spay over foliage when watering.
¶ Ideally roses prefer a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds. ¶ Avoid planting roses on a site where roses have been recently planted before. ¶ Use a good deep mulch of well rotted organic matter to seal in moisture.
r Make saucer shaped dips around new plantings to avoid run off.

¶ At the end of the year rake up and remove fallen rose leaves. ¶ Roses are best planted in late Autumn/early winter, fork a bucket of compost into the planting hole and plant so the bud union is 2.5cm below the soil.

The rivalry between Apple and Blackberry continues as the release of the Blackberry Playbook draws closer. Looking surprisingly similar to the iPad, the Playbook seems (from my own, non-technical opinion), to do vaguely the same things as it. However, the Playbook currently only has 3,000 apps optimized for it, compared to the 65,000 for the iPad. On the other hand, the Playbook supports Flash video playback, which the iPad does not, and the Playbook is much more compact than the iPad, making it more convenient. At the moment I’m sitting on the fence, but it’s a bit too early to tell whether Blackberry or Apple will win this time around.

fathers day Fathers Day greets us each June, held on the third Sunday of the month. During the 1930’s in New York, a retail group began to promote the day through committees and councils. One of the founders of these groups could see the commercial potential for such as holiday, whereas Anne Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day, spent many years opposing the commercialisation of the day she helped to create. The day is usually celebrated through the act of giving gifts. Need some ideas?
