The only remaining part of the original building is the front which has been listed as a Garde II building. Holy Voley and a touch of pink Mink are excellent swimmers and are able to dive under water and follow the voles into their burrows. This means the burrow, which is a safe haven form predators such as herons, is rendered useless and the vole is a sitting duck in its tunnel. It is estimated that a single female mink can kill 50 – 100

voles in one breeding season thus it is clear why they have been so disastrous for vole populations. There are now various mink control programmes in action around the country in an effort to reduce the damage they are causing to our native wildlife – thankfully Rutland staff have found no presence of mink in the area -so for now the voles have a relatively safe haven.

Once common and widespread throughout the UK, the voles have vanished from over 94% of their former range, a decline that exceeds that of the Otter! As a result of this decline Water Voles are now protected under the Wildlife and Country Side Act and various conservation groups around the country are working hard to restore the vole population. Habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and intensification of farming methods have all led to a decline in vole numbers. It was the arrival of the

PLEA FOR PEOPLE TO CONSIDER ADOPTION DURING NATIONAL WEEK Have you considered adopting a child but then put it to the back of your mind? Do you have a loving home which you could offer a child in need of adoption? Peterborough City Council is appealing for people to find out more about adopting a child or young person to coincide with National Adoption Week which takes place from Monday 31 October 2011 until Sunday 6 November 2011. Families are needed for children of any age in the Peterborough City Council area and also further afield. Richard Marsh, senior practitioner within Peterborough City Council’s adoption service, said: “There is a real need to identify families outside of the city council area who are able to adopt children whose circumstances mean they can no longer remain with their birth parents. Quite often children need to be placed

away from their birth families and this means finding families in the outlying areas. If you have a friend or family member who lives just outside the city council area who has previously mentioned adoption, please ask them to get in touch.” Typically, the city council needs to find 20 to 30 homes for adoptive children each year. Homes are needed for children of all ages and there is also a need for people who can adopt sibling groups, children with disabilities or health problems and children from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. The process of identifying, assessing and approving new adopters happens throughout the year so expressions of interest are welcomed from prospective adopters at any time. People from all walks of life can adopt, including people who are single, couples with or without children and same sex couples. You do need to be over 21, but there is no upper age limit. The city council’s adoption team can provide helpful advice, guidance and support throughout the whole process resulting in a fulfilling, satisfying and successful new family life for both the adoptive parents and the adopted child. For more information and an informative booklet, call (01733) 317448 or visit: www.familieswanted.co.uk.

Invisalign Braces I’ve always wanted perfect teeth and was torn between veneers or a brace, so earlier this year I attended an Invisalign open evening at the Smile Boutique in Peterborough. I was amazed how this unnoticeable piece of plastic could naturally transform my teeth into a perfect smile in 12 months, so I was sold. After a consultation I went to pick up my first set of Invisalign clear braces. How it works is that you wear one set of braces (one upper, one lower) for 22 hours a day for 2 weeks then you swap for your next set and so on. At first it felt unusual to be wearing what I describe as a really thin gum shield and you have to take them out when you eat and drink, but after a few sets it feels completely normal. I’ll report back in February when I’m half way through my treatment to tell you how I’m getting on! HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY So it’s time to start thinking about the party outfit for the festive season. Not far behind ‘What am I going to wear? is usually, I need to shape up. So this month we bring you some ideas on burning up those extra calories. • Walk the dog, or borrow a friends dog, and walk faster than you usually

would. Alternate faster walking with a gentle pace to raise your heart rate.

• Dust off your bike and pop to the shops for your Sunday paper. • Book a badminton court and persuade a few friends to join you. • Spring clean your house for an hour....two birds with one stone! • Tidy up your garden. • Learn to play squash or racketball – a perfect indoor sport for the winter months.

HOME & GARDEN

Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

With the chilly days now upon us our gardens retreat into winter dormancy; that’s if the heat wave we are experiencing as I write this has not continued! Contrary to popular belief, leafing through seed catalogues in front of a warm fire is not the only job on the list during the winter months, so don’t hang your gardening gloves just yet!

HEADS FRONT AND CENTRE! With limited rations of colour and flower, winter wonder can be sort in the form of attractive stems and seed heads, and with a sparkle of icy frost they can bring beauty to any winter garden.

7 Winter Treats 1. Eryngium giganteum Silvery blue thistle known as ‘Miss Willmotts’ ghost, a wintry look even in summer. 2. Dipsacus fullonum Our native teasel, fine architectural seed heads much loved by gold finches

3. Phlomis russeliana All the Phlomis have great whorls of seed heads that stand well against cold weather. 4. Echinacea purpurea Dazzling in flower and graceful in death. 5. Solidago gigantean Arching stems, add a touch of class! 6. Stipa gigantean All grasses give that great extra element of movement. 7. Sedum ‘Hertstfreude’ With wide flat seed heads all sedums stand well and look great with a touch of frost.

If you have a glass house, cold frame or cloche keep that fresh salad coming and sow winter varieties of lettuce, eg ’Winter density’ or ‘Frosted curls’. Clear remaining debris from your plot and continue soil cultivation. Plant new bare root fruit and any ornamental trees as soon as they arrive. Finish planting garlic in situ or into modules if the ground is to wet. Spray peaches and nectarines against peach leaf curl.

