Welcome to the November edition of the Community Scene There’s just a hint of Christmas this month in the Scene, as we look at preparations for advent on the Family & Craft page (p.40). Also there are a few Christmas shopping opportunities coming up with craft fairs and markets (p.52). Our Garden Scene this month leads us to the colourful opportunities there are for our gardens, (p.28). If the chilly garden makes you think about warmer climates, then drift away and read our travel pages this month as we whisk you off to Magical Morocco, (p.46). Our active communities are featured this month on pages 5 through to 13. Don’t forget to send through your community news and events to naomi@scenepublishing.co.uk

COMMUNITY
Waitrose stores across the UK have supported local communities for several years now through the Community Matters scheme. Three local charities or community groups are selected each month. Customers are given a green token when they shop, which allows them to vote for the group of their choice. At the end of the month, the tokens are weighed and £1,000 is divided according to the distribution of the token weight. Customers can also recommend a charity/cause by simply filling in the form available on the welcome desk and handing it in to a welcome desk partner. Stamford Branch support in 2011 has included;
Hanover Housing Charitable Housing offers affordable retirement housing for over 60’s. The residents of Hanover Court, Star Lane, Stamford are currently trying to raise funds to improve areas of the garden for those frailer and with mobility issues.

DEEPING FIRST RESPONDERS Anglia Co-operative shoppers in Market Deeping have given a helping hand to a group of volunteers providing life-saving medical assistance. They handed over almost 20,000 till receipts, each worth 1p donated by the Co-op, during the six-week fundraising campaign for Deeping First Responders – netting £200 for the charity that provides vital medical help at emergency calls prior to the arrival of an ambulance. The Deeping responders attend over 200 emergencies each year and, as a self-funded group, have to raise around £2,500 each year to keep going. The money will go towards the training of two new responders and towards extra oxygen needed at emergency call-outs.

Beautiful Gardens
The beer garden is the idyll spot to while away those long summer nights. Surrounded on 3 sides by our amazing vine covered gazebo, character abounds. Our Carp pond is the perfect centre point, filled by a babbling brook from a mini waterfall and shaded in the evening by our very own Pear tree. With piped music to set the mood it’s a wonderful feature of the hotel. On the other side of the beer garden is the best bit of all; a large, secure play area for kids. With climbing frames, swings, a slide and lots of open lawn, the kids will be more than happy to play for hours while the Mums and Dads enjoy the peace and quiet.
Here at The Baskervilles we have it all. From creating the perfect wedding day, the Christening of your new pride and joy, birthday celebrations, gala dinners, Superleague Darts and more formal conference facilities. Our staff are here to help. We hope you have a pleasant time and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

WILL MY HOME BE SOLD TO FUND MY CARE?
With the subject of funding Long Term Care being the latest political hot potato, it is more difficult than ever to understand the situation as it currently stands. It has long been agreed that the funding of Long Term Care, which currently forces 70,000 people every year to sell their home, is an issue of considerable concern. The truth is, if the total value of your wealth, including your home, exceeds £23,250 (in England), you will have to meet the costs of your own residential care in full. These costs could escalate to more than £30,000 per annum and could see a sizeable estate wiped out in a very short space of time – not quite what you envisaged through years of saving perhaps.
The good news is you have a choice By arranging your legal affairs, you can plan and protect your home and wealth and ensure you pass as much as possible to your loved ones in the fullness of time. Collective Legal Solutions have already helped many concerned home owners in Stamford, The Deepings, Bourne and Rutland gain peace of mind. For more information without obligation, contact us on 0800 110 5221 quoting reference 9793.
IF I CAN’T WHO WILL? Q. What will happen if I can’t manage my own financial affairs due to accident or illness? A. Joint assets (including bank accounts) can be frozen and property cannot be sold, leaving loved ones extremely vulnerable.
Q. So what would my family need to do? A. A lengthy, costly and intrusive court process will follow. In the interim, your spouse/family may be left in limbo, without access to funds whilst the bills pile up.
Q. What’s the solution? A. By planning for such scenarios in advance, you can put the appropriate legal measures in place to have your spouse/ family take over the running of your affairs with minimum fuss, expense and delay. The simple step of creating a Lasting Power of Attorney will save time and money and will allow you to appoint those you trust to help at a time of need.
“We all know how important it is to plan for the future. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)… in place should be as common and natural as making a Will. It ensures that a person of your choosing will be able to manage your affairs should you lose capacity, be it as a result of dementia, mental illness or an accident.” Jack Straw, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice

