£1 million fund now available for literacy projects
Welcome to the May edition of the City Scene!
The Clore Duffield Foundation has launched a new £1 million programme to fund poetry and literature initiatives for children and young people across the UK.
What glorious weather we’ve been enjoying and let’s all hope it continues. Our Garden Scene this month (p.39) is all about getting those vegetables planted, combating bugs & your ornamental garden.
The aim of the Poetry and Literature Awards is to provide children and young people with opportunities to experience poetry and literature in exciting and compelling ways, in and out of school.
The local community is continuing to flourish; we have updates on the Peterborough Lions (p.5), The Green Festival (p.13) and Foster Care Fortnight (p.7). With so many other features this month including Health & Beauty, Fitness, Motoring, Interiors (decluttering time!) and Travel you really must pull up a chair (in the garden on a beautiful Spring day!) and give yourself some ‘Scene time’.
The Awards will run from 2011 to 2015 and will allocate amounts up to £10,000 in two funding rounds a year. Energy-saving project shortlisted for top European award An energy-saving project that has helped hundreds of Peterborough families escape from fuel poverty has been shortlisted for a top European award. The ‘Warm Homes Peterborough’ project – run over two years by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) – has delivered energy-saving advice and practical help to 1,500 households in Dogsthorpe, Central Ward, Paston, Ravensthorpe and East Ward. Peterborough Lions Showtime 2011 Peterborough Lions Showtime is the biggest public social annual event for the club. It will be held again at the Parkway Club, Peterborough on 24 – 26 May 2011. More lives to be saved with extended flying hours
People living and working in the East of England will soon benefit from an extended daylight hour Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) thanks to the operational partnership of two air ambulance charities based in the East.
Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), work in partnership with East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) to ensure the six counties they serve (Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) are covered for a longer period.
The helicopters are tasked by the EEAST Clinical Coordination Desk located at Broomfield Hospital to attend incidents where patients require expert clinical care at the time they need it the most. Specially trained HEMS Doctors, Paramedics and life-saving support equipment feature on all four aircraft operated by the two charities and can be rushed to the scene of an incident, effectively bringing the hospital to the patient and enabling life-saving procedures to start at the earliest opportunity. All three organisations will work together to provide extended flying hours (from 7am to 9pm or sunset whichever is earlier) ensuring coverage of the Eastern region.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT FOSTERING DURING FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT People can find out more about fostering at a special event being hosted by Peterborough City Council during Foster Care Fortnight at the Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, on Thursday 19 May 2011 between 5pm and 7pm. Foster Care Fortnight takes place from Monday 16 May to Sunday 29 May 2011 and is the annual UK-wide campaign co-ordinated by the Fostering Network. It aims to raise awareness of fostering and encourage potential carers to come forward. The theme of this year’s event is ‘fostering: time to care’. People are invited to go along to the information evening and chat to Peterborough City Council’s fostering team and foster carers to find out more about fostering.

Simon Green, children in care services manager for Peterborough City Council, said: “Foster carers have a vital role to play in giving children in care the best possible start in life. If you have time to care and are able to help a child develop both emotionally and physically, you can experience the best rewards by giving a child or a young person a home. Training and support is provided on an ongoing basis. We will also need part-time carers for children with disabilities.” Foster carers receive support from the city council including regular visits from a dedicated fostering worker for ongoing information,
support and guidance and identify training and development needs. Training is also provided for new carers as part of their induction. Foster carers also receive an allowance for each child they foster which goes towards the care of the child. There is also a 24-hour staffed helpline where foster carers can talk to experienced fostering staff. There will also be two further events on Wednesday 29 June 2011 between 5pm and 7pm and on Thursday 28 July 2011 between 2pm and 4pm.

Wooden Spoon makes playtime fun for Phoenix School in Peterborough Playtime has been transformed for youngsters attending the Phoenix School in Peterborough with the opening of a new playground thanks to some determined fundraising from charity, Wooden Spoon. Phoenix School in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough has over 100 pupils and students from two to 19 year old who have a range of abilities and needs, not catered for in mainstream schools. With many of the School’s youngsters dependent on wheelchairs for mobility the
layout and equipment of the new playground was going to be costly. As a charity, Wooden Spoon’s mission is to improve the quality of and life prospects for children and young people who are physically and mentally disadvantaged and so its Eastern Counties’ branch stepped-in to help with £25,000. The donation from Wooden Spoon meant that specialist equipment makers, GL Jones designed the new play area which includes swings and a roundabout to which wheelchairs can be fixed.

