JACKSON WINS NATIONAL POOL CHAMPIONSHIP 14 year old Jackson Andrews of Market Deeping is celebrating being a national pool champion. Jackson, who attends the Deepings
Courtesy of Don Lambert
School, was representing the Deepings Youth Centre when he won the CYP (Clubs for Young People) U14 title at Stephen Hendry’s Snooker Club in Preston. Having already beaten the champions from Wales, Sussex and Lancashire, he reserved his best for the final with a superb 3-0 victory. To qualify for Preston, Jackson had first to make it through a countywide Lincolnshire tournament (actually winning the Lincolnshire U16 title) and then regional finals in Northampton. The quality of his performances throughout the various events, particularly when under pressure, won many plaudits from the organizers. Jackson is a regular in the fast-improving Lincolnshire U18 junior team and this season has a record of 11 wins from 12, including a victory over a current England player. If he can maintain his form through the rest of the year he will achieve his short term aim of an England trial in January. If you are a budding pool champion, or just fancy potting some balls, why not pop down to the Deepings Youth Centre where Paul Hanson and his team would be delighted to welcome you. ROTARY FUN Cold winter winds, and the resulting lower numbers attending the Rotary Club of Stamford St Martin’s ‘It’s a Knockout’ in May, could not stop the fun that was had by all, competitors and spectators alike. The competition was so intense that two teams finished with the same points so had to take part in a tie breaker. Once again the event provided great fun, was a great team bonding exercise and raised over £2,000 for St. Martin’s Rotary Club Charities. President elect Spencer Wrench, who chaired the organising committee, praised the club members for the hard work and commitment that they had shown to make the event so successful. ‘Fun with a Purpose’ certainly is the driving force of the club. Anyone interested in joining the Rotary Club of Stamford St Martins can get more details by visiting the club website www.rcssm.org or email the club President Steve Fraser;stamfordfrasers@hotmail.co.uk

This months food review took the Scene team to the Bull & Swan in Stamford. The term ‘great food served well’ is sometimes over used, but in this instance, it fits the bill perfectly.
For your chance to WIN a meal for 4 and a bottle of wine... Just complete the form on the right and send it to The Scene, Old School House, Great North Road, Wittering. PE8 6BX or email your details to info@scenepublishing.co.uk. Close date: 31st July.
Ben, Phil the chef and team produced deliciously tasting dishes that were presented superbly. The photographs of the food shown above speaks a thousand words – yes another cliché! The menu was extensive without being overwhelming and the choice of beers, ales and wines would suit any connoisseur. We went for lunch and the sun was shining, though not enough for us to enjoy the lovely gardens at the Bull &

Swan, however, the characteristic interior, was very cozy. We had a selection of mains and desserts, and as usual, shared each dish, so that we could sample the different flavours, though we had to order enough portions of their amazing twice cooked chips, to feed us all, as there isn’t much sharing in that department. All four of our plates were licked clean – the Caesar salad, the fish slate (you can order a slate for 2) and the Caramelised Onion & Goats Cheese Tart was perfect in size and taste, therefore, ensuring we left room for dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Fondant (Charlotte’s absolute favourite), Sticky Toffee Pudding (my absolute favourite), Crème Brûlée (Naomi’s absolute favourite) and the Apple and Blackberry cumble. All of which went down a treat. All we can say is that, if you are looking for somewhere that pays attention to detail and serves REALLY good food, then you won’t go far wrong at the Bull & Swan. Let your hair shine through Annie B Hairdressing has been based in Deeping Fast Tan on Bridge Street, Market Deeping, since February. Annie has over 12 years experience and is registered with the National Hairdressing Council offering peace of mind to her clients with her expertise, skills and professionalism. I arranged an appointment with her for what is known as the ‘Annie Experience’! I firstly had a consultation with Annie where we discussed my skin and hair tones and also planned my new style, taking into consideration hair type , face shape and lifestyle, resulting in a tailor made make-over. Prior to my visit to the salon my hair was all one length and feeling lifeless, Annie recommended a more “shattered, choppy look” bringing my hair bang up to date and very on trend. She also gave advice on how to manage my new
look and even gave me a sample to take home! Annie is in particular an expert in restyling and colouring and her passion for this shines through. Throughout the process she is enthusiastic and makes you feel relaxed. She also takes her time with your appointment, so clients don’t feel rushed. Annie ensures she gives all of her customers the best value for money, with a cut and blow dry costing just £19.50! The whole experience was fabulous and I left feeling ‘Totally Annie’d’ as her existing clients say! Kim x

