I manage to turn my face inside out, it goes all screwed up like a dog chewing a wasp.... but when you are surrounded by people and shopping trolleys, all parked in the most inconvenient places, blocking the aisles, and normally right in front of just can’t help but come right out and ask if they are having a nice time..... I mean, WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT? Most supermarkets even have a cafe for just that reason. Go have your little natter in there with a nice cuppa and clear the way for people

Summer is here and it’s a busy time for our native reptiles and amphibians. Tadpoles are developing into froglets and toadlets, and will soon start to emerge from ponds to forage for slugs and insects. Our snakes are hatching their young and hunting for food, whilst our lizards are spending most of their days basking in the sunshine.

Now that we are getting into the hotter months of the year, we will be spending more and more time outside. Please always ensure you wear a high factor sun cream, and protect yourself and your loved ones all day, every day. If you do catch a little too much sun, a great way to relieve the discomfort is Natural Yogurt and Aloe Vera. Just mix some Aloe Vera sap into a pot of yogurt and apply liberally to the affected area. You will feel the cooling effects immediately. Leave on for as long as you can and wash off thoroughly.

TOP HOLIDAY BEAUTY ESSENTIALS Well Beauties, I don’t know about you, but I’m particularly keen to get on that plane, put on my bikini and lie on a sun lounger in the scorching sun with a cocktail permanently attached to my hand, so for those of you going abroad this summer, I’ve put together my top holiday beauty essentials to keep you protected, glowing and beach hair ready whilst abroad.

Tangle Teezer This funky looking brush helps detangle without tearing and torturing your hair, delivering smooth and shiny hair in an instant. Especially good for beach hair if you love going in the sea and pool. RRP £10.20 Available from ASOS and Boots.

Bronzing So what happens if the sun decides not to show up whilst your away? My advice is to be prepared, get down to The Body Shop to see the just launched Honey Bronze Make-up range, all products are made with Community Fair Trade Honey. The honey collection includes; Shimmering Dry Body Oil £16, Bronzing Face Gel £11, Bronzing Powder £13, Bronze Lip Nectar £9.50, Bronze Brush Powder £16. My favourite is the Body Oil it’s non-greasy and gives a tan-enhancing shimmer and can make even pale skin look sunkissed.

Beauty by Miss P

I went along to see Linda Plumb (Beauty by Miss P) for a luxury 1 hour pedicure. The treatment started with a relaxing foot soak, followed by heel and sole exfoliation which removed the dead skin cells and smoothed the skin. In the third stage an intensive foot mask is applied and my feet were wrapped in cling film. Once the mask was removed it was time for my file & polish, I chose a lovely coral OPI nail polish to finish the look.

Summer Scents My favourite summer scent out at the moment is the limited summer edition eau de toilette from Viktor & Rolf ‘Flowerbomb Summer’. It’s sweet and fresh and perfect for those summer evenings. RRP £51 for 50ml.

Linda also offers a home service (depending on location) and offers manicures, pedicures, Xen Spray Tan (as used by Pippa Middleton for the Royal wedding) and waxing. I found Linda to be a friendly beautician who makes the treatment even more enjoyable with her chatty personality; I would definitely go back again.

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

Components of Fitness There are five components of physical fitness, which we will cover individually over the forthcoming issues, building up a program of exercise for you to try. We will start with the Cardio-vascular (heart/lungs) you may know it as cardio, stamina, or aerobic. Basically in layman’s terms it’s “how efficiently we can transport and utilize oxygen around the body”. The two common dominators here are the heart and lungs (the heart being a muscle).

When do you use this muscle (heart)?

heart muscle, decreased blood pressure, and decreased risk of coronary heart decease to name a few.

• Walking to the shops • Playing with the children •Dancing

If you are new to fitness, previously sedentary or post op, please

• Walking up the stairs • Completing household chores

consult with your GP prior to taking up any exercise.

• Playing your chosen sport or using aerobic machines in the gym. Find yourself out of breath when doing any of these activities?

That’s because your heart is outside its comfort zone, so let’s train this muscle to be more efficient.

Try this little challenge next time you are aerobic exercises

Use a marker like a tree or lamppost and pick up the pace for between 10-30 seconds then rest for couple of minutes (not stop reduce the pace). Repeat this sequence 5-10 times. 3. If you are gym goers, then use the Treadmill, Bike, X-trainer or Rowing machine and alternate your pace or resistance on a time basis. 4. Not forgetting those stairs in the house, walk up & down normally for a couple of minutes, then complete 30 seconds of 2 steps at a time, repeat for 15 mins. 5. Always ensure that you finish any of these intervals with 5 minutes at your normal pace and stretch accordingly. Try and do this at least 3 times a week and remember to have a drink at hand. time, leaving its mark on the Olympic Movement with an innovative approach. 1908 London stood in as Host City for Rome following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. New in 1908: • The Olympic Stadium (White City) was built especially for the Olympic Games. • Athletes paraded under their national flags at a ceremony at the start of the Games. • The Marathon was fixed at 42.195km (26.2 miles) – the distance from Windsor Castle to the Royal Box in the Olympic Stadium. This became the official Marathon distance from the 1924 Games onwards. 1948 London again stepped in at the last minute to host the first Games after World War II. New in 1948: • The Games were shown on home television. • Starting blocks were deployed for sprint races. • A volunteer programme was created to help run the Games.