HYPNOTHERAPY FOR MOTIVATION We live in a fast paced 24/7 society & sometimes in our personal & professional life we are looking for motivation to achieve our goals. Using professional hypnosis for motivation is becoming a popular choice for individuals & corporate companies. There are several main principals behind using hypnosis for motivation, and the most important is to achieve control over the conscious mind. It can be extremely difficult to set goals and aspirations when your mind is wandering and you’re not fully “connecting” in the current moment. In a typical bespoke therapy programme, we will work on techniques developing your relaxation, concentration & visualization skills as these are the basic foundations for more advanced techniques. Once you’ve managed to attain a state of relaxation you’re ready to move onto the visualizations.... This will vary for whatever your goals & desires are, however the basis is to get familiar with the feeling that achieving the goals would bring about & the feelings you need to utilise to get the required action. So let’s say your goal is to run a marathon...... an effective visualization would be to go over the entire race from start to finish & to experience first hand what it will feel like in it’s entirety....when you finally reach the finish line and see your loved ones cheering and proud....REMEMBER the SECRET here is that through hypnosis/unconscious mind we get you to REALLY think about how you want to feel throughout the race to increase your motivation in abundance.
This is only one of numerous possible scenarios of using hypnosis for motivation.....If your goals are business orientated then we would work on you visualizing yourself as CEO or other high ranking member of the company, maybe conducting board room meeting....utilising the powers of hypnosis....getting you to imagine yourself feeling confident, effective, charismatic and ambitious. SO...if YOU want to master the art/techniques of hypnosis...... contact me now to arrange your FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION to discuss my therapy training session/programme at no obligation......

Jane Rawlinson, the owner of The Beauty Spot at Sunnyside House, Elsea Park, Bourne, is now offering the greatest craze in nail fashion and her clients are going mad for it. So, I decided to find out what all the fuss was about, and as I was going off on holiday, I opted to have a pedicure and Pink Minx nails. The British Osteopathic Association’ warns parents and teachers to think about the effect of heavy school bags on children’s health. For the recent Back Care Awareness week, the British Osteopathic Association is calling for parents and teachers to consider the health implications of small bodies carrying heavy school bags. Heavy bags can put pressure on the discs between the vertebrae which can cause long term back pain in small and still-developing bodies and children can suffer muscular pain, headaches, tingling and numbness in the arms and legs and even mobility problems. Children should never carry more than about 15% of their own body weight. Parents can help by packing their children’s rucksacks and making sure that the heavier items are nearer to the child’s back. Heavier items on the outside of the bag tend to throw out the child’s centre of gravity out of balance, which leads to bad posture and increases the chances of them straining their back.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in my eyes the latest Passat Estate is more appealing than the saloon. But it’s not all about appearance because the VW is also a practical, refined, comfortable and economical car to drive. Indeed, the Passat is established as a firm favourite with UK buyers, with over 600,000 examples having found homes here since it arrived on the scene in 1973. The seventh generation Passat is the most advanced iteration yet with every model fitted with special sound insulating windscreen glass and new sound deadening materials to make it one of
Of course, improving safety in cars is vital, but developing cleaner, greener engines is equally important to motor manufacturers - and VW is no exception. That’s why the German company’s diesel engines are now badged as BlueMotion products (why not GreenMotion?) and they are equipped with battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems as standard. The result is that the Passat, on test here in SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS DSG guise, is capable of 54.3 mpg and emits only 135 g/km CO2. That’s pretty good going when you consider the car is fitted with a six-speed auto gearbox (with very handy flappy paddles behind the wheel).

HOME & GARDEN
Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com
With the chilly days now upon us our gardens retreat into winter dormancy; that’s if the heat wave we are experiencing as I write this has not continued! Contrary to popular belief, leafing through seed catalogues in front of a warm fire is not the only job on the list during the winter months, so don’t hang your gardening gloves just yet!
HEADS FRONT AND CENTRE! With limited rations of colour and flower, winter wonder can be sort in the form of attractive stems and seed heads, and with a sparkle of icy frost they can bring beauty to any winter garden.
7 Winter Treats 1. Eryngium giganteum Silvery blue thistle known as ‘Miss Willmotts’ ghost, a wintry look even in summer. 2. Dipsacus fullonum Our native teasel, fine architectural seed heads much loved by gold finches
JOBS FOR THE MONTH
Kitchen garden
Ornamental garden
• If you have a glass house, cold frame or cloche keep that fresh salad coming and sow winter varieties of lettuce, eg ’Winter density’ or ‘Frosted curls’. • Clear remaining debris from your plot and continue soil cultivation. • Plant new bare root fruit and any ornamental trees as soon as they arrive. • Finish planting garlic in situ or into modules if the ground is to wet. • Spray peaches and nectarines against peach leaf curl.