Scene team get a makeover Sue Garford spent last year having cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy following a diagnosis of non-hodgkins lymphoma in March 2011. Her only symptom was a lump in her groin which she fortunately got checked out by her doctor. As a fit,non-smoker the cancer news came as a bolt out of the blue. However with support from the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre in Peterborough and her family and friends, Sue battled through using her irrepressible spirit and sense of humour to see her through the dark days. Her treatment involved the loss of her hair which was devastating but she bought a fantastic wig and fortunately

Sue believes it’s so important for a woman going through treatment for cancer to feel good about her appearance but knows from personal experience that being bald and feeling grotty does not help self confidence. She has returned to her running, and will this year enter the Great Eastern run in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall in October. By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com
The worlds sporting elite descends on our fair shores this month, most countries and certainly every one of the worlds continent s will be represented. This has made me think about how countries of the world have influenced our gardens over the centuries, by providing us with the myriad of hardy plants we can use in our own borders. From the top two medals winning countries of China and the USA we have been blessed with some great garden favourites. For spring China gives us Magnolias, Camelias and Paeonies. The USA in particular North America gives us prairie plants• New England asters • Rudbeckias (cone flowers) • Solidago (golden rod) • Helianthus ‘lemon queen’ (sun flower) Mixed in with grasses you can create a wonderfully natural meadow feel. For bold colour look to South Africa for Agapanthus, Kniphofias (Red hot pokers) and Osteospurnums.

Lastly to add a splash of tropical lushness we can start with China for garden worthy bamboos like Phyllostachys aurea and the reliably riterum ax Papy n a p a tr hardy palm Trachycarpus fortunei. Te From Japan we have Macleaya cordata ‘Kelways coral plume’ with its delightful flowers and foliage, and for a sheltered spot Taiwan gives us Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ with its huge tropical looking leaves. Hundreds of athletes will be striving to win one of the elusive Olympic medals, so to celebrate this wonderful event why not add your own dash of gold, silver and bronze.

FREE ‘GOOD EGG GUIDE’ FOR CONCERNED PARENTS OF NEW DRIVERS Parents of young people who are learning to drive in Peterborough are being given a free copy of a new national guide that sets out safety messages to help prevent their children from being involved in a road accident. Research undertaken by Good Egg Safety has revealed that 78 per cent of UK parents fear their son or daughter will be involved in a car crash. The ‘Good Egg Guide for Parents of New Drivers’ underlines the causes and consequences of collisions, information to help young people pass their driving test and tips on buying their first car, including securing motor insurance. The survey also detailed that one in three mums and dads think their children drive too fast, while 10 per cent of parents worry their offspring will be tempted to send or check text messages behind the wheel. One in 10 parents are also concerned their child will drink or take drugs when driving.

I love John O’Farrell – he’s brilliantly funny, his characters are so perfectly observed but his stories are always so moving too. His novel, The Best A Man Can Get is one of my all time faves. The Man Who Forgot

Researching this book was eye-opening and fun – I was able to snoop around some incredible country mansions and of course I kept my ear to the ground and my eyes peeled to glean the gossip and shenanigans of village life.

But his soon-to-be ex wife has very clear memories of their 15 years of marriage and she has no desire to relive them. Vaughan will do anything to turn back the clock.