In exposed sites prune back roses to prevent wind rock. Rake up all your leaves and heap up turning the pile once or twice through next year to make your own fabulous leaf mould. Great time to plant tulips to reduce the risk of fugal disease. Prune plants that bleed during the growing season like, Acers, Walnuts, fig and vines. Check tree guards are in place to prevent rabbit damage.

our homes – some people just have more than others. Keeping your home free from clutter is no easy task but it can be done and it can be maintained. Living in a de-cluttered, well organised space can help to bring peace and harmony to your home and can instantly improve your lifestyle…

Time to de-clutter? What is clutter? Clutter can consist of many different things. It can be:• things that you haven’t used for years, but keep hold of ‘just in case’. • impulse purchases that you cost so much, you just have to hold on to them. • an expensive item of clothing that you have only worn once, or not at all! • old make-up and dried up pots of nail varnish. • hordes of empty jam jars that ‘might’ come in useful one day. • broken objects that you ’will’ get round to fixing soon. • unwanted presents. This list goes on, but basically clutter is really anything that you do not use, need, wear, refer to or like.

Effect of clutter We often find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of excess baggage we have managed to accumulate over time, and in some cases this can affect how we feel about our home. Living in an unorganised mess can have a diverse effect on how we operate throughout the day – not being able to find a clean work shirt or the car keys when you are already running late can often lead to feelings of stress and not being in control.

32

November 2011 | Email: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

If you have allowed clutter to build, your home will no longer be the place where you can recharge your battery and relax; it will start to feel oppressive and depressing and before long you avoid being there and having people round.

Dealing with clutter Tackling clutter can seem an impossible task if you don’t know where or how to start. The first step is to assess the amount of clutter you have. If you are a compulsive hoarder then you may find it easier to call in the professionals. If you just allow clutter to take over specific rooms or areas of your home, then it really is a matter of being more organized and stricter on yourself and your family. Before starting your task, have allocated areas for the items you are throwing/

shred

it!

recycling. It will be easier if you can place the items straight into cardboard boxes or black bags labeled charity shops, car boot, eBay etc. as this avoids any opportunity for second thoughts. Start in one room. Allow yourself at least a day. Decide where you are going to start and work methodically. Be sensible and understand that it will take time. With every item that you pick up ask yourself the following questions - Do I need this? Do I use this? Do I like this? As you decide what you want to keep and remove you may go through different emotions of relief and guilt– this is normal so don’t let it deter you.

Do’s and don’ts Any sentimental items that you want to keep, package safely and securely before placing in the loft.

through old bills and junk mail. Once you have decided on the things you no longer need, make sure you get them out of the house as soon as possible. Take unwanted items to a local charity shop, or see if any family member or friend wants to take them off your hands. If you want to make some money, go along to a local car boot sale or advertise bigger items in your local paper or community magazine.

Benefits This new amount of storage space you have discovered with be such a change for you, so stay in control by making sure there is a place for everything and everything in its place. If you don’t, you will soon find yourself back in the same situation. Dealing with things as they appear will help to keep your space organized so make sure all family members are behind your efforts. Once you have de-cluttered you will be amazed at the sense of relief it brings. You will feel that you are finally in control of your home again, not the other way around and as a result a more relaxed and welcoming home will appear. And the best thing of all? You will now have a house that almost seems to tidy itself!

DON’T keep hold of any items that you ‘were’ going to get round to fixing. DON’T feel guilty if you are getting rid of unwanted presents – just let it go! Invest in a small shredder to help whip Telephone: 01780 783613 | November 2011

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in my eyes the latest Passat Estate is more appealing than the saloon. But it’s not all about appearance because the VW is also a practical, refined, comfortable and economical car to drive. Indeed, the Passat is established as a firm favourite with UK buyers, with over 600,000 examples having found homes here since it arrived on the scene in 1973. The seventh generation Passat is the most advanced iteration yet with every model fitted with special sound insulating windscreen glass and new sound deadening materials to make it one of

Of course, improving safety in cars is vital, but developing cleaner, greener engines is equally important to motor manufacturers - and VW is no exception. That’s why the German company’s diesel engines are now badged as BlueMotion products (why not GreenMotion?) and they are equipped with battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems as standard. The result is that the Passat, on test here in SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS DSG guise, is capable of 54.3 mpg and emits only 135 g/km CO2. That’s pretty good going when you consider the car is fitted with a six-speed auto gearbox (with very handy flappy paddles behind the wheel).

Wolverhampton Wanderers V Wigan Athletic, (6th Nov) The Premier League is barely a third of the way through but already this fixture is a full blooded ‘6 pointer’ with both teams having taken only 7 and 5 points respectively out of a possible 24 (at the time of writing). Wigan began the season relatively well, recording 1 win and 2 draws which boss Roberto Martinez would have happily taken before the campaign got under way. Since then though they have lost 5 in 5 which makes the clash with what many would see as fellow relegation candidates in Wolves all the more important. Similarly Mick McCarthy’s side began the season well, better in fact winning 2 from the first 3 matches. Since then, losses at home to Tottenham and new boys QPR as well as defeats to Liverpool and Newcastle before the heartache of a midlands derby humbling at West Brom make this match as important for them as it is to the Latics. Expect goals and some tasty tackles.

Chelsea V Liverpool, (20th Nov) As always this is a standout fixture in the Premier League between two of the heavyweights of the division. At the time of writing both teams will be pretty satisfied with their starts to the season. Chelsea took a step into the relative unknown with manager Andre Villas Boas and their faith in youth, (management wise not playing!) has so far paid off with the Portuguese taking the blues to just 3 points off the top. Liverpool have had a solid start apart from their capitulation at Tottenham and Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish has transformed their fortunes in his 10 months in charge. With both teams looking to now make assaults to de-thrown the two Manchester clubs who have relentlessly set the early season pace at the top, 3 points would be of massive importance as well as giving themselves huge confidence going forwards.