New Academy in Peterborough Greenwood Academies Trust has been chosen as the preferred partner to run a new academy on Reeves Way at the former Hereward Community College in Peterborough. The trust will work closely with Peterborough City Council to put together a bid to the government to open the school as a Free School from September 2013. Greenwood Academies Trust was selected because of its strong history of improving outcomes in challenging schools, its experiences of working with multiethnic groups and for its overall vision for the school.
The new school will be co-educational and will cater for up to 850 pupils aged from 11 to 18 years. It will have a city-wide catchment, a strong community focus and will work closely with post-16 education providers such as Peterborough Regional College, City College Peterborough and a future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre to ensure young people can access post 16 courses relevant to their learning needs and career aspirations. An application to run the Reeves Way school as a Free School is expected to be submitted to the government by mid-May. The final decision rests with the Education Secretary Michael Gove and is expected in the autumn.
Wittering Primary is a good school where children flourish, behave outstandingly and achieve above the national average in English and maths, according to Ofsted inspectors. Inspectors visited the school on Church Road, Wittering, Peterborough, in March and rated it good overall with a good capacity for sustained improvement. Of the 31 categories the school was inspected in, 20 were judged to be good and 11 outstanding. The school’s early years foundation stage was rated outstanding as well as the behaviour of pupils, the extent to which pupils feel safe, and the care, guidance and support pupils receive. Inspectors found that there is a positive atmosphere at the school which is borne out of good relationships between adults and pupils. Overall the quality of teaching was rated good. Consistently good teaching ensures that by the time pupils leave the school attainment is above average in English and maths. Inspectors noted that this is good considering most pupils arrive at the school with skills below those expected for their age. The Ofsted report in full is available at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Peterborough Green Festival 2011 Celebrating 20 years! Peterborough gets ready for two weeks of fun filled, green themed events between Saturday 28th May and Sunday 12th June. This year’s Peterborough Green Festival is set to kick off on Saturday 28th May and will mark the 20th anniversary of the event in the city. Run by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), most events are free to take part in and whilst the full line-up is still being confirmed, organisers from the charity are aiming to provide something for everyone. Each year there is a theme for the Green Festival and this year PECT is partnering with Travelchoice to encourage everyone to car share, walk, cycle, and use public transport to save money, get fit, and help the environment. The launch event on Saturday 28th May, held in Cathedral Square, will feature a host of stalls, stands, activities, entertainments, music, games, competitions, and give-aways. There will also be a stage-bus (a working bus that will transform into the main stage),

After more gorgeous creams and lotions to moisturise my stems, Gina then wrapped my feet in warm booties to make sure the lotions really penetrated my skin. Then a trim, file and shape and off to the rack of OPI varnish to choose my colour. I went for a French polish for the spring...... Oh what treat and all for £30!! Take 3/4cm long cuttings just below a leaf joint and pinch out the tips. Bottom heat from a propagator is the single best way to increase chances of rooting. • Divide your Hostas as they come into growth.
On the veg patch • Carry on hardening off plants ready to be planted out in their final positions towards the end of the month. • Plant all main crop potatoes early in the month, also get sweet corn and runner beans going early in modules.

Pest and disease watch! • Watch out for little green Gooseberry Sawfly caterpillars that can defoliate a bush in a weekend! Pick off and feed to your garden robin. •
As lilies romp skywards beware of pretty red Lily Beetles. The beetle’s larvae have a nasty habit of covering themselves in their own excrement to resemble a bird dropping whilst munching leaves! Pick off beetles if spotted and blast off larvae with a hose pipe.
The Chelsea chop Not an annual cull of any dodgy gardening presenters, but a pruning method used to control flowering time and size of tall herbaceous plants that can flop and be difficult to support eg Anthemis, Echinacea, Sedums, Phlox and Achillea. At Chelsea time (end of May) cut back plants by half, water and feed to produce shorter bushier plants with more flowers.

Britain’s Got Talent meets Knight Rider This is a definite, ‘ask your Dad’ moment. Who was Knight Rider?? Well if you’re tuned into Britain’s Got Talent and see one of the new judges, David Hasselhoff, that’s Knight Rider. Back in the 80’s, television was awash with fast cars and chases through downtown US cities. The car in this one was KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand), the coolest car ever created (at the time) equipped with AI capable of getting almost anyone out of any sticky situation, particularly it’s driver Michael Knight. Family & Craft Scene Potato planting with the children You don’t need a allotment or large space in the garden to grow potatoes. Bags or sacks are ideal and fun for the kids too! You can buy a kit from the garden centres which includes a few bags and the tubers (see potatoes).

In each bag, place five tubers on top of 15- 20cm of good quality compost. Then cover with a further 10cm of compost. As the shoots start to appear through the compost, add most compost on top to keep the potato covered. Repeat this until the compost is a few centimetres below the top of the bag. Keep the soil moist, but not saturated.
There are many varieties available now, but if you’re growing in just a few bags then the first earlies may suit you best. They are best harvested in small quantities & eaten straight away.

East of England Show Preview The 2011 East of England Show will once again see the Showground filled to the gunnels with horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, food, music, attractions, trade stands and much, much more. THORPE WOOD DRIVES FORWARD The team at Thorpe Wood Golf Course are celebrating news that planning consent has been granted from the city council to construct a brand new state of the art driving range at the popular Peterborough facility. And they are not hanging around as work has already begun on site to reposition the 14th hole of the course in order to make space for the

new building which it’s hoped will be constructed between September and November of this year for an opening in early December.
