Peterborough Male Voice Choir has won two national EPIC awards from Voluntary Arts, the development agency for arts participation in the UK. It has won the Judges Award for innovation, engagement and creative development. It also came first in an online poll, voted the most popular arts group in England in the Peoples’ Award. The past two years have seen unprecedented growth for the choir, with the formation of two more choirs – the Ladies Choir, Peterborough Voices and the Peterborough Youth Choir. The choir took a great leap of faith in 2010 when it began the New Directions programme, led by their Director, Will Prideaux. Last year he took the choir to the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival, achieving third in their class, whilst Will received a special award for his contribution to choral conducting. The three choirs rehearse at St Mary’s Church, New Road, Peterborough PE1 1TT: The male voice choir on Monday evenings, the ladies choir “Peterborough Voices” on Tuesdays and the Youth choir on Wednesday after school. New recruits are welcome and contact the choirs through join@peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk, www.peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk

Funding boost to help curb fuel poverty amongst older people Green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) have joined forces with Peterborough City Council, The Salvation Army, and Age UK to launch a new three month project to stop winter-related deaths. Local residents people aged 75 and over are being encouraged to call 01733 882 544 (Monday to Friday 9am -5pm) and speak to a trained advisor for advice on how to prevent fuel poverty. As part of the initial phone call a home visit will be scheduled where residents can receive one-toone advice in the comfort of their own homes.

Pupils raise £3,714 for charity in one term Pupils at Nene Park Academy have raised £3,714 in one term for local charities though a series of wacky activities including, waxing their legs, a talent show, slave for a day and Christmas hair dos. Students took part in the global Movember event to raise money for prostate cancer by growing moustaches during the month of November. The school also organised events for Children in Need and a charities morning in the last week of term, where students could attend lessons in fancy dress. Each ‘house’ within Nene Park Academy chose a charity to raise funds for. Causes included the Alzheimer’s Society, Sue Ryder, White Feather Foundation, Macmillan Cancer and Cancer Research UK.

ORMISTON BUSHFIELD ACADEMY

Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival Launch!

Ormiston Bushfield Academy’s brand new building is currently under construction at Orton Centre, Peterborough. The £20.6 million project is set to be completed in July this year and includes a 524 sqm library, a purpose built dance and drama studio, a television studio, and an all-weather football pitch – all of which will be available for the wider community as well as pupils.

To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Dragon, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices has joined with Gable Events to launch the 14th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. The 2012 Festival takes place on Saturday 16th June on the River Nene at the Embankment, Peterborough and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. The event raised more than £200,000 for charity over the years. Boats have been swapped from the 17 person boat to the

smaller 11 person dragon boats. With reduced entry fees and multiple crew discounts for those companies wishing to enter more than one team, there’s never been a better year to get involved! EACH is the children’s hospice service for families in Peterborough and the surrounding area. They provide care and support wherever the family wishes – in families’ own homes, in hospital or at one of their hospices in Milton, Ipswich and Quidenham. www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough www.each.org.uk

Our story begins in December 2010 when construction first began. Fourteen months on, the building work is going strong. The outer shell of the Academy is now in place and the builders are turning their attention to landscaping, interior walls and sorting out the electrics! The extension to the sports centre and refurbishment of the existing changing rooms has now also been started. There is no doubt that the new building marks a brand new era for the school, providing an additional 200 places for students and with a wider range of facilities and a fantastic learning environment. We are all very excited and we’ve had our input on the layout, technology and colour scheme. We also put in our demands for arcades and swimming pools, although sadly to no avail! Next month we get to see how our suggestions have changed the final designs – I can’t wait.

Its not always just wardrobes that need cleaning out for spring; so now’s the perfect time to dump that crusty old mascara and buy your new spring look!

Chanel – Spring Make-Up I’ve been eagerly anticipating the new ‘Harmonie De Printemps’ spring make-up range from Chanel and finally it has arrived in stores and online. The new collection for cheeks, lips, eyes and nails uses the radiance of exhilarating colours: rose, coral and peach. There are new lip shades and lip-glosses, eye shadows, a glittery face powder, lip balm and a beautiful multi shade blusher palette. My favourites are the gorgeous limited edition nail polishes cutely named after the spring months April - light raspberry shade, May bright pastel pink and June a creamy soft peach – perfect with a tan. So get yourself down to your nearest Chanel counter before it all sells out. I highly recommend the Chanel counter in Boots – Queensgate, Bethany and Nisha are so friendly and helpful – they know their stuff.

REVIEW

Books on the big screen with Naomi - this month’s inspiration comes from TV & Film WAR HORSE

Michael Morpurgo Egmont Books £6.99

From master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo comes an incredibly moving story about one horse’s experience in the deadly chaos of the First World War.

In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of

the trenches, Joey’s courage touches the soldiers around him. A recent adaption for film (rated 12A), Steven Spielberg makes this a story not to miss.

