MARCH 2012

Welcome to the March edition of the Community Scene. Spring has sprung, as we see snowdrops, daffodils and buds appearing in our gardens and on local walks. It’s time to get out in the garden and also outside to exercise. Our garden guru Joe, from Gardenwise, is guiding us this month to prepare borders for the new season ahead (p25). Everything has been so dormant over the cold months, but every week you’ll see changes in the garden. Fitness wise, so many of us are fair weather runners, so after your winter rest make sure you look at our fitness page (p30) to help get yourself running fit. Family and Craft is about preparing for Easter and even the Diamond Jubilee too! (p36). On the big screens and our TV screens so many fabulous books have come to life lately. Our book pages this month make for a great gift list (p43). Finally, our competition with Sacrewell Farm this month gives you the chance to win a family ticket – get colouring! (p44 & 45). A HANDFUL OF HARMONIES SINGS OUT LOUD A Handful of Harmonies is a hobby with a difference! The newly established group aims to give women from 16 to 70+ the opportunity to share the joy of music with like-minded people in a fun and creative environment.

won’t ever be asked to sing alone! All members have support materials available to them in the online member’s area which includes audio samples, video and recordings of group performances.

Weekly sessions, under the instruction of an experienced Natural Voice Practitioner and registered British Voice Association teacher, provides opportunities for performers to sing in harmony, discover new techniques and improve musicality, understanding and appreciation of music. No previous experience is required but enthusiasm is a must! New members don’t audition, you don’t need to be able to read music and you

Singing is recognised as being a positive and life-improving process which builds confidence, raises self-esteem and improves concentration for a healthy mind. It encourages and develops self-expression and improves your confidence as you perform beautifully-arranged songs with a group of like-minded ladies. Without even realising it you

will breathe better, speak more freely and clearly and find a new appreciation for music. As deeper breathing causes oxygen flow to your brain and the production of endorphins in your body you will feel stimulated, healthy and alive! Sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, in Bourne, Peterborough, Stamford or Langtoft and on a Monday afternoon in Market Deeping. Registration begins fifteen minutes prior to the start of the session to ensure we are ready to warmup on time. www.handfulofharmonies.co.uk 01778 345857

John Hayes, Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning visited local new hairdressers to show his support to a new business opening during such a difficult economic climate. The new hair salon, DC10 Hairdressing was formed by business partners Rob Diiorio and Toni Cammarata who also transformed this derelict grade II listed building into an impressive facility which mixes original features with a contemporary feel, offering a hairdressing experience which incorporates a professional service at a very reasonable price. The salon owners have over 40 years combined hairdressing experience and have worked in London, Peterborough and Market Deeping. Through his Simply Thierry identity, Daugeron now offers three distinct propositions - designed to spread his unique approach a little wider than the event market. Simply THIERRY Signature Events, remains the cornerstone of the business, with new and exciting menu’s - including such delights his signature dishes of Foie Gras with salted brioche and Carpaccio of beef with Dijon cream. “Fresh Local produce always prepared with a touch of flair is our passion” explained Daugeron, he added “We are so lucky in Lincolnshire and Rutland to be surrounded by the best natural ingredients and quality producers in the country”. HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY Hi Beauties, Wow March already, is it just me or are the months flying by? As we approach the spring months beauty counters everywhere are launching their new spring make-up collections, from pastel and shimmering eye shadows to bright lips and coral cheeks! Its not always just wardrobes that need cleaning out for spring; so now’s the perfect time to dump that crusty old mascara and buy your new spring look!

Chanel – Spring Make-Up I’ve been eagerly anticipating the new ‘Harmonie De Printemps’ spring make-up range from Chanel and finally it has arrived in stores and online. The new collection for cheeks, lips, eyes and nails uses the radiance of exhilarating colours: rose, coral and peach. There are new lip shades and lip-glosses, eye shadows, a glittery face powder, lip balm and a beautiful multi shade blusher palette. My favourites are the gorgeous limited edition nail polishes cutely named after the spring months April - light raspberry shade, May bright pastel pink and June a creamy soft peach – perfect with a tan. So get yourself down to your nearest Chanel counter before it all sells out. I highly recommend the Chanel counter in Boots – Queensgate, Bethany and Nisha are so friendly and helpful – they know their stuff.

Prices range from £17.50 to £46.

Miss Piggy for MAC If you hadn’t noticed, Miss Piggy is popping up everywhere at the moment - dishing out styling advice, turning up to parties, endorsing products and starring in the new Muppets movie (called The Muppets), in which she plays the editor of Vogue Paris, goes on general release at the end of the week. Now added to her CV is a new range of make-up with worldwide favorites MAC, featuring a delightful piggy pink eye shadow, eyeliner and of course a Miss Piggy must - eyelashes. What’s next? Available online from: www.maccosmetics.co.uk prices from £12.