In exposed sites prune back roses to prevent wind rock. Rake up all your leaves and heap up turning the pile once or twice through next year to make your own fabulous leaf mould. Great time to plant tulips to reduce the risk of fugal disease. Prune plants that bleed during the growing season like, Acers, Walnuts, fig and vines. Check tree guards are in place to prevent rabbit damage.

3. Phlomis russeliana All the Phlomis have great whorls of seed heads that stand well against cold weather. 4. Echinacea purpurea Dazzling in flower and graceful in death. 5. Solidago gigantean Arching stems, add a touch of class! 6. Stipa gigantean All grasses give that great extra element of movement. 7. Sedum ‘Hertstfreude’ With wide flat seed heads all sedums stand well and look great with a touch of frost.

our homes – some people just have more than others. Keeping your home free from clutter is no easy task but it can be done and it can be maintained. Living in a de-cluttered, well organised space can help to bring peace and harmony to your home and can instantly improve your lifestyle…

Time to de-clutter? What is clutter? Clutter can consist of many different things. It can be:• things that you haven’t used for years, but keep hold of ‘just in case’. • impulse purchases that you cost so much, you just have to hold on to them. • an expensive item of clothing that you have only worn once, or not at all! • old make-up and dried up pots of nail varnish. • hordes of empty jam jars that ‘might’ come in useful one day. • broken objects that you ’will’ get round to fixing soon. • unwanted presents. This list goes on, but basically clutter is really anything that you do not use, need, wear, refer to or like.
Effect of clutter We often find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of excess baggage we have managed to accumulate over time, and in some cases this can affect how we feel about our home. Living in an unorganised mess can have a diverse effect on how we operate throughout the day – not being able to find a clean work shirt or the car keys when you are already running late can often lead to feelings of stress and not being in control.

If you have allowed clutter to build, your home will no longer be the place where you can recharge your battery and relax; it will start to feel oppressive and depressing and before long you avoid being there and having people round.
Dealing with clutter Tackling clutter can seem an impossible task if you don’t know where or how to start. The first step is to assess the amount of clutter you have. If you are a compulsive hoarder then you may find it easier to call in the professionals. If you just allow clutter to take over specific rooms or areas of your home, then it really is a matter of being more organized and stricter on yourself and your family. Before starting your task, have allocated areas for the items you are throwing/

recycling. It will be easier if you can place the items straight into cardboard boxes or black bags labeled charity shops, car boot, eBay etc. as this avoids any opportunity for second thoughts. Start in one room. Allow yourself at least a day. Decide where you are going to start and work methodically. Be sensible and understand that it will take time. With every item that you pick up ask yourself the following questions - Do I need this? Do I use this? Do I like this? As you decide what you want to keep and remove you may go through different emotions of relief and guilt– this is normal so don’t let it deter you.
Do’s and don’ts Any sentimental items that you want to keep, package safely and securely before placing in the loft.
through old bills and junk mail. Once you have decided on the things you no longer need, make sure you get them out of the house as soon as possible. Take unwanted items to a local charity shop, or see if any family member or friend wants to take them off your hands. If you want to make some money, go along to a local car boot sale or advertise bigger items in your local paper or community magazine.
Benefits This new amount of storage space you have discovered with be such a change for you, so stay in control by making sure there is a place for everything and everything in its place. If you don’t, you will soon find yourself back in the same situation. Dealing with things as they appear will help to keep your space organized so make sure all family members are behind your efforts. Once you have de-cluttered you will be amazed at the sense of relief it brings. You will feel that you are finally in control of your home again, not the other way around and as a result a more relaxed and welcoming home will appear. And the best thing of all? You will now have a house that almost seems to tidy itself!
DON’T keep hold of any items that you ‘were’ going to get round to fixing. DON’T feel guilty if you are getting rid of unwanted presents – just let it go! Invest in a small shredder to help whip Telephone: 01780 783613 | November 2011

Advent Calendars The origins of the Advent calendar come from Germany, at least as early as the beginning of the 19th century. The calendar typically counts from the first day of December, as opposed to the start of advent which is on the fourth Sunday before 25 December. If you’re ready to start planning for Christmas, what about testing your creative skills on a homemade advent calendar. Sounds a bit daunting?.....never! Here are some simple ideas, touching on a few popular crafts.