NEW FACE OF WORCESTER Local installer, Stuart Brearley has become the new face of Worcester, Bosch Group’s latest advertising campaign, after being chosen by the leading boiler manufacturer in recognition of his continued business success and outstanding award entry. Stuart, who started his own business, Deeping Gas, in Peterborough, works and lives in the area and has been in the central heating industry since he started his career. Stuart is a Worcester Accredited Installer, and caught the judges’ eye with his passion for renewables. The competition, aimed at Worcester’s installers, asked them to send details of their most unusual Worcester installation and the most unique one would be in with the chance of being the future face of the advertising campaign which is supporting Worcester’s 50th anniversary year. Stuart’s winning award entry was from 2010, when he converted his existing Greenstar Highflow boiler to a system type boiler to accommodate a newly installed Worcester FKT ‘inroof’ solar package. After the work, Stuart measured the performance of the panels with results that were even a surprise to him, with the panels still providing some energy even on a cold overcast day. Deeping Gas & Electrical Services is a local family run business based in Market Deeping and covers a 50 mile

24

radius, and specialises in all aspects of heating/plumbing and electrical works. Stuart’s company boasts international experience in installing renewable technologies since 2003, having worked in Germany, Switzerland and Holland. During a full days photo shoot stint in Birmingham, Stuart had a number of photos taken that will be used throughout the year in the trade press and as part of the advertising for Worcester’s 50th anniversary year. Stuart said: “Getting involved with the advertising campaign was such a brilliant experience and so different to my day job. It was great to get an insight into how adverts are created. “Being the new Face of Worcester is a dream come true. I am very enthusiastic about the brand and its products, and won’t install anything else. “I choose to use Worcester because they always come out on top, and were recently voted number one in a Which? report for customer service. Not only that, but they have such a unique customer focus and a technical

services department that is second to none. On the rare occasion that I do have a problem - the award winning team is always on hand to talk through any of my queries, over the Stuart Brearley phone or via email. Worcester don’t just sell you a boiler, they sell you the whole package.” Sue Pennington, consumer brand manager at Worcester said: “Congratulations to Stuart, it is fantastic to have an installer who is extremely passionate about our renewable products as the Face of Worcester. Installers spread the word about new renewable technologies, and I am confident that Stuart will be a great ambassador for Worcester and our products.” Deeping Gas & Electrical Services Ltd is Gas Safe registered and also in the process of becoming MCS registered. Revision Websites Summer is (slowly) approaching, meaning that you might be thinking about revision for summer exams or mocks. Revision can be a daunting task, but trust me, it will pay off if you do it properly! Revision websites like www.getrevising. com are amazing for notes and will even help you to create a revision timetable. You have to register, but the site is free and definitely worth having a

The Hunger Games If you’ve read and love the books then you’ll be as excited as I am for the release of The Hunger Games film on March 23rd. Set in future North America, the story follows Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a young girl forced to fight for her life in the televised Hunger Games, set up as entertainment and intimidation to prevent rebellion. Competitors have no choice but to eliminate their opposition (literally) in order to survive themselves.

Gap Years If you don’t fancy going straight into a career or to university after finishing school, why not consider taking a gap year? It can gain you valuable experience if done properly, and give you a break before you start working towards a career. Money doesn’t need to be an issue either, as there are many ways of funding a year out, like finding jobs abroad. A gap year can look very impressive on a CV if spent wisely, and can really help to broaden your horizons and give you more independence. For more information, websites such as www.gapwork.com are useful.

Planning for the summer Yes, it is only March, but Summer will be here before you know it (I hope so, anyway!) If you’re planning on getting a job for the summer, then start sending off letters and CV’s as soon as possible – it’s better to do it now than realise later that it’s too late. If working isn’t in your plans for the holidays, and you want to spend your time at festivals instead, then lots of tickets are already out and some are on sale this month - make sure you look out for them so that you don’t end up missing out.

FAMILY & CRAFT Get the whole family out to exercise and fundraise for Sport Relief on Sunday 25th March Colourful & gorgeous yarn eggs Materials: Thin cotton yarn | Balloons | Craft glue 1. For each egg, cut twenty 3-foot-long strands of cotton yarn and blow up a balloon to a 6- to 8-inch diameter. Mix equal parts of glue and water in a shallow disposable container. 2. Cover your work area. Hold a strand of yarn by one end, dip it into the glue mixture, then wrap it around the balloon. Repeat with the other strands, randomly overlapping them and tucking in loose ends, until the balloon is evenly covered. 3. Suspend the balloon from a clothes hanger and let it dry overnight. (Cover the area below it with newspaper to catch drips.) Once the egg is completely dry, carefully poke a hole in the balloon, then pull it away from the string as it deflates. Hang your finished egg with ribbon or yarn.

Launched in the UK in 2009, the classy MiTo offered a refreshing alternative to its mainstream competitors. This was made possible by trendy good looks, the introduction of a host of new technologies, including Alfa Romeo’s dynamic control system (known as DNA), its award winning MultiAir engine technology, and a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. The latest 1.4 TB MultiAir 135 bhp ‘Distinctive’ (formerly Veloce) version I tested this week has, like all things Italian, bags of style. For me, the MiTo is a little cramped inside, but its looks are so seductive I really didn’t mind nearly

km and a combined fuel consumption of 50.4 mpg. The car has an athletic yet supple ride, with very little roll on corners. Key to this is the MiTo’s suspension layout: MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent layout with torsion beam at the rear. To emphasise the promptness of response, stability and control, even under extreme conditions, the MiTo’s track widths are among the widest in its class. The wheel rims are also broad in relation to the size of the tyres in order to optimise handling performance.