HYPNOTHERAPY & STAGE HYPNOSIS ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS! Stage hypnosis uses willing participants who ‘want to be seen performing’ the performer will have screened participants in advance of the show using a number of susceptibility tests, he or she does not have any actual power over them other than their desire to perform…..Hypnotherapy on the other hand is a combination of hypnosis and therapy… it’s a tool which facilitates change and discovery of the subconscious reasons for present emotional/physical problems….During hypnotherapy you are in complete control of yourself and are able to accept or reject hypnotic suggestions. I am often asked ‘what is hypnosis?’ contrary to popular opinion hypnosis is not magical nor has it to do with ‘spirits’; hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness that every single person goes into several times a day….it’s the state you experience just before you drift off to sleep, or just before becoming fully alert when you wake up. It is the state when you are on ‘auto pilot’ when driving your car, and the state when you are ‘daydreaming’ or ‘miles away’. Hypnosis is just that…. It is a natural state of mind…that we all ‘go into’…. nothing mystical! Medical Hypnotherapy has far reaching consequence…BBC news channel reported that Hull university had conducted a study which showed that ‘ Hypnosis has a ‘very real’ effect effect that can be picked up on brain scans; one psychologist said the study backed the theory that hypnosis “primes” the

brain to be open for suggestion. Hypnosis is increasingly being used to help people lose weight, decrease anxiety and advisers recently recommended its use on the NHS to treat irritable bowel syndrome. The American Journal of Gastroenterology reported a study of 2 control groups for gut related therapy; in the study group 1 who received gut-directed hypnotherapy in psychology private practices 12/sessions 1hr per wk – IBS related symptoms were improved at 3months, also the results seen at 3 months were sustained up to 1 year. Clinical medical hypnotherapists have come a long way from the days of swinging a pocket watch in front on your eyes or saying “look into my eyes”!! Fun to Run... It’s that time of year when you could be starting to think about charity fun runs. That’s the problem ‘you’re thinking about it’ when you should be putting the miles in. I have put together a basic schedule for a 5k (3.1miles) run.

Important things to note are; • You need to get the correct running trainers to suit your gait • Get your GP to give you a quick health check • Have a slow release meal at least 4 hours before

March is an important month for completing work on your herbaceous borders ready for the season ahead. • Cut down any dead stems as low as possible. • Herbaceous plants grow from the centre outwards so every 2-3 years they need lifting and dividing, discarding the older less

Ornamental garden • Prune Hydrangeas back to a pair of healthy buds, and remove a couple of older stems. • Hollow stemmed shrubs like Buddleia and Sambucus can be pruned back hard now. • As bulbs fade a dressing of blood, fish and bone helps them make strong bulbs for next year. • Finish all rose pruning.

Kitchen garden • Sow parsnips once the ground has warmed up to 7ºC. • Keep picking purple sprouting

The best form of staking, if you can get them, are pea sticks (twiggy branches), pushed in and around the plant allowing the stems to grow through them so they give support and disappear from view. • Fork out any compaction in the bed and give the border a liberal 2-3 inch mulch of any well rotted organic matter. • A top dressing of blood, fish and bone will give your plants a good start slowly releasing its fertility over the next few months. Launched in the UK in 2009, the classy MiTo offered a refreshing alternative to its mainstream competitors. This was made possible by trendy good looks, the introduction of a host of new technologies, including Alfa Romeo’s dynamic control system (known as DNA), its award winning MultiAir engine technology, and a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. The latest 1.4 TB MultiAir 135 bhp ‘Distinctive’ (formerly Veloce) version I tested this week has, like all things Italian, bags of style. For me, the MiTo is a little cramped inside, but its looks are so seductive I really didn’t mind nearly

km and a combined fuel consumption of 50.4 mpg. The car has an athletic yet supple ride, with very little roll on corners. Key to this is the MiTo’s suspension layout: MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent layout with torsion beam at the rear. To emphasise the promptness of response, stability and control, even under extreme conditions, the MiTo’s track widths are among the widest in its class. The wheel rims are also broad in relation to the size of the tyres in order to optimise handling performance.

FAMILY SCENE

FAMILY & CRAFT Get the whole family out to exercise and fundraise for Sport Relief on Sunday 25th March Colourful & gorgeous yarn eggs Materials: Thin cotton yarn | Balloons | Craft glue 1. For each egg, cut twenty 3-foot-long strands of cotton yarn and blow up a balloon to a 6- to 8-inch diameter. Mix equal parts of glue and water in a shallow disposable container. 2. Cover your work area. Hold a strand of yarn by one end, dip it into the glue mixture, then wrap it around the balloon. Repeat with the other strands, randomly overlapping them and tucking in loose ends, until the balloon is evenly covered. 3. Suspend the balloon from a clothes hanger and let it dry overnight. (Cover the area below it with newspaper to catch drips.) Once the egg is completely dry, carefully poke a hole in the balloon, then pull it away from the string as it deflates. Hang your finished egg with ribbon or yarn.

Bunting Pattern Early planning for the Diamond Jubilee! Create some gorgeous colourful knitted triangles to create bunting to hang in the street. Cast on 30 sts | Working in garter stitch (knit every row) knit 3 rows | Knit 2 together at each end of next and every following 4th row until 2 sts remain | Knit last 2 sts twice more | Cast off | Darn in ends Use a thicker yarn or colourful ribbons to hang your bunting from.

Books on the big screen with Naomi - this month’s inspiration comes from TV & Film WAR HORSE

Michael Morpurgo Egmont Books £6.99

From master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo comes an incredibly moving story about one horse’s experience in the deadly chaos of the First World War.

In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of

the trenches, Joey’s courage touches the soldiers around him. A recent adaption for film (rated 12A), Steven Spielberg makes this a story not to miss.