24

In 1948, Dr Ludwig Guttmann organised a wheelchair archery competition at Stoke Mandeville hospital for World War II soldiers with spinal cord injuries The competition took place between sports clubs and other hospitals on the same day as the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games. Four years later, as more sports were added, athletes from Holland joined in and the international Paralympic Movement was born. At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, events for athletes with disabilities ran alongside the other competitions at the main venues.

The Olympic Torch The Olympic Torch comes to the City on Tuesday 3 July 2012. Visiting Leicester and then arriving in Peterborough, the torch will continue its journey and go on to Norwich.

TV this month

Chloë Grace Moretz

90210 and Britain’s Got Talent may have ended, but really, there’s no need to panic -One Tree Hill is back for its eighth season and Keeping up with the Kardashians for its sixth. Okay, I’ll admit it, I am slightly obsessed with American TV, but if it’s not quite your cup of tea then there’s still Britain’s Next Top Model and the brand new series of Top Gear to look forward to. Torchwood: Miracle Day is also set to start this month, so we most definitely won’t be bored!

Chloë Grace Moretz is an actress best known for her role in the 2010 film Kick-Ass. At just 14 years old, she has already appeared in over 20 films including Big Momma’s House 2 and (500) Days of Summer. She has already won many awards for her performances, including an MTV movie award for both the ‘Best Breakout Star’ and the ‘Biggest Badass Star’ for her break out role in Kick-Ass. She is currently filming Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows alongside Johnny Depp, and is set to continue taking both the world of acting, and of fashion, by storm.

JOBNT HU Let the job hunt begin…

Now that exams are over for the majority of us and summer is almost here, getting a part time job may seem like the perfect idea. We all know that it’s easier said than done though – thousands of other people are looking for jobs too. My advice? If you’re looking for a long term job rather than just a summer job, apply in mid August when current employees will be getting ready to leave for university. It is almost guaranteed that companies will be recruiting around this time to replace those leaving. If you’re simply looking for a summer job though, I’d say don’t be too fussy! A job is a job, and if you’re desperate for the money then you can’t pick and choose. Send your CV off to every company you can think of and ask friends to look out for any vacancies. Remember, there is a lot of competition so don’t be disheartened if you are turned away – just keep on searching!

S

elling your home is one of the most

stressful things you will

do. Opening your private space to opinionated strangers is not an easy task, no matter how good your interior skills. In order to avoid months of relentless visits and disappointments, here are a few tips that will soon have your home in tip-top condition.

Top tips from

Set the table

De-personalise your space When it comes to the inside of your property, you can’t be sentimental about the things you surround yourself with. They may have great meaning to you, but they will mean absolutely nothing to a potential buyer, so pack away those family photographs and heirlooms as they will only serve to distract the buyer. Same rules apply to any trophies or any unusual personal collections you may have i.e. pig ornaments.

De-clutter We all collect an amazing amount of objects over the years. Now is the perfect time to clear them out. Car boot them, give them to a charity shop or wrap them up and put them somewhere safe. Be harsh – no keeping things ‘just-in-case. Do the same with

Replace worn carpet with neutral colours which prospective buyers will find non-offensive,

children toys, old clothes and overflowing book shelves.

if it is only part worn, look at buying a colourful rug – remember, you can take this with you to your new home.

Check your house for those little niggling jobs that you’ve been ignoring for months.

New underlay will always add to the under-foot comfort, giving buyers a ‘feel good’ factor. If you have moved furniture and there is an indent in the carpet, rub an ice cube gently over the area and it should fluff up again.

Fix The less imperfections a viewer sees the better.

Clean Everywhere! Sweep all walls and corners with a feather duster. Clean the windows inside and out, clean the curtains/blinds. Ensure internal and external doors are cleaned and dust free. If you have pets, wash their bedding to help keep pet smells at bay and try to keep pet hair to a minimum.

Each

project shows the equipment needed, with step-by-step photography and clear instructions guiding children through the process of making their own piece of art. My Art Book is out now priced at £9.99. Thanks to Dorling Kinsley we have a copy to give away to one lucky reader. Email naomi@scenepublishing.co.uk with your name, age and address by the 25 July 2011.

During the summer holidays the site is open 10am - 5pm seven days a week. Admission is £5 for adults, £4.50 for Seniors, £3.75 for children or students and £13.75 for families. Summer family pass £25.

Summer Craft Pressing Flowers You can press flowers with a special flower press or just using blotting paper and heavy books. You should only pick flowers from your garden. It is against the Countryside Code to remove plants from the countryside and wild flowers should always be left for the enjoyment of everyone. When selecting flowers to press always choose those that are looking at their best. 1. Removing moisture is the key, so begin by collecting flowers when they are dry 2. Lay the flowers flat between two pieces of blotting paper 3. Place the paper between two pieces of cardboard 4. Place the two pieces of paper between two pieces of cardboard 5. Place the layers into a flower press as follows, cardboard, paper, flowers, paper & cardboard 6. Tighten the wing nuts and leave to dry for a few days Alternatively place the flowers between sheets of blotting or flower preserving paper and place inside a large book such as the phone book and leave for a few days. Be careful to use enough plain paper sheets to protect books from staining.

One of the biggest things that need sorting is the future of homesick Carlos Tevez, as his stay or departure will obviously affect potential targets. At the moment they seem favourites to sign Man United target Alexis Sanchez as well as Argetine forward Javier Pastore. One thing is certain; they won’t be resting on their laurels despite spending hundreds of millions in recent times and finally winning their first trophy, (The FA Cup) in 35 years.
